1. Google Music: Google turned heads with their release of Google Music for Android phones in 2010. The app itself hasn’t changed much since the beta release, and it’s not the most aesthetically appealing app out this; however, it’s the ability to upload up to 20,000 songs—with a maximum of 250MB per song—and the free music that makes users stick with this service. The music app is the same as the default Android app, and users can choose to download specific songs to their phone for offline play. Additional music can be purchased from the Google Play music store.
2. Amazon MP3 is similar to Google Play Music. With a sleeker interface and access to the entire Amazon MP3 store, this is a great solution for any user who frequently purchases music and doesn’t just want to upload music but to purchase more as well, and the app plays both music in the cloud and on the device. Amazon MP3 can detect missing artwork from properly tagged songs and works well with Windows Media Player and iTunes media libraries to boot. The major downfall is the 5-gigabyte limit. However, music lovers can purchase additional storage for a fee.
3. Pandora: What music list would be complete without Pandora? Android, Apple and BlackBerry users alike can enjoy listening to stations based off their favorite genres, artists and songs with this streaming app. Music lovers can rate music up or down, and the latter prevents songs from playing again. The free version includes ads and limits skipping to six songs per hour. However, users can upgrade to a yearly subscription to remove these limitations. Because it relies on an active connection, Blackberry users must connect to WiFi to listen during BlackBerry outages.
4. Shazam is a different sort of music app altogether. Rather than allowing users to discover or listen to music, it listens to music through the mobile phone’s microphone and puts a name to the song. It’s a great way to identify music on TV or in movies, playing in retail stores or on the radio. In fact, some commercials with background music now feature the Shazam icon in the corner.
5. TuneIn Radio: Last but not least, TuneIn Radio offers a way for listeners to enjoy local radio stations from around the globe, even if their mobile devices do not include an FM radio. With TuneIn, users can search for specific stations that stream on the app or find new stations based genres. Sports and news stations are also available. TuneIn saves favorite stations so users can access them more quickly in the future.

Hello Knowliz readers,

It shouldn’t come as a surprise because as you know I have been asking about a new name for Knowliz for quite some time. You guys actually provided some really good suggestions. However I decided on “Techacker” that mostly consolidates what I cover on this blog.

So let me take this opportunity to introduce you to my new technology oriented blog and the future of Knowliz –Techacker.

With Techacker you can expect the same kind of coverage as Knowliz. It will continue the same trend as Knowliz and will be far better and organized. Techacker will continue to provide you tips and tricks on various apps and software, how-to articles on various web services and products, iPhone and Android app reviews and much more.

I am also planning to created a podcast (audio and video) to go along with it. So if you are into podcast, you would be happy to know that a podcast oriented feed is already planned and will be rolled out subsequently.

Why not I stop writing here and request you to visit Techacker? I am open to all sorts of feedback and suggestions to improve the layout, theme, content and topics I cover on Techacker.

I was browsing through various document sharing sites and stumbled upon Issuu – a site dedicated to publications.  This is where I found the latest Inc India issue.  You can read this issue here, print it, share it further or download it – whatever is your preference.  Most importantly, the online experience is just awesome.  I loved reading it and thought of sharing with you guys, in case you are also interested in reading Inc. magazine.

I have always been a great fan of Inc. Well, this is my very first attempt on Audio Podcasting?  So be easy on me.  I know there are many flaws that I need to improve on.  I will try to overcome those mistakes in the future podcast clips.  But I would really appreciate your feedback on the content, tone and other aspects of it.  So that I can improve those and make sure I provide you what you are most interested to hear.

As a matter of fact, I am planning to record such small clips on small issues like these.  And if things are successful, I will plan on launching it as a Podcast channel on various avenues like iTunes, Soundcloud and all.

In this high-tech world we all end up accumulating lots of electronic stuff – be it cell phones, CD-DVD players, mp3 players, iPod and all.  And when the new models come out we can’t resist buying them, converting previous models into junk.  Overtime these old electronics keep piling up and become so old that you can’t even sell them on eBay.

So instead of accumulating electronic junk in your drawers and closets, why not make some money by either selling or recycling them on these services.  These services will let you search for your specific model, specify condition and then give you a quote online.  If you agree, then you can send it to them for free and in return they will give you money as cash, Amazon Gift card or transfer that to your PayPal account.

Obviously if the gadget is in working condition, you get more money.  If it is water damaged, you won’t get any money but at least they will help you recycle free of cost.  Whatever the case may be, it never hurts to check how much your old electronics is worth.  So check out these 6 online services if you want to sell or recycle your old gadgets:

Gazelle:  Gazelle is a service that helps you sell or recycle old electronics like cell phones, laptop and over 250,000 other electronics products.  To use the site, search for the product you want to sell, answer some questions about the product, review offers and ship the item.  Once they receive your item, the money will be on its way to you.  Depending on the condition of the product, Gazelle will either sell it to retailers or just recycle.
2. NextWorth:  Similar to Gazelle, NextWorth also lets you sell your old cell phones, game consoles, iPad and other gadgets.  
3. SellCell : SellCell differs from the above two services in the sense that it actually provides you best rates you might get for your old cell phones by searching the web for you.  It actually consolidates results in a page and provides you option to various venues you may sell your phones.  Also, it works only for cell phones.
4. CellitUsed : Another similar service is CellitUsed which was founded in 2005 with a similar mission.  Check it out.
5. SimplySellular : Another cell phone recycle and selling service is SimplySellular.  Once you find your phone model and other details, provide them with the detail and they will send you an envelope to send the device.  After receiving your device, they will send your money within 14 days.
6. BuyMyTronics : Yet another service to sell your old Electronics and cell phones with a similar concept.

Though there are numerous services that let you sell your old junk, you mileage may vary as to how much you get for those gadgets.  So it is always better to try at various services and see where you are getting the best deal.  And all these come into picture only when you have not been able to sell them on eBay successfully.  Else that would be the first place I would try.

There are some city specific apps too available in Android Market, but these 5 apps actually cover it all.  It obviously doesn’t hurt to try them all and keep the one that works out for you the most.  I personally have found that the information is mostly up to date on Zillow and it has worked out better for me.

So you finally bought an Android phone after loving iPhone for a long time.  Or may be this the first time you ever bought a smartphone.  Whatever the case may be, but first question you would have in mind is to know what apps to install.

Hint:  Most apps (if not all) you used to use on iPhone are available for Android too.  So that’s a very good start.

Now beyond that based on my experience and regular use of Android device for over 3 years, I have come to love some apps on Android.  I feel my android phone is incomplete without these apps.  I want to recommend these MUST HAVE apps with you and give you a jump-start in the new Android world.

Without further ado, below is a list of 25 Android apps that you should install right after buying any Android phone:

1. Social Networking

When it comes to Social networking everyone has their preference.  But I am sure most people use Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Google+.  So start by installing these three apps in Social networking category:

1. Facebook for Android (Market Link)
2. Twitter for Android (Market Link)
3. Linkedin (Market Link)
4. Google+ (Market Link)

Some people like to use All-in-one kind of apps like Tweetdeck, Hootsuite and Seesmic etc.  But I personally prefer the native apps.

2. Music

Search in Music category in Android Market, you will find thousands of apps.  But it comes down to a very limited high quality apps that I would recommend you to install on your new device:

DoubleTwist (possibly with Airsync) (Market Link) :  DoubleTwist is a feature rich Music player for Android.  DoubleTwist comes with a matching Desktop software that allows you to sync media with your computer like you used to do with iTunes.  Also if you spend $4.99 (which I think you should) for AirSync it adds features like wireless syncing with PC.  Airsync also enable Airplay like feature on your Android phone and allows you to stream media to Xbox, PS3 and other DLNA enabled devices.
6. Google Music (Market Link) : Google Music allows you to stream your music from anywhere.  Google provides online space for over 20,000 songs.  Upload your entire music library in the cloud and enjoy your own music anywhere and everywhere with your Android phone.
7. iHeartRadio (Market Link) : This apps allows you to listen to local FM radio channels and you can also start listening for a particular artist.
8. Pandora (Market Link)
9. Soundhound (Market Link) : Never ever waste time to recognize random songs, find out the song information quickly with this app.

Other notable apps you may want to try are Spotify, ExFM, Amazon mp3, Tunein and Slacker Radio etc.

3. eReading

No, I am not just talking about eReaders but also everything that lets you consume online content on your phone such as news, blogs and obviously books & magazines etc.

10. Feedly (Market Link) : A must have app for all RSS readers.  Very beautiful interface, swipe left/right to read articles.  Check it out, I am sure you will love it.
11. News360 (Market Link) : The only single app you will ever install on your Android phone because it consolidate news from various channels so that you don’t read any news twice.
12. Google Currents (Market Link)
13. Amazon Kindle (Market Link)
14. The Washington Post (Market Link)

You may also like to install any specific news channel you subscribe to such as The New York Times, CNN, Fox News and USA Today etc.  They all seem to do deliver a consistent news experience.

4. Games

Well, this is a very personal section to write about.  It will be very biased and individualistic to say what apps are good.  So, install whatever games you like.  But just to give you a quick start on games try:

Also, your phone should have come with some pre-installed games.

In an effort to promote Knowliz to have more of a Technology related name which clearly conveys the meaning, I am planning to rebrand it.
But I myself can’t come up with a suitable name for it which if not already taken. So today I need your help again.

Knock knock….I mean Twit Twit….!!!

I am sure by now you have at least an account on Twitter.  You may not have started to use it yet.  But believe it or not, it is a great tool for communication and many other things.

Every day on Twitter I share links to interesting stories around the world through various mediums like News sites and various other apps on my Android phone.  Also when I post something here on Knowliz, that gets automatically tweeted to let you know that I published something new.
