I am excited to announce that I will be offering free scholarships to people interested in stroking their inner artistic child.  Application Deadline is December 15th.   In order to apply, please send a brief paragraph about why you want to become a better photographer and artist and attach no more than 3-5 images in .jpg format.  You must be at least 12 years old.  Email to laurieknowltonart@gmail.com.  I’ll be notifying the winners on a rolling basis.  You must be willing to commit to a free 4 months.  A 50% discount will be offered to continuing students after that.  You can apply for either location based private lessons (on Culebra Island December – January) and Maine February – November.

Mentoring Services

How would you like to work with an experienced photographer and artist? Someone with whom you will feel comfortable sharing your thoughts, your work, and your dreams as an artist? Laurie Knowlton is now accepting a limited amount of new students for mentoring as well as offering workshops and critiquing.  Laurie specializes in iPhone Photography, “Point and Shoot” Cameras, as well as DSLRs and “specialized” camera processes such as Infared and Long Exposure shooting.  Her services are perfect for anyone, regardless of age, skill level or residence.

Workshops are offered primarily on the Coast of Maine  and Isla de Culebra, Puerto Rico and online mentoring from anywhere in the world!

How Does It Work?

Mentoring in Groups

-Sign up with Laurie on a monthly, quarterly, or yearly basis for her exclusive private mentoring service online.

-Post up to 10 photos weekly. Laurie will critique each image, offering both positive feedback and suggestions for improvement.

-Laurie will choose 3 images from the student group to edit herself, with a step-by-step explanation of her process for student’s benefit. (This will primarily be done in Adobe Lightroom, but can also be performed in iPhoto or Photoshop Elements at student’s request.)  iPhone photographs will be edited in various apps including ProHDR, PhotoForge2, and Snapseed.

Monthly Shows

-Laurie will announce dates for a monthly virtual show. Students and mentees may enter free of charge.

-In order to encourage developing artists, Laura will offer the winners of these shows a complementary free month, quarter, or year of mentoring services – along with a workshop prize here and there!

Private Lessons

Individualized Mentoring

-Mentoring via email, Skype, or social media is also available. The perks of this service include Laurie’s extensive gentle critiquing and editing services, with up to 100 images per month.

I like my images to tell a story – your story.  A story that captures the essence of who you are.  The twinkle in your eye.  Your laugh lines.  Your Emotions.  Your inner heart and soul.  What makes you tick?  When I do portrait work, I become a photo journalist, researching the story, exploring all the angles and making it a tangible, touchable keepsake for you and your loved ones to enjoy for a lifetime.

My portraits sessions are only held when and where the natural lighting will work in our favor (and yes, that is limited this time of the year!).  I don’t use any studio equipment or lights, and much prefer to do your sessions in the outdoors if possible.  I enjoy using environments that are familiar to you so you are relaxed and free.  I want to watch you interact with your surroundings and capture you as you grow less aware of my camera.  You may choose your own location or I have some favorites that will fit every mood you are trying to capture.

I have limited spaces available for portrait work such as pets, families, intimate moments, casual weddings and ceremonies, and even bittersweet ends.  I prefer not to do big events because I don’t feel that I can become intimate enough with my subjects to be able to capture the special moments, the twinkles, the smiles and the tears.

Here is my process:

I recommend two hour shoots which allow me to get to know you better, which will make for truer, more intimate images. I also find that clients relax more in front of the camera if the process is not rushed.  You will also have the opportunity to change outfits, have your picture taken some with your family pets, do the salsa, yoga….whatever will make these images fun and express the real you.

Generally, you can plan on receiving at least 100 images to look at and choose from.

•  Within a week of the shoot, I will develop the images and place them in a completely private password-protected gallery which will be online for a week while you decide which images you wish.
• You decide if you want color, black and white, sepia or a combo.
•  For extra fees, I offer services such as retouching and smoothing out facial lines or skin blemishes or taking your favorite music and making a professional slideshow.
•  You can purchase all the images on a CD to be used whenever and however you wish
• You can choose just a few of the images for a CD
• You can order prints, canvas wraps, cards, photo books, calendars and much more through me.  All of our prints are printed at the top national lab under our direction.  (see most commonly used prices below)

$100 for the first hour, $25 each 1/2 hour or part thereof

Non-refundable deposit of $50 to book session (may be used for future credit).

I just got my new IR converted camera back, and these are the out of the box attempts…..clearly going back to the days of film and taking more time composing each shot for tonal ranges, but wonderful fun!  Stay tuned as i practice…both in the field and in the digital darkroom!
