Republished with permission

In last week’s column, I pointed out that the GLBT movement might be the first where a majority gets to vote on the rights of a minority. If the basic freedoms of women, immigrants and African Americans were subject to the whims of voters, there is no doubt that this nation would be decades behind. Yet, we continue to blindly accept that these degrading and un-American referendums are tolerable, when they are not.

Ironically, ballot initiatives were once helpful in gaining visibility. The 1977 anti-gay vote in Miami, led by beauty queen Anita Bryant, put our issues on the national radar. Even though we lost, we were given a rare forum to introduce ourselves to the American people.

In 1978, California voters defeated the Briggs Initiative, which would have banned gay schoolteachers, showing that victory was attainable. But whether it is a loss in Miami and a win in California in 1977-78, or a defeat in Maine and the victory on domestic partnerships in Washington State last week, success or failure is beside the point. All Americans are losers by virtue of participating in a disgraceful process that is an affront to human dignity.

Unfortunately, we have never had the luxury to stop, take a deep breath and consider if these grotesque referendums are the best use of our time and limited resources. With a record of 0-31 in marriage initiatives, now may be a good opportunity to review our complicity in a process that doles out or strips away basic rights by majority vote.

We must first recognize that a virtual campaign-industrial-complex has been built and financed around these fights. There is an army of field staff, media consultants, signature gatherers, advertising experts and fundraisers who work (and in some cases thrive) on these ballot initiatives.

In California, both sides spent as much as $73 million. Even in the small media market of Maine, both sides spent a combined nine million dollars for campaign staff and advertisements. The financial burden for these wars repeatedly falls on the same besieged philanthropists and everyday people who care enough to open their wallets. The four key questions we must ask ourselves before we continue down this road:

1) Are referendums the best use of our human resources?

2) Are they the best use of our finite capital?

3) Are these votes legitimizing the un-American concept of mob rule?

4) Are these quixotic and narrowly focused battles the best way to educate and create lasting progress?

Perhaps, these campaigns are unavoidable and we must soldier on and slog through the muddy terrain of lies and fear-based thirty-second ads. I won’t pretend to know the answer, but there is no doubt that our traditional tactics must be looked at with fresh eyes and vigorously debated.

There has been much disagreement as to whether our ads in these campaigns are too “soft”. I think this misses the larger point that campaigns are not conducive to education. “Vote No on Prop 8” may be a good campaign slogan, but it is hardly a compelling message for changing hearts and minds.

Campaigns by their very nature go for the short term fix, when we may be in need of more enduring strategies. Repeatedly investing in such hand-to-hand combat has potentially precluded deeper discussion with the American people, so they fully understand how our families are harmed, the damage caused by discrimination and the inequality we face, from taxation to immigration law.

It is also clear that our opponents are trying to bleed us to death financially. We can never outspend the combined forces of the Mormon, Catholic and Evangelical churches, which can afford referendums in every burg in the nation. To put the monetary imbalance in perspective, the annual budget for the largest GLBT organization is only $30 million. Meanwhile, in 2007 the Archdiocese of Los Angeles paid a $660 million settlement to 508 victims of sexual abuse by clergy.

Instead of investing millions on referendums, what if we used the money to send our field experts into communities to educate, without asking people to take sides on a divisive measure? What if we built powerful outreach programs geared towards minority communities? How about training talk radio hosts and buying airtime in small, conservative media markets like Lewiston, Maine or Bakersfield, California?

By turning away from such votes, we strengthen our position by increasing our moral authority. At the very least, it forces our foes out of campaign mode and into an ongoing, intelligent discussion, where it is more difficult to twist the truth and manipulate emotions.

Winning in California and Maine would have been exhilarating. But, would you have felt less dirty and exploited by the referendum process in victory?

I didn’t think so.

It is not OK to impose your personal beliefs on any group of fellow humans.

It is not OK to attempt to legislate your religion on larger American society.

It is not OK to select portions of your sacred texts to justify harming others.

It is not OK to use mob rule by ballot initiatives to replace representative democracy.

It is not OK to proclaim yourself as judge of people who are different from you.

It is not OK to deny to and jerk back civil rights from other humans.

The
deeply disappointing finish in the sprint to save and implement
marriage equality in Maine carries an underlying warning. The most
vocal leaders of the anti-LGBT and anti-civil rights forces intend to
remain relentless, cruel and ruthless. Any thought of playing nice with
them is masochistic.

As Left Ahead! co-host Ryan Adams said in our post-election roundup podcast
(about 6 minutes in), it is time for the pro-equality movement to be
more aggressive. Voters who say jerking back legal rights from any
group is not discrimination, not bigotry need to be called out.

We
saw and heard it all in Maine — with spillage into Massachusetts — this
week. In the cowardly euphemistic people's veto, voters overturned
same-sex marriage before the law could take effect. As in half our states,
that is the way initiative, referendum and override procedures can
work. That is still not OK.

I have ranted before at Marry in
Massachusetts about the befuddled form of direct democracy. We should
not be surprised that many of the same folk who have befuddled forms of
Christianity are the strongest advocates for this form of mob rule.
They can't win by logic or compassion or national interest. These
bastardized forms of plebiscite are their shot to win on emotion.

What
we need to keep before us is that these folk are as relentless as they
are cruel. In contrast, those who honestly believe and act on the
underlying principles of virtually all religions are not like that.
Think of the Talmudic early statement of what Christians call the
Golden Rule. That which is hateful to you, do not do to another.

Instead,
the Yes on 1 people, the Massachusetts Family Institute leaders, and
particularly the hateful National Organization for Marriage live the
axiom that those whom they hate and fear are fair game.

If you're feeling timid or unsure about speaking up, consider the emotions, thoughts and words of the uncloseted anti-equality folk:

Matt Barber,
Liberty Counsel and Liberty Alliance Action — Here’s the bad news. The
margin of victory could have been greater. Many behind the ‘Yes on 1’
campaign, rather than simply telling the truth, chose the Neville
Chamberlain approach. They merely circled the wagons around the word
"marriage," even suggesting that "domestic partnerships" ("gay
marriages" by another name) are acceptable. This makes no sense. If
that’s a viable compromise, then why not simply allow 'gay' duos the
word "marriage"? It’s an incongruity that demands an explanation. This
is an historic battle for the minds and souls of our children – for our
very culture. The mealy-mouthed approach must end. This is not just
about "marriage." It has everything to do with forced affirmation of
homosexuality – under penalty of law.

Kris Mineau,
Mass. Family Institute — This is a great victory for the people of
Maine, but once again a bittersweet moment for us here in
Massachusetts. It is appalling that in the so-called 'cradle of
liberty' the people have never been allowed to speak on the definition
of marriage. With marriage vote victories being 31 for 31 states across
the country, there is no doubt why the homosexual special interests
groups spent so much money and time in denying the citizens of
Massachusetts the opportunity to vote on our Marriage Amendment...We
certainly have never given up on finding the opportunity or making the
opportunity available for the citizens of Massachusetts to vote. It’s
by no means decided in Massachusetts.

Bill Donohue, Catholic League — The people have spoken. faithfulness to God's laws pertaining to marriage and the family, and a
return to the Biblical truth about homosexuality. Victory will only be
realized when the public returns to an awareness that homosexuality is
a sin.

partnership laws that provide benefits on the basis of homosexuality,
we must defund
the so-called "civil rights teams" and remove "sexual orientation and
gender identity" from the Maine Human Rights Act and the Maine Civil
Rights Act. It would also be prudent to reinstate Maine's anti-sodomy
law that was quietly removed from our criminal code in the late
1970s.We must not stop fighting until Maine's laws are once again just,
and equal rights are guaranteed to all Maine citizens on the basis of
good conduct, not sinful behavior. For the sake of our children and
grandchildren we must fight this evil. And we will fight. We will never
surrender. There is too much at stake.

Have no doubts. The self-appointed leaders of the anti-equality forces intend to continue to hamper, hinder, hurt and harm.

They
may feign religious ideals of love, but their actions are as far from
Christian teachings as possible. The voters whom they influence are not
yet fully aware that saying the hateful things many times at increasing
volume does not make those messages true. Instead, it means the
speakers are loud, repetitive liars.

Cross-post: This also appears at Marry in Massachusetts.

~Mike

The mood of the crowd seemed somber yet determined, and one thing was different than I've seen before; our differences no longer matter. We need to do what we can together if we are going to win this battle once and for all across our country. If we work in a cooperative effort in the things we agree on we would be stronger than our opposition. We can maintain our own beliefs, structures, and reserve the right to disagree, but we must start working towards our mutual goals together. It seems we have taken a step in that direction and have found the silver lining in Maine's defeat on Question 1.

Allow me to share with everyone some of what we who were there saw tonight and encourage you to think about how you feel about what happened in Maine, and what you want to do about it. If you can't be involved, and I say can't, not I don't feel like, then donate generously to the groups you believe in. I'm talking directly to the 31,512 individuals that visited this site in the last 24 hours who remain in the shadows; what are you waiting for?! What's it going to take before you stand up and be heard?! There is a job for everyone somewhere in the group you want to help, go find it and do your part to help end discrimination once and for all. Be the change friends... be the change.

Today is a sad day for equality in Maine, throughout the country, and around the world. Yesterday Maine voters who were frightened by misinformation went to the polls and voted away marriage equality in their state, saddening GLBT activists and supporters everywhere, but our fight is not over. Those close to Boston can assemble with friends at the Boston Common 6:00PM tonight and hear a host of speakers who are committed to continue the fight for equality. We are Americans, which means we know defeat is temporary and that our determination will in the end win our cause for us. Tonight and in the coming days all of us may want to ask the same question of ourselves; "Did I do my part?"

Our country was founded on the principle that although we are all different we are as equal as our actions afford. When you deny an entire class of people equal rights, such as marriage, it casts that principle aside and shows that fear can govern our minds more than our logic. Once, not so long ago, people were proud to stand up for civil rights on principle alone. Is there anyone left out there that cares enough to stand up and be counted without regard to ridicule or personal cost?

Are you angry enough to start fighting back yet? How much does it take before the GLBT community unites and starts working to end this ugliness once and for all for the benefit of everyone? Put your checkbook away and instead give your time. Find a group near you and join the fight for equality, because next time it could be your rights that's being put up for public vote.

That means that all of us deserve to be judged by our actions and intent, not by who we love. There are many untruths spread against minorities like the GLBT community in an attempt to keep those minorities down, but I find hope that at least in Maine there are people who are above allowing these lies to be sold as the truth. When David Parker went in person to testify in front of the Maine legislative committee hearings this May on same sex marriage he brought with him his version of the events that led to his stand. "Mainers", as they call themselves, brought the book he referred to and read from it the harmlessness of it's message and disarmed his hate with their laughter. I learned that Mainers are far more savvy than I had given them credit for after canvassing with Protect Maine Equality in conjunction with MassEquality and Join the Impact MA last Saturday.

If we are going to win this fight we have to have every voice that cares speaking to everyone they know and visiting all the places where they an reach others. We all need to work together on this and put aside any differences we may have had in the past for the greater good of equality for all. If we can win in Maine it serves as a significant turning point in the struggle for GLBT rights not only in Maine but across the country and around the world. It shows we are able to take our fight first to the courts and win on the basis of what's just according to the letter of the law. It shows that we can influence legislators to stand up for what's right without fear of compromising their office or electability. If we win this vote in Maine it shows we have taken our message directly to the people and that people are starting to listen to what's said and check the facts for themselves, making up their own minds. It shows that fear is no longer enough of a motivator to deny what's fair and right, and it shows that people are no longer afraid to stand up for their neighbors. Courage made America great, and that courage seems in the air again.

If you live anywhere in New England please consider putting your money back in your pocket and donate something infinitely more valuable, your time. If you can't get there in person call Protect Maine Equality and ask them what you can do to help, there is work for everyone no matter what your ability. Every second between now and November 3 when the polls close matters. Your help will make difference whether we win or not because you'll know you can be proud that you at least tried. The value of that experience is difficult to put in words but it has changed my life radically for the better, and everyone I know who volunteered has said the same in different ways.

By John Hosty-Grinnell

Originally I was going to be live blogging from the National Equality March but there were several factors that kept that from happening, so let me now share with you how things went. Join the Impact MA brought over 250 people to Washington DC by bus, which traveled overnight each way, arriving at our destinations in the wee hours of the morning. On the way there we watched movies and talked about everything under the sun, and some were even able to catch a few winks of sleep although the comfort level on a bus leaves much to be desired.

Saturday morning we spent in part waiting for our rooms to be readied and the middle part of the day either consisted of attending various workshops geared to bring people more ability as activists, or as we did, some people broke away in order to enjoy the sites. I had promised Ray my spouse that we would go to the National Art Gallery so he could do research for a class project he has, so I can't tell you much more about the planned events that day. When we got back to out hotel room it was our intention on meeting up with the rest of our group and attending the night time events, but our lack of sleep caught up with us and we ended up staying in. The day of the march is an entirely different story. Early in the morning we received word that the planners of the rally were concerned because they had provided for 100,000 people showing up, but instead there were an estimated 250,000 that joined the march.

I was going to spend my time getting the close ups from the press box near the stage but at last minute chose to stay in the streets in order to get a multitude of personal mini-interviews and pictures of the participants. The amount of information we received will take some time to go through and properly put into cohesive stories, but allow me to share a taste of what's to come:<a

Many LGBT activists are currently in Washington DC attending events all over the city that are geared to teach people how to become better at fighting for their rights. The call was put out in May by Cleve Jones who organized a March through DC that coincides with the 30th anniversary of the first GLBT March back in 1979. Taken from the National Equality March website:

Our One Single Demand:

Equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states. We will accept no less and will work until it is achieved. Equality Across America exists to support grassroots organizing in all 435 Congressional Districts to achieve full equality.

We are guaranteed equal protection under the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. Free and equal people do not bargain for or prioritize our rights. Full equality necessarily includes all members of the LGBT community and encompasses, but is not limited to:

The right to work our jobs and go to school free of harassment and discrimination.

The right to safety in our daily lives, and protection from hate crimes.

The right to equitable healthcare, and the right to donate blood.

The right to equitable immigration policies.

The right to marry.

The right to serve in the military openly.

Many bills currently exist to address some of these issues, but we do not support a piecemeal strategy. We seek one federal solution to full equality.

Our strategy:

Equality Across America is a network of decentralized organizers in every one of the 435 Congressional districts. These organizers form Congressional District Action Teams (CDATs) that will do the work on the ground in their own communities to achieve full equality.

Each CDAT works not only toward national equality, but participates in their local and state struggles for equality in areas like marriage, adoption, and work-place discrimination. Equality Across America connects organizers from around the country so we can support one another in all of our work, focusing energy and resources in battlegrounds when needed.

Our philosophy:

As members of every race, class, faith, and community, we see the struggle for LGBT equality as part of a larger movement for peace and social justice.

There is a group of bloggers that are working together to help bring readers live coverage of the events. Some of those blogs include Jaysays.com, and if you "tweet" you can follow a flurry of posts by searching for #NEM, and those real time comments are coming in literally every second. Here is a psuedo-complete list of the blog sites from Jay, chairman of the effort:

This story was something a guru once told me and I was happy to find it on the internet in a blog writing below...

An adult elephant can easily uproot huge trees with its trunk; it can knock down a house without much trouble. When an elephant living in captivity is still a baby, it is tied to a tree with a strong rope or a chain every night. Because it is the nature of elephants to roam free, the baby elephant instinctively tries with all its might to break the rope. But it isn’t yet strong enough to do so.

Realizing its efforts are of no use, it finally gives up and stops struggling. After the baby elephant tries and fails many times, it will never try again for the rest of its life.

Later, when the elephant is fully grown, it can be tied to a small tree with a thin rope. It could then easily free itself by uprooting the tree or breaking the rope. But because its mind has been conditioned by its prior experiences, it doesn’t make the slightest attempt to break free. The powerfully gigantic elephant has limited its present abilities based on the limitations of the past- Baby Elephant Syndrome.

Human beings are exactly like the elephant except for one thing-we can choose not to accept the false boundaries and limitations of our past.

Think about this LGBT...

We're going on a road trip folks! No, not the extensive one Chris Mason made in his travels over the summer with his latest venture, drivingequality.com, but rather to the National Equality March in Washington DC this weekend. John Hosty-Grinnell will be accompanying Join the Impact MA along with the hundreds of people they've gathered who are leaving tonight by bus and arriving first thing in the morning. There will be a slew of reporters all attempting to live blog the events, so look for "IQreport" as a means of discerning who is working in this organized effort.

John will be reporting directly to this blog as well as on Twitter under the screen name "salemmaman" if you'd like to subscribe to the live blurbs as they come. The two big things that we will be covering is the main event (the march itself) as well as giving impromptu interviews that ask the question "Why have you come to the march?" For details on the march and activities planned refer to the website http://equalityacrossamerica.org/
