Everyone has an opinion and Oklahomans recently got to make it official in a vote for Oklahoma’s Favorite Girl Scout Cookie. State Treasurer Ken Miller, at a press conference at the state capitol today, announced that Thin Mints was voted the undisputed winner in the competition with 32.7 percent of the vote. Samoas was a close second with 30.5 percent. Rounding out the top three cookies was the Tagalongs – a distant third with 13.6 percent of votes.

Treasurer Miller also awarded Katie Francis from Oklahoma City a $1,529 Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan (OCSP) account. Francis, 10 years old, set an Oklahoma Girl Scout record with selling a total of 7,482 boxes during the sales drive. Miller applauded her excellent sales skills and her initiative in selling to family and friends. Kamryn Good of Bixby was the top salesperson in Eastern Oklahoma.

Treasurer Miller said the statewide online contest, which ran from January 27 through March 25, was designed to promote the various leadership skills gained through Girl Scouts’ programs and encourage parents to learn more about saving for their child’s college education when they go online to vote for their favorite cookie.

“For 100 years now, Girl Scouts programs have helped young women develop leadership skills that they can practice now and in the future,” said Miller, Chairman of the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan. “The Girl Scouts and the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan both help our youth be prepared for the future and the challenges they may encounter.”

Katie’s mother, DeLee Francis explained that Katie worked day and night to sell cookies, telling everyone about the savings plan she wanted to earn for college.

“Katie spent all her spare time selling cookies because she wants to go to college for music,” DeLee Francis said. “She would sing and dance to get people to buy cookies.”

During the 100 year anniversary of the national program, the OCSP partnered with the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma and Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma councils on the “Vote for Oklahoma’s Favorite Girl Scout Cookie” contest which conducted an online vote at the OCSP website www.ok4saving.org during the annual Girl Scout Cookie sales.

In addition to the award for top-selling Girl Scout, the OCSP awarded $529 to Girl Scout Troop #3 from Tulsa who received the most votes as Oklahoma’s Favorite Girl Scout Troop. Kelly Vincent, Troop #3 leader, said the funds would be used to send the girls on a trip to England and France this June.

“It is a great time to get the money because the troop graduates in May and we are taking a trip to England and France this June,” Vincent said. “They are so excited they won. They worked so hard.”

The CEOs of Eastern and Western Oklahoma Girl Scouts expressed their appreciation for the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan offering the $1,529 towards an OCSP account to the top cookie salesperson saying it was a terrific way to remind young people about the very important goal of planning for college.

“And today, just a few days before the April 17th tax deadline, is the perfect opportunity to remind parents to open or contribute to their Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan,” said Miller. “It is never too early to begin saving for a child’s college education.”

About OCSP

Oklahoma taxpayers may deduct from their Oklahoma adjusted gross income up to $10,000 in contributions to the Oklahoma College Savings Plan for individual taxpayers and up to $20,000 for taxpayers filing a joint return with a five-year carry forward. Amounts deducted may be subject to recapture if a non-qualified withdrawal or rollover is taken (depending on the timing of such transactions), resulting in adverse Oklahoma income tax consequences. Read the Disclosure Booklet carefully.

All contributions and any earnings to an OCSP account are federal and Oklahoma income tax-deferred, and distributions are also federal and Oklahoma income tax-free when qualified withdrawals are made to fund an array of student expenses at most institutions of higher learning. Funds may be used at virtually any private or public university, college or career technology center nationwide, and the savings can be applied to tuition as well as other qualified expenses including fees, books, supplies and certain room and board costs.

Remington Park soon will be invaded by four-footed animals of a different kind during the 3rd annual Extreme Racing event. As part of live American Quarter Horse and Mixed Breed racing on Sunday, April 22, this unpredictable, family-friendly spectacle will begin at 1:30 p.m., with ostriches and camels competing for the Winner’s Circle in one race each throughout the afternoon.

Dale Day, Remington Park track announcer, said the popularity of Extreme Racing has grown each year. Last year’s event attracted more than 15,000 patrons to the racetrack and casino, marking the highest attended one-day event in 2011.

“This event continues to grow at an unbelievable rate,” said Day. “From the unexplainable intrigue of the exotic animals to the opportunity for folks to help raise funds for the local charities, this is a free and multifaceted event giving families a reason to get out of the house and experience something new and different.”

Sponsored by the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association, this year’s event again will include an additional community involvement portion explained Scott Wells, Remington Park president and general manager. Each exotic animal-professional jockey combination will be paired with a celebrity trainer who will choose a metro-area nonprofit organization as a partner. The winning animal’s nonprofit organization will receive a $1,000 donation from Remington Park in both the camel and ostrich race.

“In our third year to host this event along with the full support of the OQHRA, we are proud to showcase four deserving nonprofit groups that serve our community day in and day out,” said Wells. “Whether it is through a monetary donation or simply by helping create more awareness for their programs, we are honored to have them participate in this event.”

Additionally, the selected organizations will compete for the designation of Fan Favorite. During the event, the organizations will be invited to set up a booth on the Plaza and showcase their information as they collect donations from attendees. The organization that has collected the most funds through the eighth race will receive a matching donation of up to $1,000 from Remington Park. All other organizations will keep the funds they received throughout the competition.

The exotic animal races will take place Sunday, April 22 between live Quarter Horse and Mixed Breed races, which start at 1:30 p.m. The 1/16-mile camel race will feature four Arabian camels with speeds comparable to that of a horse while the five ostriches will race approximately 100 yards. There is no fee to attend the races. For more information, visit www.RemingtonPark.com or call (405) 424-1000.

On the heels of a recent expansion project moving the casino to the fifth largest in the state, the property has seen considerable growth in its 13 years of business within the Newcastle community.

Ryan Sykes, Newcastle Casino general manager, said the name change better reflects the facility as it is now. He said the casino has undergone many expansion projects throughout the years and received many enhancements along the way.

But returning to the place that supported your dreams so you could support another’s? All the sweeter.

Maggie McClure, Norman North High School 2005 alumna and nationally recognized singer/songwriter, is returning to perform in a benefit concert for Norman North’s 12th annual SPUD Week, or Students Performing Unselfish Deeds.

“I’m honored to be a part of this,” she said. “I’ve always been reminded I should give back, no matter what, and I think this is a really good cause. It feels really good to be able to participate, and hopefully a lot of people will come out to the show.”

To help raise funds for community members faced with financial struggles, McClure will perform alongside Shane Henry at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Nancy O’Brian Center for the Performing Arts, 1809 Stubbeman Ave., with opening act Regg.

Tickets are $5 each for students and $7 each for adults. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Seating is limited, and the show is open to the public and all ages.

For more information about the SPUD Week Benefit Show, visit the official Facebook page, www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100002926303982.

All proceeds will go to the recipients of Norman North’s SPUD Week 2012.

SPUD Week is organized entirely by the students, said Candy McKinney, Norman North faculty sponsor for SPUD Week. Students decide who the week will benefit after assessing submitted names and determining if finances will help the individuals’ situations.

This year, she said Justin Palmer, a Whittier Middle School student, and Alex Fical, a Norman North student, were chosen as the recipients.

Palmer, a seventh grader, recently underwent major neck surgery that left him with initial loss of almost all movement in his body. He is currently using a wheelchair and walker but hopes to be able to walk soon.

Fical, a 15-year-old student, had a prenatal brain hemorrhage that left him with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder. He is completely wheelchair bound and is taken care of by his family.

McKinney said though the recipients greatly benefit from the week, all the students reap rewards.

“Of course, the greatest reward is to help these families. I really just can’t explain it, they work so hard and it really comes from their heart — to have SPUD Week be a success,” she said. “It’s a real, close-knit time for the high school because the students change into giving, selfless students.”

Setting their goal higher than ever, McKinney said the students hope to raise $120,000 during SPUD events, which include a benefit concert, talent shows and more. Most of the events will take place between March 26 and April 2.

In its 12 years, SPUD Week has raised more than $513,800. McKinney said that wouldn’t be possible without the support of the students and community.

SPUD Week also will raise funds for the Norman Public School Foundation scholarships, she said, in honor of three faculty members who recently died: Walt Shaw, Cheri Speer and DeeAnn Cummins.

McClure said she remembers being a part of SPUD Week when she was a student, and she looks forward to an opportunity to help her hometown again.

“It’s really awesome to be a part of something bigger than yourself,” she said.

NORMAN, OKLA. –With one keyboard, one guitar, two captivating voices, and a full rhythm section, Maggie McClure and Shane Henry will lend their talents to help raise funds for Norman North High School’s 12th-annual SPUD Week. The benefit concert will take place Wednesday, March 14 at the Nancy O’ Brian Center for Performing Arts at 7 p.m., with opening act, Regg taking the stage first. All proceeds will go to Norman North’s SPUD Week 2012.

Organized by Norman North Student Council and a committee of high school students, SPUD Week stands for Students Performing Unselfish Deeds. Faculty sponsor Candy McKinney said this year’s student organizers set the fundraising goal of $120,000. In its 12 years, SPUD Week has raised more than $513,800.

"This weeklong, community-wide fundraiser is a time for Norman-area residents to celebrate our thriving and caring community,” said McKinney. “The students have worked hard to organize such great events and knew early on they wanted to have Maggie and Shane be a part of the festivities. It is refreshing to have them return to their home state and donate their time to help raise funds.”

McClure, a 2005 Norman North alumna, says the SPUD Week show is a great addition to their current "Onward March" Tour. McClure and Henry will perform a dozen shows in Oklahoma and Texas this month, then will return to Los Angeles, where they currently reside.

“Shane and I always enjoy performing for an Oklahoma audience,” said McClure. “I have performed for some amazing crowds in my career, but there is something indescribable about taking the stage in Oklahoma that cannot be replaced. Knowing that with this performance, we’re also giving back to some families who need support and comfort is an overwhelming feeling and truly an honor for us both.”

The SPUD Week Benefit Concert will take place Wednesday, March 14 at 7 p.m. inside the Nancy O’Brian Center for the Performing Arts, located at 1809 Stubbeman in Norman, Okla. Tickets are $5 each for students and $7 each for adults. Tickets may be purchased at the event that night. Seating is limited, and the show is open to the public and all ages.
In anticipation of the feature film, a discussion series about the popular trilogy begins on Monday at Full Circle Bookstore at 50 Penn Place. Local scholar and author John Granger, whom Time magazine called “the Dean of Harry Potter scholars,” is set to lead the series. Granger, of Oklahoma City, has shared his insights about the artistry and meaning behind several beloved book series through his books “The Deathly Hallows Lectures” and “Spotlight: A Close-up Look at The Artistry and Meaning of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga.”

“The Hunger Games” young adult book series chronicles the adventures of Katniss Everdeen, a youth living in the post-apocalyptic world of Panem, formerly the countries in North America. Katniss lives in one of 12 regions called districts, which are controlled by the tyrannical Capitol. The Capitol wields power over citizens in the districts in several ways, including the Hunger Games, a battle to the death in which two youths from each district are required to participate each year.

Granger said the trilogy written by Suzanne Collins features many elements that readers — and moviegoers — find compelling, starting with a courageous heroine who battles against powerful forces.

“Everything is written to draw you in so that you believe that you are Katniss Everdeen and you are transformed by her journey,” Granger said of “The Hunger Games,” the first book in the trilogy.

“We're totally sucked into her point of view and she's a likable character — the sacrificial daughter, the provider. You want so much for her to succeed.”

He said the books also contain other elements that draw readers: Star-crossed lovers in a lovers' triangle, the brutal reality TV-like Hunger Games and the David verses Goliath three-book story arc that pits Katniss and crew against evil President Snow and the Capitol. Granger said the trilogy is essentially a coming of age series that people of all ages can identify with.

And he said he found religious and political symbolism throughout that should make for interesting and thought-provoking discussions at Full Circle.

For example, Granger said the meadow where Katniss and her friend Gale regularly meet to go hunting is a metaphor for the Garden of Eden. He said the meadow is part of a spiritual allegory about a return to the purity and innocence of that biblical garden.

He said more religious symbolism can be found in the first gift that District 12 sends Katniss in the Hunger Games — a loaf of bread — which is a symbol of the hope of Christ.

Granger said political symbolism is found in the way Collins has framed Katniss' story throughout “The Hunger Games,” “Catching Fire” and the final book in the series “Mockingjay.” He said the story arc reminds him of George Orwell's classic novel “1984” because Collins, like Orwell, has crafted a story about a fictional world that is, in reality, about the real world. Granger said the series casts a cynical look at the voyeurism of reality TV and the brashness of Hollywood, to an extent. Then, Granger said the story also shows what can happen when the “other” or someone atypical dares challenge the status quo. After all, he said Katniss “speaks truth to power.”

“We think this is not about us when the whole thing is about us,” Granger said.

Ultimately, he said the books appear to be Collins' way of sharing her viewpoint about the destructiveness of war.
All of these themes have made for interesting discussions around the school cafeteria and water cooler, Granger said. He anticipates lively discussions at the bookstore as he and readers share their views about one of today's most popular fiction series.

Bricktown Brewery, known for its craft beers, last month opened a second location on the casino level at Remington Park.

Overlooking the racetrack’s finish line, the restaurant features the expected: a bar and a multitude of televisions. It also offers the unexpected: multilevel seating, a sight line to the outdoor four-story video screen and an amazing view of the entire track.

Remington Park kicks off quarter-horse racing season on Friday.

“Anticipation is always great for the start of a new racing year,” said Scott Wells, Remington Park president and general manager. “Guests can also enjoy great food and a perfect view of the finish line, all while just steps away from jackpot action.”

The excitement of horse racing usually cultivates some serious appetites. Luckily, the brewery has an impressive menu that, in gambler’s parlance, is a sure bet.

Wager on the beginnings that can be eaten as an appetizer or light meal. Typical fare includes nachos, chicken tenders and Buffalo wings. Eclectic tastes might like the fat Elvis fries (sweet potato fries covered in peanut butter sauce, chopped peppered bacon and dried bacon chips) or pimiento cheese served with veggies.

“We try and take bar food, then surprise you with how good it is,” said Buck Warfield, Enduring Brandings president, whose parent company owns the brewery. “Our basic food group is bourbon, bacon and beer, which are worked into most items.”

Variety is found throughout the burgers, sandwiches and classic entrée selections. A daily blue-plate special is served on a first-come, first-serve basis and includes pulled-pork tacos, chicken pot pie, as well as chicken and waffles.

Nice touches of Oklahoma pride are worked into the menu, too.

“The vibrancy of [Made in Oklahoma] has become a very big trend in restaurants. From peanuts to hot links, anything grown, packaged or produced [in Oklahoma] that we could find, we use,” said Warfield, adding that all the beer is made at the Bricktown Brewery. “No one is more local than we are.”

Handcrafted beers are the restaurant’s trademark. Five brews ranging from light to dark are regularly on tap. If specialty brews aren’t your thing, wine and a full bar are available, not to mention a host of domestic and imported beers.

Saddle up to the tap table and enjoy pouring your own beer. Hooked to kegs below the restaurant, four selections are available at $4.50 a pint. By providing a credit card, the machine is automated to provide two draws per drinker for each hour. The staff happily teaches how to appropriately fill a beer glass from a keg. That is mighty important when you consider the amount of foam that can form at the glass’ rim.

The table seats 12 to 15 patrons and reservations are accepted. Call 419-4449 or visitbricktownbrewery.com.

Hollywood Extra, a horse owned by Larry “Potts” Kettles and his wife, Nelda, appeared in the Oscar-nominated movie “War Horse.” The horse is shown Wednesday on their ranch in Guthrie. Photos by David McDaniel, The Oklahoman

Unlike Oklahoma native Brad Pitt, who is nominated for Best Actor for his role in “Moneyball,” this actor lives in the Sooner state. He's not nominated for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor, but he played an important role in the movie “War Horse,” nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture.

This little guy was right around two weeks old when he made his film debut as the colt “Joey” in “War Horse,” the story of a thoroughbred horse sold to the British cavalry in World War I, and a young soldier's journey to get him back.

Hollywood Extra — his racing name — and owners Larry “Potts” Kettles and Nelda Kettles will be at Remington Park from 1:30-3:30 p.m. March 4 for a public meet and greet. The horse will be available for photos, perhaps some petting and the Kettleses will talk about their movie star.

The colt is now a handsome yearling, spending his days in a pasture and nights in a stall at CK Running Horses in Guthrie, under the care of the Kettleses and their grooms.
The birth of any thoroughbred is serious business. Breeders generally want their mares to foal from late February to May.

In late 2010 and early 2011,” War Horse” director Steven Spielberg began looking for specific horses for specific jobs.

In a 2011 interview with Orange Film News, a U.K. site, Spielberg said eight horses were used in the production with two horses doing most of the work. The other six were specialty horses who could run without a rider, or in Hollywood Extra's case, lay on the ground covered in glycerin goo beside another horse so he'd look like a new foal.
The problem with this particular role was the colt had to be bay (brown), and he had to actually to be 7 to 10 days old to retain the look of a newborn.

A nationwide search was launched. The movie's head trainer contacted his contacts, including Robin Pettigrew, an animal procurer for movies as well as a trainer.

Pettigrew, who lives in Albuquerque, N.M., called everyone she knew, including her father, Bob Powell from Luther, who has horses of his own. He called his friends.
He found the Kettleses had a brand new bay colt.

The Kettles took pictures and sent them to Pettigrew, who sent them to Spielberg. He had photos of another new bay colt, one born in California, where they were going to film the birth scene. Spielberg chose the Oklahoma colt.

Pettigrew got several calls during the next day as plans were made and scrapped and made again. She finally got word to head to head to Guthrie with a large horse trailer and a truck.

At first Potts Kettles said he thought it was a practical joke.

“We got a call saying someone was looking for a bay colt for a Spielberg movie,” he said, grinning. “I thought it was a joke.

“We e-mailed some pictures and they told us it was between two colts, but they took ours. The next thing we know this big fancy van pulled up.”

The Kettleses received contracts and insurance forms, and they signed them, leasing their horses to the movie production and insuring both colt and its mama, Time For A Makeover.

“They told me to be in California on Monday,” Pettigrew said in a phone interview from Albuquerque, where she is working on the new “Lone Ranger” movie.

“I left Albuquerque on Wednesday, headed for Oklahoma City. I got here, stayed with my dad and we went out and had a look at the bay, praying he was the right shade,” she explained.

Pettigrew left Friday with the mare and colt in tow. She drove two hours and would stop for 30 minutes so the still-unnamed colt could nurse and the mare could walk around a bit. They spent the night in Albuquerque and left Saturday night for the drive to the movie set.

“That was the kindest mare,” the trainer recalled. “She took good care of that baby. He was good too. When his mama walked up the ramp into the trailer, he followed her right in.”

She let mother and son rest Sunday, and Monday started training “Baby War Horse” how to lie down on command and he had learned it well by Tuesday.

The filmmakers thought it would take five days to shoot the birth scene. Pettigrew said the animals were monitored closely to make sure none were harmed.

The movie set was in a huge pasture, full of tents, trailers, all the necessities for making a film. The colt was treated much like a child is treated on a set. He could work for 30 minutes and get an hour break.

He also got hair and makeup. He had a non-toxic paint applied to his face and body to match the star of the movie, then he was covered with glycerin to appear to be a newborn foal.

“We couldn't use a halter, lead or anything on the baby,” Pettigrew said. “But he was real smart. He caught on quick and would lie down right where I put him and stay there until he heard cut.”

In a strange twist, the horse posing as Hollywood Extra's mother actually is a gelding. He behaved too. There was one hitch. After one take, the colt got up, looked around and ran through the tent area, running right by where Spielberg was watching monitors.

“We had been told to leave Mr. Spielberg alone,” Pettigrew said. “But after that, he came out and asked if he could pet the baby. Before we were finished he was petting all the horses.”

The movie crew got their shot in one day.

“I left the ranch at 4:30 a.m. to get to the set at 6:30 a.m., and we were finished by 2 p.m.,” she said. “That colt was so sticky and had on all that makeup. I took him to the barn and he stood there while I washed him off with a pail of water and his mama let me do it.”

Pettigrew kept the mare and colt on set a few more days, then brought them back to Guthrie.

“The Kettles are the greatest people,” she continued. “They let me drive right up to their place and trusted me with that mare and baby. I can't say enough about them. I really appreciated them. It took a lot of faith to give those horses to someone they didn't know.”

Flash forward a year later.

The Kettles are standing outside the barn in the gravel driveway along with a rangy dark bay colt. He's friendly, sniffing the strange people but strangely calm with the cameras so near.

“He was gone about two weeks,” Nelda Kettles said. “He looked so good when he came home. He'd been well taken care of, but of course he got groomed every day.”

This particular Wednesday morning, Hollywood Extra still has his fuzzy winter coat.

“He's got the correct confirmation, and he's got some great experience for his age,” Potts Kettles said. “Later this year, he'll go to the couple who starts our horses for breaking and training.

“We may race him next year as a two-year old and see how he does and he'll race as a three-year-old too.”
Pettigrew is confident he'll do well.

“I hope he's a great race horse and does other things after he races and is a nice horse,” she said. “He's all business. I mean, he was 12 days old and doing things well, so I hope he still has all his business two years from now.”

The Quarter-Horse Season at Remington Park starts March 2. For more information on meeting Hollywood Extra, call (405) 424-1000 or go online to www.remingtonpark.com.

Newcastle, Okla. – In honor of National Blood Donor Month, Newcastle Gaming Center is partnering with the Oklahoma Blood Institute to stock their reserves and hopefully save lives in our state. The metro-area casino will host OBI’s mobile donation unit during a blood drive Saturday, Jan. 28 from noon to 4:30 p.m.

Jennifer Cross, Newcastle Gaming Center marketing manager, said the casino hopes to create awareness for OBI’s mission and constant need for blood donations.

“We are honored to partner with OBI and encourage community members to donate blood, as long as they are willing and able,” said Cross. “While donors never know the full impact of their donation, it is important for everyone to know there is no replacement for human blood. One person taking 30 minutes out of a busy work day can mean the world to another Oklahoman whose life that blood donation has saved.”

The blood drive will take place Saturday, Jan. 28 from noon to 4:30 p.m. inside the OBI’s mobile donation unit, which will be parked directly outside Newcastle Gaming Center. Donors must be at least 18 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and present a valid photo ID at the time of donation.

All donors will receive a free health screening, a complimentary blue, acrylic tumble and OBI Donor Reward Points. Additionally, patrons who are able to donate will receive $10 in casino Rewards Play to show appreciation for their donation. For more information or to make an appointment, donors may call the Oklahoma Blood Institute at (877) 340-8777.

And at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, GGS has enhanced that potential, Vice President of Supply Chain and Development Greg Pittman says.

Recently, the company completed a revitalization project on the park, which is a horserace track and casino that opened in 1986. “It was a state-of-the-art, high-end facility when it was originally built,” Pittman says.

However, when sales declined, the owner stopped investing in Remington Park. “It was a property that had a lot of deferred maintenance,” Pittman says, adding that conditions improved in 2006, when electronic games were added. “That’s when it started to get better.”
REVITALIZING REMINGTON
Things further improved when GGS acquired Remington Park in 2010. Immediately, the company started a $15 million revitalization project that needed to be completed by the fall. “We had to have it all completed before the thoroughbred race reason, [which] started in August,” Pittman explains.

For the project, Global Gaming hired BELFOR USA, which specializes in disaster recovery and property restoration. “That was our first time with them,” Pittman says, noting the company also utilized multiple subcontractors, including Midwest Commercial Construction, “who we use on the majority of our projects.”

Before construction started on the facility, GGS surveyed its customers and asked them what they thought would make the park better. “We did the majority of what they told us to do,” Pittman recalls, adding that the company added a plaza area outside of the racetrack with a 15-foot-high waterfall and grassy areas. “The idea was to make it a fun place that families want to go to.”

He adds that this goal carried into the building with high-end carpets, fresh coats of paint and new audio/visual features. For instance, “We [added] 47-inch TVs with all new flat screens,” he says.

“We have an outdoor video display screen [that] is four and a half stories tall by 60 feet wide,” he says. Additionally, Remington Park implemented a second screen that is 22 feet tall and 60 feet wide.

With the screens, Remington Park can utilize interactive features during the horse races and display information about the horse, odds and jockeys. “In between, we’ll be displaying fun stuff like a kissing contest, trivia games and OU College games,” he says. “There’s always something going on.”
FOLLOWING THE TIMELINE
Pittman is pleased with the work of BELFOR USA, as well as the subcontractors. “We had actually no issues with the general contractor or subs,” he says. “When you’re talking about doing something in that period, it was a miracle.”

This was especially true when it came to the challenges that Mother Nature presented, Pittman says. In the middle of the project, the area experienced a major hailstorm and rainstorm, which led the company to speed up its process after both had passed.

“We literally had to have it running [by August or] we would have had to cancel those races,” Pittman admits. “The impact financially and from a relationship side would have been huge. A lot of people’s livelihoods were at stake if we did not follow that timeline.”

The hard work of the project team has paid off, Pittman reports. “Attendance has jumped over 25 percent,” he says. “We have received more press in this last year than ever.”

In addition, the Remington Park property is being used year round for many types of events, including parties, proms, anniversaries and meetings. “It’s a multi-use property,” he says. “We’ve been able to run boxing there.”

This summer, Remington Park also has held movie nights with its large outdoor screens. “It’s almost like an outdoor drive-in,” he reports.
GAMING FOCUSED
Based in Ada, Okla., GGS also focuses on emerging gaming markets, and providing management, transaction and development services to others in the gaming industry. The Chickasaw Nation owns the company, which focuses on opportunities in the United States and overseas.

Pittman notes that GGS has used BELFOR USA since the Remington Park project. Currently, the two are working together on a revitalization of Lone Star Park, a large horseracing park in Grand Prairie, Texas. “[It will be] completed by the end of February 2012,” he predicts, noting that the project has a budget of nearly $4 million.

THACKERVILLE, Okla. ––Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby, along with several elected officials and community members, gathered Thursday, Nov. 30 to break ground on a new hotel tower at WinStar World Casino.

The new, 18-story hotel tower will be located adjacent to the existing 12-story WinStar Hotel. It will offer casino resort guests an added dimension in luxurious accommodations with 500 upscale guest rooms.

“This project is a significant step toward our goal of expanding WinStar’s appeal as a first-class entertainment destination,” said Gov. Anoatubby. “We believe this new hotel will enhance the positive economic impact WinStar has in this area by employing more local residents and bringing more visitors to the area."

The new tower, which has not yet been named, will share a grand entrance with the existing WinStar Hotel. The two hotels will also share a new luxury pool and garden oasis with about 50,000 square feet of lush landscaping, several pools, spas and other water features.

The new hotel tower was designed by Nhedak Bobo, the architect firm which designed the award-winning Riverwind Casino in Norman, Okla. Flintco, a Native American firm headquartered in Oklahoma City, will serve as general contractor. Construction is expected to be complete in the summer of 2013. Once complete, the new hotel tower is expected to employ an additional 150 people.

This latest project comes on the heels of the construction of a new 1,400-space parking lot and a 54,000-square-foot expansion of WinStar World, which will include more games, two new restaurants and a multi-purpose room on the north end of the facility.

The new exterior of the expansion project will feature an elaborate porte-cochère covered entryway and a metal replica of the 1960 World’s Fair Globe.
The project, as a whole, is designed to create a ‘grand’ aesthetic that includes details reminiscent of turn-of-the-century transportation and port-of-call facilities in the golden age of travel.
The gaming expansion and the new entryway are expected to be completed in the spring of 2012.

About WinStar World Casino
The world's third largest casino, WinStar World Casino offers more than 6,500 electronic games, 76 blackjack and poker tables, a 3,000-seat Global Events Center and a new 395-room hotel. Added games, personnel changes provide families with safe, interactive entertainment option

ADA, OKLA. – Officials with Lazer Zone Family Fun Center announced recent renovations and management initiatives that are expected to enhance the overall entertainment experience for Ada-area families at the nearly 60,000 square-foot facility. Including a wide range of family activities, Lazer Zone is in its eighth year and has grown to be a popular entertainment spot in the region.

One of the most notable changes to take place in recent months is the appointment of Ken Hoyle as Lazer Zone’s general manager. He has been on the job since February. Hoyle said his goal is to make Lazer Zone the most family-oriented arcade and fun house in the area.

“As an established entertainment destination, we constantly evaluate ways in which we could better serve our patrons,” Hoyle said. “These changes will enhance many aspects of the facility. From increasing our fun-factor with new games to enhancing the level of security with additional staff members and lighting, these improvements together raise the level of service we provide patrons.”

Hoyle said improvements include new arcade games, new and additional management members as well as added exterior and interior lighting. He also said additional improvements and promotions are planned throughout 2012, helping to solidify Lazer Zone as the premier full-scale entertainment destination in southeastern Oklahoma.

Owned and operated by the Chickasaw Nation, Lazer Zone originally opened October 4, 2004. Since its opening, the full-scale entertainment arena facility has been a popular option for families looking for fun, affordable activities in the region. It includes 24 lanes of bowling, a two-story, 6,500 square-foot laser tag arena, 4,000 square-foot arcade room with three-stall batting cages, mini-golf and a full-service eater, which features pizza, hot dogs and other food and drink items the entire family will enjoy.
“Having just celebrated our 7th anniversary as part of the Ada community, we are proud to know our facility continues to grow,” Hoyle said. “The staff’s dedication and hard work is paying off and we’re seeing that patrons are noticing and appreciate the improvements.”

Lazer Zone Family Fun Center is open Sunday from noon to 10 p.m., Monday and Tuesday from 6 to 10 p.m., Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m., Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from noon to midnight and is closed Wednesday. Emerging Oklahoma-based company provides new social media marketing solutions

OKLAHOMA CITY – Officials with Remington Park are partnering with an emerging Oklahoma-based company, providing a new approach to and use for various social media platforms. The SpokesME event will take place Friday, Nov. 25 starting at 1 p.m. at Remington Park. Roughly 20 members of the SpokesME team will be at the racetrack and casino during this pilot project, which will give patrons special incentives for becoming a digital spokesperson for the facility.

Founded by Jay Wright, an Oklahoma native and graduate of Oklahoma City University, SpokesME.com is an online-based platform for businesses and other venues to incentivize customers and fans to post positive comments, engage with the brand, and like and follow the business on social media. Wright says the company’s main focus is to provide clients with advertising and marketing solutions of an organic nature, helping the business build a loyal fan-base of socially connected new and repeat customers.

“Social media has revolutionized the advertising and marketing industries significantly over the past few years,” says Wright. “Not only must marketers be more engaging and aggressive with capturing the power social media can lend to brand development, but also they must continue to constantly grow, monitor and interact with that audience. Our goal is to help companies seamlessly convert connections from social media platforms into a digital endorsement by offering them exclusive discounts, rewards and other offers to those who will provide positive online content about the business and share that with their connections.”

He maintains that SpokesME is pioneering an entirely new industry they refer to as Incentivized Social Advertising.

Although this is the first major SpokesME event, Wright says the company has clients throughout Oklahoma City, including the Wedge Pizzeria and Café Nova, and a user-base of more than 77,000. The average SpokesME user has more than 700 social media connections and typically is viewed as a cost-conscious, tech-savvy consumer.
Yenni Vance, Remington Park digital communications and social media manager, says she is thrilled to work with Wright and his team on this event.

“We're very excited to work with representatives from SpokesME during this pilot project taking place on Black Friday at Remington Park,” Vance says. “This is an Oklahoma-based company and website that represents the finest in entrepreneurship and innovation. It should be a rewarding experience for everyone involved.”

To participate in the event, the company will have 20 representatives each with a tablet computer, walking Remington Park patrons through the registering for a SpokesME account and connecting with Remington Park’s via social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter. Once they have completed those steps, the patron is encouraged to post a positive comment about their experience at the popular racetrack and casino. That comment then is shared with the patrons connections. In exchange for their comments, Remington Park will provide each patron with $5 in free play, redeemable in the casino.

The Black Friday event will take place Friday, Nov. 25 starting at 1 p.m. at Remington Park. SpokesME representatives will be located at both entrances of the building. There is no registration fee to participate. Parking and admission are always free at Remington Park. Patrons must be at least 18 years old to enter the casino or wager at Remington Park.
Newcastle Gaming Center’s expansion project adds gaming machines, gift shop and entertainment stage
Sixth expansion project in 13 years moves facility to fifth largest in the state

NEWCASTLE, OKLA. – Officials with Newcastle Gaming Center today opened an additional 16,000 square feet of gaming, retail and entertainment space. Originally opened in 1998, this expansion project places Newcastle Gaming Center as the fifth largest gaming facility in Oklahoma.

Ryan Sykes, Newcastle Gaming Center general manager, said this is the sixth expansion project to take place at the gaming center in its 13 years of business and was needed due to an increase in patronage.

“The focus of Newcastle Gaming Center always has been and will be on its relationships with our patrons, employees and community partners,” said Sykes. “In its relatively short existence, we have seen consistent growth not only in the facility itself but also in the number of jobs we provide in the surrounding communities.”

Jennifer Cross, Newcastle Gaming Center marketing manager, said the Newcastle-area facility now employs 700 people, up from the roughly 10 employees at the facility when it was opened. She also said the expansion will include nearly 500 new electronic games as well as a new entertainment stage that will feature local acts and a retail shop with designs from well-known designers Steve Madden, Betsey Johnson and Brighton.

“Not only does this expansion include additional gaming amenities, it also increases our entertainment footprint and offers patrons a shopping option as well,” said Cross. “We saw remarkable attendance during our summer concert series and realize our patrons are interested in more regular performances. This stage will fulfill that patron demand as well as give local bands a place to showcase their talents.”

Sykes also noted an additional 225 parking spaces were added when a new parking lot was paved in an area east of the current lot. This brings the total number of parking spaces to 1,550.

The gaming facility’s opening festivities continue this weekend with special promotions planned today through Sunday. Each day, the first 500 people to enter the casino will get a free Newcastle Gaming Center expansion t-shirt. Attendees also will experience strolling entertainment throughout the gaming centers expansion area as well as live entertainment on the new stage.

Special to DFW.com
Posted 2:25pm on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011

THACKERVILLE, OK -- Superstar group Rascal Flatts put on an amazing show for the capacity crowd of 3,000 fans that packed the WinStar World Casino's Global Events Center on October 16. Rascal Flatts (Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus, and Joe Don Rooney) has developed a loyal following over the past decade, producing 11 No.1 hits including Bless the Broken Road , which sat atop the charts for five consecutive weeks in 2005 and What Hurts the Most , which topped the country charts for three weeks and crossed over to No. 1 on the Billboard adult contemporary charts for nine weeks. My Wish, a No. 1 hit from 2006, has gained a new life as the theme song for the ESPN series of the same name (the show features sports fantasies come true).

And, course, there is their cover of Life is a Highway from the Pixar film Cars.

On this night when they played a 90-minute set that included many of their hits, my favorite part was the band's interaction with the crowd in this intimate setting. After bass guitarist Jay DeMarcus pointed out that the crowd appeared to be "500-to-1 ladies to guys," he introduced lead guitarist Joe Don Rooney as "what Justin Bieber will look like in 30 years." Following a knowing glance from Rooney, DeMarcus quickly corrected himself by saying, "35 years."

Rascal Flatts mixed in covers of songs from Kansas and Michael McDonald, going as far as wondering what it would sound like when McDonald ordered a meal "biggie-sized" at Wendy's. Lead vocalist Gary LeVox also made mention that the band had recently been inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, drawing huge applause from the adoring fans. Actually, the crowd ate up everything in the performance like it was a perfect steak from Bob's Steak and Chop House.

The encore featured the three members on stage performing the ballad I Won't Let Go. Before the lights came up and the crowd spilled out into the third largest casino in the world, Gary LeVox's closing words were "God bless our military and God bless our military's families."

Following the show, we ventured over to the sparkling Palladium Sports Lounge between Cairo and Vienna gaming areas, for some hot wings before heading back to Fort Worth. For a complete listing of upcoming shows at WinStar World Casino, visit here.

We will strive to accommodate our patrons with unique merchandise as well as to become known as a boutique shop for special occasion shopping.”

Local artists announced for inaugural MANifesto’s art challenge
Two-day festival in historic Film Row to offer alternative take on art show, complete with manly activities everyone can enjoy

OKLAHOMA CITY – Councilwoman Meg Salyer today announced four local artists selected to participate in a first-time art challenge that will transform donated materials into gigantic sculptures. The art challenge will be featured as the main component of MANifesto, a new-to-the-metro, two-day festival to be held October 15 and 16 in Oklahoma City’s historic Film Row.

The Oklahoma City-based artists will be charged with recycling the donated materials, no matter their shape, size or origin, into a sculpture that best reflects the spirit of Film Row AND a manly movie. They now will have 30 days to create fully their sculpture. Selected artists are Blake Christ, Jack Fowler, Kyle Golding and Scott Henderson. Companies contributing materials are St. Anthony’s Hospital, BMI Image Net, Classic Stone & Tile and Film Row.

Rachel Hernandez, president of The Exchange and MANifesto organizer, said the artists each will be paired with a local business that has a constant stream of unique materials.

“MANifesto combines the very best components from a typical art show with those of an outdoor festival,” said Hernandez. “On top of that, we have added a few unexpected activities like a living moustache museum, a lucha libre-style wrestling exhibition and extreme hot dog eating contest.”

Councilwoman Meg Salyer said this unique festival demonstrates the forward-thinking that has helped revitalize historic Film Row as well as continue to expand the metro area’s arts community.

“This is a wonderful collaboration of artistic minds, visionary business leaders and extreme event organizers who understand the power and value of arts in our community,” said Salyer. “There could be no better place for such a unique event than historic Film Row.”

The final sculptures will be on display in the HART building throughout MANifesto. Other activities on the festival’s schedule include: the Living Moustache Museum, which will take place in the front windows of IAO Gallery; fortune telling with The Lost Ogle; a book signing for the Art of Manliness; a tire-changing contest; a lucha libra-style wrestling exhibition; and
hotdog-eating contest.

MANinfesto will take place Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., both days. The two-day festival will be located in Oklahoma City’s historic Film Row on Sheridan Avenue between Shartel and Dewey. There is no admission fee, and it is open to the public. Food and beverage options will be available for purchase. For more information, visit www.exchange-revolution.com/manifesto or call (405) 601-9200.

State Treasurer Miller announces Kids on College Survey Sweepstakes
Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan partners with GAP Stores to celebrate Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan Month

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - State Treasurer Ken Miller today challenged Oklahoma kindergarten through fifth grade students and their parents to test their knowledge about college and its future costs during September – Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan Month . As part of the Kids on College Survey Sweepstakes, the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan (OCSP) has partnered with GAP Stores in Oklahoma to give six Oklahoma children $529 each toward an OCSP college savings account.

Governor Mary Fallin has proclaimed September as Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan Month in the state.

Miller, who also serves as board chair for the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan, said the inaugural Kids on College Survey Sweepstakes is meant to increase children and parents’ knowledge of the importance of saving for college – encouraging families to complete the survey together.

“It is never too early for children to learn more about college, its related costs and necessary preparation – both academically and financially,” he said. “We hope this survey starts the conversation between a parent and child as well as encourages the entire family to get a plan in place that increases the child’s chances for future success in higher education.”

The Kids on College Survey Sweepstakes runs from Thursday, September 1 through Friday, September 30, 2011. To enter the sweepstakes, and obtain official rules, parents and guardians of all kindergarten through fifth grade students in Oklahoma can log on to www.ok4saving.org/kidsoncollege by September 30, 2011.

Once a parent-child team completes the survey, they may download a coupon for $25 off purchase of $100 or more to be redeemed at a participating GAP Stores in Oklahoma. Also, the child automatically will be entered into the sweepstakes. One child from each grade – kindergarten through fifth – will be chosen at random to receive $529 toward an Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan account. Additionally, the winning child’s school will receive $529 to help fund its arts and music program. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.

Helping to create awareness of Kids on College Survey Sweepstakes during Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan Month, OCSP officials have partnered with GAP Stores in Oklahoma. Aileen Miller, GAP Stores district manager, said store managers across the state are excited to take part in this partnership, which will give back to schools in local communities.

“We are thrilled to join the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan and promote this fun, interactive survey sweepstakes in our nine stores across the state,” she said. “Not only are we giving back to those who complete the survey with a special savings coupon to use in-store throughout September, but also this partnership, as a whole, gives back to the communities in which we operate. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

Oklahoma taxpayers may deduct from their Oklahoma adjusted gross income up to $10,000 in contributions to the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan for individual taxpayers and up to $20,000 for taxpayers filing a joint return with a five-year carryforward.* Amounts deducted may be subject to recapture if a non-qualified withdrawal or rollover is taken (depending on the timing of such transactions), resulting in adverse Oklahoma income tax consequences.

Remington Park, Focus Consulting to attract tech-savvy professionals and raise funds for Regional Food Bank with ‘Tweet Up’
Event is state’s first live racing and casino networking social

OKLAHOMA CITY – Officials in two very different sectors are partnering to bring tech-savvy, metro-area professionals together to share business ideas and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. Remington Park and Focus Consulting have partnered to host the state’s first Live Racing and Casino Networking Social on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. inside Remington Park’s Eclipse room.

Commonly referred to as a Tweet Up, Yenni Vance, Remington Park social media manager, said this event gives professionals who communicate primarily through social media forums, like Twitter and LinkedIn, an opportunity to meet face-to-face and build their business relationship.

“Social media has emerged as an alternative form of communication, in recent years and influences many aspects of our lives, especially in professional settings,” Vance said. “Social media’s versatility has proven it can be used to market a product, learn about an industry’s best practices or connect with another professional in a different field. This event enables professionals who have connected online the chance to grow their existing relationship, share business experiences and network.”

Patrick Allmond, Focus Consulting owner and principal, said the event demonstrates the power of social media in connecting diverse businesses with unique opportunities. He pointed out very few conventional business communication practices would place a horseracing track and online communications consulting firm in a partnership such as this.

“This event is focused on connecting the state’s professionals with one another, which, in turn, will continue to build our state’s economy,” Allmond said. “It makes no difference the sector in which a company operates; social media has no boundaries. This is about continuing to market Oklahoma in the global market.”

The Live Racing and Casino Networking Social will take place Thursday, Sept. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Remington Park. Event registration is a donation fee of $10, which will be donated fully to The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. All paid registrants attending the event will receive one raffle ticket and $5 in FREE play that can be used toward casino games or pari-mutuel wagering. Registration is limited. To register, visit www.OKCCasinoSocial.com. Parking and admission are always free at Remington Park. Patrons must be at least 18 years old to enter the casino or wager at Remington Park.
