Starting October 15th, Carly Starr will assume to role of KOCT’s Executive Director. Carly has been working in film & media branding her entire career life - producing, writing, directing, shooting, and editing at all levels. In addition, she is responsible for the creative vision, direction and production behind over 300 films, many for non-profit organizations and their causes.

Her production company, Love Machine Films, has produced several award-winning works that have helped raise over 20 million dollars for various non-profits and causes. Before starting Love Machine Film, Carly got her start here as KOCT’s first female Director in the 1990s. Tom Reeser, the current Executive Director since 1987, is retiring on October 26th. He and the KOCT staff are excited that Carly is back and ready to continue producing excellent content for the residents of Oceanside.

KOCT-North County’s Channel has produced a number of November 2018 election programs to help voters become informed about the many candidates running for local offices and about the controversial SOAR initiative.

Alison St John, the North County Reporter for KPBS, hosted two North County Roundtable programs. One 60-minute program featured Pro and Con representatives for the SOAR initiative, Measure Y. This program features four guests and their perspectives about this zoning ordinance for agriculture and open space land. Alison also interviewed one of the candidates for the 76th State Assembly District Elizabeth Warren (Tasha Boerner-Horvath declined to appear).

KOCT Host Kent Davy also hosted a number of North County Roundtable programs, including one 30-minute program featuring the two candidates running for the 5th District County Board of Supervisor position and two 60-minute programs featuring candidates for Oceanside City Council District 1 and District 2.

KOCT also invited candidates to record or submit 5-minute Candidate Statements, which allow candidates to articulate, in their own words, reasons why voters should cast their ballots for them.

All of these programs will air extensively on KOCT’s Channel 18 right up until the November 6th Election.

The film festival invites the public to this special event that will kick off with a very special premiere screening of TNT’s crime drama, Animal Kingdom. In attendance  will  be  Shawn  Hatosy,  known  by  fans  for  playing  the complicated eldest son “Pope” on the show. After the screening, Hatosy will be  joined  by  Animal Kingdom co-Executive  Producer  and  acclaimed writer Daniele Nathanson  for  a  Q&A  session  with  audience.

County of San Diego Supervisor - 5th District, Bill Horn, delivered his annual State of North County address on Tuesday. We will get a recap of his presentation and discuss current issues and his priorities as North County’s representative of County Government.

Oceanside Councilmember Jerry Kern serves on the Community Engagement Panel of the decommissioning of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). We will discuss the progress thus far as well as the advancement toward moving the remaining nuclear fuel from the site.

Councilmember Cori Schumacher is the newest member of the Carlsbad City Council. We will learn about her life and career as a pro surfer and what motivated her to run for City Council. We will ask her why she was the lone vote against a proposal in Carlsbad to log and capture the identity of every vehicle which enters the City of Carlsbad. We will also discuss last year’s tumultuous vote when a Los Angeles developer proposed to build a mall on Carlsbad’s strawberry fields.

The host of this long-running monthly series is Kent Davy, the former Editor for the North County Times. He will be joined by Alison St. John, the KPBS North County Bureau Editor, and North County Editor for the San Diego Union-Tribune, Melanie Marshall.

KOCT – North County’s Channel received great honors this past week at the Western Access Video Excellence (WAVE) Award Ceremony.
The Ceremony was held during the Alliance for Community Media (ACM) West Region Conference which featured other Public Education Government (PEG) access stations from Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, and New Mexico.
The conference held education workshops, discussed the future of community media, displayed the latest in video equipment and provided media resource networking opportunities.   Station Manager, Jake Rush attended the conference and award ceremony to accept six awards on behalf of KOCT :
