I can somewhat understand that a few people could probably fall for these types of phishing attacks. Especially if they are new to internet banking and email.

However, I don’t think I’d be able to understand if anyone would fall for the above phishing email. Check it out – First it says my CIMB account  is suspended (ok.. lets not get into typo errors there). Then, they say Thank you from Malayan Banking Berhad (CIMB Bank).

Would you fall for this?

Ok. Here’s a note for all who are reading this. Your banks do not and will not send emails to you with regards to your bank account. I think they don’t even send marketing emails to you. So, have this in mind – Banks in Malaysia Do Not and Will Not send emails to their customers.

I wanted to reply with a tweet. However, I think 140 characters will not be enough.

First, Mr Teoh, may I change the question a little bit to “Why are Some Muslims willing to eat in a place that serves alcohol but not one that serves pork?” There.. that’s a much better question because, a lot (perhaps a majority) of Muslims do not and will not eat nor drink at places that serves alcohol or pork.

Muslims and Alcohol

The general public surely knows that Islam forbids alcohol consumption. However, exposure to alcohol does not warrant for a tanning wash (Samak) that is required of exposure to pork. A normal wash with clean water and soap will suffice. That goes to all food utensils that are exposed to alcohol.

Truth is, Muslims are not encouraged (actually, closer to forbidden) to drink, eat or hang out in places where only alcohol is served. If the place serves regular food and drinks, we are permitted to eat and drink there.

Muslims and Pork

Islam forbids pork consumption. That I assume everyone knows. What many don’t know is that exposure to pork requires a thorough and complete tanning wash to clean up – Samak in Bahasa Malaysia. A normal clean water and soap wash is not sufficient. This is required on everything that is exposed to pork – transport, storage, knives, cups, glasses, plates, spoons, forks, etc.

That my friends and Patrick Teoh, is why some of these Muslims are willing to eat and drink in places where alcohol is served but not where pork is served. At least from my point of view as I don’t really know their actual reasons.

For me, given the only choice between a place that serves alcohol and a place that serves pork, I will choose the place that serves alcohol. However, today, there are just way too many options that does not serve any of them. So, really.. there really is no reason for Muslims to drink, dine or hangout in places that serves alcohol or pork.

Some say they are forced due to work or business commitment. Well, you surely can request that the business or work be done in some other location right? All you need to do is ask.. not too hard to do.

Now, a disclaimer.. I am not a scholar in Islamic Laws. My view comes from my somewhat limited search in Google and my existing knowledge. Get in touch with the many Islamic bodies available in Malaysia if you need detailed clarification about this.

Welcome To The World

We went to the Maternity ward of Hospital Tuanku Fauziah, Kangar the day before – August 2nd, 2011 at about 3pm after Super Mom (my dearest Mona Azwa), noticed some blood (they call it “The Show”). She was then warded, after the MO performed a number of checks.

So, she stayed at the maternity ward and I went back home. At about 2:30am August 3rd 2011, I received an SMS from Super Mom. She was going into the labor room. They were going to break her water bag. At 3:30am, I drove over to the maternity ward.

This time around, I am not aloud to be by her side during labor. So, it’s her first time going into labor on her own. So, off I went to the warong in front of the hospital. “Sahur” at about 4:00am. A little too early than usual for me. Rather be early than having to rush things later on.

At about 5:30am, they called me up. They are taking the baby to me. I was then given the opportunity to read the azan and iqamah to the baby. After which, the baby is then taken back into the ward. They also gave me the placenta.

Right now, I am tinkering with two names for the baby. It’s now down to Qashid and Qushayri. Insyallah..

I have to admit that I was shocked too upon reading the headlines about this that reads:

“Tourism Ministry: RM1.8 Million Spent On Facebook Pages”

“RM1.8 million for six Facebook pages”

“Tourism Minister spend RM1.8 million for Facebook page”

However, after reading and visiting the said FanPage (only one was provided), I think the RM1.8M total cost of the project is logical.

Here’s why I think that the cost is logical.

It’s actually more than just 6 Facebook Fan Pages.

It’s a Tourism Malaysia Marketing Campaign with 6 Facebook Fan Pages as the front end. Behind the Facebook Fan Pages are applications, games, email marketing, databases, hardware, infrastructure, consultancy, development, training and many more items that involve costs. These we don’t see.

Hardware and Infrastructure?

Well, if you are asking why do they need hardware and infrastructure for Facebook Fan Pages, read on. Unless you are building your FanPages using Static FBML (which is no longer made available easily), you need a webserver to host your Fanpage.

Yes, they could probably save some of the hardware costs by hosting the pages, applications and games on the cloud with services from EmbunWeb, Amazon and many more. However, those still come with costs.

Applications?

These are backend applications that provide the Ministry with data collection, management and manipulation. It integrates the Facebook front end Fan Pages and games with the Ministry’s existing applications for reporting and whatnot. There may be a number of applications already or being developed for the Ministry.

Games?

The Fan Pages are built with games on them to entice people to “Like” and become “Fans” of the page. Admittedly, the game presented on the Tourism Malaysia ~ Cuti Cuti 1Malaysia page is not something that I would talk about nor recommend.

I can only hope and wish that they do have many more games (better ones, too) in the pipeline.

Database?

Where else should they keep all the marketing data they’ve gathered? They’ll definitely need a decent database to really collect, organize, analyze and monetize the data they collect during this marketing campaign. Without a database, all data will be simply worthless.

It’s certainly conceivable that the entire Marketing Campaign will cost RM1.8 Million. As a matter of fact, if that’s the only amount they are going to spend to promote Malaysia, not enough.

More Targeted Visitors. More Sales

Are you looking for ways to boost up the sales of products in your online store? If you are not, than you are among the very few online store owners. Seriously, in my many dealings with online store owners, the most common problem they have is low sales number.

Well, low sales volume is really a result. In order for me to provide a solution, I need to know the cause of the problem. When I dug deeper, I discovered that the actual problem comes from the lack of targetted traffic to the online store.

Obviously, how can there be sales if your store is not attracting targeted visitors? Now that I’ve discovered the cause, I can certainly provide you with the solutions. Here are 9 ways to get targeted potential buyers to your online store and boost up your sales:

1. Discount Coupons

First of all, you will need to create discount coupons for your potential buyers. The easiest way to create these coupons is by using your online store shopping cart system. They may be different in terms and location, however, any decent shopping cart system today should have a discount coupon feature. If you are not on a proper cart system, you are out of luck. Time to move on to a shopping cart system perhaps?

If you can afford it, create a coupon with big discounts. If you are selling physical products, a discount of at least 30% should do the trick. For digital products, should go really try for at least 60% discount. Take note of the discount coupon code. You will need to distribute it in the following steps.

This is really the core of your marketing effort. It is the best way to entice your visiting prospects to buying your products once they get to your online store.

2. SMS Promotions

The best method of direct promotion would certainly be SMS messages. The message goes directly into your prospects’ SMS Inbox. Like it or not, the receiver will have to at least open up and read your SMS before deciding on what to do with it. Your message is actually read by all your prospects who received the SMS.

All you have to do is give your prospects an offer they simply cannot resists. You will have yourself a sure buyer.

Of course, you will also need to have a bulk SMS system in order to send large numbers of SMS on schedule. I don’t recommend using your own handset to do this. That will cost you time and money. With a proper Bulk SMS system, you will definitely save on time and money.

3. Email Promotions

Another method of promoting your discount coupons is by sending your promotions by email. Again, all you have to do is write a very informative email about the product or products you are promoting. At the end of the email, inform your customers/prospects about the special discount you are giving at the moment.

The thing to remember about eMail marketing is, do not use email to hardsell to your prospects. You should instead focus on giving information about the benefits and values of your products. Presell in your eMail. Leave the sales pitch on your sales page online.

Bare in mind that eMail marketing is not a one off task. You need to prepare in advance about 7 – 9 scheduled emails on your product promotions. In general it takes 5 – 7 email communications with a prospect before they are willing to buy from you. Some might even take more than 9 emails to soften their hearts to become your customer.

The use of a good eMail marketing autoresponder system like Aweber, GetResponse, Mailchimp and Auto ResponseBot is highly recommended here. Otherwise, the next best thing is to use your shopping cart’s email features.

Of course, before you could send your prospects the eMails, you should have built your mailing list before hand. Have you?

4. Blog Promotions

Do you blog? Do you blog about your business?

Blogging is certainly one of the best ways to market your online business. It’s definitely the most natural way to market your business. The effectiveness of blog marketing is probably almost similar to the traditional word of mouth marketing.

I would put blog marketing similar to word of mouth marketing because essentially the two are the same. You promote by telling a story. The only difference is in the medium. When you blog, you are marketing about your products in your own words by writing blog articles. You probably tell the same story to a friend or acquaintance whenever you speak about your business to a friend or acquaintance.

Blogging however, has a slight advantage over word of mouth in terms of its reach. If you market using your blog, your market reach is global. Not so with word of mouth. Besides, if blogging is done properly, you will get the assistance from the likes of Google, Yahoo and Bing in marketing your blogs. Cool eh?

Please do note that I recommend using a blog solely for your business marketing purpose. Do not use a blog to run your online store business.

5. Facebook Promotions

Everyone’s favorite social network. Everyday I see more more people utilizing their personal Facebook account to do business. It’s certainly good to see people putting up their business on the Net.

However, the most common violations people make on Facebook is to build a community on a personal page instead of a proper Facebook Page.

Facebook is a social network platform. Use it for it’s purpose. In this case, use Facebook to market your business to your social network. Do not build your business on Facebook. By that I mean do not use Facebook photo albums as your business catalog and the facebook wall as your business interface.

The proper way of using Facebook for your business is by creating a Facebook FanPage for your business. Put up value filled articles and notes into your FanPage. Spread the news about your business fanpage to your friends. Get them to like it.

Put up your business promotions and discount coupons on the wall of your FanPage. Tell your fans to spread the news.

If you are running a WordPress blog on your own domain and hosting, then you could install one of the many Facebook plugins for WordPress. This enables you to automatically update your Facebook everytime you update your blog.

6. Twitter Promotions

Everyone’s on Facebook. Quite a large number of them are also on Twitter. Promoting your business on Twitter is somewhat similar to promoting your business by SMS. That is in terms of the number of characters you can use in your promotion.

Just like SMS, Twitter only allows you to send 160 characters. When promoting with Twitter you need to be very precise in picking your words. Be specific. Just go straight to the point.

It would also be good if you can schedule your marketing tweets. Check out this entry in Social Times about Twitter apps that allows you to schedule your tweets.

Again, if you do run WordPress, there are plugins that allows you to Tweet your latest entry to your Twitter account. Pretty handy feature to have.

Another thing to note. You should also have a separate Twitter account for your business as well and use that to promote your business.

7. Forum Promotions

Are you a frequent forumer? Forums and Newsgroups were very much the place to be online during the years before Facebook and Twitter. Truth being, even with the popularity of FB and Twitter, today thre are still many forums thriving on the Internet.

Just go to Google and do a search for forums related to your business. Be an active forumer in the forum and add value. Once people have deemed you worthy and accepted you as their fellow forumer, you can put up your business promotions and discount coupons.

Be very careful in forums. If you go in and start promoting your business without giving value first, you will be labeled as a spammer. You might even be banned from the forum. Not good for your online business.

8. Article Marketing

Article marketing is perhaps the best way to market your business for long term traffic to your online business. As such, it is the place where you will first have to give value, lot of value before you can actually reap the benefits.

How does article marketing work? You write a series of articles about your products, business and market. Your articles must be very informative, original and interesting. At the very end of your article is an area called the author’s resource box. It’s where you can put your marketing and link back to your online business website.

Submit your article to the many article directories available. Do a search on Google to find them. However, here are two directories that I highly recommend you to use – EzineArticles and GoArticles.

9. Affiliate Program

This is truly the best and simplest way to get more sales for your online business. You don’t have to do anything. Well, not really. You do have to first create and promote your affiliate program.

It is also best if you can provide your affiliates with some form of marketing materials such as banners and email samples.

The actual marketing is really done by your affiliates for you. The more affiliates you have promoting your business, the more sales you get.

In order to run your own affiliate program, you will need to first run your online business on your own domain and hosting. So, if you are on running your business on blogspot, facebook, weebly or any other freeby sites, you are out of luck.

Gifts for Affiliate Contests

With an affiliate program, you can then run a contest for your affiliates. Give out special high value gifts to your top 3 affiliates. As an example, you can certainly run a contest that gives out ipads to the top three affiliates whose sales are more than $300,000 in a particular month. Something like that.. I hope you get it.

As with any form of businesses, you really have to work hard before you can become successful. The same law applies to your online business. If you don’t work hard in marketing your online business, chances are high for you to fail.

I’ve really just touched upon the 9 marketing methods in here. If you really want to have a successful online business, I would recommend that you master the methods above one at a time. Go through the list and focus on each one of them for a month at least. Don’t forget to monitor the results of each of them. That way you will learn which of the methods works best for your business. Then you could put more effort in marketing using the method that works best.

A 30 second summary of this blog? Hmmm… Lucky for me I don’t get on an elevator that often.

First, there are probably way too many subject matter which I’m covering in here. I’ll have to pick a core topic to focus on. At the moment, I’ve got 4 main categories – Sports, Computer Technology, Online Business and Millionaire Mindset.

Of the four, I’m more inclined towards writing about Online Business and Computer Technology. Perhaps I should just focus on the two with Millionaire Mindset as a side focus. If so, I can then turn this site into a blog on Technology, Mindset and Methodology to A Successful Online Business.

I have been using Google Apps to host a number of my domains eMail. I’m pretty sure many of you are thinking about a gmail.com eMail. Well, yes, the email interface is pretty much GMail. However, I am not talking about accounts like username@gmail.com. I’m talking about accounts like username@yourdomain.com  and it’s hosted for free by Google. Try going to mail.kodeexii.net (might not be ready until tomorrow, since I’ve just set this up today. Domain propagation takes quite a while sometimes). You will be directed to Google’s Login screen.

So, how about having your business Email hosted by Google? I sure do like Google’s interface, especially after using GMail for years. I also like the fact that I don’t have to delete emails in Google. Besides, you also get Google’s spam filtering. So, no worries about spams.

Ok, the good news, you can, if you want to, hosts all your business email for your domain, on Google. Doing so, you are given 50 email accounts. So, if you have more than 50 employees, you are out of luck. You’ll have to go for the paid version.

Now, the news that should put some pressure on you if you think you would like to use Google’s services. You have until May 10th 2011 before Google pulls out their FREE offerings for 50 users. If you want to utilize Google’s FREE services, you have got about 10 days to do so. Don’t wait any further. Go on over to Google Apps and configure your site. After May 10, Google limits their FREE services for 10 users only. Accounts created prior to May 10 will get to keep the 50 users limit.

The first thing you’ve got to do is to apply for a Google Apps Free account. At the page, you are presented with a comparison chart stating the differences between the Free and a Business account.  You decide which you would like to enroll in.

I’ll just continue showing the rest of the steps in creating your Google Apps account for your business.

You will certainly need a domain name of your own to start with. No free subdomains like username.blogspot.com or username.wordpress.com or username.webs.com please. Still haven’t registered a domain name? You can go and register yours from this domain registrar. Once you’ve got your own domain, enter it into the field just like the following image.

Once you’ve entered your domain name, you will get to fill in the rest of your personal details in a couple of upcoming pages. Just fill them as you would normally do. Once you’ve completed the personal details page, you’ll come across a page that asks you to verify your domain ownership. This is where it could get a little bit technical. It’s not too hard actually. Just follow the guide provided by Google.

There are a number of ways to verify ownership of your domain.:

1. Adding a TXT record in your DNS (If you bought your domain from GoDaddy as I recommended, Google provides a complete guide).
2. Add a Meta Tag into your domain’s home page.
3. Upload a  HTML file to your server.
4. Linking to your Google Analytics  account.

Google provides you with a complete set of guidelines to complete this verification stage. Just follow them and you should be ok. You don’t really have to do them all, just complete any one of them is good enough. However, Google do recommend that you do two types of verifications. I’d recommend you go through each of the options and do the two that is the easiest to achieve.

Domain ownership verification should take you just a few minutes, provided you do not face any problems following the guides as provided by Google.

Once you’ve got your domain verified, you can now configure the applications. The only application that requires a somewhat heavy configuration is the eMail. In configuring so that all your eMails are sent to your account in Google Apps, you will need to modify what’s called as the MX records for your domain. Once again, if you registered your domain with GoDaddy, Google provides a complete guide which you can just follow to get this done.

The change in MX records will take a while (at most 24hours) to propagate all over the Internet. As such, you will not be able to receive eMails on the Google Apps platform just yet. You can however use the eMail interface once Google Apps have completed it’s backend configuration work.  In the meantime, you should configure the other apps. They don’t require technical knowledge to configure.

Once you’ve completed configuring every other Google Apps, your eMail will probably be ready for you too. Your Google Apps Dashboard will depict something similar to the following image.

As can be seen from the image above, your default access to your Google Applications are through the google.com domain. Well, you can also configure the apps to be accessible via your own domain. As an example, you would probably want to access your eMail from a URL like mail.yourdomain.com. Well, you can configure each applications with their very own subdomains.  You can have subdomains like

• mail.kodeexii.net
• calendar.kodeexii.net
• docs.kodeexii.net
• sites.kodeexii.net

In order to configure so that you can access your Google Apps from URLs like above, you will first have to configure your domain DNS and create something that’s called CNAME records. It took me less than 5 minutes to do just that using the interface provided by my domain host.

Once you’ve created your CNAME records pointing to Google Apps’ server, you can now modify each apps settings to your desired subdomain.
