Pan Intercorp Reveals KHV In Their Distribution Chain from Japan to U.S.

Nozomi Young
Koi Show Cancellation

It is with deepest regrets that we are announcing the cancellation of the Nozomi Young Koi Show which was scheduled to be held on June
14th 2008 at Pan Intercorp
in Kenmore Washington.

We have just received word from one of our major suppliers in Japan, that Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) has been confirmed in one of their mud ponds.

Pan Intercorp is an industry leader in quarantine, testing and health management protocols, and we take the threat of KHV very seriously.

In view of our close relationship with this breeder and the large number of koi that we have from their farm, we feel that it is only prudent that we re-test all our current inventory for KHV before allowing any koi to enter or leave our Kenmore facility.

We anticipate that re-testing our current inventory from this breeder for Koi Herpes Virus antibodies will take between two to four weeks.

We understand and regret the inconvenience that this cancellation will cause to those who have made travel plans to attend the Nozomi Young Koi Show, but until we can complete the re-testing, we feel that this is the proper action to take.

Pan Intercorp

Points to Note:
-The situations that have occurred in Florida with findings of KHV were not from a domestic source. It is possible the koi found in Florida came from the same source Joel described in his letter.

-Joel notes he already tests his fish and will test them again. Is that necessary? Or is it that Pan Intercorp does random tests and not actually "tests all fish" as some might be led to believe?

-KHV positive koi are in the imported koi distribution system in the U.S. and now a potential source has been identified. How many other khv positive koi may have been distributed throughout the U.S.? If this was a health threat to people wouldn't all the points of distribution from this supplier and their customers be identified to curb the spread?

-How many further points of distribution of carriers of this disease from these incidents occur through club fish auctions, fish rescue redistributions, etc? Is real accountability even desired?

-If Joel at Pan Intercorp is or is not following all the protocols of the proposed AKCA Best Health Practices program it should have some significance as a case study in how the program can best serve the community.

Furthermore a similar point regarding transparency was made at koiphen.com a few minutes ago with:

If people wish to place their faith in the Shinkokai, etc., they are welcome to do that. I think for all the reasons stated, it is probably a reasonably safe thing to do. However, the purpose of not disclosing the breeder is to protect the industry, not the public and that should tell you something. They tell you "We promise to be vigilant and handle these things but you must accept that we will never tell you who was infected." It may be a viable way of handling this, but most people are not going to be trusting without a reasonable amount of disclosure. However, to suggest that because they are Japanese they are worthy of more trust is just silly. That sentiment is an irrational romanticizing of the Japanese culture. No culture is exempt from dishonesty and self interest, that I am aware of.
North Florida Koi Club 2007 Show Review & More!

November 21st Audio Show After another successful North Florida Koi Show their Club and Show President and Cohost of the Koi Club of the Air chats with Hawley about the event and nuances that effect participants including, how to find a bargain or your best buy on koi from a participating vendor. This isn't like buying retail where you can only purchase a koi for what is on the price tag. There is an opportunity at a koi show to haggle over price. Plus, different times during the show offer different opportunities. The best show quality fish may only be available at the beginning of the show, but there may be little or no chance for getting to negotiate the price, while on the final day of show often the dealers are motivated to sell. There is also a discussion between Todorsky and Hawley on the James Reilly's recent KOI USA article on Winter Koi. Plus, is there a cookie cutter method to koi keeping where you can for instance get a Koi Keeping for Dummies book that lays out the one lone path that one must take? What is a koi philosophy and do you have one? These are some of the topics discussed in this edition of the Koi Club of the Air.
Not to be outdone, The Real Estalker is reporting that drummer Tommy Lee just bought a six-bedroom, nine-thousand square foot home in Calabasas, California for 6.75-million dollars. Listing information states the home boasts a three-thousand square foot underground garage for 12 cars, a three-story atrium with koi pond and spa, indoor gardens including one with a retractable roof, a full gym, a professional movie theater, two kitchens and a piano shaped pebble-tech pool with a "party spa for 10." You can check out some pictures of Tommy's new digs at RealEStalker.BlogSpot.com.
Quality Koi Company Story in Fortune Small Business

Breeding a $5,000 fish
How I turned my hobby of raising koi into a successful business
FORTUNE Small Business Magazine
By Joseph Zuritsky, Owner, Quality Koi Co.
August 27 2007: 8:23 AM EDT

Penns Grove, N.J. (FSB Magazine) -- I am the CEO of Parkway Corp., a Philadelphia company that operates 100 parking facilities in the U.S. My second business, breeding koi, started as a hobby. I bought about 40, to study what makes these beautiful fish so valuable. What is the best body shape? Is that brilliant red pattern going to disappear in six months, leaving the customer with an inferior fish? Many dealers base a koi's price on what it looks like today. We grade them according to what they'll look like over the years.

I launched this operation in southern New Jersey in 2002. Most U.S. koi breeders sell to the mass market; I saw an opportunity to breed better-quality fish for serious hobbyists. Most U.S. dealers fly to Japan and buy everything but tategoi, the highest-quality koi. They are too expensive. A five-inch fish, which will live about 50 years, costs more than $1,400 wholesale.

At Quality Koi (qualitykoi.com) we sell that same fish for less than $1,000. We breed 40 types of koi and sell 20,000 to 30,000 fish a year, 90% of which we sell wholesale to dealers. Their customers are hobbyists, who pay $15 to $5,000 a fish. Some have won prizes in fish shows against Japanese competitors. I've invested more in the farm than I ever thought I would. We expect to turn an operating profit at the end of this year, with revenues exceeding $500,000.

We've had many surprises. Four years ago thousands of fish disappeared in one day. We tested the water and found nothing wrong. A Japanese consultant visited and told us, "You have to walk the ponds." With each step, you release methane trapped beneath the clay bottom. Unless you release the gas regularly, it can erupt with such force that it disintegrates the fish. After five years we're still learning how to run the farm. - As told to Caroline Tiger
Swim/Ponds by Mick Hilleary Discussion, Natural Koi Foods Comparative Benefits, and Koi Growth

July 13 Audio Show Mick Hilleary, owner of TotalHabitat.com took questions and explained the mechanics and philosophy behind his pool and watergarden combinations of typically 40,000 gallons wherein he recommends owners swim with their koi and other fish. Sound unusual? Not so. Regulations are popping up around the country to regulate water gardens and koi ponds like swimming pools. Yet, this is not Hilleary's concern as a producer of systems that he believes people will enjoy and without threat to human health. A recent study that demonstrated high protein processed koi food produces more deformities than chicken manure and cow dung from the Journal of Applied Ichthyology, Volume 23, Number 1, February 2007 , pp. 87-92 was discussed. The abstract is listed amongst the archives in the Koi News Network. Plus, a discussion of a recent MAKC magazine article detailing considerations in koi growth were discussed.

Australian Officials Study Plan to Release KHV to Control Carp

Researchers at CSIRO Livestock Industries’ Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) in Geelong are researching Koi Herpes Virus as a favorable biological control to release in their environment to destroy carp. Of course this is a disease that causes mass mortality in koi and with efforts being spent by organizations such as AKCA's Project KHV releasing more of this disease into the environment could be seen as counter productive.
After contacting Project leader Dr Mark Crane to determine if they were continuing to study this issue after initial release of the news of this study last year Crane wrote, "The short answer is - Yes, we are undertaking some research to assist with determining the feasibility of using KHV as a biological control agent for carp in Australia. FYI, I have attached the media release that went out previously."
There are those that disagree with any such proposal, but believe such actions are to be expected. "I have often wondered if a government agency would do that," Mike Robinson, owner of Keystone Hatcheries wrote. "However, I thought it would be the US, not Australia! I perfectly understand why they would want to try to do it because in addition to being a Koi farmer, I am also a biologist that deals with restoration of the native aquatic environment. However, I really believe that the plan is foolhardy, because some Koi will most certainly survive and develop resistance to the disease. And what about Asia & Europe? If Australia engineers the disease to be particularly deadly and it somehow (it would eventually) got to where the carp is native, it would be devastating to the region."

Maine Makes Exception & Allows One Man's Ownership of Koi

Cuong Ly, owner of the China Rose restaurant in Freeport, Maine, as many regular listeners of the Koi Club of the Air know, had his koi confiscated last year from an aquarium in his restaurant where they had resided without incident for 15 years. It has been illegal to trade in or possess koi in the state of Maine for several years now due to the lobbying efforts of those seeking to protect native brook trout fisheries. Ly became embroiled in a legal battle to have his fish returned from a Portsmouth, New Hampshire pet shop where officials sent them in an effort to remove their perceived threat.
Hundreds of news accounts laid out the position of the state and that of this average citizen who loves his fish that he believes bring him good luck. In October 2006 Maine officials under tremendous pressure for public perceptions that they had overreacted proposed a settlement with Cuong Ly. They would provide him a permit to purchase his fish back if he agreed to implant them with microchips for tracking purposes, get regular tank inspections, report if any died, and prevent the public from viewing the koi. Ly protested those conditions and then in late February 2007 the state of Maine gave up their legal battle (and untold amounts of state legal expenses), issued Ly a permit and authorized him to return his fish from New Hampshire to the China Rose restaurant. After an estimated $20,000 in legal expenses and $750 paid to the pet store for holding is fish Cuong Ly can smile and enjoy his small collection of koi once more.
Although this was a victory for Ly the Maine legislature is considering numerous other pieces of legislation that would tighten controls on species like koi. And as Ken Cox, coauthor of Fishes of Vermont and fisheries biologist for the Vermont Department of Natural Resources informed KCOTA “Vermont state regulation Title 10 § 4605 (Placing fish in waters; fish importation permits) states: “(a) A person shall not introduce or attempt to introduce: (2) any fish, except trout or salmon, into any waters except private ponds lacking access to other waters of the state (emphasis added).” Unfortunately, many pond owners are not informed of this regulation, or perhaps in some instances elect to ignore it, and release koi into their pond. With few exceptions these ponds were constructed with outflows that discharge to public waters providing the opportunity for koi, especially their young progeny, to escape from the pond and potentially obtain access to public lakes, ponds, large rivers and wetland habitats, where their presence is of concern to this agency. As an exotic species with the potential of altering aquatic habitats and fish communities, the expansion of the species presence in the state is not wanted.
Koi hobbyists would be wise to consider the potential impacts of their actions and existing and new regulations on the hobby.

February 23 Show Dr. Allen Riggs, state veterinarian for the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, who like Masser is a graduate of Texas A&M (aquaculture must be in the water ) and other fine institutions shares with listeners changes he has seen over the years in the hobby. Riggs also promotes a few proper koi husbandry techniques, and explains how the layers of regulations on the state, national, and international level impact the hobby and industry. The derivation of his infamous semi-scientific fish vet prognosis "ADR" is also explained along with the nature of his activity as the Hawaii state veterinarian.
Then, Buddhist Monk Kusala, a Los Angeles Police Chaplain chats with us about his experience as the sanctuary koi keeper. Rev. Kusala addresses the benefits of the hobby on one's life and how the pond is a magnet of solace amongst all the concrete and glass that surrounds a community with many troubled lives intermingled with serenity prompted by this Urban Dharma around the koi pond.

Guest Michael Masser, president of the World Aquaculture Society

Feb. 10 Show Dr. Michael P. Masser, Ph.D., Professor and Extension Fisheries Specialist Texas A&M University and President of the World Aquaculture Society joined us in the first show of the month.
We discussed the World Aquaculture Society Sustainable Aquaculture Conference held in San Antonio on Feb. 27- March 2 along with the relationship of aquaculture to the koi hobby. Dr. Masser is a friend of the koi and water garden community having spoken before numerous clubs, written extensively on the subject and provided valuable advice to hobbyists and professionals alike.
The subject of sustainable aquaculture relates to how breeder facilities are maintained for instance using a set of best management practices to reduce water consumption and wastewater production in an effort to self regulate versus having regulations imposed on the industry by government. The same consideration to sustainability can be applied to hobbyists.

Do Wet & Dry Pets Mix?
Todo led a discussion on some of the concerns that dogs for instance can pose for the koi and pond including introduction of chemicals from the lawn and even damage to the pond itself balanced against the joyful coexistence that we so often enjoy with the union of our wet and dry pets. Do you have any special stories about your dogs interacting with your koi? Email Todo with your tales of wet & dry pet interactions at pondfish@bellsouth.net.

Zoonoses Are Nothing To Sneeze At
Did you know there are diseases, called zoonoses that effect not only fish, but can infect you as a hobbyist? Hobbyists are particularly vulnerable if they have a compromised immune system and where infection occurs via contact with open wounds. Several years ago it was reported that a koi dealer’s father passed away after becoming infected in such an incident.
The pond fish need not show signs of illness for the zoonoses to be present on them or in the water the hobbyist comes in contact with. Bacteria Aeromonas and Pseudomonas are the primary zoonoses culprits followed by Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Erysipelothrix, and Mycobacterium. Aeromonas is the most common pathway for sickness in the fish and hobbyist. However, zoonoses can likewise be a parasite that infects the hobbyist either externally or internally.
The best means to avoid ever suffering from such infections is to wash thoroughly after coming into contact with the fish, pond water or associated equipment. Antibiotic treatments are available in rare cases of infection, but prevention is the best policy.
Koi Show Programs, Fish Surgery, & Proper Quarantine Size Interviews

January 24 Show (57mgs) with John Flowers of the Rocky Mountain Koi Club describing the benefits of the show software he developed and is available to run at your show. Sonja Kahkola joins us to review the story of Topper the fish she and husband Ken operated on to remove a tumor and the benefits of the 3200 gallon quarantine tank they built to accompany their 17,000 pond. Plus, the hosts discuss increases in sales of high quality expensive koi food and what to look out for when purchasing koi food. There is also a discussion on the divergent interests of breeders to produce and sell as many fish as possible of varying quality while providing offspring of improved bloodlines to high end hobbyists. Should dealers as one recently suggested he does interview potential purchasers asking about pond conditions prior to the sale?
