Pictogram font Olymp80

Dedicated to the XXII summer Olympic Games. I was inspired by the icons of these games when creating font Olymp80.

Monospaced font Olymp80 for names, logotypes, titles, headers, topics etc. Font includes only uppercase letters with two alternative designs for each letter.

This is an excerpt from the official report of the Moscow Olympics:

"Sports pictographs, as we know, are pictographic drawings symbolising sports. They serve as points of reference and help overcome language barrier. Over the past few years, they have been integrated into the decoration of Olympic cities, and have been depicted in Olympic posters, commemorative medals, postage stamps, tickets, souvenirs, etc.

On the OCOG-80’s request, graduates from several art colleges took up the design of the pictographs of the insignia as the theme of their dissertations. With the help of the research institute of industrial aesthetics, the Organising Committee chose the work submitted by Nikolai Belkov, Mukhina Art School graduate from Leningrad.

The State Committee for Inventions and Discoveries under the USSR Council of Ministers recognised the new design as a production pattern. Though highly stylised, the new signs are easily comprehensible. They are smoother in outline because they are constructed at an angle of 30-60 (previously the angle was 45-90).

Another merit of the new system is that the designs can be adapted for use in four representations: direct (solid, black against a white background), reverse (solid, white against a black background), contour (black contour against a white background), and reverse-contour (white contour against a black background), and permit several colour and shade and size variations."

Preview of the Final Result

Step 1 - Create a New Document
Choose File > New (Ctrl/Command + N). This picture size is 1920px (width) X 1080px (height). You can use any picture size that you wish.

Step 2 – Color for Background
Use a color for background, which you prefer. Select Eyedropper Tool. Click on your color. In our example select color Pure Cyan.

Step 3 – Fill Background
Choose Menu > Edit > Fill (Shift + F5). Press Enter or click OK button.

Step 4 – Color for Text
Use a color for text, which you prefer. Select Eyedropper Tool. Click on your color. In our example select color 50% Grey.

Step 5 - Adding Text
Type the any text. On picture text from comedy Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare. Select the font TypeTileDemo ( You can get this free type from this link: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/konst-ru/type-tile/ ) > Font size = 400 pt. You can decide which font size works best for your image.

Step 6 – Change Characters Option
Click on Toggle the Character and Paragraph palettes.

Select all text. Double click on text layer.

Change (Auto) in Set the leading on 80.

The result.

Step 7 – Fill evenly Text
Place cursor in Text on next position outside right edge of image. Press Enter. Repeat this step with each next string.

Step 8 – New layer options
Change Normal in Set the blending mode for the layer on Lighten Luminosity.

The result.

Step 9 – New Text Layer
Rename your Text layer on Actus primus. Duplicate this Text layer. Select Menu > Layer > Duplicate Layer… Rename this new layer as Actus Secundus

Select all text on this layer and press Delete. Add or type next fragment of your text. Change in Set the blending mode for the layer on Luminosity.

Step 10 – Next Text Layer
Duplicate any Text layer. Select Menu > Layer > Duplicate Layer… Rename this new layer as Actus Tertius. Select all text on this layer and press Delete. Add or type next fragment of your text. Change in Set the blending mode for the layer on Linear Light.

Step 11 – Last Text Layer
Duplicate any Text layer. Select Menu > Layer > Duplicate Layer… Rename this new layer as Actus Quartus. Select all text on this layer and press Delete. Add or type next fragment of your text. Change in Set the blending mode for the layer on Color Burn.

Step 12 – Title
Add title text Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare.

Another Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci

The famous picture Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci shows the proportions of the human body inscribed in a circle and square. This monster with four hands and four legs calling sacred awe before genius of the Great Masters. Vitruvius maked human proportions as a fundamental basis in architecture. And Leonardo da Vinci depicted this principle in ink on paper. How many ideas in this figure conceals? How many thoughts he create?

I think about a seditious thought recently. Why is it all portrayed in this form with eight limbs. Check with drawings in various search engines and could not find even an obvious candidate positions of man, which entered into a square or circle. Stop of thoughts when trying to process the picture is clear. Too great authority that it can be interpreted. The maximum that could have done - to wear man. Pants, shorts, jacket, etc.

Some researchers argue that the painting by William Blake “Glad Day” is one of the first references to Vitruvian Man in the art. Characteristically, the man pictured outside symmetrical rules. On the left, I picked this picture of the position corresponding to the picture of Leonardo. If you find a product of the eye in which there are allusions to Vitruvian Man - write in comments.

Next, I give the rest a combination of items Vitruvian Man. There are sixteen (16). Each limb has two positions: one for the circle and another for the square. In order not to mess together, I had a system of marking the positions of each limb counter-clockwise, starting from the head. That is, the right hand up (in circle) - Position 1, at the bottom (in square) - Position 2. And so on.

So a set of four figures. Named all the files the numbers of combinations of positions. In my opinion - is convenient.
