Kelly: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work closely with Steve Jobs or name a product so brilliantly that it’s etched forever in the pages of history. Well I was, and that’s why I had to bring my dear friend Ken Segall on WTR radio.

Ken Segall worked closely with Steve Jobs at Apple. Ken is that guy we can thank for coming up with the name iMac, and the rest my friends is naming history. That cute little “i” became the foundation for naming all the other Apple products that followed.

We also chat about marketing ideas, and Ken says just “be yourself” I love it! How many times in a day do we worry and agonize about how we’re perceived, but if we just get out of our own way, then magic starts to happen!

Ken talks to moi at KoPoint, about his behind closed meetings with Steve Jobs and shares some awesome insights on his marketing strategies in Insanely Simple.

But, I also believe that you should stand behind whatever you say. In today's world where anyone can hide behind their keyboard and screen, it feels to me that the Internet is making too many people soft. If they get challenged in the littlest ways they back down, run away or try to pretend that it never happened. THAT is what is discussed on this episode of Managing the Gray. A bit of a rant, laced with encouragement to not be soft and to stand up for what you believe in.

Last week, a travel writer was kicked off a United Airlines flight for taking a photo of his seat. Beyond the dumb decision this was by the flight crew, it got me thinking about how there are still so many people who haven't realized we live in an always on society.

Each of us is now a publisher. We have the power to create any media we want and publish it to the world in our pockets at all times and we all need to be more aware of this.

Combine this story with renewed buzz around Google Glass and the evolving face of journalism with sites like Bold Edition, Quartz and Narratively gaining traction and no one can not pay attention to this shift.

Lindsay and Natalie Zutter met up with cosplay photographer Ejen Chuang at Kinokuniya, a fun Japanese bookstore in Manhattan’s Bryant Park. Ejen was in town for a photo exhibition sponsored by the Otaku Anime Society at Kean University promoting his book Cosplay In America. Hours before a meet-up with new friends who would show him around NYC for the day, Ejen met up with us to chat about the long road to the book.

He started the Cosplay In America project in 2009, after he had rejoined the cosplay scene as a photographer. I was in Detroit kicking off the book tour for Amazing Things Will Happen and found myself inspired to share some thoughts on the city.

This is a city that I'm quickly falling in love with the energy and vibe of.

While it may be kicked and down at the moment, there are so many people determined to pick it back up and make it better than ever. Plus, there is a strong sense of social good and helping the community on top of making a profit that you don't hear about often enough other places.

The audio quality on this is going to be not as good as usual. I'm testing out a new iPhone app called bossjock studio which allows me to record full podcasts while on the road. Next time I'll plug in an external microphone to make it sound even better.

Politics are the last thing that usually inspire me to record a podcast, but today that is exactly what made me fire up the microphone and hit record.

But, this isn’t a rant fueled political episode. Instead I wanted to encourage people to find the issues that they are passionate about and fight for them. It is our duty to be educated on what is going on around us and be vocal about anything we believe in.

I mentioned my recent post about the foreign aid and how it wasn’t until I learned more about it that I became vocal about it.

It is equally important also, to respect other’s beliefs and opinions and not pick a fight every time you see someone who doesn’t line up exactly like you do.

I’ve returned to an older way of creating shows. When I first started doing them, I would just start putting something together. I would decide when it was nearing completion if it had any kind of unifying theme. Usually it did. That’s when I would add the intro and outro. The whole show would seem like it was more planned than it actually was. The idea of “themes” was so successful the cart slowly passed the horse, and it evolved into a process where I would first come up with a theme and then struggle to support it with content. That made it much more difficult, and was one of the things that slowed down the frequency of releases. So I’m going to try and do them the original way. Maybe it will improve the rate at which they get done.

A few quick thoughts on the process of covering elections. - Reflection on the process. Second general election, things have changed yet I am starting to hear the same messages, and starting to see how and why partisanship works. - Personal reflection - 07 and 08 vs 2012 - I'm more centrist because real decisions are made on local level, by courts, by activist groups, and because I believe more and more in continuity of government. - Who did I vote for? Why? - Have we actually moved to a more parliamentary system, with a strong executive? - Who am I? Do I matter? Yes, meta reporting; no, because everyone can do it. Also: why listen to me? Maybe because I have some experience, but I’m still bothered by the pretense. - Does this election matter? - The process does matter? - Does tech matter? Yes. Tech has built tools that help democratize information dissemination. - How do we drill down the ballot, beyond the nominee? - Social media has matured - Peripheral exposure to news and information has lead to saturation - Is this good or bad? I think good because the process has become democratized. But in the process have all issues become more siloed, angry, and trivial? - Have we learned anything? I don't know. We've changed a lot. - Have I learned anything? Yes, I've become humbled and more neutral. - What is journalism? Who knows? Who cares. - Why do I do this? Who knows. - What does the future look like? Interview: Navy Spouse at the DNC - Downsizing the Military

This afternoon I had the opportunity to speak with Jennifer Beasley, the spouse of a Navy officer recently 'downsized.' According to Mrs. Beasley, her husband - a sailor and 12-year veteran of the Navy - was recently released from his contract not for poor performance, but as part of a larger cost-cutting initiative. Mrs. Beasley said that the downsizing negated most of his service history and benefits. The story was first reported by the Navy Times, and was recently popularized by Lisa Wexler, a Metro New York-based talk radio host. Mrs. Wexler recently wrote for The Huffington Post:

What is happening is that close to 3,000 enlisted men and women are being downsized from the navy. That's right -- downsized. Not fired due to performance, or transferred to another station. They have been given their walking papers in the middle of their stints and told to find something else to do. Go find another house, another job, another health plan. That's the thanks they get for signing on the dotted line, volunteering to sacrifice their lives for our country. That's the thanks they get for loaning their spouses out for months at a time, on duty that takes them away from the first day of kindergarten, birthdays, holidays and the day the dog died.

According to Mrs. Wexler, Mrs. Beasley and her husband are one of over three thousand military families affected by the downsizing. The families have recently established a Facebook page to filed inquiries. At press time the office of the Navy was unavailable for comment.

Every waking hour of your life is filled with audio. Whether you acknowledge it or not, your ears are constantly taking in the sounds of your environment. It’s the hum of the city, the chatter in a coffee shop, or the barking dog next door as you try to focus on your latest blog post. It’s normal to see people with headphones as you walk the streets, or enjoy that Americano in your favorite shop. If I’m one of those you see, there’s a 95% chance that a podcast is filling my ears and brain. Podcasts, to me, are a conscious choice to fill my ears with informational audio. The latest Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders podcast helps me understand how entrepreneurs think, and how the execute. The Dave Ramsey Show is an hour long daily podcast - where the meat of the show is listeners calling seeking advice. Of course there’s Leo Laporte’s TWiT network - shows filled with hours and hours of technical detail presented in a fun, roundtable format. If you love startups as I do, I’d be remiss if I failed to mention Mixergy. Whether I’m working on the laptop, driving, mowing my grass, or shopping in the grocery store, there is a podcast in my ears most of the time. When I tell this story, common feedback is that some people can’t “listen to podcasts and work.” They prefer music instead because they can “ignore” the music and still have something to fill the quiet. To each their own, though I’d encourage you to try my way. My choice is to make the background noise of my life full of useful data. Even if I’m not focused entirely on the podcast content (passive listening), my brain is able to pick out keywords in the audio stream. If something piques my interest, I’ll switch my full attention to the podcast. Then, when the time has passed, it’s back to passive listening. This works so well for my use case, that I decided in 2009 to build a podcast portal to help other people do the same thing. At Podcamp Boulder, I reserved 30 minutes to chat about the idea. It was a simple site that could help others discover podcasts. If you’re like most, there are a few shows that you listen to religiously. Outside of that, you’ll dabble with shows here and there as friends suggest them, but for the most part you’ve got your list. YourTuner (the original Callisto.fm) solved this problem by playing podcasts in streams of related shows. If you chose the “business” channel, you get podcasts from multiple creators about business. Same with travel, language, or any of the 64 other categories iTunes provides. Think Pandora for podcasts. Two and a half years later, it became pretty clear that while the media creators themselves were excited, and we had some great ones, consumers weren’t going to listen to podcasts on a website. In the next post, I’ll talk about how Callisto.fm’s analytics “feature” inspired a pivot, and how we’re taking podcast analytics to every media industry.

With news that a hacking group nabbed and posted more than 450K Yahoo Voice and email passwords here, anyone with a Yahoo account has got to be hitting that site to see if he or she was a victim. I know I did. Here’s what I saw. Updated: Yahoo has released a statement saying it is working on the breach and that other email sites, including Hotmail, are likely compromised, too. Due to high traffic on this group’s site — as you see, it calls itself the d33ds group — the page is going up and down. I caught part of it in a cut and paste. In part, it reads:
We hope that the parties responsible for managing the security of this subdomain will take this as a wake-up call … not as a threat … There have been many security holes exploited in webservers belonging to Yahoo … that have caused far greater damage than our disclosure (today). Please do not take (the posting) lightly. The subdomain and vulnerable parameters have not been posted to avoid further damage …

And if you read Wizard, you laughed at the witty retorts and letters-c0lumn banter filed each month by Jim McLauchlin. Wizard, now defunct, was the barometer of hip in the comic book industry for half a generation. If Wizard set the agenda for the comic book industry for the 1990s, Mr. McLauchlin's reports were it's narrative. And that narrative was hilarious. The former editor and senior writer also provided a much-needed sense of levity at a time of doom and gloom in the comic book industry. Upon leaving the magazine in the early 2000s, Mr. McLauchlin be went to work for Top Cow Productions, a well-known publishing entity within the Image Comics umbrella. Today, Mr. McLauchlin works closely with the Hero Initiative, a not-for-profit agency organization that acts as a "financial safety net" for comic book creators. This is what happens when you fill a small studio with too many smart and funny people, and give them alcohol. Magic happens! This was the first time we've ever had so many people in the KoPoint Studio, and didn't know what to expect, or what we'd be left with after we were done. It was a fitting bracket to 100 episodes, in that the first episode went very much the same way. We had no idea what we were doing or what we'd be left with when we were done. The takeaway is, we surely had a fun time with a group of smart and entertaining guests. Pardon the shoddy at times audio quality, and the abrupt cuts. Once again, putting 13 drinking people in a small studio causes problems. The benefit? There are a countless number of priceless laughs to be had throughout the episode. In the 1980s the space was home to early incarnations of Def Jam and served as the audio laboratory for legends like Run DMC, Nas, The Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J.
