FANTOMASSOZ ( TEMPIO de NEROZ) opens a new series of contemporary art projects connected with the activity of Il Giardino dei Lauri. The most important and acclaimed artists of the youngest international generation will create site specific works for the church.
Jonathan Meese will present a new body of work including sculptures and paintings. As he said, "I am a humble servant of art and as such am happy to be a guest at Santa Maria dei Servi".

A large painted curtain opens the show to introduce the spectators to the artist's universe. Meese decided to create a theatre stage. Four paintings representing the guardians of Art will be placed in the seventeenth century oval stucco frames. In front of the major altar three sculptures sit on a large painted pedestal; a mother-child group related to an Egyptian Isis sculpture is flanked by two sculptures of guards. Directly behind the altar, sit two smaller sculptures symbolizing a real and metaphorical path toward the new family of art, the Future.

The church of Santa Maria dei Servi opened to the public in March of 2009 and is the most ancient religious place in Citta' della Pieve. The architecture shifted throughtout its history, from a Medieval to a Baroque style. Pietro Perugino painted "The Deposition from the Cross" for the church.

FANTOMASSOZ (TEMPIO de NEROZ) takes place in conjuction with VIEW, an articulated project of contemporary art in Umbria between Citta' della Pieve, Magione and Trevi.

Jonathan Meese was born in Tokyo in 1970, lives and works in Berlin. He started his career as a painter and has extended his practice to include performance, sculpture and installation. In the last couple of years his work has been featured in important solo and group shows in private and public museums and collections such as the Guggenheim Museum and P.S.1 in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlino, the CAC in Malaga, the Caixa Foundation in Barcelona, the Kunstraum in Innsbruck, The Essl Museum in Wien, the De Appel Centre for Contemporary Art in Amsterdam, the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe, the Louisiana Museum in Copenhagen, the MAGASIN Center in Grenoble and the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, the Saatchi Gallery in London and the Thyssen Bornemisza in Wien.

Mr. Genocchio has also written on business, politics, social issues and the arts for Business Review Weekly, The Bulletin and the Sydney Morning Herald, where he began his career as an art critic. Mr. Genocchio has also served as Editor in Chief of Postwest magazine. An Australian native, he was twice shortlisted for the Pascal Prize for cultural criticism and is the author and editor of seven non-fiction books, including Dollar Dreaming, about the corruption in the Aboriginal art market; and forthcoming books -- The Cupcake (Henry Holt Publishers) about the two-decade saga to build Frank Lloyd Wright’s, Guggenheim Museum, and a second book, about the Asian contemporary art market (Random House). Mr. Genocchio has a PhD in Art History from the University of Sydney.

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation today announced that it has inaugurated the Future Generation Art Prize, a major new international competition for artists up to 35. Established to discover and provide long-term support for a generation of emerging artists, wherever they may live and work, this unique artist-focused prize aims to make a major contribution toward the production of new work by young artists.

* a distinguished Board, Jury and Selection Committee;
* an exhibition of shortlisted artists at the PinchukArtCentre in Kiev, one of the largest and most active new contemporary art institutions in Europe;
* and an award of $100,000, to be conferred by a respected international jury.

Applications for the Prize will become available online on January 18, 2010, at the competition’s website, www.futuregenerationartprize.org. The exhibition of shortlisted artists will open at the PinchukArtCentre (PAC) in October 2010. The jury will announce the winner of the main prize in December 2010, and up to five special prizes for artists who will be provided with various forms of support.

According to Victor Pinchuk, “This worldwide contemporary art prize will be an important contribution to the open participation of younger artists in the dynamic cultural development of societies in global transition.”

To encourage the assistance of one generation of artists to the next, a group of renowned Mentor Artists has committed its long-term participation in the Prize and will provide in-person counsel and support to the Prize winners, and one of the Mentor artists will have a parallel show at the same time as each shortlist exhibition. The Mentor Artists are Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami.

A distinguished international Board oversees the Future Generation Art Prize. In addition to chairman Victor Pinchuk and the four Mentor Artists, the Board’s membership includes Eli Broad, Dakis Joannou, Elton John, Miuccia Prada and art museum directors Richard Armstrong (Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum), Glenn D. Lowry (The Museum of Modern Art), Alfred Pacquement (Musée nationale d’art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou) and Sir Nicholas Serota (Tate).

Extending the reach of the Future Generation Art Prize, an invited group of approximately one hundred arts professionals from around the world will nominate artists for consideration. By combining the open application process with these nominations, PAC aspires to achieve the participation of a true global cross-section of the up-to 35 generation.

“Our first goal in establishing this Prize is to reach out to the world’s younger artists on a truly democratic basis, so that virtually everyone has the opportunity to participate,” stated Eckhard Schneider, General Director of the PinchukArtCentre. “Our second goal is to provide sustainable support for the future generation, by bringing the most promising of these young artists into a network that includes curators, critics, educators, scholars and some of the world’s most celebrated artists.”

Speaking of his participation in the Prize, Takashi Murakami stated, “The last several years made the rising of the young generation of Japanese artists possible. This new prize wants to make this rise happen in Ukraine and the rest of the world, because now the world is expanding and at the same time shrinking. I am very happy to join this project and hopefully this prize will become every year bigger and bigger, and famous and famous-er."

Explaining his support for the Prize, Damien Hirst said, “I think art needs to be encouraged. Art prizes are really important. All children draw and paint and for some reason a lot of them stop. In the beginning they all paint—even the bank managers, accountants and the lawyers. To encourage art is a great thing.”

The launch of the Future Generation Art Prize follows the inaugural year of the PAC’s prize competition for Ukrainian artists up to the age of 35. An exhibition of the 20 shortlisted artists for this prize is on view at the PAC from October 31 through December 20, 2010.

Timeline of the Prize

Artists may submit applications at www.futuregenerationartprize.org from January 18 through April 18, 2010. Toward the beginning of this application period, PAC will announce the names of the international jury for the Prize.

Following the close of applications, an expert Selection Committee comprised of members chosen by the jury will review all applications and decide on a shortlist of as many as twenty artists, whose names will be announced on June 22, 2010. These artists will participate in the Prize exhibition by showing the existing works they highlighted in their applications and may also create new works specifically for the PAC galleries. The winner of the national PinchukArtCentre Prize also will participate, bringing the maximum number of artists in the exhibition to 21.

After the exhibition has been on view for two months, the international jury will gather in Kiev in December 2010 to view and discuss the artists’ works. The jury will select one main Prize winner, who will receive a total of $100,000 ($60,000 as a cash award, and $40,000 toward the production of new work). An additional $20,000 will be allotted to fund artist-in-residency programs for up to five other special prize winners. Images of works by all the shortlisted artists will be posted on the PAC website, and members of the public will be invited to vote via the Internet for People’s Choice Prize.

Following the inaugural year, the Future Generation Art Prize will be awarded on a biennial cycle.

Jompet | Java's Machine: Phantasmagoria
Java's Machine: Phantasmagoria explores syncretism as a strategy to reconcile dispersed and disparate points of reference in Javanese cultural history. This is exemplified by Java, the War of Ghosts, the centrepiece installation, which also underscores the other works in the exhibition. Java, the War of Ghosts features 'invisible' soldiers made flesh by their uniforms-amalgams of the Dutch and Javanese military attire-and equipment. Suspended from the ceiling, each plays a different sound, synchronised into an electronic orchestra. A discordant yet strangely harmonious combination, the installation is a representation of Java's patchwork heritage. Jompet's soldiers do not serve a military function; they stand in formation, aloof, rather than tangled in battle. They are literally held down by the very things that constitute them, the sheer bulk of a civilisational parade. However, this is not intended as a criticism. Jompet's syncretism can be read as a discourse on post-colonialism and globalisation, a celebration of unruly beauty. As with Java's heritage, harmony can be negotiated in the multiplicity of patches that make up today's global community.

Louie Cordero | Soft Death
Dismemberment, mutilation, brain, blood, intestines, membranes, capillary... these are imageries abundant in the works of Louie Cordero. Yet more than just gore and the grotesque, Cordero's works, which draw inspirations from the streets, idiosyncratic semiology of various subcultures, popular culture, myths, and mass media, is reflective of a contemporary fascination with both the refined and the lewd. In Soft Death, which showcases a series of new drawings and paintings, ornate savagery appears alongside jovial or otherwise indifferent characters, often critically wounded or in a state of physical distortion-perhaps hinting at the contradiction underlying contemporary culture. Repulsive yet strangely captivating, Cordero's works are an ingenious manipulation of the sick pleasure one derives from the abject, and a direct confrontation with contemporary society.

From December 3 through 6, 2009, Miami Beach, Florida, will be home to the 8th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, the international art show. Made up of 7,107 islands, the Philippines is known for its stunning natural beauty and its people - warm, resilient and synonymous with the People Power movement. Land of the Morning: The Philippines and its People explores the identity of the Filipino people, created by the blending of indigenous local cultures and foreign influences.

More than 300 years of Spanish colonial rule is most visible in the religion, language, architecture, art and food of the Philippines. Today, the Philippines has the largest Catholic population in Asia. Muslim communities in the south, indigenous highland communities and the influence of Chinese migrants add to the picture of cultural diversity that is the Philippines.

This unprecedented exhibition at the Asian Civilisations Museum features more than 290 rare and important artefacts - ancient gold, Catholic imagery, tribal artefacts and contemporary Filipino artworks – from museums and private collections in the Philippines, some of which will be on display for the very first time.

This exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Ayala Museum, Manila.

Agus Sumiantara and Dodit Artawan are indonesian contemporary artists, members of Taxu Art Clinic, who are managed by SIGIarts. I met them at SIGIarts booth this afternoon at ARTSingapore 2009. Since I don't have the images of the artworks exhibited at the fair, pardon me if I plucked a sample of their work from their last exhibits here.

Takashi Murakami to exhibit in Versailles in 2010

During an event to promote the launch of French pop artist Xavier Veilhan show at Château de Versailles, the Versailles museum director Jean-Jacques Aillagon announced that Takashi Murakami had been chosen to appear at the Palace of Versailles in 2010.

Jane Lee @ Osage Singapore

Osage Singapore is pleased to present the first major solo exhibition of Jane Lee's work since being awarded the Singapore Art Prize for her work at the Singapore Art Show in 2007. From Lee's investigations into processes of painting and materiality through to her recent large-scale installation presented at Singapore Biennale 2008, the exhibition offers audiences a rare opportunity to follow the development of her artistic practice from 2004 to the present day.

Lee's work examines painting by pushing the limits of the materials and techniques used in painting. Through her use of unconventional materials and innovative techniques, her paintings highlight their processes to draw attention to the way the paintings have been made or constructed, and in so doing re-examine painting's significance and relevance for contemporary art practice.
