App Design

Auto Pal is an app designed to deal with cars, whether that be diagnosing an issue, buying parts, or finding a mechanic. The main inspirations for this design was Ada, a medical app, along with Twitter and Instagram, for the icons at the bottom of the screen. I daily drive an older car, so an app that could help me diagnose issues would be very helpful for me, along with others who drive often.

Mechanical

The goal of this assignment was to create a working mechanical for use in print. We first started with positioning of the photo, then, creating a new overlay, we positioned the type. For the last overlay, we created a marker composition of the underneath photo, portraying the colors as accurately as possible. The side instructions are examples of what the printer would receive in order to print this photo accurately.

Army Navy Club Signage

This assignment was to create a new sign design for the Army Navy Club, an organization that is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Requirements from the client were to keep it close to the same size as the existing sign, along with being more inclusive of other branches of the military. I found that the best way to do this was to propose a name change. Since a name change is a big leap for an organization that has stayed the same for nearly 100 years, I decided to not change the original design of the sign much. That way, the change would be less jarring for the owners and the patrons. The two names I chose to go with were the Armed Forces Club and the Military Club. both would show more inclusivity to other branches ,while keeping the sign easy to read and understand if one were to drive or walk by it.

Infographic Project

For this project, we were told to include a photographic or representative image of ourselves, an element that represents the brain, and text. For the image of ourselves, I traced over a photo of myself, simplifying it in areas such as the nose, and adding some differing line weight. For the element that represents the brain, I decided to depict nerve endings. This design is an illustrative representation of a photo that I found of nerve endings online. The text portion of this assignment was completed by putting words that relate to me, my habits, and my interests along pieces of the nerve endings. For the text in the black box, I used a white gel pen. I cleaned up the blobby shapes the gel pen left my using a fine point black pen. The black text simply used only a fine point black pen. Some design principles in use in this piece include contrast, asymmetrical balance, and figure ground.

These 5 photos are assignments from my image graphics class at my high school. The first photo are 2 pin designs that I came up with. The first pin uses a flower background, and has diamond shapes over it, which were created using a shape tool in photoshop. The second pin combines two images. The background of the second pin was changed from white to a cream color using the selection tools and paint bucket in photoshop. The second picture was from a logo design project. The fictional company I created was Forward Horizons, an aerospace company. This particular logo is a combination mark, featuring the name of the company in a futuristic font, and an arrow that doubles as a rocket. This arrow rocket shows how the company deals with space travel, and moves forward.

The next photo in the center is a package design that was created using a collaborative effort between myself and three other classmates. The name, slogan, and story were done completely as a group, but the design of the label itself was entirely my own. The goal of this assignment was to create an energy drink label that included a logo, the ingredients and nutrition facts. We chose as a group to aim for something that was marketed as heathy, and each of us came up with separate designs using those requirements. Some things I did to make this energy drink look heathy, yet energetic was to choose neon greens and blues have a leaf pattern in the front, along with a leaf icon that is more visible. Overall, I am very happy with this design, and think it is still comparable to my more recent work.

The next image, located at the bottom left, is a photo mosaic. We were required to have a certain number of photos in a space, along with a background photo. I chose to represent one of favorite shows, Star Trek's Deep Space Nine. I took stills and promotional photos for the mosaic aspect, and ended up duplicating the number of photos to create the mosaic affect better. We then either applied a blend mode to the mosaic layer, or simply lowered the opacity on it. The final image was a logo design for a graphic design firm. This assignment was another part of the energy drink project, and its goal was to create a logo for the class group. This part of the assignment was more collaborative, and included more input from the four of us. We wanted to create a minimalistic logo, thus we went with two simple circle shapes with a gradient through them.

Overall I am quite happy with my work from this class, as it helped pave the way towards my interest and hopeful career in graphic design in the future.

Kristina Paggioli is a student at MCC and is working towards getting her Associates in Graphic Design. She has been doing artwork as soon as she was able to hold a writing utensil, and got quite far with her work, some of it being considered in the Scholastics Art Awards when she was in High School. Kristina took her first Graphic Design Course in her junior year of High School, and took the second part of that course her senior year. After completing these courses and enjoying them, she realized that Graphic Design could be a career path for her. After taking Computer Graphics her first semester at MCC, she decided to continue Graphic Design as a career path.
