Three sided diplays coming from samsung

2013-11-16T06:08:00.000-08:00

Samsung revealed its roadmap for its future products at the Analyst Day 2013 earlier this year. The roamap revealed that Samsung would launch bendable and foldable displays in future after the launch of Galaxy Round with a curved display. Now Bloomberg reports that new Galaxy smartphone coming next year with a display that wraps around the edges. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) filing that Samsung filed earlier this week shows a device that wraps around frontward and provides extra display space on its sides.

The patent image shows side displays with icons for music player, ebooks and more serving these functions and the front-most display used for primary activity.

The phone will reportedly be using an upgraded version of Youm display technology from Samsung. This would let each side of the display operate independently. These details are yet to be confirmed by Samsung. The new display might be used on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S or Note series. We might also see this in a complete new series.

Samsung Galaxy smartphone with three-sided wraparound display is expected to release second half of 2014.

Google is receiving two of Fastcodesign’s awards

2013-10-04T10:10:00.000-07:00

Google has undergone a remarkable transformation - from a quick search engine with non-existent design to suddenly a company that is in the fore-front of design trends. The change happened when Larry Page took over and gathered all Google designers together under one roof to decide on the new ‘One Google’ strategy. And it paid off.

This year, Google is receiving two of Fastcodesign’s awards. One for interactive design and a special award for the design of Google Glass, the company’s yet unreleased but upcoming wearable computer.

The interactive design award went to Google Maps for iPhone, an application that was eagerly anticipated after the Apple Maps screw-up. It came and it shocked - not for its functionality that everyone knew would be there, but for its design that was intuitive, clean, gesture-based and modern. Who would’ve expected this of Google just a couple of years ago?!

Google Glass got awarded a special prize since it’s still just a bold beta, but it’s stylish and futuristic, and most people who’ve had a chance to wear Glass would tell it attracts a lot of eyeballs.

Dual boot For android running windows phone

2013-10-04T10:06:00.000-07:00

Microsoft is apparently trying to push HTC, one of the major Android OEMs, to make Windows Phone run on its Android Phones
HTC engineers are already looking at providing Dual Boot options of Windows Phone and Android for its upcoming devices. This is a surprising turn of events for the software giant, as the company has long stood by its licensing model that doesn’t allow this option of dual boot, but things may be changing fast, as the strategy is rapidly moving towards “Devices and Services”, especially with the announcement of a Nokia acquisition.

For those who don't recall, HTC manufactured the first smartphone powered by Android. It’s hard to see how HTC is reporting a $101 million operating loss in Q3 of 2013, all thanks to Samsung’s dominance of the Android market.

HTC hasn't made a Windows Phone device since July of this year and has yet to unveil any plans to offer a new Windows Phone device. Sprint recently announced the availability of the carrier's very first Windows Phone 8 device, the HTC 8XT.

Many people have supported the idea of making Windows Phone for free for all Windows Phone manufacturers. After the recent acquisition of Nokia, people have been busy expressing their opinions on forums and articles, and one that came up mostly was making the licensing for Windows Phone free for other Windows Phone manufacturers.

With Nokia having 90% market share of Windows Phones, it wouldn’t hurt Microsoft if they make it free for the other manufacturers who have 10% market share. In fact, I think Microsoft will have the advantage in making Windows Phone for free since devices will be cheaper, probably better, and therefore benefit Windows Phone in the long-run.

Windows Phone commands just a 3.7 percent share of the smartphone market, which Microsoft will be looking to increase through its recent agreement to purchase partner Nokia's smartphone division. Similarly, HTC has been struggling to compete against Korean rival Samsung, which dominates the Android handset space. If the two were to co-operate on a phone that dual-boots between Android and Windows, it'd certainly be one of the most unusual smartphone software pairings we've seen in some time.

nokia patents new imaging technology

2013-10-01T22:37:00.001-07:00

If you've ever used any high-end Lumia handset from Nokia, you'd be well familiar with how much engineering ingenuity and mastery is poured into ever camera lens. From the Lumia 920's impressive optical image stabilization system, to the Lumia 925's sixth element lens, and the Lumia 1020's 41-megapixel lens, Nokia has established itself as a leader in imaging. But there's always room for improvement, and a recent patent filing shows that Nokia aims to eliminate a common problem found in photos taken with an optically-stabilized lens.

The issue is called lens shading, which could result in photos that, "may be brighter in the sensor and decrease in brightness when approaching the edges of the sensor array", according to Nokia's filing. From what we understand from the description, the problem lies in the nature of OIS systems itself — when the whole lens is moving and compensating for motion, the resulting image may be slightly obscured due to internal components getting in the way.

Their proposed solution? To capture two images at a time, first with OIS disabled and second with OIS enabled. Then software compares the two images and corrects any possible discrepancies between them for a shot with uniform brightness

This patent was originally filed back in 2010, a lifetime ago for the company, but with their recent innovations with OIS and imaging ,we can see this process in action sooner rather than later.

Board pushing Bill Gates to step Down

2013-10-01T22:30:00.003-07:00

Bill Gates, who was co-founded the company known by the name of Microsoft about 38 years ago. Since his departure from the role of CEO in 2000, another founding member Steve Ballmer has been the CEO leading the company every day for the past 13 years. Gates has still been an instrumental leader of Microsoft, serving as Chairman on the company's board. But with Ballmer on the way out, is it also time for Gates to sever ties with Microsoft once and for all?

The "three of [Microsoft's] top 20 investors" are positing to the company's board. This is definitely a rare moment in the company's history when investors have shown any kind of discomfort with Gates in a leadership role, since Ballmer has often been criticized as the sole reason for Microsoft's lack of innovation and competitive foresight during his tenure.

Gates currently holds a 4.5% stake in the company which is the largest share of any individual. But the three investors collectively hold a 5% stake, which at the very least gives them some say in how the company should address Gates' presence on the board.

Microsoft is still one of the world's most valuable technology companies, making a net profit of $22 billion last fiscal year. But its core Windows computing operating system, and to a lesser extent the Office software suite, are under pressure from the decline in personal computers as smartphones and tablets grow more popular.

what is ocr thats coming for skydrive....

2013-09-30T19:57:00.002-07:00

The OCR feature in SkyDrive, which is powered by Bing, is now being rolled out to users over the next few weeks. It recognizes text which may have been taken in a photo and stores it in the metadata.

This feature, which is rolling out over the coming weeks, allows you to search from the desktop for the content of Camera Roll photos that have had text extracted from them.

For example, you might have taken a photo 6 months ago of the menu of your favorite restaurant, but can’t remember where it’s buried in your Camera Roll and want to remember the dish you had. You can simply type in the restaurant name on your desktop and Bing Smart Search will search text of your Camera Roll photos and pull up the picture of the menu with the restaurant name printed on it. With the power of smart files, this will work even if your Camera Roll is marked for online-only access. The moment you open the photo, it will be instantaneously pulled from the cloud for you to view the full version.

unified wp store and windows 8 store

2013-09-26T13:24:00.001-07:00

One of the major downsides within the Microsoft ecosystem is the inability to share applications between Windows Phone devices and Windows 8/RT tablets. Rumors had emerged in the past that the company might be looking for a way to merge the two stores and create a one-stop solution for users; today, those rumors have been confirmed.

According to The Verge, Microsoft is planning to combine its current Windows Phone Store and Windows 8 Store into one single entity. Sources have stated that head of Microsoft’s Operating Systems Group, Terry Myerson, confirmed the decision to merge the stores “in an internal company meeting today”, which was “attended by thousands of Microsoft employees”.

As of now, the Windows Store and Windows Phone Marketplace are the Achilles Heel of Microsoft’s entrance into the industry and combining the two marketplaces can only be helpful. In addition, if users find out that all of the Windows 8 applications they bought can easily be accessed from their phone – it might draw more appeal to Windows phone handsets.

Firefox OS phone

2013-09-26T13:19:00.001-07:00

ZTE planning bigger, better Firefox OS phone for US release next year

ZTE is one of the few companies making a sly side-bet on Firefox OS, and next year it's planning to double-down on that initial wager with the launch of a second handset running Mozilla's smartphone platform. Speaking with IDG's Michael Kan at Expo Comm China 2013, ZTE's Executive VP He Shiyou expects the device to land first half 2014, with a larger display than its predecessor, a dual-core processor, a "revamped user experience" and, of course, a low price tag. The exec also said that, with approximately 100,000 units sold, demand for the ZTE Open "has exceeded supply," and he anticipates double that figure in total sales. ZTE deliberately manufactured the Open on a small scale, but is optimistic about future adoption of Firefox OS. Shiyou believes HTML5-based apps will become more relevant as speedy network technology like LTE reduces reliance on native software, stating: "In the future, the app store business model will be no more."

Google Glass Helps Surgeons In Rural India

2013-09-25T06:55:00.000-07:00

J.S. Rajkumar, a tech-savvy laparoscopic surgeon at the Lifeline Multi Speciality Hospital in the southern city of Chennai, on Tuesday carried out two operations wearing Glass, which uses a tiny, voice-controlled, Wi-Fi-enabled computer on the face.

“As you operate you can webcast to three or four senior surgeons sitting in Chennai, Delhi or Hyderabad and we would be able guide those rural surgeons,” Mr. Rajkumar said. “It’s implications are huge,” he added.

Google Glass allows images to be projected inside a small, transparent cuboid over the right eye, meant to look like a 25-inch screen eight feet away, reducing obstruction for the wearer.

According to the surgeon who is also chairman of the Lifeline Group of Hospitals, 'the rural hospitals in India should adopt Glass as it is cost-effective and will make interactions with technology less disruptive, unlike a regular computer. All we need is connectivity'.

Mr. Rajkumar wore the glasses to perform a minimally invasive and open gastro intestinal surgery on two patients, one suffering from heartburn and acid reflux, the other from a hernia.

The surgeries were recorded through a lens on the headset and streamed live through Google Hangout, an interactive video platform, to an audience of 30 surgeons and medical students watching from a few blocks away at the hospital’s corporate office.

He said that Glass, which has yet to hit the world-wide commercial market, could work wonders in India, where 85% of all surgeries happen in villages and small towns and doctors often need expert guidance to perform complex and emergency procedures.
