A report by the Island Press Urban Resilience Project offers a framework for thinking about how U.S. cities can thrive in turbulent times brought on by the impacts of climate change.

The report, “Bounce Forward: Urban Resilience in the Era of Climate Change,” is part of a wide-ranging effort to imagine and inspire the sustainable, equitable, climate-resilient cities of the future.

The Movement Strategy Center in Oakland, Calif., recently completed a report titled "Pathways to Resilience: Transforming Cities in a Changing Climate."

The report captures the thinking from an effort called the P2R Dialogues that led to a vision of climate resilience grounded in the realities of low-income communities and communities of color, as well as pragmatic pathways to achieve it.

Community-based nonprofits in 10 states will get help with climate-resilience planning, policy development and implementation efforts to advance the priorities and needs of low-income people.

Seventeen nonprofits will receive grants through The Kresge Foundation’s Climate Resilience and Urban Opportunity Initiative. Launched this past summer, the initiative attracted more than 230 nonprofits seeking planning grants.

The organizations selected from that field will each receive $100,000. They are:

Kresge’s Environment Program team received more than 230 responses to a call for statements of qualification from organizations interested in a new climate resilience initiative. This is the first step in a process that will result in the award of up to 20 grants this year.

In its report “Preparing for Climate Impacts: Lessons from the Front Lines,” the Georgetown Climate Center concludes that most communities are not prepared for the threats they face under existing climate conditions, let alone a radically different future.

The nonpartisan organization based at Georgetown University Law Center works with state and local policymakers, resource managers and the public on legislation, model policies and strategies to help communities adapt to hotter summers, rising sea levels, flooding and extreme weather.

The mayors from 10 major U.S. cities today announced they will undertake a united effort to boost energy efficiency in the buildings in their communities.

The move could cut as much climate change pollution as generated by 1 million to 1.5 million passenger vehicles every year and lower energy bills by nearly $1 billion annually.
