I’ve been having fun painting plates and things. It’s really satisfying when it’s going well and extremely frustrating when your brush strokes go wobbly and you spend twice as much time wiping paint off than putting it on. The paint promises permanence and dishwasherability, so these could be used for eating and everything. I probably should test those claims first though! I’m going to be selling these and a variety of other ceramics, badges, prints, originals etc in my etsy shop in a couple of weeks. I’ll let you know closer to the time.

Now is the time for requests if there is anything specific you think I should sell!

This time the photos are from a completely normal bog-standard Russian supermarket, where actual real Russians shop, so no-one can accuse me of inaccurately portraying the lives of ordinary citizens or whatever.

The animal biscuits and condensed milk below were my absolute favourite things when I was little. Together, ideally!

Her name is Matilda and she won’t keep still for more than a second, so taking photos of her is a bit of a challenge. She’s a Persian. Her favourite hobby is chewing on electrical cords and biting me when I’m grooming her. She’s getting her first bath today! I’m scared.

The overnight train

We took a train from Moscow to St Petersburg which takes about 8 hours and infinitely less stress than flying. We got plenty of tea and snacks on board and I even managed six hours sleep (fairly impressive as there was constant banging and rattling from the train, plus I slept on the top bunk and clung to the side in fear of flying off the edge). All in all, A+ would do again!

Mosaic magic

I saw this mosaic at The Russian Museum in St Petersburg and I’m still in awe. At first glance it looks just like a painting, but a closer look reveals thousands of tiny pices. It’s a portrait of Yelizaveta Petrovna and it’s a shame that the artist is unknown, because I think it’s pretty amazing.

It’s probably a bit weird to dedicate a whole post to pictures of floors, but I love parquet and I don’t care! Or rather it’s parquetry when it’s geometric shapes and marquetry when it’s any other decorative patterns apparently. These are from various places: the Hermitage, Catherine Palace at Tsarskoye Selo and Peterhof. Aren’t they fantastic?

Where the floors are very old and precious, you have to wear very attractive shoe covers (tapochki!) when walking on them. Lovely.

The day we went to the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, we stopped for lunch in a cafe nearby. A tv show (or film? Looks like it’s called Two Sisters 2) was being filmed right next to us. It was fun watching them film while eating my blinchiki with meat and smetana.

So I’m back

My blogging from St Petersburg was brought to a screeching halt when the hotel’s internet didn’t work on my laptop. Without an internet connection I am basically a wreck by day four, so this was pretty terrible. It also means that I now have 21gb of photographs to sort through. 21gb!!! Expect a lot of Russia updates for the next week or so.
In other news, I got a kitten! That’s a story for another day though :).

Yesterday it rained all day

So we went to the Kremlin Armoury and looked at a lot of very grand and shiny things. Tiny portrait miniatures set in wine goblets, keepsake boxes carved from ivory, silver pocket watches, beautiful fabric fans, jewelled hat pins, antique lace fans, costumes of old Emperors and Empresses and gigantic royal carriages. Needless to say I liked it a lot! Irritatingly, photography wasn’t allowed (I seethe whenever I go to a museum that enforces that rule) but there are some photos on flickr that you can have a look at. Their website is also fairly decent, and shows some of the exhibits.
