Garment Stories: Pants That MATTER

What I wore out in Athens for my 26th birthday, I celebrated by doing what's always on my list of favorite things to do on a special day: eat vegan food and not have to cook it myself.

As for my outfit I stuck to my favorite color combination, all black -not exactly a color I know- because any birthday after your 25th just makes you feel like you're mourning getting just one step closer to your funeral *cries* but my MATTER pants are definitely cheering up this outfit with that statement Kirana handloom print! I've made an entire video styling this pair of trousers in 7 different outfits but I didn't get to talk much about the ethical brand behind them.

As an ethical fashion consumer I always want to have access to as much information about a brand as possible, about the creators, the materials and perhaps most importantly, what the brand's purpose is. Is it making profit or is it going beyond that and affecting positive change in their creator's communities? One of the reasons I immediately fell in love with MATTER was by discovering the plethora of information on their website about their garments, the artisans creating them, the location, craftsmanship and tradition behind the textiles but MATTER's purpose goes beyond just using sustainable textiles and expands into positively impacting their artisans, designers and inspiring customers to value the origin of their garments leading to their Change Beyond Textiles mission that you can read more about on their journal.

The artisans and designers incorporate their own cultural heritage in every pattern, every prints tells a story of their creator and there's such a timelessness in every garment, that can only be a result of choosing traditional rural artisan production over following fast fashion trends. What really impressed me with these pants is how unexpectedly versatile they are, something that I find uncommon in garments with statement prints since they tend to clash with other prints, but this fit and print are the exact opposite. Dyah's Vegan Banana Cake Recipe

While staying at the Blue Karma in Seminyak in Bali I was very fortunate to meet and taste some delicious food made by Blue Karma's chef Dyah. What had to be the the queen of these dishes was definitely the vegan banana cake and Dyah was more than kind to share the recipe with me. I'm not much of a cook but I thought anyone reading this looking for a great vegan banana cake recipe will find this useful!

TIPS FOR LONG & HEALTHY HAIR // My Haircare Routine

I've been getting a TON of requests from you guys to make a hair video so it's finally here! The first of my hair tutorial series.

TIP #1

THE BASICS

Ok, pretty basic but always start brushing your hair from the bottom and move to the roots so you don't cause any damage, also if you don't have straight hair it's best to brush it only before you wash it. Brushing wavy or curly hair will make it look frizzy even if your hair is healthy.

TIP #2

PRE SHOWER

To get soft, healthy hair before I shower I apply my Lani Tropical Hair Treatment. It's vegan, made with 100% natural oils and it smells AMAZING, like real coconuts, I'm addicted to this thing!

So I apply that on my hair, tie it in a bun and leave it in for about 30min to 1 hour so it can work it's magic!

TIP #3

IN THE SHOWER

Right now I've been trying the Mea Natura hair products in the shower. They are a shampoo, conditioner and hair mask from organic olive oil and mostly natural ingredients, I really like them so far and I'm happy to support a Greek beauty brand and from what I've checked they also don't test on animals.

TIP #4

AFTER CARE

Afterwards, I usually let my hair air dry and I apply a light oil to my ends. I use an argan oil serum from Faipa that is also cruelty free. I like this serum because it doesn't leave my hair looking oily afterwards but it protects my super bleached ends from looking like a mess.

TIP #5

PROTECTIVE HAIRSTYLES

In order to protect my hair from further damage, getting tangled and looking messy I use a protective hairstyle. At home I always have my hair in a braid and especially when I go to sleep. I'll admit it's not super attractive but it works. If you don't like braids you can try buns or anything that will prevent your hair from flying all over the place.

TIP #6

THE HAIRCUT

The biggest thing I do to maintain long hair is I don't go to the hairdressers, instead I cut my own hair. From my personal experience, I always ended up with much shorter hair than I wanted and also a lot of hairdressers use hair cutting techniques that damage the hair and cause split ends. Also because I have unusually thick hair most hairdressers don't know what hairstyle works for me so I just do it on my own with youtube tutorials. If you've found a hairstylist that works for you, fantastic! Don't stop going because you saw a girl in a youtube video that cuts her own hair.

I use hair thinning scissors and I only cut my hair 2-3 times a year and only to get rid of really damaged ends or renew my hairstyle.

TIP #7

DIET

Dieting, calorie restricting and weight loss can lead to hair loss and unhealthy hair in general and don't even get me started on how bad that is for your health. But if you want healthy hair AND a beautiful bod I'd recommend a whole foods vegan diet. For me eliminating all animal products from my diet was the only way I could get fit and eat lots of food at the same time and not have to calorie restric. Ethical Fashion Part I - Every Outfit Is A Vote!

First off, welcome to everyone that's new to this blog and many thanks to everyone that's stuck around for a while now! I've been receiving so much support since venturing off to youtube and in all honesty I didn't expect it. I was prepared for troll attacks about protein deficiency, plants with feelings and of course name calling, but no, so far I've only received positive, encouraging and INTELLIGENT comments that have enriched the topics that I tackle in my videos (like today with ethical fashion or veganism) and for that I am very grateful!
Since starting this blog, I've grown. A. Lot, and I've gone from a materialistic teen obsessed with fashion, designers, brands and shopping, to a young adult obsessed with one question: "What can I do to make this world a better place?" But first I had a harder question to answer which was "How do I make myself better?" and make myself I did and am and will keep doing until a freakin third eye grows in the middle of my forehead. So I'm not here to preach, just share what I'm learning in my journey to improvement and one part of this journey is becoming more conscious about how every action I take has a butterfly effect that ripples across the world. Everything we eat, wear or purchase in general has been created by others or from others and since fashion is something that has been influencing me almost my entire life I only felt it right to delve into the ethics of it and maybe one day help improve it.

Now a few questions YOU might be having.

So where does ethical fashion blend into all of this? Get to the point sista!

Where do our clothes come from, who makes them?
Almost all clothes let you know in the label where they are made, countries like Cambodia, China, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam are some of the countries with the highest risk of human and labor rights violations. While not shopping items made in these countries can lead to less "sweatshop clothes" in your closet the main goal is for those people to keep their jobs by earning a fair wage. In my opinion that can only happen if all of us as shoppers voice our opinions! A simple tweet or instagram comment can go a long way if we all did it, (eg. asking topshop on instagram to next time post a picture of their seamstresses wage instead of Cara's bod) You get the picture. It's called online activism and we can all be little activists with a single tweet, so type away!

What about the materials, can those be unethical also?
Unfortunately yes, aside from toxic chemicals used in dyes that are harmful for the workers and the environment there are some other fashion victims nobody seems to care about. Animals. Oh no, here she goes with her hippy bullshit. Yep, here I go, because if I can stop being the fur and leather loving primitive cavewoman that I was, then so can you. Right now.
Watch through all four of these videos, do not look away, you will cringe, you will feel a gut wrenching nausea and disgust and you will cry. But unfortunately, this is reality and everyone needs to know about it. It's the only way you can really grasp why dressing vegan is so important.

If after this you feel ready to make a change, do not fear! There is no need to throw away half your closet, just avoid buying any new animal products and you're good to go, there are more faux and synthetic options in the market these days than ever before. All high street brands have them so it really takes ZERO EFFORT to saves lives and do good!

Why don't any popular fashion bloggers talk about this? It's part of the industry they work in.
In my opinion, every fashion blogger should know about these things whether they choose to talk about it, support it or not, so should magazines and all related online media. Unfortunately, the biggest brands like Topshop or Nike for example are also the biggest sponsors and the most corrupt when it comes to human and labor rights. Saying no to promoting corrupt brands would mean cutting down on their income. What they don't understand is that if we all collectively supported ethical brands (like Asos Green Room, Style Saint, Stella McCartney and many more) then all the power and money of the fashion industry would shift to them.

I want to become an ethical shopper, but I don't know where I should shop and what brands to avoid and also, will it be difficult to make this change?
Firstly, don't worry, becoming an ethical shopper is very easy! Watch the video below where I talk about the most popular brands that we all shop from and let you know which are the safest options and which have been involved in sweatshop, slave and child labor. I have stopped shopping all together but when I really need something these are my favorite options: Asos, Vintage, Etsy (& in general handmade), swapping clothes with friends and my sister, anything that is made locally in Greece and h&m conscious collection. There are literally tons of options but these are just my go-to. I think my number one favourite option has got to be handmade, buying something that someone designed and made on their own although not cheap, it's a fantastic way to feel more connected and respectful towards the creator and the creation.

Ethical Fashion Part II - Where To Shop & Not!

The brands you recommend are all pure evil! I thought this was an ethical fashion blog!
My goal is to make ethical fashion simple and ease people into it, I don't believe it would be effective to ask people to straight away swear off buying any clothes because nobody would give ethical fashion a second thought. Just saying, if you have to choose between h&m and zara, go with h&m, if you have to choose between h&m and handmade, go with handmade. I'm just providing some tools that anyone with critical thinking can use.

I like living in ignorant bliss, why should I come back to this blog?
Ethical fashion is not your thing? That's ok, I'll still be making videos and outfit posts, I'll simply only be working with and promoting brands that support human and labor rights and are cruelty free.

That top has almost become my second skin. I've been really serious about not shopping lately, because I've reached a point in my life where I really don't need any more clothes (I'm not proud of that fyi) but I just couldn't resist. I mean look at it. Talking about things that I actually need, that backpack has saved my life. I carry my laptop with me a lot as well as my massive canon camera and it's managed to fit that and more without breaking my back so good job on that Adidas. I'd say anyone with a tech job or just inseparable from their gadgets needs this. Five stars!

Here's what I typically eat on the weekend! I've seen lots of other health youtubers making this video so i thought you might find it interesting. I consume approximately 2000 calories of fruits and whole foods daily and exercise as often as possible by doing yoga or weight training at home. I'm not a big fan of the gym to be honest, so I prefer to work out with my peace an quiet and at my own pace also, I am literally obsessed with headstands, I'm not sure why but I'm addicted... Let me know if you want me to show you what I eat on a typical working day because it's a little bit different because I have to pack my meals. Thank you for watching!

Disposable Camera Tips | AEGINA ISLAND TRAVEL DIARY

Aegina island summer 2014 on film.

I FINALLY developed the film from 2 disposable cameras and one underwater cam that I had lying around for 9 months to get that super old film look + because I've also been a bit lazy. The pictures are from the trip I took with my boyfriend Maki last June in Aegina island.

I had forgotten my iphone charger at my place and being the photography freak that I am, there was no way we were going on vacation and not taking any cool looking pictures. I've always wanted to experiment with film so we set off to find disposable film cameras in the digital age at the port of Piraeus. Not an easy task, believe me. So in this super dodgy shop, selling tacky Greek souvenirs made in China, we found them, two dusty disposable cameras (5 euros each) we weren't even sure would work (they sort of didn't really) and we set off for our vacation to the island of pistachios. Once we got there I also found a disposable underwater camera that although it looked like it was much better quality than the other two and it was way more expensive (16 euros) it stopped taking pictures after 7 clicks :( booo

Although old disposable cameras are not the most dependable they give off such a nostalgic and beautiful vibe that from now on I will bring at least one with me anywhere I go for vacation.

Here are my 7 tips on getting the best disposable camera vacation photos.

Finding disposable cameras may be tricky. Look in places like souvenir shops, kiosks and of course camera and gadget stores.
The cheaper and uglier in my opinion, the better, more chances the film gets overexposed, you get cool looking light leaks, dust and scratches that will give them that vintage "true instagram filter" vibe.
Knowing what you're shooting can be tricky without a screen, but stand closer to your subject when taking touristy photos, the quality will come out better and the picture will catch more emotions. We were afraid we wouldn't fit in the frame and we came out a bit small in some of the pictures.
Shoot during the daytime! Every picture we took at night came out very dark and unusable. Unless your camera has an operational flash, the ones we bought had a battery operated flash but the batteries were rotten, ew!
Don't forget to smile :) I was so intimidated by the 27 photo limit I was afraid to mess them up with smiling or being goofy, truth is, these cameras have the same effect as instagram filters, they make anyone look good no mater what! So don't be afraid to be yourself even if you don't get 100 takes on one photo.
Now wait. I left mine undeveloped for about 9 months to exaggerate the old film effect, plus it's like a little time capsule and it was cool to get to relive the trip after such a long time instead of posting them on facebook once they were taken and never looking at them again.
When developing the film ask them to have them only on a CD or DVD. You can afterwards have your favorite ones printed out and save money from printing all of them (the good and the fails) For me having the film from three disposable cameras saved on DVD cost 30 euros, I had it done in an average photography studio in Athens, prices could vary depending on where you live though.

Waterproof disposable camera tips:

Forget number 1,2 and 6!
Do your research and order one online from Kodak (what I should have done) Our underwater pictures came out looking like we were swimming in murky water even though it was crystal clear, the shutter button broke and we didn't even get to take enough pictures not to mention I paid for it more than I would if I had ordered a dependable one online and saved myself the disappointment.

Had a very vintage Saturday, went thrifting and snaged a really amazing maxi dress from the 60's from Vintage Athens & Bizarre Bazaar and I can't wait to show you guys once I sew it to fit me better, also found a fantastic vintage lamp at Coo. I'm so glad the Vintage movement is blooming in Athens, you don't need me to tell you why that's awesome, from environmental and ecofriendly reasons to simply owning something with a little history that nobody else owns. Go Vintage!

Also a quick update, after reading a few articles showing how many bloggers actually photoshop their pictures to look thinner, at first I was surprised, then thought I should have seen it coming. I'm not sure why but I felt betrayed by those bloggers, when I previously admired their outfits and thought only someone that thin could pull it off now I don't see the outfit or if they are in shape I just see how insecure they are about themselves. Εven though they have so many people looking up to them. Also being a public figure and photoshoping your body to look thinner is the same as lying to your followers, saying that basically fashion is a fantasy that can't exist in the real world. What they don't understand is that there are a lot of younger girls that are very influenced by them and want to look like them at any cost, unaware that their role model's appearance is clearly an illusion made by liquify filters and warp effects. I just wanted to put on record that my pictures are photoshop reshape free, not that anyone has questioned that but just saying, I only use photoshop to enhance the colors of my images and resize them NOT to make myself look thinner, being a fashion blogger is about showing wearable and practical outfits on the bodies of more relatable, average and not model sized people or unrealistic artificially made bodies. Rant of the day completed! Hurray!

Sorry for the resting bitch face in all my pictures, I don't know why when I'm happy and having a good time I look like I'm planning to murder someone... aaanyway.

I bought this vegan faux fur from Blanco a few years ago on sale for 10 euros. Keeps me warm and cozy and I'd say it looks pretty cute too, no need to slaughter innocent animals and wear their skin for a made up aesthetic of supposed "better quality", There are new ways to stay warm other than the materials cavemen wore. Sorry for preaching but I'm not sorry hehe, I'll shut up when I stop seeing every single bitch at fashion week wearing fur and leather. I'm hoping I'm not the only one that cares this much, there's just so much injustice in this world it would be nice if we could all participate in it as little as possible. There goes my little speech for the day, I hope you are all having a wonderful day and beginning of Spring!

VEGAN REVIEW | WAGAMAMA GREECE

I finally got to meet up with Agape over some Japanese food at Wagamama in Kifisia near Athens last Saturday. I also made a sad effort at vlogging the day although I don't think I'm getting any better at it so here it goes with good old traditional blogging ftw!

I thought I'd give a try at reviewing the vegan options at Wagamama for my massive number of vegan readers that will appreciate this... #muchsarcasm

I'll begin with the positives first as all good people do and because there were plenty, amazing service, very polite and pleasant staff, nice atmosphere and yummy Japanese food. For the negatives, I felt the quantities were a bit small for the starters even though the main meals were massive but quite expensive. I'm not a big fan of restaurants with tiny portions and big prices. Also when I pay 10 euros for a meal I want my taste buds to feel like I'm tripping with cats in space on rainbows and I wasn't. I would recommend not going there on an empty stomach and order the vegetable dumplings (gyoza), they were the tastiest of everything I tried.

So if I had to rate it with space cats tripping on rainbows
I would give Wagamama 3/5 space cats tripping on rainbows because when a restaurant is stingy on their quantities so am I with my space cats.

Wearing copper "space" pants that I bought dirt cheap from H&M layered with my faux shearling coat from Asos because it's getting really chilly here. Spent another Saturday in the center on Athens taking a walk in the more quiet streets under the Acropolis because the central shopping areas were crowded as f@ck. I felt like I was back in China with so many people doing their holiday shopping, I'll pass, sales are starting in a week and that's MY favorite time of the year. *Scrooge laughter*

How cute is that little cat btw? He was so friendly and adorable!

Spent this Saturday at this beautiful cafe in the center of Athens, Montalbano in my cozy faux fur jacket and gross vintage mom jeans. I'm probably the only person that likes those jeans, I ended up cutting up the knee with scissors right before I left the house and will probably add a few more scrapes to it to make it look more distressed. I need a good tutorial on bleaching jeans, any recommendations?

Spent the afternoon on Monday walking around Acropolis with Marianna who took these lovely photos for me and then of course had some awesome falafel from Falafellas, I'm so surprised with how many vegan options I actually have in Athens and it's not even costing me more.

I wore this amazing knit that my mom made and it's available on her etsy shop! (a little bit of shameless promotion ehem) it's so soft, worm and it's so fluffy I'm gonna die!

One more Saturday spent in Athens apartment hunting. It was a bit chilly but after walking so much the coat was a bit unnecessary, but still it's one of my favorite pieces in my closet and it was the last one on sale, lucky me! Now that I think about it there aren't a lot of things I've bought that weren't on sale or on some sort of discount. Oh how un-chic of me! I wish I cared just a little, but I don't. #teambrokegirls who's with me?

WALK IN THE PARK

This was the outfit I wore on Saturday in Athens where I went for a walk with my boyfriend. Because I was going to do a lot of walking I went for a sort of urban-lumberjack outfit with a big fluffy scarf from Three Birds Sitting that is actually my mom's etsy store!

We passed by this little park before we headed for food at Food Str, loved their vegan soup but the quantities were way too small so later I went for some fries that I.do.not.regret. Wish I had taken a picture, not my greatest blogging moment.
