If you’re looking to get as much space out of a small bedroom as possible, then bunk beds are the ideal answer. Not only are they considered as a great way to sleep, but there are also a variety of designs to choose from depending on the design and layout of the bedroom. When they’re young, children frequently share bedrooms, as most go to sleep at the same time. This makes it easier for mothers and fathers to relax in the evening. However problems occur when your kids get older, with more space needed inside the room. This is where bunk beds come in handy.

Bunk beds allow you to make use of the vertical space in a bedroom, whilst also making room for extra storage, play areas and places to keep clothes and toys. Some bunk beds even come with combined storage attached to the unit, making it even easier to keep your children’s room tidy!

In recent years, bunk beds have solved many problems related to limited bedroom space in small urban housing, and they’re also a great way to accommodate guests for the weekend. When it comes to your children, they’ll have great fun battling it out for the top bunk, and some designs even come with desks and work areas, meaning they can also learn together outside the classroom. Bunk beds are practical, cost-effective and the best way to maximise small living space, and they offer advantages over individual beds.

Bunk Beds VS Individual Beds

Firstly, bunk beds double the capacity of a single bed, whilst also limiting the space a single bed takes up in a room. There’s also places to store toys, school books and clothes, and like previously mentioned, some even some with desks attached so your children can do their school work. Although this option does depend on what model you select, and how much you’re willing to spend, you can already see many of the advantages bunk beds have over individual beds.

Before buying kids bunk bed for your children’s room, it’s best to do a little research. Not only are there a vast number of models out there to choose from, but you must also consider the look of the bunk bed, and how it is going to complement the rest of the room. No one wants a ghastly bunk bed in their house, no matter how practical or cost effective it is. Always make sure that you measure the room before you go out shopping for the bunk bed, and enquire into the different colours available.

Styling The Room

In some cases, finding the right bunk bed to colour-coordinate with your kid’s bedroom could be a difficult task, however there’s always a way around this. Instead of trying to find a frame colour to match the walls, why not match the walls with the bunk bed. A lick of paint here and there won’t take long, especially if the room is small, and suddenly you’ve got a room that is vibrant, and also coordinated with your bunk bed!

Just suddenly thought of sharing this repurposed potting shed hat I've seen courtesy of www.sunset.com, I was amazed how creative some people can be. This potting shed was converted into a tiny, beautiful home office. Why not? Work at home Moms deserved some kind of privacy, too right?

This home office idea was from a working Mom herself, Martha Mendoza. After seeing this picture, I suddenly got the urge of making a detached home office for myself. I love fun and adventure and most of all, I love reinventing things and having these into full use.

The lounge is one of the most important rooms in the home. After a long and hard day at work, there is nothing better than kicking back and relaxing on your sofa and watching an hour of TV.

If you are considering purchasing new furniture then this is a chance for you to make your house a home. You can pick furniture that is in line with current trends, your style and that gives you maximum comfort. Before picking any items in the lounge, you need to consider a few different things.

Price
It is likely that you have already set a budget for your lounge furniture. You’ll need to allocate segments of this budget to individual items. For instance, if you have a £2,000 budget, then £250 might go towards a new coffee table, whereas £1,000 may go towards a leather sofa.

Have a quick browse around online retailers and see what they are offering and at what prices. This will give you a good idea of what is really going to be an acceptable budget for the new furniture as a whole, but also for the individual items. Remember, online retailers will regularly offer discounts and may even have discount codes that can be picked up, which could save you 10-15%!

Style
You will need to get a cool mix of what is currently in fashion, what suits your house and what really suits you. By checking interior design magazines, you will be able to see the styles of furniture that are really popular. Of course, getting items that suit your house is going to be crucial, but also difficult. For example, a contemporary sofa is going to look terrible in a cottage that is 200 years old. Don’t just pick the items that you like, as once they are in the house, they really need to blend in.

Size
The size of furniture helps to create a unique look and feel to individual rooms and the actual house. Having items that are too big will make a room feel cramped. Having furniture that is too small will make a room feel incredibly empty and possibly even cold. You can work out sizes for furniture based on existing items in the home. That being said, it might be worth taking a trip to a local furniture store. Sometimes they will have examples of rooms with different pieces of furniture in them for you to look at. This will give you an idea of what is going to be suitable.

Comfort
Obviously comfort only really relates to the items in the lounge that you are going to be sitting on. This might be chairs that are designed for the corner of the lounge, catching the sun that beams through the window or this could be reclining leather sofas.

Regardless of the item, you really do need to check them out for comfort. There is no point have an item that looks perfect in the home, but is incredibly uncomfortable. All this will mean is that you start to create excuses to get rid of this furniture as soon as possible.

If you want to give your beds a twist, you may want to consider adding cute had boards! Some of the featured designs by BHG, as seen below are DIY designs. If you are creative and want to revive those old furniture at home, you can convert those to a decorative head board. :)

If you will ask me about my personal choice, I think I would go for the first and fourth design. The first design below is quite easy to do and I would just be needing a simple plywood plus some spare linens and perhaps a thin foam that could easily be bought from an upholstery supplies store. We have to choose the colors of the fabric so that it would match the color of our bedroom walls.

What I love about the fourth design is that it is functional and would give me a lot of storage spaces for my stuff. This is just a simple wood work and you may want to recycle the drawers and shelves from your old furniture. Adding a color that would match the color motif of the bedroom is necessary to make this head board stand out.

Washing machines are some of the most commonly sought-after home appliances. They have made live pretty simple since all your laundry work is handled by a machine. Regrettably, making an informed decision on the right type of washing machine to purchase can be difficult since there are several brands and models available in the market.

But, with the right information, the task of selecting the best washing machine ought not to be challenging. Listed below are 10 things that you need to keep in mind when shopping for an ideal washing machine

Location

Before stepping out into the market, make certain that you have a location in mind where you would like to place the washing machine. There should be a space of about 60 centimeters between the washing machine and other water sources, for example, wash basin and shower.

If you have limited space in your house, opt for front-loading washing machines as they enable you to load dirty linen from the front and can easily be fitted under a countertop. If you do not have enough space left for a dryer, buy a washer-dryer combo machine.

Capacity

In addition to location, you also need to think about the amount of laundry that you are going to do on a daily basis. For a majority of households, a 5kg washing machine is more than adequate. However, if you have 2-3 children on your household, then it is best to buy a 6kg capacity washing machine. On the other hand, if you have relatives residing with you or have an unusually large family, opt for 8-9 kg washing machines.

Energy Star Compliant

As is the case with other electrical home appliances, you need to take into consideration the energy consumption of the washing machine you are planning to purchase. Energy Star rated washing machines are the best since they consume roughly 30% less power compared to ordinary washing machines. If you cannot find an Energy Star rated washing machine, look for a model with an A+++ rating.

Look for Brands Labeled “Smart”

Smart washing machines will ensure that less water and energy is used during the laundering process. Smart machines automatically detect the load and as such adjust the amount of water and energy used to clean the clothes.

Washable Washing Machines

Since washing machines are primarily used to scrub and clean dirty linen, they are prone to microorganisms that can pose health issues to your household. Therefore, it is important to purchase a washing machine that can be disinfected after a couple of washes.

Stealth Operation

Look for a washing machine that implements sound reduction technology. By doing so, you will be eliminating the stress and anxiety caused by the noise generated by the washing machine during operation.

Eco-Friendly Washing Machines

An eco-friendly washing machine ensures that water and energy consumption is reduced by at least 20%. The key reason why you need opt for an eco-friendly washing machine is because you’ll hardly be using the full capacity of the machine thereby leading to wastage of energy and water.

Detergents

Do not pick a washing machine that only limits you to certain washing detergents. Thanks to technology, there are a myriad of washing detergents that can be used with washing machines and as such you should not be restricted to a particular brand.

User-Friendly Settings

Do not buy a washing machine that requires you to read the manual every time you need to use it. A good washing machine should be user-friendly and are usually characterized by the types of controls installed therein.

Read Reviews

Finally, before buying a washing machine, you need to take time and read the various reviews published on the web regarding different brands and models of washing machines.

Whereas the above rules are designed to help you in choosing the right type of washing machine, it is important to take into account your needs for a washing machine. Before stepping out into the market, take time and evaluate your needs for a washing machine. Thereafter, go through the various brands and models accessible in the market, while still at the same time bearing in mind the information provided herein. Preparing a list of your needs will prevent you from buying a brand or model that is either too big or small. Then again, you need to take time and read through the various washing machine reviews published on the web. Reviews are written by consumers who have prior experiences with certain brands and models thus providing you with crucial information such as performance and warranty before making your purchase.

WikiTalks has a lot of reviews http://wikitalks.com/category/new-reviews/household-office-appliances/major-appliances/washers-major-appliances/

Generally, the internet is the best marketplace to make your purchase from especially if you are keen on discounted prices and variety. Unlike brick-and-mortar stores that may limit you to the brands and models accessible for sale, there are no limitations if you opt to shop from the internet.

The kitchen is the most active and widely used room in most houses. It’s usually where the bulk of activities happen, that’s why it’s important to ensure that it is well lit. A poorly lit kitchen makes it difficult to prepare and cook food. At the same time, it’s hard to eat a decent meal if the light is not bright enough.

Unfortunately, many people consider kitchen lighting fixtures as an afterthought when thinking about kitchen improvements. They are more focused on what type of countertop to choose, which color scheme to follow, and which kitchen appliances to buy. Little do they know that kitchen lighting fixtures can influence many elements within the kitchen.

With this knowledge in mind, you need to consider several things when choosing lighting fixtures for your kitchen. These factors are vital regardless if you are aiming to achieve a modern, traditional, or urban look for your kitchen.

1. Consider the size of your kitchen. It’s useless to choose a very large and ornate lighting fixture for your kitchen if you have a very small one or if the ceiling is low. A design that’s wide and lies flat on the ceiling would be the better choice, as it can provide ample illumination to your kitchen without making the ceiling look cramped. However, if you have a large kitchen, you might want to install more than one lighting fixture and have your electrician wire the lights together. That way, you can easily turn off the light in one part of the kitchen that you’re not using and just keep the one you need turned on.

2. Consider the function of your kitchen. In the get-go, we mentioned that the kitchen is probably the busiest room in most houses. The same may be true for your kitchen. Hence, if you occasionally dine in your kitchen for informal family dinners, it might be a good idea to install a lighting fixture with a dimmer switch. That way, it becomes easier for you to adjust the level of brightness in the room.

3. Consider the shadows that lighting fixtures cast in your kitchen. In many homes, overhead lighting present challenges since these have a tendency to cast shadows. Moreover, downward lights tend to brighten only a small part of the kitchen and leave other areas in darkness because of its limited reach. If you’re going to install overhead lighting in your kitchen, it might be a good idea to invest on additional lighting such as under-cabinet lights to light areas beneath cabinets, floor lamps to brighten up a dark corner of the kitchen, and functional lights above the sink and countertops to make it easier for you to prepare and cook food.

Your choice of lighting fixtures for your kitchen would largely depend on whether you’re merely remodeling a part of it, if you’re remodeling it on a grand scale, or if you simply want to replace your current kitchen lighting. Whatever you decide on, there are Keller lighting stores where you can find the best options for your kitchen lighting fixtures.

Although they are small, ants can cause massive damages to wooden houses and infest foods in the household. They can also be very irritating especially when they start making large colonies near your house. You can never completely eliminate ants in your house since they can live even in most unlikely circumstances. However, there are several ways on how you can significantly get rid of ants and reduce their number. These include the following:

1. Hiring a Pests Control Team.

There are many pest control teams such as Pestbusters who can help you get rid of ants in your house. Many people who try to eliminate ants on their own are unable to do so because they usually focus on getting rid of the worker ants. Although a huge percentage of the ant colony is worker ants, eliminating them one by one will not be able to wipe out the entire group. In order to stop them from growing in number, you must first target their queen. However, it is not easy for individuals to eliminate the queen if they don't know how to find her. With the help of Pestbusters, it will be a lot easier.

Pests control services do not only eliminate ants which can be seen by the naked eyes. These teams also make ways to prevent re-infestation of ants. They apply special compounds to every possible entry points to prevent the ants from entering your house. They also destroy the entire colony of ants to make sure their eradication.

2. Using natural methods.

You can also use natural methods to deal with pesky ants. These include the following:

Vinegar: Vinegar can act as a natural insecticide to eliminate ants. All you need to do is to locate the entry points of the ants and spray some vinegar. It will be a bit difficult for them to enter your house if all entry points are treated with vinegar.

Citrus: Citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges also contain cider compounds. Just like vinegar, you can spray them on entry points to stop the ants from entering. You can also pour the citrus juice on the ant hill to get rid of the ants living in the area.

Black pepper and salt: Ants are usually discouraged to cross a line when there is black pepper or salt sprinkled on it. In order to stop them from entering, sprinkle salt or black pepper in window sills, doors and other entry points.

3. Using insecticides.

Readily manufactured insecticides can also be used to eliminate ants in your house. You can purchase them from many stores. Directions on how to use are included on the package.

Getting rid of ants can be successfully done through a combination of several methods. Natural methods are inexpensive and can be effective. However, they may not be the ultimate method in eliminating ants. Insecticides are also effective but using them frequently can lead to certain health effects especially to children. The best and the safest way to eliminate ants are through the help of a good exterminator team. Contact them now and eliminate ants in no time.

PestBusters – Pest control management services company in Singapore. PestBusters was founded on the mission that the company would set the standard for the Pest Control Industry. Established in 1991, the company quickly became one of the most trusted names in the hospitality.

I am a big fan of outdoor living. I feel more inspired to create an outdoor room rather than designing the interiors of my house. There's something in outdoors that inspires me. I just love the idea of having a good view of a garden with a water feature, getting a fresh air while sitting in a comfy chair or bench, having some coffee and chatting with friends or family. To me, that is a kind of happiness like no other!

Take a look at the following outdoor designs. I'm sure you will find something that could fit your fancies and style. :) I so love the vibrant colors!

You need to carefully consider the area and the amount of space available where you want to place the furniture, and the budget you have. It may also be wise to consider the lighting of the room, where you intend placing the items of furniture. There are many tips and tricks that can be implemented to bring a specific look or change to a room. A stark, white walled room can be warmed up by placing wooden wardrobes or wooden bed in it. Adding the correct height of blinds or curtains can make a room look smaller or larger. Good quality, durable furniture that is often more expensive is usually the best choice. You will not have to replace it for many years to come. Patterned fabrics can cause complications with the decor. Unless you are very sure that it will complement your room, stick with plain fabrics on furniture.

It is important that all items in the room fit together, even if they do not match. Your choice of wardrobes, beds, cabinets, tables, chairs and other pieces of furniture should reflect your own personal style and provide you with comfort. Try out as many unconventional ways as you can think of when arranging your furniture in your home. You may come up with a fresh, new look that you find really pleasing. Do not be afraid to try something different. Ensure that your furniture is in proportion to the room size. If you do want to buy items that are overly large, place them in a bigger room, or an alternative is to place fewer furniture items in the room. It is often possible to buy furniture according to the way in which it will be arranged in the room. Furniture that can also serve as a storage unit, with hidden or built in storage space is the perfect option for space saving. Add occasional items, like cushions with colors that can be changed at intervals to give the room a fresh look or plants that can be moved around. These items can complete the look you want to achieve.

If you are someone who likes to entertain on a regular basis, smaller items of furniture will be more suitable for your home, as they are easier to move around. Different occasions call for different settings. It is always a good idea to have a variety of small coffee tables with varied table tops and different decorative stands. These can be moved around from time to time to change the style of a room. Compliment your furniture with colorful rugs and well-chosen pieces of art. Remember to keep it balanced. You want a home not a museum. The design should flow and enhance the natural elements of your rooms. Designer furniture is not always the ideal choice for functionality. It is essential that your choice of purchases is going to give you the best use and make sense in your home. There is never any harm in doing a little research and arming yourself with ideas, tips and tricks before embarking on a home decorating project.

Our own porch at home

If you have an extra space in front of your house, you may want to consider adding a porch. A porch is an ideal place to hang out and relax as it is usually covered with roofing to protect you from the sun but it is normally open air allowing you to feel the fresh air and enjoy the view or your garden.

I personally like to stay in our porch as I always have a good view of my pocket garden and mini water falls. Somehow, it connects me to nature and allows me to relax after a hard day's work.

Pests are a major problem in many houses and building in Singapore. Many types of pests like bed bugs, termites, and ants are infesting our homes. It is good to control the pest from infesting your home because some of them can cause dangerous diseases or other health problems. Therefore, pest control management is necessary in order to eliminate them at home completely. One of the most effective pest control strategy is the use fumigation process. Whether the pest have infested cupboards, bedroom, table room or any other place at home fumigation has proven to be the most effective treatment method in pest control.

It is always advisable to put preventive measures to avoid pests from infesting in your home. However, this is not always possible because they might infest without your knowledge. When this happens fumigation might be the only solution to eradicate them completely. If you do not have the skills and knowledge to use this method to control the pest, there are many pest control management companies in Singapore, for example, PestBusters that provide the high quality pest control services at an affordable cost.

Fumigation Process: How Does It Work

Fumigation process involves filling an entire building with fumigants that will kill the pests by suffocating or poisoning the pests. This is an effective method to kill pests such as wood boring insects and termites that cause major damage to wooden areas in many homes in several areas of Singapore. During the fumigation process, the whole house is covered with large tent and then the fumigant is then released into the building. It is important that the house remain covered for sometimes in order to give the fumigant the opportunity to penetrate all areas and kill all the pests. Then the house is ventilated, so that the poison can disperse, in order to be safe. The house is covered with the tent to prevent the fumigant from escaping into the atmosphere as a way of preventing air pollution by the fumigants. It is against the environmental laws in Singapore to fumigate without putting the cover. The fumigation process is determined by the size and type of house being fumigated, kind of pest, how infested is the home and the temperature by which the fumigant is used.

Fumigation Techniques Being Used

There are three fumigation techniques than can be used. There is solid fumigation that involves the use of solid fumigants, for example, pellets, powder or tablets. This is a safer technique compared to either liquid or gas fumigation. Liquid fumigation involves spraying of chemicals over a large area mainly to eradicate pest such as bedbugs or termites. Liquid fumigation works faster that gas or solid fumigation process in eradication of pests. Gas fumigation involves use if fumigants that are in gaseous state and applied in closed places to avoid the gases from spreading into the air. This is the most dangerous fumigation technique because it is possible to inhale the fumigants because the fumigants spread quickly into the air. The most effective gas fumigant is methyl bromide that kills bed bugs, ants and termites very quickly.

PestBusters – Pest control management services company in Singapore. PestBusters was founded on the mission that the company would set the standard for the Pest Control Industry. Established in 1991, the company quickly became one of the most trusted names in the hospitality.

I love writing posts about designing small spaces. Not that I live in a very small house, but it's more to my preference of creating more moving space at home. My interest and preference in home designs had greatly shifted from a complex to the simplest form. I find that less clutter is great and I am a number one fan of storage solutions. I have worked on several storage solution projects at home. If only I can replace all the furniture in my house with the ones that offer more storage spaces, I've already done it! But buying a new set of furniture is so costly. Besides, what I am going to do with the old ones? I can never be assured that I could sell everything in an instant, right? So, the only way to correct everything is to find a solution to create more spaces with what I already have.

Sooner, I will be working at home. That's one of my plans. Again, I was scouting for space saving designs for my work desk. Take a look at the above photos. These are all space savers! The one on the first photo is my personal favorite and I can't wait to have this on my home. Really a smart solution! :)

What's yours?

Before a steel building can be erected, it should pass the local building department’s inspection process to ensure its safety. Read on to find out how the plan check and building inspection for steel buildings work.

Steel buildings have gained worldwide popularity due to their enduring and endearing qualities. They are light weight yet durable, visually pleasing, versatile, sustainable and cost and energy efficient. With such excellent qualities, it is no surprise that they are becoming the building system of choice by many professional builders and building owners alike.

It should be noted, however, that as the technology for manufacturing steel building systems has evolved to a point where all the elements and components of such structures are fabricated at facilities distant from the site of erection, a plan check and building inspection are necessary to ensure the building’s integrity and compliance with specific codes. Here is a brief look how the plan check and building inspection of steel buildings are carried out.

Inspection of proposed building site

One of the prerequisites before a steel building design plan is finalized is the thorough inspection of the conditions of the site where the structure is intended to be built. This should be done well in advance of the planning stage as it can affect size and type of the structure as well as the project’s total costs which will be added into the proposal. Checking the site will also prevent the builder from encountering any surprises that can entail extra monetary investment and physical labor.

After the site has been thoroughly inspected and all the possible restrictions have been accounted for, final plans for the building can then be drafted by the designer following the city or town’s administered building codes and submitted for review to the local building department.

Plan check process

The plan check process for a steel building is similar to what is encountered for other kinds of structural system. That is, the professional reviewer from the local building department will carefully examine the building’s specifications and verify if they are accurate and comply with the local code requirements.

Architectural sketches are also checked to ensure that everything is correct and designed according to building code jurisdiction. For instance, the plan should show that wall types are properly marked, fire-rated assemblies are outlined, and key details about the structure’s connections, mechanical, and utility line (electrical and plumbing) drawings are in sync with the structural drawings. Nonetheless, structural drawings are reviewed to assess their consistency and to make sure that specific details for major building components and trusses are provided.

Should the reviewer find any problem with the proposed building plan, corrections and modifications will have to be created by the designer so that the structure complies with both industry and local building standards.

Construction progress inspection

Of course, the inspection process of the steel building does not end with the approval of the plan alone. Progress inspections by the building department are also carried out during the construction phase of the building. The assigned building officials will visit the structure during the stages of its completion to make sure that appropriate construction procedures are being implemented on site and the building itself is being constructed following the drawings previously approved by the building department.

I know a lot of Moms who love plants and gardening a lot, just like me. However, I was just luckier in the sense that I have ample space in my yard, thus there's no problem for me to pursue this interest. But for those who are apartment dwellers and space is a problem, then you can find an inspiration from vertical gardening ideas shown above. Vertical gardening is "in" now a days as population is getting bigger and there's not much land space left for garden enthusiasts. Real estate developers are building flats and condominiums with no space for gardening and even the size of the unit itself is not big enough to hold all your home stuff. But there's always a solution for every problem thus vertical gardening came into the picture. I'm loving those ideas shown above and I might try one too in my own home. :)

Accomplish your masonry project safely by taking these safety precautions into heart:

Regardless if you intend to pour a small slab or build a stone archway, tackling a masonry project demands careful attention towards your personal safety. Many injuries from caustic materials, flying shards of stones, and sharp edges can be easily avoided if you take safety precautions seriously before you proceed working on a masonry job. So to keep injuries at bay and ensure a safe working environment while you tackle your masonry project, below are some safety practices you need to keep in mind.

Wear the right attire

No matter how small your masonry project is, wearing the right clothing for the job is essential to ensuring your safety. Basically, clothing should always be kept in good repair while you work. Torn shirt or work pants may snag on your tools or materials which can cause slips or fall. At the most, shirt sleeves and tails and pant cuffs should be buttoned or rolled up so they do not catch on materials and ladders or scaffolding when working on heights.

You should also be careful to protect your feet because they are at risk of being struck or crushed by heavy stone. So be sure to wear steel-toed shoes with sturdy heels, as they are capable of enduring heavy blows and at the same time provide proper support to your feet and ankles.

Wear protective equipment

Stone products can be health hazards. While being cut, shards of stone can hit your eyes and the dust they produce may irritate your skin. To prevent any of these from happening, always wear protective equipment as you work around your masonry project. Protective gear such as particle mask, eyewear, and gloves are vital equipment that will help ensure your safety when handling or mixing dry mixes and when using cutting and striking tools such as saws, chisels and mauls.

Keep your work area clean and organized

It is a good idea to designate an area where you can organize all your tools and equipment while they are not in use. Likewise, dedicate a space where you can safely stack your masonry products. The accepted method for stacking masonry products is that they should be vertically in line and should not be stacked too high to avoid them from falling. Do not forget to keep the work area clean at all times to make it easier for you to locate items when you need them.

Lift with care

More often than not, working on a masonry project may involve lifting and transporting heavy stone and tools from one location to another. To avoid suffering from unnecessary, painful injuries like back strain and even hernia, it is a good idea to wear a lifting belt.

Also, use safe lifting techniques when moving masonry products. For instance, before moving a stone, make sure to remove all scraps from the area where the object will be moved and make sure that it is free from slopes, holes and uneven footing as these things can be hazards. Then, examine the best way to pick and grip the stone. When you are ready to lift it, be sure to keep your feet as close to the stone as possible and apply good grip. Bend your knees and keep your back straight when lifting the stone, and keep it as close to your body as you move it to the new location. If you feel that the masonry product’s weight is questionable, do not attempt to lift it on your own. Instead, get extra help to avoid injuring yourself.

Be mindful of power tools

Be sure to pay special attention when you using power tools for your project. Use GFCI extension cord if you need to plug power tools outdoors or if the materials are wet. This type of extension cord protects against electrical shock that can be caused by a faulty tool or worn or wet plug or cord.

Work safely on heights

For projects that require extended time working at heights, use a scaffolding or ladder. However, do not forget to inspect the scaffold or ladder before use to ensure that it is safe. It should be set on a firm base and tied to a secure post or support so that it will not be dislodged. The areas on which you need to step should be free of clutter and should offer some type of grip for your hands. If you need to carry tools on the scaffold or ladder, place them in a tool bag, shove a plumb rule through the bag’s handle and sling it over your shoulder. This will make it easier for you to ascend to and descend from the scaffolding or ladder.

Maybe you have already shifted to digital books and have gotten away from those traditional paper back books, then chances are you are now having an empty book case in your room. Why not covert this into a shoe rack? You will love the idea of being able to create more spaces for your growing shoes and keep them organized and easy to reach. Love this idea! You can have a good view of your shoe collection and you are able to covert a useless piece of furniture into something that's worth keeping. Try it! :)

The cost of everything seems to be rising nowadays, from food and drinks to gas and electricity. With these tough economic times, how are we supposed to get by without sacrificing some of those important luxuries? Sometimes it's hard to even put together a budget, as prices just keep going up. There's no need to re-mortgage the house just yet though, as here are some top tips on how you can lower those expensive utility bills, and finally have some money to put aside for the nicer things in life.

Shop Around for Cheaper Suppliers

The first thing to do, is make sure you're getting the right deal for your property. If you have stuck with one utility provider since you moved in, you may not be getting your money's worth. Use the internet, or call around, and search for different utility providers. Many will have deals for new customers, but check to see how long these last. It's no good having a great deal if it is only going to last half of your contract length, before becoming more expensive than your current provider. Many utility companies will offer discounts if you have more than one service with them, so check to see what is most cost effective for your home.

Make some repairs

Appliances or equipment that doesn't work well in your home can be a big drain on your utilities. A dripping tap can cost a fortune in water (it really does all add up) or even repairs, when it finally gives up completely. Little holes in the ceiling, walls or roof can lead to big problems with drafts and damp, which can make your home feel colder and will have you reaching for that thermostat. If the washing machine, fridge, oven or TV have been playing up then get them fixed! Putting it off can mean big repair costs later, but will also have a negative impact on your utility bills. As an example, ovens that aren't functioning properly can take ages to heat up. This means you're going to be using more gas, or electricity, just to cook your dinners. Another key part of your home to keep in tip top condition is your boiler, as a faulty boiler really well make those bills soar.

Upgrade what you can

We don't all have the money to make eco-friendly upgrades on the home, but there are some purse friendly options. Simply having double glazed windows installed, which is not very expensive, can reduce those utility bills in the summer and winter. Double glazing can keep your home cool in the summer and nice and toasty in the winter, without having to fiddle with central heating or air conditioning. Other options to look into are water butts, which will catch your rain water and can then be used for cleaning the car, watering the plants, and so on. If you have some spare cash then have a look at solar panels, eco-friendly insulation or perhaps even grass roofs!

These three simple steps can really help reduce those utility bills, without you having to spend a fortune in the first place. Ensuring you have the best deal is the first step to cutting down those costs, so make sure you shop around. Next it's time to make those repairs you've been putting off for ages, in order to make sure everything is working as it should be. Finally, upgrading some of the most vital parts in your home can greatly improve your energy efficiency, even if it is just a more efficient light bulb, or two!

Peter North has been working on lowering his bills for the last two years and loves to lower his bills as often as possible. The biggest impact on his energy consumption was the installation of windows from the supplier of the best double glazing in Essex.

I felt so ecstatic after seeing this backyard patio design. Really cool and awesome! I just wonder how it feels to be in this kind of spot in your backyard. So relaxing! I love the fact that everything was incorporated in this design. A place to dine, a place to chat and a small corner for self relaxation. Plants are minimal and neatly arranged.

I love to see a hammock in my yard. It's a cool way to have a nap in the afternoon. Love those throw pillows, too.

What do you think of this overall set up?

During our recent vacation at Bangkok Thailand, I've noticed that one of the hotel facilities provided to guests by the hotel where we've stayed is self laundry services. This was made possible by providing coin operated washing machines on one of the hotel floors. Normally, those hotels where I used to stay would offer laundry services to hotel guests but the prices being offered is a way too high. If you are staying with the whole family, that would definitely add up a big sum to your hotel expenses. That's why I was extremely glad to see that the hotel was offering coin operated washing machines. For THB30 per load on a 6.5 kgs machine, you can enjoy cheap laundry services and take control of your time as you can gain access to the area anytime of the day. From the looks of it, I've realised that coin laundry business is simpler to manage than other businesses as it only requires a minimum of unskilled labor. Many owners of this type of business successfully operate it on a part time basis giving them a leeway for a multi-store ownership. As a business owner, you do not need a huge amount of capital to begin with and the return of investment can be realised in no time.

Operating a coin laundry business provides a solid opportunity for a steady income and assures every investor of a generous amount of investment. What I like most in this kind of business is the low maintenance and the low monthly operational cost. But just like any other business, going into this type of business requires a little know how to assure that you are able to keep the business running to it's full potential. You should have a solid background about machine operations, trouble shooting and preventive maintenance servicing. A coin operated business is ideal for those who wanted to run a successful business without sacrificing a substantial amount of free time.

This unique industry offers a lot of possible opportunities for expansion if managed wisely. While start up costs could be a problem should you decide to operate in full swing, failure rate compared to other businesses is slightly evident. The many advantages of operating this business will definitely outshine the disadvantages. One of the safest way to ensure success in this business is being able to source for best laundry equipment. You must do an extensive research in order to find the one that suits your budget without compromising the quality and excellence of the product. Some good companies manufacturing and selling excellent laundry equipment like speed queen should be included in your list. From there, you could make a comparison and get some feedback from their previous satisfied customers.

With these being said, the huge potential of going into a coin laundry business should not be discounted. The prospects are great, and marketing the business is not really a painful undertaking considering that laundry services is a necessity for every household.

It's going to be Mother's Day soon and I'm blessed because I still have my Mom with me. Hubby is not as lucky as I am cause he lost both his parents many years ago. I lost my Dad when I was in still in college. He didn't have the opportunity to see my children. But I have so many good memories about Dad. He's a very strict father and all of us were really scared of him, however, I couldn't deny the fact that he was a good father to us. I remembered how we feel secured and protected knowing that he's around. I was just thinking, "what if he's still around at this time?" "Will I be celebrating Fathers day with him?" If he's still alive now, perhaps I am already busy looking for a perfect gift for him on Father's Day. It wouldn't be hard to find a present for him though, as he was just a very simple man with very simple needs. I remembered that he never drinks any alcoholic beverages but he smokes a lot. If he's still alive, perhaps I can get for him best maduro cigars. Our closeness as a family was affected by his loss. I guess we can no longer go back to how we used to be. That's very sad, but life is full of surprises, we may never know. Perhaps, time can heal all wounds. But I am happy knowing that I had a great father and he will always be in my heart forever. :)

During my last vacation in the Philippines, I had a great time organizing my pantry. I get inspirations from my previous posts on pantry designs and pantry organization ideas. Although I wasn't really able to do a big make over, I was happy that I was able to have a good start. I bought some small plastic jars of uniform color which I used to store some kitchen stuff like flour, bread crumbs, cereals, sugar, powdered milk, died bay leaves, ground pepper, etc. It works well, as everything looks nice in a row in my kitchen shelf. Now everything gets more visible and easy to find. I bought my cute plastic jars on a cheap price as these were on sale at SM Super Market. It's priced at Php100 per pack of 6. Not bad, huh?

Sooner, I will be moving on to the next level ad that's buying some bigger jars with lids to store some snacks like biscuits, candy bars, nuts, pretzels, etc. This way, I can get rid of plastic bags stuck everywhere in my pantry cabinet which tends to look a bit disorganized.

I think this one here below looks perfect:

See those cute baskets? These can used to store assorted chips, nuts and other items for snack and movie time. I love the jars used to keep assorted biscuits and pretzels. I think, by following this basic organization idea, my pantry would be a lot more organized and it means saving some of your precious time looking for things as everything is now within your reach.

This is it! So, I think it's time to search for those cute jars. :)

Working away from home had taught me a lot of things and one of the best thing that I've learned so far is becoming independent. Here, I couldn't rely on anybody but myself. Good thing that I've found blogging and I would say that it has taken much of my free time now from my full time job. Having said that, I think that my best companion now away from home is my laptop. This is the first thing that I open each time that I woke up. It's also the same thing that would give me company for the rest of the hours left to me prior to going back to work. It's a good thing that I have a reliable anti virus software to protect my files from being harmed. I am currently using Avira premium from softwaresecuritysolutions.com . I'm using this for almost 3 years now and it never fails me. I'm loving my laptop a lot. I'd been using it for almost 3 years now and I never had a problem with it except for the keyboard as some keys are not functioning, so I just decided to use an external keyboard. But apart from that problem, it serves me pretty well. It's quite hard not having a reliable laptop and anti virus software as I am staying in a suburb and no computer repair shops are available here. So, it's really a blessing that mine is functioning quite well. If not for this reliable companion, I think I might have gotten really bored. Thanks to blogging!

For peace of mind, many people choose to change the locks when moving into a new home. With a wide range of styles of the market, choosing the right set for your home can be confusing. It pays to get it right though, if your front door attracts the interest of burglars, having the right lock can make the difference between success and failure.

Nightlatch

A nightlatch is a unit mounted onto the door instead of inside it. They are common on older homes and are relatively simple to install. While they offer added security, you should not rely on them, a single fixing point, not properly integrated with the frame, is easy to force open.

Mortice Lock

Most common on timber doors, a mortice lock is a unit

that has to be morticed into the edge. These come in two basic designs, sashlock and deadlock. A deadlock has a single bolt, which can only be turned with a key. Found on front doors, these are normally combined with a nightlatch. Sashlocks are typically used on back doors, these have a key operated bolt, combined with a latch and handle.

Although relatively secure and convenient, changing a mortice lock is difficult. The lock and fixings are held together in one unit, which has to be replaced entirely when the locks are changed. They are also not very robust, having all the fixings within a few inches of each other does not give them much strength.

If you are looking to fit a new mortice lock, opt for a 5 lever design and combine it with a kick bolt to help the door withstand a forced entry.

Multi Point Locking System

Most modern PVC and composite doors are fitted with a multi-point locking system that operates with a single key. These offer the best compromise of security, convenience and versatility. Fixing points along the length of the door make it difficult to open by force. Having all these attached to one lock, however, means they can be opened and closed quickly.

The fixings themselves are an integral part of the door, so will need a qualified technician to change. The lock mechanism, however, is fitted within a single cylinder, which can be replaced easily, making this system highly adaptable.

When moving into a new home, this system allows to change how accessible the door is. A single cylinder means the door can only be unlocked from one side. Whereas a double cylinder can be accessed from both sides, and can be fitted with a thumbturn, so the inside can be operated without a key.

A main drawback with cylinders is that some models can be snapped by burglars with the right tools, so whatever type you choose, make sure it is built to an anti-snap design.

Most insurance companies recommend that you change your locks everytime you move. Taking the right steps to securing your home will qualify you for discounted premiums.
