USB Mouse Polling Rate and Linux Mint

I wanted to change the usb mouse polling rate in my Linux Mint system from the default value (125Hz) to something higher that my mouse would still support (500Hz).

I only had to edit /etc/modules file, adding these two lines:

-r usbhid
usbhid mousepoll=2

Save and reboot!

It is '2' (ms) in my case because I wanted to set it to 500Hz. Other common values are:

Hz	ms
1000	1
500	2
250	4
125	8
100	10

As you can see, the higher is the frequency at which the usb port communicates, the lower is the response time (orly?).

I found many (fake) solutions on Google for this problem, none of them worked for me.
It was not me typing the wrong password, or wrong domain, resource, port, server or whatever.

I only had to generate a password for Pidgin app on facebook.

Some pictures will make it more clear:

Go to Account Settings.

The Security Settings page.

The tooltip if you mouse-over Learn more. Now click Generate app passwords.

I didn't make any test, but I think this should be the same one you put as Resource in Pidgin's settings.

Copy the password and Paste it into your Pidgin password's field. Probably you also want to save it because there's no way to read the password again.

From now on, you have to use this generated password to join Facebook chat from Pidgin.
Now I don't get that user@chat.facebook.com/Pidgin disabled not authorized error anymore. :)

You tried running it into the terminal and some errors similar to these appeared?

Maybe you're trying to run Skype with the wrong libraries' version (64 bit instead of 32 bit).

I solved with this little script:

#!/bin/bash
export GTK_PATH=/usr/lib32/gtk-2.0
skype

Skype on Debian, libasound and libgthread errors

You just installed Debian (6.0.4 Squeeze 64 bit, in my case) and you can't launch Skype?

I got this error:

./skype: error while loading shared libraries: libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

To solve this issue I got to install ia32-libs.

Then I got also this:

./skype: error while loading shared libraries: libgthread-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

This time ia32-libs-gtk was missing.

All in one:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk

Have a nice Skype-ing :D

Mangler on Debian 6 Squeeze 64 bit

Mangler is the best Ventrilo client I've found for Linux.

Download the latest version of the source code from here: http://www.mangler.org/download/

Extract the content into a folder and to compile it you must have these packages installed:

apt-get install build-essential libgsm1-dev libspeex-dev libx11-dev libxi-dev libgtk2.0-dev libgtkmm-2.4-dev

Then you can compile it:

./configure
make

you can now use checkinstall (as root) to install it like a normal .deb package.

If you get an error like this:

mangler: error while loading shared libraries: libventrilo3.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Just make sure you run ldconfig (as root).

Firefox on Debian Squeeze 64 bit

Download the latest version from here: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/latest/linux-x86_64/
(download the language you prefer).

Extract the archive content (it's a folder named firefox), then move it to /opt/ like this:

tar -xvjf firefox-12.0.tar.bz2

mv firefox /opt/

(you need root privileges to copy into /opt/)

Now you can try launching Firefox from a terminal.
If you get errors like:

./firefox: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /opt/firefox/libxpcom.so:

libxul.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Couldn't load XPCOM.

then you need to install ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk packages:

apt-get update && apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk

I didn't get any more error :)

Enable Flash Player 64 bit on Chromium ( Debian 64 bit )

I had flash correctly installed and working on all browsers but Chromium-browser :< I had to enable the plugin by going to:

chrome://plugins

(put this address on your chromium address bar and press Enter)

It is listed as Shockwave Flash, Enable it!

Have fun, flash on chromium browser too :P

Flash Player on Debian Squeeze 64 bit

Even by following the official debian wiki about Flash Player, I wasn't able to see youtube videos on my Debian Squeeze.

I had to download a particular package made for the 64 bit version of Linux distributions. It seems to be a beta version, but it works fine (at least for me, and yes... still high cpu usage .-. Flash keeps sucking on linux).

Here you can find the tar.gz file: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer11.html

Just download the 64 bit version and extract libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib64/

Long story short:

tar -zxvf flashplayer11_b2_install_lin_64_080811.tar.gz libflashplayer.so

Skype su Debian Squeeze 64 bit

Avete appena installato Debian (nel mio caso Debian 6.0 Squeeze 64 bit) e non riuscite a far andare Skype (nemmeno la static)?

Io ho ricevuto questo errore:

./skype: error while loading shared libraries: libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Per risolvere ho dovuto installare il pacchetto ia32-libs.

Poi ho ricevuto quest'altro splendido errore:

./skype: error while loading shared libraries: libgthread-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Mancava ancora ia32-libs-gtk.

Insomma... riassumiamo:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk

How to restore Grub after Windows 7 installation

I just installed Windows 7 beta and as usual my Grub installation gone :/ (thanks)
Googling a bit... i read some topics in ubuntuforums.org about this problem and then i decided to make a how to about restoring grub correctly (tested, it works).

1. Boot Ubuntu from a Live cd (i used Ubuntu 7.04 disc, it worked anyway :p )
2. Open a terminal window and put these commands:
sudo grub
root (hd0,0) <---- Here you have to put the partition where your Ubuntu is installed, my Ubuntu partition is sda1 so it's hd0,0 for grub (if sda2, then hd0,1, etc)
setup (hd0) <---- The hard drive where you are installing Grub
quit

Someone at this point talk about changing grub menu list...updating it with Windows 7 option... but it's not needed.
I always had dual-boot with Ubuntu and Windows XP, and the option i used to boot Windows XP this time works for both Windows versions. I explain:
now i've istalled in my HD: Ubuntu, Windows XP and Windows 7. When i wanna boot WinXP or Win7, i just select the usual option (the one called Windows, in my menu.lst) cause it will show me what of two Microsoft's OS i wanna boot :)

Then this is my menu.lst:

tcl-tls (non più tcltls) per aMSN su Ubuntu 8.10

Upgradando da Hardy a Intrepid mi sono accorto che in Synaptic il pacchetto tcltls è stato rimosso. Ho notato però l'esistenza di un nuovo pacchetto parecchio simile: tcl-tls
aMSN necessita di questa libreria per connettersi via SSL.
Installate tcl-tls e riavrete aMSN funzionante :)

Questo post è strettamente legato al vecchio Far trovare TLS ad Amsn per l'autenticazione SSL su Ubuntu Gutsy. Perciò se non si capisce questo post, leggetevi anche il vecchio e avrete le idee più chiare!

Se Firefox 3 non è completamente compatibile con Gmail, Picasa, ecc?

Con Firefox 3 ho avuto il seguente problema quando provavo ad aprire Gmail, Picasa Web, e altri:

Per usare al meglio il servizio Gmail utilizza un browser interamente supportato.

Ho risolto così facendo:

Nella barra dell'indirizzo scrivete about:config e date Invio, così aprirete le impostazioni del vostro browser;
in Filtro scrivete general.useragent
in ognuna delle opzioncine rimaste, premete col destro quelle modificate (in grassetto) e selezionate Azzera.

Questo mi ha tolto il problema nel mio bel browser!

Avete il fastidioso problema che aMSN non vi lampeggia nella barra in basso quando qualcuno vi scrive??? Risolvete così:

rm /usr/share/amsn/utils/linux/linflash/flash.so

Adesso almeno vi dirà [Nuovo messaggio] quando qualcuno vi scrive...
Ovviamente se avete la versione SVN e come me non la compilate in /usr... ma la tenete nella home... andate nella cartella giusta e rimuovete il file :)

Il problema non sembra legato ad aMSN, a quanto pare è un bug di Metacity...

AGGIORNAMENTO del 12 Agosto 2008: ho trovato una soluzione migliore e ne ho scritto qui. Se non funziona, proseguite con la lettura dell'articolo qui sotto.

Recentemente, dopo aver installato certi aggiornamenti su Ubuntu Hardy, avevo l'errore di cui nel titolo...

Per usare al meglio il servizio Gmail utilizza un browser interamente supportato.

Alla fine cliccando il link Ulteriori informazioni (accanto all'errore stesso :P ma l'ho fatto dopo giorni XD) ho trovato un link utile per bypassare il check che fa Gmail sul browser. Se non riuscite ad aprire Gmail ma siete sicuri che il vostro browser sia pienamente supportato da quest'ultimo (come nel mio caso con Firefox 3 beta 5) basta usare questo link:

http://mail.google.com/mail?nocheckbrowser

Segnalibri di Google su Firefox 3: Deng Google Bookmarks

Per sincronizzare i miei segnalibri di Google Bookmarks con il mio browser ho sempre usato Firefox Google Bookmarks.

Dopo l'upgrade da Gutsy a Hardy, questa estensione ha smesso di funzionare e ancora non ci sono aggiornamenti a riguardo.

Ho quindi cercato un'alternativa, e l'ho trovata fortunatamente :)

Dopo aver installato l'addon e riavviato Firefox, dovrete aggiungere il tastino per usare Deng Google Bookmarks.

Svuotare il cestino su Hardy

Avevo una cartella nel cestino, da giorni, che non riuscivo a cancellare (non ne avevo i permessi a quanto pare :/ ).

La vecchia maniera (sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash) non funziona più a quanto pare, perciò ho dovuto dare questi due comandi:

sudo rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash/info/
sudo rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash/files/

p7zip per decomprimere i file .7z con file-roller su Ubuntu

Ho provato ad aprire un file .7z con file-roller ma senza successo, questo perché file-roller ha bisogno di un altro programma per poterlo aprire:

sudo aptitude install p7zip p7zip-full

Ora file-roller vi permetterà di gestire i file .7z :)

Praticamente Synaptic propone p7zip e p7zip-full come pacchetti raccomandati per file-roller e non li installa di default.

0c45:6028 Microdia, Sitecom Easycam VP-003, gspca su Ubuntu

Questo è un post che rappresenta a pieno il mio blog, cioè un blocco note personale XD

M'è capitato spesso di avere problemi con la luminosità della webcam (Sitecom Easycam VP-003 nel mio caso, ma avendo fatto tipo 100 ricerche su google sull'argomento ho potuto notare che il problema è comune a cam con chipset simili e non), anche settandola al massimo (su aMSN per esempio, c'è il tastino per configurare un paio di impostazioni della cam).

Oggi ho voluto cercare una soluzione, fortunatamente ne sono uscito fuori.

linko questo (su google si trovano guide simili a bizzeffe) che è italiano e chiaro... senza compilate manuali e altre cagate che su Hardy (si dalla Tribe 4 ho upgradato a Hardy) non mi servono (grazie MadMoose).

Programmi utili per testare la webcam:

sudo aptitude install camorama xawtv cheese

Altri comandi per testare (con mplayer):

mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l:device=/dev/video0:width=640:height=480

Devo però far notare che con i programmi fin'ora citati, di default l'immagine è scura. E su Cheese rimane scura perché non ho alcun settaggio che mi permette di alzare la luminosità.
Però su aMSN il problema scompare perché poi basta premere il bottoncino con la chiave inglese e via :) finalmente se metto il cursore della luminosità tutto a destra, vedo bene l'immagine :)

Configurazione mia:
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/options

attenzione: autoexpo=0 lo vedete a capo perché il mio blog è stretto :P in realtà si trova nella stessa riga appena dopo gamma=4 e lo spazio.

se volete confrontarli coi vostri, date un bel:

vi darà i valori all'interno di ogni file, in sequenza per nome (come ve li ho elencati io).

Spero di non aver dimenticato qualcosa di importante... perché se in futuro mi ritrovassi con lo stesso problema, sarebbe una bella rottura andare a trovare nuovamente la soluzione :D

libtcl e libtk 8.5 come predefinite per aMSN

State cercando di compilare aMSN dai sorgenti (o da SVN) ma vi accorgete che il ./configure vi restituisce la versione 8.4 di tcl e tk? Impostate la versione 8.5 come predefinita conq uesto comando:

sudo update-alternatives --config tclsh && sudo update-alternatives --config wish

selezionate l'opzione adatta.

In questo modo, al prossimo ./configure di aMSN, avrete selezionata la versione 8.5 di tcl e tk :)

Ecco perché Pidgin non mi connetteva su MSN

Impossibile autenticare: The e-mail address or password is incorrect.

Pidgin non proverà a riconnettere l'account finché l'errore non sarà corretto dall'utente e l'account riabilitato.

Avete avuto anche voi questo errore ultimamente? Riuscite a connettervi da qualsiasi client tranne Pidgin?
Mi è capitato di avviare Windows XP e Windows Live Messeger. Fatto ciò, infilo la mia password e... sento dei rumorini...i suoni di quando è finito lo spazio e non puoi più mettere altri caratteri.
In sostanza la password è troppo lunga!!!
Pidgin mi legge fino al 16° carattere, se digito più di 16 caratteri nella password, mi da quell'errore!
Se scrivo la password a metà, ecco che mi fa entrare!
In altri client, per esempo aMSN, questo non succede! Probabilmente i caratteri in più vengono ignorati, prendendo in considerazione solo quelli utili. TUtto ciò però è strano, perché sul sito live.com io mi loggo con la password per intero... mah!

Soluzione?
Se volete loggarvi da Pidgin, fermatevi al 16° carattere della vostra password e connettetevi :)

Loading TkCximage failed dopo l'aggiornamento di tk8.5

Oggi Ubuntu mi ha proposto l'aggiornamento del pacchetto tk8.5, e ho accettato...
Vado a lanciare amsn, e giustamente ci doveva essere qualche scocciatura :/

Loading TkCximage failed. This module is needed to run aMSN. Please compile aMsn first, instructions on how to compile are located in the file INSTALL

Vabbe... Google è mio amico, e il blog InTiLinuX altrettanto.

Come risolvere?

gksudo gedit /usr/bin/amsn

modificate la prima riga di codice da:

exec wish $0 $@

exec wish8.5 $0 $@

InTiLinuX si è trovato una riga un po' diversa dalla mia, ma l'importante è che il risultato sia uguale.

aMSN non trova più libtcl8.5? wish: error while loading shared libraries

Oggi ho notato che tra i repository di Ubuntu è stato aggiunto tcl8.5, quindi ho ben pensato di rimuovere ciò che avevo compilato io in precedenza e sostituirlo con quello del repository (mi fido degli impacchettatori di Ubuntu :P anche perché tcl8.5 installato da me da svn si era messa in /tcl8.5, e non in /usr/tcl8.5 o che so io XD)

Apro Synaptic, rimuovo tcl8.5 (lo trovo in Synaptic perché in precedenza ho usato checkinstall) e scelgo di installare la versione proposta dal repository di Ubuntu.

Felice, premo l'iconcina di aMSN, ma niente .-.

Avvio quindi l'applicazione dal terminale e fortunatamente leggo l'errore:

wish: error while loading shared libraries: libtcl8.5.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Come risolvere?
Semplicemente creando un collegamento simbolico al file che aMSN non riesce a trovare!
Il terminale non trova il file libtcl8.5.so, però noi abbiamo un file libtcl8.5.so.0 nella cartella /usr/lib (che cavolo, l'abbiamo appena installato)! Facciamo quindi sto collegamento e non se ne parla più...

cd /usr/lib
sudo ln -sf libtcl8.5.so.0 libtcl8.5.so

The end :D

SpeedSim su Ubuntu con Wine

Provando ad avviare SpeedSim con Wine, ricevevo un errore:

err:module:import_dll Library MSVCP60.dll (which is needed by L"H:\\Scrivania\\SpeedSim_v0.9.8.0b_unicode\\SpeedSim.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"H:\\Scrivania\\SpeedSim_v0.9.8.0b_unicode\\SpeedSim.exe" failed, status c0000135

Per risolvere bisogna scaricarsi il file MSVCP60.dll e metterlo nella cartella apposita:

unzip msvcp60.zip
mv MSVCP60.DLL ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system/

Fatto ciò, non ho ricevuto più alcun errore e il programma funziona :)

Come da titolo mi sono registrato al servizio FeedBurner perché da un po' di tempo vorrei avere un grafico, qualche statistica riguardo il mio blog.
Ho aggiornato il feed, non ho ben capito se coloro che in passato hanno aggiunto il vecchio feed (se esistono ste persone che aggiungono il mio blog XD ) ora devono aggiornarlo col nuovo, o se verranno reindirizzati automaticamente con feedburner.. quindi boh... se mi state leggendo, gradirei avere più informazioni da chi ne sa :D

glc - fraps for linux - how to install glc in Ubuntu

First of all, i accept conseils to make my english (and this post) better :D sorry me! I hope this post doesn't sux too much.

Dear Linux gamers... how many times would you wished to have a linux version of Fraps? Simply to record your stupid or frag actions in game :p or what you want...
For example i'm a Wolfenstein Enemy Territory player, and sometime i like to record something.
Unfortunately Fraps is only for Windows, then a nice finnish programmer rescued me for the 2nd time.
Why 2nd time? Because he's the same author of et-sdl-sound hack for ET, Q3, RTCW, etc... thanks nullkey!

This time, after the famous ALSA hack, he released a good capture tool!

glc, what is it?

glc is an ALSA & OpenGL capture tool for Linux. It consists of a wrapper library which captures stream and a tool for playing or processing captured streams. glc should be able to capture any application that uses ALSA for sound and OpenGL for drawing. It is still a relatively new project but already has a long list of features. Take a look at some example videos and find out how to install it!

Install glc in Ubuntu:
nullkey here teachs how to install glc in Gentoo, and it is good. Then if you are in Gentoo, don't read my blog, but please read his official how-to!
In Ubuntu there are some problems... that nullkey had the patience of explain me in msn.

Attention, the red lines are for 64-bit only system users!

sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib32/libGL.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libasound.so.2 /usr/lib32/libasound.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libXxf86vm.so.1 /usr/lib32/libXxf86vm.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libX11.so.6 /usr/lib32/libX11.so

The 32-bit system users should not need these previous steps.

The next steps are for both architecture:

wget http://nullkey.ath.cx/glc/scripts/glc-build.sh
chmod +x glc-build.sh
./glc-build.sh

Installer downloaded, permissions set correcly and then you launched the installer. Now follow it's questions:

Enter path where glc will be installed.

You can leave it blank;

Enter compiler optimizations.

Same here, but if you have a Core2Duo you can fill:

-march=nocona -O2 -msse3

and press Enter;

Enter linker optimizations.

Leave it blank;

Use git?

git contains the last development version, then not fully stable. Sincerely i decided y and i didn't have any problem. The system is your, choise one :) and press Enter.

Now the installer will download all needed files and will make 4 folders in the position from you had launch it (glc, glc-support, elfhacks, packetstream).

It can also ask for the password, if it isn't in memory.

When finished, it will print Done :).

Now glc is ready to use.

How to use glc?
You can read the official how-to-capture page of glc. Maybe i will write a post someday...for howto use and convert glc streams and play them in mplayer, vlc, etc.

How i use glc:

glc-capture -r 0.7 -o /home/pasquale/out.glc /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/et-sdl-sound

With this command glc will capture with 0.7 of ratio and the final file will be found in my home directory with out.glc as name; the final part of the command is the launcher of ET (then you have to change it if you are capturing from another game)

ATTENTION:
When i tried to capture something in ET... after i exiting from the game i noticed that i didn't capture anything. This problem is presented only in Ubuntu and not in Gentoo (like the symbolic link problems, previously, but this time this problem can be found in any architecture).
For resolve, you have to modify the script et-sdl-sound installed in past. Open the script and edit the line from:

LD_PRELOAD="$TMP_DIR/et-sdl-sound.so" ./$GAME_BIN $*

to:

LD_PRELOAD="${LD_PRELOAD}:$TMP_DIR/et-sdl-sound.so" ./$GAME_BIN $*

After this modify (it is in only 1 line, don't go ahead, my blog isn't large to contain all the line :P ), glc-capture works :P
