Thankful for: Chipotle, Ignorant Jokes, and the Blue Jacket

The countdown for Thanksgiving break is imbedded in many our minds as the holiday approaches us. As we think of the table set with all the great food and surrounded by even greater people, it makes our tummies and hearts happy. We are often most thankful for our food, family, and our health. But as we dig into our food and the meaningful conversation that is to follow the evening, what else should we be thankful for? What should we be thankful for as FFA members and supporters of the most giving industry, agriculture? What experiences should we be thankful for?

Recently, Chipotle announced that several customers had developed E. Coli after eating an item off the restaurant’s menu. My Facebook feed was filled with many in the Ag industry being frankly pleased somehow by this. Personally having never ate at this establishment, I was still shocked by the reaction. We should not be smirking at Chipotle’s unfortunate news. We instead should remind ourselves of how Chipotle is a restaurant with a different ideal to food consumption than many of our own and that is perfectly okay. We as Americans live in a first world country where the option of having the Thanksgiving Day turkey be genetically modified or not is an extremely blessed option to have. We have so many choices when it comes to our food supply, and that is something to be truly thankful for. Which leads me to a greater blessing to be thankful for: diversity.

The diversity we have in our food supply and what we choose is unlike any other country in the 21st century. Not only is it seen in our food supply, but the faces behind it. That’s right, the people who work in this industry all bring important and unique input to the table (no pun

intended, unless you like puns). Be sure and look beyond the basis of the agriculture industry, production agriculture. We are the future of an industry that provides approximately 1 in 5 jobs in the United States. That means we are farmers, economists, journalists, educators, lawmakers, engineers, doctors, salesmen, scientists, and the list goes on. Therefore, it is safe to make the assumption that not all the work in the agriculture industry comes from the typical production agriculture background. These inputs drive us to greater achievements not just as an industry but as a society. How does the diversity in the agriculture industry make you thankful?

Shifting gears, I recently was reminded of how grateful I am for my relationships in FFA. While attending National Convention, a convention of 65,000 people mind you, I ran into numerous fellow members and friends. Some from our association and some not. Friendships that might be separated by miles and time but when put back together are just like they were before. I also was given the opportunity to meet new friends across the nation. How are you thankful for your friendships in FFA?
Going a little farther back in time, I think of when I recognized how thankful I am of my experiences in FFA. This past fall at the State Fair, my teammates and I help set up and run the Wick Building, as well as the livestock shows. On the first night upon arriving at Hutchinson, we decided to help a friend unload their showing equipment. A man seeing what we were doing started a conversation with us, asking the basic questions of who we were, what we were doing at the fair, etc. My teammates and I explained and the question was then asked if any of us were to show this weekend. As we answered it was stated that I was not from a traditional agriculture background, to which the man replied, “Oh you’re a city boy, well the rides are over there in case you’re wondering.”

He laughed at his ignorant joke and I couldn’t help but laugh along with him. I couldn’t help but laugh along with him because I knew how wrong he was. The experiences in FFA haven’t taught me everything about agriculture, but they’ve definitely taught me the importance agriculture holds in my life and how I plan to contribute to the industry in a way that only I can and am able to. This man didn’t know the amount of time, memories, nor energy I and many other nontraditional agriculture members devote to an organization and an industry that gives so much to us. He did serve a great purpose to me, and that was being reminded of the incredible experience and amount of learning I’ve had being an FFA member.

So Kansas FFA, as you pass around the however genetically modified or not modified feast, think of your experiences in FFA leading up to this. I know that I’m grateful for my experiences in the blue jacket, are you?

Carpe Diem

One can often learn a lot about a person by what they like to do with their day; and so I’d like to share a little bit about myself through a day that was not too many moons ago.

My day started with a morning run of 3 miles. I LOVE to run! Running has always been a fun challenge for me. I ran cross country and track in high school, and did several road races over the years. Most recently, I ran the Bill Snyder Half-Marathon back in May.

I also had the opportunity of meeting the man himself, Coach Bill Snyder!

Then, I got ready for the day and had breakfast. I never miss this meal because frankly, who doesn’t like some waffles or eggs & bacon, or my personal favorite–breakfast smoothies!

Next, I went to Topeka and met with some of the Kansas Department of Agriculture and Governor Brownback’s staff for his Ag tour week. From there we flew out to Southwest Kansas (S/O to our SWD FFA members) and toured several aspects of Kansas agriculture. I absolutely loved learning about the dairy farm we went to and the greater potential for cotton in SW Kansas. Educating others about agriculture, like I experienced that day, is what I want to do with my life and is why I’m majoring in Ag Education here at KSU.

On the plane ride back to Topeka, I did what I always do when flying: look at the breathtaking view from above the clouds or the beautiful earth that is far below. I’ve always loved flying, and traveling in general for that matter. I’ve grown up in a military family that like any other has done its fair share of moving from state to state (Iowa, Alabama, New York, Arizona and Kansas in case you were wondering). Traveling has become a part of my life and leaves me wanting to continue on adventures!

Finally, as my day wraps up I usually think about what the next day has in store for me. As I sign into my Netflix to watch my absolute favorite show of all-time, "Friends", I think of my own. Since being elected to serve Kansas FFA in May, it’s been filled with excitement in being given the incredible opportunity to serve Kansas FFA members and work on a team with five other friends that mean more than they’ll probably ever know. Our days might seem to drag by and blend together but I guarantee if we take a moment and find the good that is in today, then we will all be able to 'seize the day'.

Love Five Times Over

I had a bit of trouble coming up with a story or topic for this blog. I sat and stared at my computer screen for a long time. I had a case of "writer's block." During my block, I received a Snapchat from my teammate, Bethany. Then, it hit me. My blog could be all about my teammates! Each one has made an enormous impact on my life, and with Convention slowly approaching, I thought that it was only appropriate to tell you all about these 5 individuals!

After being elected to serve as State Officers, we decided to go to dinner as a team. We all sat around the table telling stories about our lives and how excited we were to create even more memories with Kansas FFA members. We laughed and relaxed. After a rather large dessert, we made our way to the city park, and proceeded to play “tag” until it was dark and we couldn’t breathe. It was a great bonding experience to say the least.

Today, we are still a team that really enjoys a nice game of “tag” every now and again, but we have grown together in a way that is difficult to describe. We’ve gone through trainings, conferences and college together. We have grown as individuals too, which has been interesting to watch. Each one of us has experienced some sort of “light bulb” moment where everything just clicks, and we are reminded of our purpose. We truly care for one another, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

For me, my teammates are my rocks. They hold me together. They’ve seen me cry, listened as I poured out my heart and have made me laugh until I couldn’t take it anymore. What’s great is that each one serves as a different type of friend to me.

Taylor and Bethany are the two I call for anything. I have called them before just to hear their voices when I was feeling lonely. I call when I need a new or creative idea. Sometimes I call just to catch up. They are my #1 advice providers and always are ready to listen. They keep me grounded. Additionally, they are always up for an adventure, even at 12:30 in the morning. Walmart or Sonic run anyone?

Nick, Jeff and Kyle are the ones I run to when I need an attitude check. Just a smile from either one of them will brighten my day. I know that when I hang around them long enough, something will happen that will be some sort of an “iconic moment” in our friend history. The next time you see Kyle, ask him about his skateboard incident.

I cherish the times that my teammates and I are together. They make me a better person. They allow others to shine as well. Kyle, Taylor, Bethany, Nick and Jeff, thank you for being my friends, adventurers, motivators and amazing human beings. I thank God for you every day.

In our lives, we will have people that come and go with time, but when we find those incredible ones that allow us to be the best version of ourselves, we find true, everlasting friendship. Hold onto those people. They will create such great memories and happiness with everyone they come in contact with. I ask that you love those people with your whole heart so that you may receive love in return.

So You Think You Can't Dance

Dancing: it's really never been my thing. I can swing my limbs around as much as I want, but I guess that doesn't really count. During those awkward middle and high school dances, I was a really big fan of fist pumping, jumping up and down and line dances (mainly because I didn't have to make up the moves). I also thoroughly enjoy "dancing" ALONE in my dorm room when my roommate isn't there to witness it. In any case, showing the public my "moves" just isn't something I like to do...ever.

Recently, I had the absolutely incredible opportunity to travel to South Africa for the International Leadership Seminar for State Officers. There were about 75 of us state officers, all hailing from various parts of the United States. The fantastic part about traveling with these 74 people was that we all are weirdoes. Not kidding. It's great. You never get judged for how weird you truly are because everyone understands. It was a mutual thing. Anyway, these people were all amazing human beings, and I miss all of them like crazy.

While in South Africa, we traveled to many different farms to witness the varying agricultural practices, immersed ourselves in the culture and ultimately learned a lot. There was one day where we traveled to Soweto (Southwestern Township) to tour the community and its attractions. We first stopped to eat lunch at Chez Alina Restaurant. This restaurant is locally owned, and it boasts some pretty tasty food.

As our meal was winding down, we began to slowly make our way outside to play with some adorable little children. When everyone had made it outside, three street dancers stood in the middle of the street, and began performing for all of us. A couple of little dancers joined throughout the performance as well. Two drummers provided the beat, and suddenly, the energy increased. All of us bystanders stood cheering and clapping. I stood towards the front of the group tapping my foot along with the beat. One of the dancers broke away from his fellow dancing partners and began to walk in my general direction. Realizing what was about to happen, a million different thoughts raced through my mind.

“Oh my dear Lord. Avoid eye contact. Someone from this group is going to have to dance with him. Please pick anyone else but me. Oh no. He’s getting closer. Please not me, not me, not me, not me…”

The dancer then extended his hand, inviting me to join the performance. I grabbed his hand, and he led me to the stage (the street).

“I am going to have to dance in front of all of these people. These dancers are extremely talented, and all I know how to do is the Cupid Shuffle. Alright, you’re going to have to summon all of the confidence you can and do this.”

My adrenaline was pumping as I tried to mimic the dancers movements.

“Ok, this isn’t so bad. This is fun. No one is booing me. You can do this. Just watch what he’s doing. Keep moving.”

After a series of movements, the dancer squatted to the ground and invited me to try it out for myself. Not being quite ready yet, I asked if he could show me a few more moves. He agreed, and we began the process again.

“Dude. This is a blast. You should dance like this all of the time!”

He then squatted down for a second time, and I knew that I would be performing all by myself. I bowed my head, giving myself just another second to breathe and gather my confidence, and jumped up with as much enthusiasm as I could muster. I tried to copy as many moves as my dancing partner had shown me, while also trying to do it halfway decently.

“Move your hands. Move your legs. Kick. Sit down when you're done.”

After finishing my little routine, I sat down on the ground, and looked at my partner. He had a toothy grin on his face, and that was all I needed. He shook my hand, and I retreated back to the group with the same toothy grin on my face. Another group member, Sydney from Ohio, had the chance to dance with them as well. I could tell by the look on her face that she loved it too.

After some “cool down” and “reflection” time, I realized one key lesson that I learned from this dancing experience. Even though I was terrified, I stepped, or rather danced out of my comfort zone. If I declined his outstretched hand, I would not have the memory from that day that I do. I felt confident and joyful in those brief moments. Those are the moments that I will cherish forever.

I hope you can seize those moments that require you to step, skip, dance, hop, jump, fly, etc. out of your comfort zone. You may be unsure at first, but once you find the joy, you can fully immerse yourself in the moment. Your comfort zone can always use a little work. J

Blessed Reminders

As I stare at my to-do list, I feel overwhelmed. It seems as though there is not enough time in the day to accomplish even the daily "routine" activities. Then, out of nowhere, three more items come to mind, and become apart of the to-do list. The list seems never-ending, and I do not even know where to start. I look at the clock, and try to schedule each item for a different time in the day. I feel anxious, but hopeful. I can get this all done...right?

For the past couple of months, I have created many (so many) to-do lists in the optimistic attempt to decrease my stress level while tackling various items. These to-do lists range in length, but always seem to have a thorough compilation of schoolwork, FFA duties and necessary tasks to keep my life in order, like laundry. Even with these to-do lists, I face stress and worry. Am I doing enough? Am I doing too much? Should I sleep more/less? Lots of "what ifs" cross my mind, and pretty soon, I turn into a tense version of myself, and I do not like it.

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to travel from Manhattan to Hill City, Kansas. Hill City is where I attended high school and was a member of the FFA chapter. The Hill City FFA Chapter was conducting their Joint Alumni Meeting, and invited me to present on
my experiences as a state officer and the International Leadership Seminar for State Officers that I am attending in January. When I stepped inside of the school, I was greeted by hugs and "Hello's" from alumni, community members, parents and members. I was almost taken back by the warmth and love. I just smiled and prayed that I would not jumble all of the words trying to escape from my mouth. Sometimes, words are hard.

Throughout the entire night, I was reminded of the support system that I still have at home. My immediate family was present, but I slowly began to realize that my extended "family" was there as well. Every single person in the cafeteria (where the meeting was held) made me feel welcomed, happy and relaxed; something I had not felt in a while. When the meeting ended, all I wanted to do was stick around an bask in the joyful environment that was created.

The moral of my story is this:
When you feel anxious, stressed or your to-do list grows to an immeasurable length, remember that you can turn to the ones that love you the most. When you spend just a little bit of time with them, your worries do not seem so big, and you are able to relax and smile. You realize that you are so incredibly blessed. In fact, you are just too blessed to be stressed.

Eyes Wide Open

It seems hard to believe that a month ago, the 2014 Kansas State Fair was in full swing! There were families touring the exhibits, carnival rides providing lots of adrenaline rushes and my personal favorite, people showing their animals.

My fellow officers and I traveled to Hutchinson to assist with the Swine, Sheep, Goat and Beef Barns. Taylor was in the Goat Barn, Nick was in Sheep Barn, Jeff and Bethany were in the Beef Barn and Kyle and I were in the Swine Barn. That’s right. Kyle and I were in the Swine Barn.

Here is a little background information about me: I never showed any animals. I had the opportunity, but I never seized it.

I would like to think that Kyle is a pig guy. He showed them, raised them and I will also say that he really does love them. Don’t tell him I told you that! I on the other hand, have little to no experience with pigs. Needless to say, I was just a little nervous when I found out my barn assignment. Kyle also deserves a big “shout-out” for keeping me calm and collected during the walk to the barn.

When we arrived at the barn, Kyle and I were given separate tasks to accomplish. My first task was nothing too “earth-shattering.” I was in charge of registering the 4-H/FFA members and their animals for the showmanship competition. Later the same night, Showmanship began, and I was given another task. I was to write down the numbers of the placers, and return them to the announcer. Accomplishing this task meant that I was required to physically be in the show arena with the members showing their pigs. After about ten minutes of trying not to be in the way, I relaxed and was able to truly see the competition. The intensity and determination was written all over the members’ faces. Their pigs were very skilled, and were able to move throughout the show arena with ease.

For the next couple of days, I assisted in the show arena by collecting event cards from each member, writing their corresponding numbers down and presenting ribbons to those who were in the top ten. I absolutely loved these jobs. I found myself just wanting to “hang-out” in the show arena with the pigs at all times. I was so impressed by the members and their care for the animals. I remember witnessing one girl squatting down and kissing her pig multiple times because she had just won. In the short time that I was able to assist, I gained a new respect for the people that show and their animals.

I want to end this post with a simple “thank you,” and a challenge.

Thank you to those of you that raise animals, show them and care for them. My eyes were opened to the entirety of the hard work, dedication and responsibility it takes to own an animal in general. I learned so much, and I have you all to thank for that. The memories I made while in those barns will stick with me forever.

My challenge to those of you reading this is to always keep an open mind. When you do this, new information will present itself to you in ways you never thought possible. Trust me on this one.

The Servant Heart

Servant leadership; a term that I have heard quite a bit throughout my time in FFA. I remember being asked how I demonstrated servant leadership in one of my chapter officer interviews. I was taken back by the question. At the time, I was not so sure on the exact definition of what "servant leadership" truly was. How was I supposed to answer the question? Well, my answer consisted of a story when I helped serve at a luncheon at my church. I thought that it was a pretty good answer for a question that I was not 100% on! However, I later learned what "servant leadership" really was, and how I could apply it to my daily life.

Robert K. Greenleaf put the modern servant leadership movement into motion with his 1970 publication of his essay, The Servant Leader. He defined the "servant leader" as follows:

"The servant-leader is servant first...It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions...The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature." He then goes on to say...

"The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people's highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?"

After my interview, Mr. Lyder (our Advisor) told a few of us interviewees what a "servant leader" really was. Essentially, he informed us that a servant leader puts others first. Their desire is to assist others in growing as individuals and leaders. The knowledge that I gained from Mr. Lyder directly corresponds with Robert K. Greenleaf's essay. Something that has stuck with me from what I have learned about servant leadership is to serve with your whole heart. Nothing else.

As a State Officer this year, I have challenged myself to make sure that this journey does not become about me, and that the people around me are my top priority. I am confident that when I serve with my whole heart, everything else will fall into place. My challenge to you, the reader, is this:

1. Strive daily to be a servant leader by putting others first.

2. Smile every day. When you present a happy self, others will follow!

3. Develop a positive attitude. Life is better when you are optimistic!

4. When life seems difficult, PRAY!

5. Turn to others when you are feeling down.

6. Live every moment to the fullest!

7. SERVE WITH YOUR WHOLE HEART!

Agricultural Education Teachers: My CTE Superheroes

As I saw them walk into the funeral home my heavy heart lifted, it was one of those moments in the midst of grief that I will remember forever. You see my dad is an agricultural education teacher, and as some of his students walked into the funeral home wearing their blue corduroy jackets and official dress, I couldn't help but smile and take pride in the actions of members in an organization that I have been part of. This action brightened my day, and it is one of the first things that comes to mind when I think of the relationships ag. teachers have with their students.

I had the unique experience of growing up with several ag. teachers in my life. Mr. Lierz at Jackson Heights High School was my ag. teacher. My dad, who teaches agricultural education at Rock Creek Junior and Senior High School, was my second ag. teacher, and my grandfather even taught vocational agriculture back in the day.

Among each of these ag. teachers who played a significant role in my life as well as the agricultural educators that I continue to meet, I see some common traits. These special people are not just teachers who educate others about agriculture; they are also connectors who help students connect other skills they have learned in school with “real life” application. These special people are not just agriculture educators; they are life educators. They are in the unique position where they can let students know hats will be taken off when you enter a building as a sign of respect, and they can let students know the importance of a firm handshake and eye contact when meeting new people. These special people are not just “paid professionals” from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm; they are community volunteers oftentimes from 4:00 pm to 8:00 am.

Most importantly though these special people are not just teachers and role models; they are people who truly care and get to know students. They work with students who love school and those who don't. Furthermore, they work with students who are involved in every activity taking place at the school, and students who have their one passion in agriculture education and FFA. These special people are the ones who can take well behaved students and not so well behaved students on a school trip and be assured that there will not be any problems. In addition, these teachers are the ones who can go beyond school and truly see what students are like on long trips with lots of sleep, with little sleep, with lots of sugar and caffeine, and with very little sugar and caffeine.

My dad, like many ag. teachers, knows his students so well that when my grandfather passed away this last fall, his students drove 60 miles to stand in their blue corduroy jackets at the funeral of a man they barely knew because he taught my dad right. My grandfather taught their ag. teacher, “People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

The relationship and teaching an ag. teacher provides goes so much deeper than just the typical knowledge that a student gains from being part of a class or an organization.

For this reason my CTE Superheroes are agriculture education teachers like my dad!!

Leadership: A Lesson from the Geese

Have you ever tried to define leadership?

There have been times in my life when I thought that I could define leadership pretty well, or I could point out an example of a leader. I was very shocked then when my definition of leadership was turned completely around during this last semester. It all started something like this…

I was working on a timed group project with a group of classmates. When the facilitator instructed us to begin, my group took off and raced about trying to finish our task quickly. It was fantastic that there were a bunch of leaders in my group, but as we continued to go on with our task this turned out to be a bit of a problem. Whenever one leader would try to speak, five other leaders would either be talking at the same time or immediately agreeing or disagreeing with what the first leader said. At the end of our allotted time, my group had failed miserably. We did finish our task, but we might as well have hired preschool students to create the finished product that we came up with.

Upon reflecting on this experience I realized that even though we had a group of tremendous leaders, we failed because no one was willing to follow. It was like the quote, “A leader without true followers, is simply going on a walk.” Instead of following the leader, we had created a skirmish line that couldn’t decide where we were going. Following this reflection my group had the opportunity to redo our project, but it took us twice as long to tear down, start over, and finish our project. Throughout the rest of the semester we worked on being good leaders and good followers, and we were able to improve in this area quite a bit and accomplish even bigger projects than our first one was.

Due to this experience my definition of leadership totally changed. As a flock of geese flew overhead one day, I realized that my definition of a leader was: being the front goose leading the rest of the flock. My definition changed then to what geese already knew about leadership.

When geese fly overhead they seem to be changing positions all the time. After flying in the front for a while, the lead goose will drop back into formation and another goose will take their place. When a goose is rested up and strong they lead the flock, but when another goose is rested up and ready to lead, it is their turn. When a goose drops back into formation it doesn’t just quit flying. They keep flying and refine their strengths for the next time they get to lead, and while they are doing this in the midst of the flock, there are other geese flying behind them. Even if a goose is in the middle of the flock and following the lead goose, the other geese can follow the middle goose.

This is my definition of leadership: being willing to lead when your strengths are needed and being willing to follow when someone else has a strength that is needed.

Or simply put my definition of leadership is: Lead like a goose!

Brian Tracy encourages us to, “Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position.” - How can we help lead our FFA chapters even if we might not necessarily be the lead goose?

Kansas Farmer

“Cody, you're a Missouri Hillbilly,” my grandpa said.

I was visiting my mother's family in Missouri, and my grandpa reasoned that because my mom grew up in Missouri, I was a Missouri Hillbilly. I thought about this just briefly before responding. “No Grandpa, I'm a Kansas Farmer!” This “argument” went on until I was about to leave my grandparent's that night. My grandpa and I compromised. We decided that whenever I crossed the Missouri River I became a Missouri Hillbilly for the time that I was in Missouri, but whenever my family crossed back into Kansas, I became a Kansas Farmer for the time I was there.

That night as a four year old kid, I stayed awake until about midnight when my family crossed the Missouri river again, and I became a Kansas Farmer!

As I four year old I was excited to become a Kansas Farmer. I found my drive and inspiration for becoming a Kansas Farmer by watching my grandfather. I was always excited to help Grandpa feed cows, start combining corn, or run the skid steer. As I got older there was always a piece of me that held onto the dream of following my Grandpa and becoming a Kansas Farmer. I was inspired to be like my grandfather, a hardworking man who wouldn't always say a lot, but who spoke more with his actions than many people can say in a lifetime of words. I was inspired to be like my grandfather who without hesitating would let his grandsons borrow his mower when theirs was broken, even though there was a good chance his mower would need repairs when they were done with it. I was inspired to be like my grandfather who served his family and friends and would drop whatever he was doing in a heartbeat to do so.

That's What I Want To Be Part Of...

There has always been something about agriculture and rural life that I loved and wanted to be part of. I am inspired by the the way life on a farm teaches people the values of hard work and never giving up, and that's what I want to be part of. I am inspired by the way people in a rural community care for each other, and that's what I want to be part of. I am inspired by the spirit that allows a neighbor to drive just a couple minutes to get to your house, but take an hour to get back home. That is what I want to be part of. I am inspired by the space children have to run around, grow, and learn values, and that is what I want to be part of. I am inspired by the faith it takes to plant a seed in the ground and know that it will come up and you will be taken care of, and that is what I want to be part of. I am inspired by FFA and the way it challenges members to ignite their premier leadership, personal growth, and career success; that is what I want to be part of.

I really enjoy reading the book With You All The Way by Max Lucado.

In this book a prince sets up a quest for three knights who want to marry a princess. The knights have to prove that they are worthy by traveling through a dreadful forest and making it to the king's castle. This forest is dark, dreary, and filled with hopenots, creatures who make traveling through the forest miserable. The strongest knight asks if they can take anyone with them, to which the prince responds that they may take one companion with them. The fastest knight asks how they will find their way through the forest. The prince pulls out a flute, plays a song, and explains that the king will play the exact same song three times a day and this will help lead the knights to the king's castle. The wisest knight asks if the king and the prince will play the exact same song and if their flutes are identical. The prince replies that the songs are the same and the king and the prince play identical flutes. The next day the knights and their companions set off into the forest. After a great deal of time passes the servants at the king's castle see two men come walking out of the forest, so they clean them up and have a grand feast that night. During the feast the king plays his song one last time, and … the wisest knight walks into the room. The wisest knight explains that their trip was difficult. The hopenots stole their horses, but they kept going. The hopenots attacked them, but they fought back. The trickiest thing the hopenots did though, was whenever the king played his song, hundreds of hopenots would mimic it on their own flutes. The wisest knight explained that he made it through the forest because he chose the right companion. The wisest knight made it through the forest with … the prince by his side. This way he could always hear the kings song because it was with him all the way.

Just like these three knights we often set off on quests of many different types, and just like these knights we often run into dreadful hopenots who steal our horses, attack us, and mimic the song telling us which way to go. In the moments when we encounter these dreadful places in the forest it is very important that we have the right companions traveling with us.

Throughout these last 19 years of my life I have traveled life's forest with some amazing companions and received incredible support from them. I have been able to walk alongside my Savior, family, friends, neighbors, ministers, teachers, and countless other people.

Throughout this next year I am looking forward to the quest I have set out on as a State FFA Officer, and continuing to travel with many of my old companions as well as new ones, including my teammates and FFA members across the state of Kansas.

Man on the Moon

Lately I have had the opportunity to travel a lot and it just so happens I have spent some time here and there on the road after dark. Recently, as I was driving back to Manhattan one evening, I noticed the full moon in the sky and thought about how beautiful it is. With my mind wondering off, like it does best, I begin to think about Neil Armstrong being the first man to step foot on the moon. What an honor this must have been for him. The moon that we see in the sky every single night, he was able to leave his footprints on. Although others have left theirs as well, he was the first, the first person in the world to step onto the moon. How incredible that day in July of 1969 must have been!

Neil Armstrong was a pioneer. He represented the entire human race. The really interesting thing is not that he was the first to reach a destination or he got the opportunity to represent millions of people, but instead, how he represented. When he landed on the moon there were many things he could have said and did. He could have said, “This step is for the world and this giant leap is for Neil.” He also could have ran around doing flips and cartwheels and then said, “Oh and by the way, this step is for man.” However he did none of that. In his firsts steps he said, “One small step for man and one giant leap for mankind.” The fact that he used his first steps for the symbolism he created, shows how thankful and honored he was. With the words chosen, he showed selflessness. It was incredibly humble of him to credit everyone and not keep all the glory for himself. The way that Neil Armstrong represented all of mankind on that day truly was admirable.

Thinking of this, it is easy to reflect back on our own lives and ask ourselves a few questions. How are we representing? Are my words and actions pleasing and admirable to others? If I was in Neil Armstrong’s shoes, what would my words have been? You see, everyone represents something. The real question is, are we representing in a noble way; one that is humble and honorable? If you would like to join me in setting a new goal, it is to represent the way Neil Armstrong did. He was a very respectable man and there is a good lesson to be learned from him.

Don't Fight the Bottle

For the last six weeks, I have had the opportunity to work and the KSU Dairy Unit and I absolutely love it. Being outside, working with cows makes me feel alive in some strange way. I spend a lot of my time there taking care of the calves, which is more work than it seems. Each day you have to pick up their feed buckets, record how much they ate, determine what to feed them that day, wash their buckets and then put them back out to each calf. Twice a day we bottle feed them and every other day we put fresh hay in each of their individual hutches.

A couple days ago I was working with one of the new born calves, trying to teach it how to drink from a bottle, when I realized that it is A LOT of work to make sure these small animals grow up healthy. It takes so much time devoted by workers and more patients than you think you have when that baby calf is pushing against you and fighting the bottle. This is kind of embarrassing, but that day I was incredibly frustrated and I started to yell at the calf. I said, “Quit fighting me! Don’t you know that you need this and it is going to help you!”

In that very instance I had a thought. In a way, we are all just baby calves. We all have workers that invest in us and devote so much of their time to us. Why? To make sure that we, the small animals, grow up “healthy.” So many times we fight the person that is trying to teach us or give us something we need. I don’t know why this is our immediate reaction, maybe it is just our nature. What I do know is if those calves didn’t get that milk every day, they wouldn’t be able to fully grow up into what they can be.

As we grow older we will always have someone investing in us. It may not be in the same way or at the same rate, but we will have someone. My challenge to you is next time you have a parent, advisor, friend, teacher, coach or mentor listen to you and give you advice, don’t immediately shut them down, but instead keep an open mind and thank them for all they do for you. Believe it or not, there are more people than you think out there that want to see you succeed. Be thankful that you have them and always think twice before you fight the bottle.

Are Chameleons bad?

Over Christmas break I spent a lot of time with one of my really good friends as we caught up on each other’s lives. After telling me new things in his life, I told him stories from school, new friends I made and different programs I was involved in. We then started talking about my future plans, which is not my favorite subject for the time being. You see, I have been having a lot of trouble with making decisions lately. When I am faced with a choice I like to take all things into account and one aspect that really has a tremendous amount of pull is my relationships with other people. So, as I am telling my friend about two awesome opportunities I have to choose between, I am also expressing my mixed feelings. The majority of these mixed feelings come from how my relationships with close friends will change based on my decision. As we are deep into this conversation and my stress level is at an all-time high, my friend stops me and says, “Kayla, the reason you are having so much trouble with this decision is because you have such a wide variety of friends and that is because you have multiple personalities. You are a chameleon and you change with the group of people you are around.” Ok just to give you some insight, the decision I have to make involves me doing two COMPLETELY different things. Therefore, the types of people my decision will affect are from opposite ends of the spectrum. So my friend had a point. He is right when he says I have a wide variety of friends and he’s right when he says that I change around different people. As much as I hate to admit it, I am a chameleon, but is that necessarily a bad thing? I think chameleons get such a bad reputation when really it just might be a good thing. I mean, who decided it was a bad thing to switch your topic of conversation as you switch from friend to friend. Let’s be real. Do you think my very preppy girl friends who love to shop really want to hear about how I got to pull a calf this morning? No. However, that doesn’t mean I won’t throw some ag facts at them every once in a while. What about my guy friends? Do you really think they care about how I bought a new dress last week that was 40% off? That’s probably a no as well. So yes, I may change conversations with friends, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Being that this was one of my closest friends that told me I was a chameleon, I really started putting more thought into this. I looked for other things I changed around certain people. Clothes. Yes I changed my style a little bit, but not because of the people, but more so the settings I was in with those people. I am not going to wear my coveralls and mud boots to work out in, my cut off and shorts to church and my dress out to the farm. That is ridiculous; therefore I have to change out fits around different people. Finally, the last way I realized I change around people is how I act. This is probably the most distinct difference, because around one group of people I am incredibly loud and funny and around another group I am much more reserved. The difference is the type of people I am with. If I am with very professional people having dinner, I am more composed however; if I am with my best friend in private I will cut up, make jokes and be crazy loud. All in all, I have realized that I am a complete chameleon, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I see it as knowing when to have fun and knowing when to do business. I’m not trying to fit in and be parts of groups I don’t belong in. I am just expressing every side of myself. Being a very well-rounded individual I have a lot of different dimensions to me. I don’t come in just one style, topic or demeanor. I am changing and growing on a daily basis which means the complexity of who I am is growing as well. Being myself is so much more than one day, one setting, one outfit or one conversation topic. Therefore I am proud to say that I am a chameleon and I do not see anything wrong with it.

What do you think of when you think of Kansas? The Wizard of Oz? Home on the Range? Kansas State University? Sometimes it is thought of as the Sunflower State, the home of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Amelia Earhart, or the location of the first-ever Pizza Hut. Now all of these are true, but one thing I think of most when I think of Kansas…. is the CRAZY WEATHER! You know how one day it can be 70 degrees outside with the sun shining and the next day it is snowing, or the days when the wind is blowing 30 miles an hour in the morning, but by evening not a single leaf is moving. The weather cannot only be bizarre at times, but it can teach us life lessons as well.

1. Be ready for anything.

The weather in Kansas, as we know, changes constantly; this is the same for our life. One day, everything may be going exactly your way and the next day it may seem like everything has fallen all down hill.

If you are traveling in Kansas, most likely you have an umbrella, an ice scraper, gloves, sandals, and sunscreen all packed to go, because you never know what the weather may turn into. Instead of trying to plan for the ‘expected forecast,’ be prepared for anything and be ready to adapt with whatever is thrown at you throughout life. Like the common phrase goes, expect the unexpected.

2. We all have our rainy days.

Then there are those days that are forecasted as the perfect day, but when you wake up in the morning the rain begins to pour. Things don’t turn out like you want them to, which we often call a bad hair day. These days happen to everyone, don’t fret or worry about it. Another day will come and life will go on. Just as Annie in the musical says, “The sun”ll come out tomorrow; Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow, there’ll be sun!”

3. We must overcome what’s holding us back.

Have you ever been in one of those moments when you’re walking against the wind, but you feel like your moving backwards and not forward? The wind in Kansas is common and is often an obstacle between you and your destination. Although the wind may be a hindrance, it is nothing you cannot compete with. We have to fight through whatever is keeping us from reaching our dreams.

4. Be cautious not to slip.

There are days that it may begin to freeze and ice covers the ground. Sometimes we don’t even see the ice, so we have to be very careful where we step in assurance that we do not fall. In life, every day, we have to make decisions that decide the direction that we go. Each decision is a step that we make; if we take the wrong step, it’s possible we will begin to slip.

5. Be careful not to get caught up in a whirlwind.

One of the scariest parts about Kansas’s weather, for me, are the tornadoes. When I was younger, I hated having to go to the basement in fear that when I returned my home would be gone. These rotating columns whirling at high speeds are very frightening. They can be similar to our daily life when things begin to pile up. More often than not, we get too caught up in trying to finish everything on our to-do list instead of enjoying life for what it is.

It’s pretty remarkable what we can learn from a part of our everyday life. We are often given a forecast to prepare us for the upcoming weather, but even the weather can prepare us for the rest of our life. The highest temperature in Kansas has been 121 degrees and the lowest was a -40. It averages 59 tornadoes a year and once had 30 inches of snow in just one day. Yes, our weather is crazy, but what is really unique are the lessons we can learn.

We Believe

We Believe

A little less than a year ago, I along with my other Wilson teammates, were proudly wearing our purple and white uniforms as we walked into the Gross Coliseum at Fort Hays State University. Just 20 minutes later we were playing in the state basketball tournament against the #1 1A Division 2 ranked team in the state. The bleachers behind us were filled with our fans colored in purple as we took to the court all that we had done in preparation for the game.

Before we knew it we heard the buzzer and looking up to the scoreboard; we were tied 38 to 38. During overtime we kept our heads up, working as a team, but unfortunately we were defeated 59-52. What I remember most, though, was gathering in the middle of the court after the game, as a team. Even though we had tears in our eyes and our hearts were broken, we managed to declare two simple words that kept us going throughout the season, ‘We Believe.’

The next day, while we were not playing for the state championship game, we still laced up our shoes, gave each other a pat on the back, went out to play our game of basketball, and received the honor of 3^rd place.

Once again and for my last time, we shouted out those two words, ‘We Believe.”

To believe is to have confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reality of something, although without absolute proof that one is right in doing so.

As a team, through the season and even the off-season we lived by this motto. We knew that we had to work hard; we trusted we would learn from our mistakes and we had confidence that anything was possible.

We all have strong beliefs as a teammate, a competitor, a student, an employee, AND even as an FFA member and agriculturalist.

At the 3rd National Convention, our organization adopted the words of E.M Tiffany, who summarized our beliefs as an organization, to become the FFA creed. Its latest revisions were at the 63rd Convention. For many years and years to come, members of our organization recite these words...

I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds - achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years.

I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.

I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil.

I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so--for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me.

I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task.

As a freshman I memorized and presented these words at our District speech competition. But I have continued to have confidence in these words throughout high school and throughout my life. These words guide us as we continue to take part in feeding and clothing the world.

Through tough times and good times, in whatever it is, we always must believe.

Less than a month ago, I was back on the court, but this time as a Wilson Alumni. It was different, to play against my own teammates and to no longer wear a purple and white uniform, but my motto was still the same.

I believe that I have the potential to make an impact and to make a difference as a teammate, as an agriculture advocate, and in all that I do.

Finding Time

Back in elementary school, in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade, our class would always get excited whenever our teachers' Mrs. Young and Mrs. Thielen would say just one word. READ-A-THON! So it may not be found in the dictionary, but a read-a-thon really just means that instead of having multiple lessons during the school day we just got to read from the beginning bell to the end. When we heard we were going to have a read-a-thon, we would get up and cheer. The morning of our read-a-thon, we would each come to school with our pillows under our arms, our blanket dragging across the floor, bookbags on our back, and our hands full of capri sun juice packs, candy, cookies, and crackers. We would even carry along a little money to purchase snacks at the vending machines. (As you can imagine, this was our cooks least favorite day, beacuse we were always too full to eat our food during lunchtime.) Once we got in the classroom we called out our spot and spread our blankets out, sometimes making forts or laying under the desks. Then it was finally time to lay down, eat our snacks, and of course, the main purpose of the day, start reading.

Our teachers would set a day just for us to read. This was a great opportunity for us to actually have some time to read a book and we couldn’t use the time to do anything else. In high school, though, we never heard the word read-a-thon. It was now our responsibility to always read on our own time.
Not only is reading something we must find time to do, but also reflecting; reflecting upon your life. We are not just given a whole day to reflect about what has happened and why it may have happened like reading back in elementary school. Now, we actually have to take time and reflect.

One of my favorite ways to reflect over the summer was taking a walk up and down my driveway while the sun set. Just taking some time to realize what happened that day, being thankful for the gifts that I had, and how I could be an even better person the next day. As the summer ended and college began, it got tough to find time to reflect but I realized there are many opportunities during our day to reflect…

* While Driving
* By writing in a Journal
* Chatting with a friend you can trust or who will challenge you.
* During daily chores like washing the dishes, folding clothes or cooking supper.
* Taking a Walk
* Listening to Music
* and so many more- it just depends on you!

As the holidays are here, we are usually reminded to be thankful for what we have; but truly it is every day, in all that we do, that we should show that gratitude and reflect upon our days. This day though, is the perfect day to start. This evening just take three minutes. THREE minutes before you fall asleep or while you drive or while you cook and think of what you have accomplished, some challenges you faced, how you acted and what you want to carry on to the next day and what you would rather change.

I know life goes quickly and we don’t think we have time or we need to reflect, but the only way to make us better in what we do and how we live is to learn from mistakes, to discover our gifts and talents, and to realize who we are supposed to be. A whole day is not given to us to reflect like read-a-thons in elementary school, so it is up to us to make that time.

Happy Irthday!

Sitting in their car seat I used to read them books, they rode tricycles around the farm, and I often heard them yell “Ustine, Ustine, Come play with me!”

Now my two younger brothers are playing football, heading to school every day, doing their chores at night, and writing their own stories.

It's official...my little brothers are growing up! In fact (not only are they almost as tall as me), Ethan turned 11 and Aaron turned 13 (a teen) just a few days ago! This definitely deserved a celebration! So my older brother and I went home over the long weekend. On Sunday, we cleaned the kitchen and the living room, had the cake, the candles, the presents (Ethan’s favorite), and the games all ready! As I began to place the candles on the cake, I came to discover one HUGE problem.

See these candles were not ordinary candles, these candles were the letter candles and spelled out the words HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

I had just finished placing HAPPY on the top of the cake and as I began to put the next letter on, which as we all know was to be a B, I realized that the B candle had broke! AHHHHHHHH! I didn’t know what to do, it was almost time for the cake and we didn’t have the right candles. I became slightly frustrated and upset, how could the birthday party go right?

Soon my brothers came in the kitchen, saw what was wrong, and began to laugh. I realized that their day would not be even slightly a bit ruined if their cake was missing a candle. In fact, it was even better because now instead of saying they had a Birthday cake, THEY had an IRTHDAY cake (not many people get to say that). The evening went on with the traditional making a wish and blowing out the candles, opening of the presents, and card games of UNO and it was a fantastic IRTHDAY for them both.

Things are going to go wrong in our life, but there is no reason to fret or to worry. We’ve all heard before LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES and how true it is. You learn and you live on.

Sometimes we go about life worrying more than enjoying the gift of each and every day.

At times it may take the reminder of an 11 and 13 year old boy to help you see it too.

There may come a day that you get a flat tire, you miss your alarm, you lock your keys in the car, or you break a candle for a cake, but sometimes that’s what makes life interesting and as marvelous as it is… so HAPPY IRTHDAY to all of you!

At the beginning of this month, my teammates and I got our own fair share of rhymes, words, and morals from the one and only Dr. Seuss as we prepared for District Officer Conference.

Since 1937, Dr. Seuss has been sharing his wise words with children, teenagers, and even parents.

As a reflection before the end of day one at the conference, officers reflected on the life, dedication, and commitment of Dr. Seuss compared to themselves and their year of service.

Dr. Seuss, who wrote under the pen name of Theodor Geisel, was sure that in order for people to succeed in life they must know how to read. He wanted to help everyone love to read; he did this by making reading fun. His stories of a cat in a hat, a fox in socks, and eggs that are green, brought enjoyment to all of his readers. There have been over 200 million copies of his books made and have been translated to 15 different languages. Mr. Geisel had a passion to share his love of reading, he took action, and now is known all around the world.

As FFA members and agriculturalists we have a passion for agriculture; we see the need for it around the world. So many times in the past couple months I have heard that by 2050 there will be an estimated 9 billion people on the earth (almost 3 billion more people than we have today). Even now it is a challenge to feed all of the people in our world and soon, even more. It is up to us to help feed the world now and for years to come.

To Sum It All Up: Myself in Numbers

Holding on tight to each other, my brother and I grew up weaving through the students of Wilson High School, down the hall, until we reached that one room the seemed like home. Once through the door we drew on the white board, played tetris, watched Cyberchase, and even played paper hockey. That's right, we were in Mom's math room. And what's math, without numbers? Numbers for me, though, are not just 1 + 1= 2, rather...

1= Justine Dlabal. I am Justine Dlabal. Just as all of you, I am one person who has my own strengths and my own weaknesses. My purpose in life is to fulfill God's will that he has for me.

2= Role Models. By now, I have many people in my life who have been great role models for me, but there were two people from the very start who were positive role models. My parents Jim and Rosemary showed me how to live my life; they lived with courage and strength. They have always believed in me.

3= My Three Lovely Brothers. I have been blessed with one older and two younger brothers. Ethan, the 10 year old fifth grader, enjoys playing basketball, baseball, and football. Aaron, the seventh grader, is one of the smartest little boys I know. He loves to write, draw, and play soccer. Joshua, my older brother, will be a junior majoring in civil engineering at Kansas State University. He always helps me out and if there was one would be awarded the Best Big Bro Award.

4= Prongs on a Fork. For some odd reason (I have no idea why) I prefer to use forks, which have four prongs, over spoons. I eat corn, potatoes, even ice cream with a fork.

5= Corners. My hideout, when I want to be alone, is my five corner bedroom. (Yes, my bedroom does have five corners). While my room is usually a mess (and my dad wonders how I even get to my bed at night), I can spend hours in my room finding random things to do.

6= Advisor. My advisor Mrs. Huseman begun teaching at our school six years ago. I had no idea about all of the opportunities of FFA when I first joined, but Mrs. Huseman was sure to help me along the way. Her encouragement and belief in her students is remarkable.

7=Strength. Harmony (a seven letter word) was chosen as my top strength. I try to let very little conflict arise when working with others.

8= Snooze Button. While I try to imagine every time I wake up that this new day is a gift, I do enjoy my sleep. I set at least three alarms every night in fear of missing it, yet I press snooze at least eight times before I actually make my way out of bed.

9= Sunset Time. During the summer days, I love spending the late evenings outside. About 9:00 is the perfect time of day; the colors of the sky are amazing and I've learned that YES your day will get better if you SING as the sun sets!

10= My Dream. Since I have been ten years old I have had the dream of becoming an elementary teacher. My goal is to come back to my hometown and teach at Wilson Elementary School.

11= Birthday. April 11, 1993, an Easter morning, was the day my parents were blessed with their one and only little girl.

12= Minutes. Our family lives on a farm between Ellsworth and Wilson. It takes 12 minutes to get from our farm to the school in Wilson. Although I would never try, I could probably drive the road with my eyes closed.

13= Coaches. Ever since I've first begun participating in sports I have had 13 different coaches. I have enjoyed basketball the most, but also ran track and played volleyball.

14= Classmates. I went to high school at the small 1A school of Wilson High school. I graduated with 14 classmates but more importantly friends, teammates, and supporters. We were like a family and made it through everything together. Those 14 classmates made me never want to leave.

15= Class of ’15. This next year I will be attending Kansas State University. In May 2015, I hope to become a K-State alumni as I receive my diploma.

16= First Hurt. I have never had a broken bone, stitches, etc. Although I did not have to go to the hospital, when I was 16 I rolled my ankle during a basketball game. It has been my one and only 'serious' injury so far.

17= Daily Sticky Note Use. My organizational skills consist of sticky notes, sticky notes, and more sticky notes. They can be found in my bookbag, beside my pillow on my bed, in my purse, and just about anywhere. While 17 is not the exact number I use every day, it’s pretty close to the average.

18 = Now. This brings me to today; the age I am. I have been given another year full of opportunities and full of challenges to overcome. A year to make a difference in the lives of those around me. I am very excited to serve the Kansas FFA and promote agricultural education throughout the state. My 18^th year has so many possibilities ahead of me, just as this year, this month, this day has endless possibilities for all of you.
