Country music’s biggest hitmaker brought heart, history, and a healthy dose of honky-tonk to the nation’s capital as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) partnered with the National Archives Foundation for An Evening with Garth Brooks.

Serving as the spirited kickoff to Washington’s three-day Spirit of Independence Festival, the celebration honored 250 years of American music while spotlighting the enduring soundtrack of the nation’s story.

The evening opened with a rousing performance from The Washington Tattoo, whose retired military musicians delivered crowd-pleasing classics.

Garth Brooks views the nation’s founding documents in the Archives’ Rotunda.
National Archives Foundation CEO Patrick Madden and RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier welcomed attendees, reflecting on the cultural force of American music before introducing a performer whose influence has defined country music for decades.

Then came a surprise for Garth Brooks. RIAA President and COO Michele Ballantyne and Chief Policy Officer Morna Willens presented Brooks with an enormous plaque commemorating yet another record-breaking achievement: 200 million Gold and Platinum-certified albums.

Recently named RIAA’s Artist of a Lifetime, Brooks remains the only artist ever to earn 10 Diamond album certifications, with blockbuster releases including No Fences, Ropin’ the Wind, The Hits, and Double Live continuing to resonate with fans across generations.

Accepting the honor to thunderous applause, Brooks credited his devoted fans, country radio, and the countless supporters who helped fuel a career unlike any other.

Garth Brooks performs at “An Evening with Garth Brooks” on June 4, 2026. Image courtesy Ben Krebs for RIAA

Armed with little more than an acoustic guitar, a catalog of classics, and undeniable charisma, Brooks transformed the evening from an industry gathering to a sing-along celebration. Tracing the lineage of country music through legends including Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Bill Withers, and Otis Redding, while acknowledging influences like James Taylor, Bob Seger, and George Strait, Brooks delivered both a history lesson and a heartfelt tribute to American music.

But it was his own songs that turned spectators into participants, with the crowd becoming a chorus, belting out familiar lyrics and transforming the National Archives lawn into an unlikely honky-tonk revival.

The reopened property in National Landing showcases a series of enhancements, including upgraded guest rooms, expanded event facilities, new amenities, and curated experiences.

The hotel has always offered strategic access to both Washington, DC, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (yes, there are complimentary airport shuttle services for added convenience), but now the convenience comes with a strong emphasis on wellness and comfort.

Guests will still sleep on the brand’s iconic Heavenly Beds, but also enjoy a Westin WORKOUT Fitness Studio with Peloton bikes and other wellness equipment, mobile check-in with keyless room access, and on-site parking should you need it.

As part of the reopening, the hotel will soon debut Stillwater & Stone, a new dining concept with shareable bites inspired by land and sea flavors. There is also a full-service coffee bar serving Commonwealth Joe coffee selections throughout the day.

Perhaps the best part? All of these updates and conveniences, and this one is pet-friendly, too!

Before you descend into Dupont Underground for A Fine Madness, do two things: tend to any comfort needs (there are no restrooms down there), and be prepared to step into someone else’s subconscious.

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company‘s latest offering, created and performed by Justin
Weaks is performed outside of the theatre at various locations. For us, he transformed Dupont’s former trolley tunnels into a playground for memory, imagination, and human connection.

The journey was a little bit personal reflection and a lot communal therapy.

Image courtesy Christina Daniels for Woolly Mammoth Theatre

A Fine Madness is about the stories we tell ourselves… and the ones we tell each other. Inspired by the mission of the Voyager Golden Record, it blends memoir, philosophy, humor, and audience-generated anecdotes. At its heart, it’s about dealing with a virus — HIV, COVID — but the result is a thoughtful meditation on creativity, coincidence, and the all-too-chaotic process of taking meaning from everyday experiences.

The show does not follow a traditional narrative arc; it unfolds as a series of interconnected observations and recollections, gradually revealing a larger portrait of what it means to be human. Along the way, Weaks and the audience grapple with themes of loneliness, curiosity, wonder, and belonging.

What makes A Fine Madness work is the warmth and wit of its central performer, who navigates the evening’s shifting moods with ease. Also – the production never takes itself too seriously. But still, this style isn’t for everyone.

Image courtesy Christina Daniels for Woolly Mammoth Theatre

Audience participation plays a role in shaping each performance (but it’s not the show’s defining feature). Interactive elements contribute to a collective narrative, and necessarily impact each performance.

Our take: It’s quirky but philosophical; We’ll certainly be thinking about this one for a while. Plus, the atmospheric setting of Dupont Underground proved an inspired choice. The raw concrete walls and hidden-below-the-city ambiance reinforce the play’s themes of uncovering hidden memories and unexpected connections. It’s a reminder that fascinating stories often exist just beneath the surface.

“A Fine Madness” runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. All tickets are Pay-What-You-Will tickets, where patrons pick the price they want to pay (recommended price is $25).

This summer, fabric finds fresh focus at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens. Its latest exhibit, opening June 6th, Interwoven: A Tradition of Textiles, stitches together centuries of craft, culture, and creativity in a sweeping survey drawn from the collection of Marjorie Merriweather Post.

It’s a tactile tale told in thread and time. From 17th-century lace to contemporary fiber art, the exhibition reframes textiles not as background décor but as central players: objects of identity, innovation, and intimate expression. Visitors will see finely worked French lace, richly embroidered Russian vestments, and quietly complex quilts, all carrying the marks of makers often left unnamed.

The structure is deliberate. “Centuries of Textiles” sets the stage with a cross-section of cloth across contexts… domestic, decorative, devotional. “A Stitched Family Tree” turns personal, tracing textile traditions through Post’s own lineage, where needlework passed from grandmother to mother to daughter.

At the center, “Form and Function” foregrounds technique: lace, embroidery, Kashmiri shawls, quilting. Here, intricacy meets utility. And the final section, “Commemorative Textiles,” shows objects designed to mark moments, where hands made history — from coronations to personal milestones, where fabric becomes memory made material.

Washington theatre took center stage as the 42nd Annual Helen Hayes Awards lit up The Anthem.

The region’s vibrant theatre community gathered in full force in mid-May as Theatre Washington hosted the 42nd Annual Helen Hayes Awards at The Anthem. More than 1,600 artists, administrators, supporters, and industry leaders filled the District Wharf venue for an evening honoring exceptional achievements from across Washington-area stages.

Guiding the night’s rhythm and revelry were hosts Felicia Curry, Derrick Truby, and Holly Twyford, who ushered audiences through standout performances from the Helen Hayes Awards Ensemble and stirring reflections on the creativity and resilience of DC’s local theaters.

The National Building Museum is gearing up for its next big summer stunner.

Washington’s iconic National Building Museum is planning a bold new immersive experience this season, marking the much-anticipated return of acclaimed design studio Snarkitecture (the team that brought us crowd-favorite installations The BEACH and Fun House). From July 3 to August 30, the Museum’s majestic Great Hall will undergo another awe-inducing transformation.

THE PLAYGROUND is set to transform the Museum’s soaring Great Hall into an immersive world built for climbing, building, exploring, gathering… and rediscovering the joy of play.

Rendering credit: Snarkitecture Architecture

“Playgrounds are where so many of us first experience creativity, exploration, independence, and community,” said Aileen Fuchs, president and executive director of the National Building Museum. “As the nation prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, THE PLAYGROUND is a reminder of the important role public spaces play in bringing people together. We’re excited to transform the Great Hall into a place where visitors of all ages can gather, create, play, and experience the joy of connection throughout the summer.”

And just like The BEACH and FUNHOUSE, we’re guessing the fun won’t stop at the installation itself. THE PLAYGROUND comes with a full season of spirited summer programming designed to spark movement, imagination, and intergenerational engagement.

The seasonal cocktails are coming with charisma at Doyle Bar. The Dupont darling’s new “Swing Set” menu swings into spring with a spirited salute to patio season.

Launched mid-May, the menu arrives as the capital leans into America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, though Doyle’s interpretation of history is less textbook, more terrace whisper campaign.

Golden Keys cocktail on Doyle Bar’s “Swing Set” menu. Image courtesy: Doyle Bar

“Swing Set” trades in the city’s signature currency: influence (with a little bit of intrigue). The cocktails nod to the politicians, performers, fixers, and behind-the-scenes power brokers who shaped Washington from the sidelines, often with a drink in hand. These cocktails are inspired by everyone from Lady Bird Johnson to Chuck Brown!

Each one is layered with lore (and a little local nod). Beautiful Bird, a floral tequila cocktail infused with hibiscus, honors Lady Bird Johnson with elegance and edge. GoGo Swing riffs on the rhythm of Chuck Brown with bourbon and prosecco bravado. Bern the Wood brings smoke and bourbon together in tribute to Woodward and Bernstein, while The Cork bubbles with tropical effervescence and quiet-dealmaker energy.

Silent Spring at Doyle Bar’s “Swing Set” menu. Image courtesy: Doyle Bar

Even the zero-proof selections arrive with personality. Silent Spring, inspired by Rachel Carson, is botanical and bright, while Take the A channels Duke Ellington in an herbal spritz designed to linger like a late-night jazz set drifting through the District.

General Manager Chrissy Sheffey describes the concept as a tribute to “the moments that don’t make headlines but create them,” which feels particularly fitting in a city where the real action often happens over “just one more round.”

Who’s ready for patio season?!

From battlefield brilliance to bitter banishment, a new immersive installation is allowing DC guests to “meet” Napoleon!

Napoleon Experience: The Immersive Saga has arrived in downtown DC (926 F Street NW at the Fever Hub) with a cinematic swirl of strategy, spectacle, and Napoleonic self-reflection, courtesy of Fever and Paris-based producer Sandora.

Now, this isn’t a history lesson; It’s a headset-led happening. Visitors step squarely into the story of Napoleon Bonaparte, tracing his meteoric rise and dramatic descent through a richly rendered virtual reality narrative. The twist: it’s told in his own voice. From exile on Saint Helena to imperial Paris, the experience unfolds as a final, reflective testimony (it’s almost equal parts confession and coronation, to be honest).

The journey drops guests into defining moments: the calm before the Battle of Austerlitz, the grandeur of a self-made emperor’s crowning, and the slow unraveling after Waterloo. And some parts are eerily interactive!

Rooms re-form, regimes rise, and consequences ripple… Don’t be ashamed if you jump out of the way of the stampeding army or feel compelled to duck to avoid the slash of a Hussar on horseback. You feel truly in the battle, even if the battleground is a meticulously constructed digital domain made possible through sme serious historical research.

Tickets are live via Fever’s platform for this ~45 minute VR experience, and at this location, multiple destinations are possible. You may have already read about Horizon of Khufu. Now Napoleon. What’s next??!

You heard it here first — a coveted corner of The Hay-Adams is finally up for grabs.

Inside Off The Record, the famously hard-to-score “Bench” has just become bookable for the bar’s new “Six at Six” series, a spirited, small-scale sipping session reserved for just six guests each month.

Held from 6 to 7 pm on the last Tuesday of the month, the experience pairs polished pours with playful conversation as Hay-Adams beverage pros guide guests through three themed cocktail creations and curated bites.

Think tequila and mezcal with smoky swagger in May, gin and jun with botanical brightness in June, and vodka-and-bubbles sparkle come July. The mood remains quintessentially Off The Record: discreet, dimly lit, and oh-so-deliciously DC. (These experiences are between $80-90/pp.)

Is “Six at Six” the capital’s chicest new happy hour?! You tell us! Reservations are available through Resy or via The Hay-Adams.

Clarendon’s entering its cocktail-clinking, bass-bumping era. The Boulevard, the buzzy new beauty taking over the former Wilson Hardware digs, is bringing a polished-but-playful party to Arlington just in time for rooftop season.

Backed by nightlife impresario Antonis Karagounis, the mastermind behind DC staples like Ultrabar and Decades, the sprawling concept mixes metropolitan swagger with neighborhood charm.

In the kitchen, chefs Homero González and Bayron Navarro are serving a globe-trotting spread that skips the clichés in favor of crowd-pleasing creativity. Start salivating now over the thought of those lamb slider bao buns, king salmon tiradito splashed with yuzu leche de tigre, comforting cavatelli tangled with king mushrooms, and steak frites with a side of scene.

Sushi rolls and spicy salmon ceviche studded with mango and jalapeño add extra flair for the fusion faithful. (And bonus — Thursday is Sushi Night, with discounted rolls and cocktails and half off sake!)

Upstairs, Solset rooftop is poised to become Clarendon’s sunset sanctuary, complete with breezy bites, golden-hour pours, and cocktails from acclaimed mixologist Glendon Hartley. Expect everything from caviar-kissed Gibsons to the cheeky “Breakfast Fizz,” a nostalgic sip designed for long brunches and even longer nights.

And because this is DC-adjacent dining in 2026, there will absolutely be DJs. House and down-tempo beats build as the evening unfolds, transforming The Boulevard from sleek supper spot to late-night social playground. Brunch lands in May, sealing the deal on what may become Clarendon’s newest all-day obsession.
