It was May 2002, when my father complained of an uneasiness in his stomach, he was experiencing slight pain in generally the lower abdomen. My father was a healthy person otherwise, with no major complaints apart from aches in the leg which we normally attributed to his walking long distances, as that was his hobby and he was very environment conscious in the times when people were not talking about environment or it had not become a fad to talk about. We gave him the usual home therapy for uneasiness, but the complaint persisted hence we took him to our family physician who was also like a family member. She immediately suspected something fishy and asked us to get a sonography done. The result was shocking for our family. My father was suffering from a unique syndrome atleast at the time we thought it was unique, his stomach was getting filled with fluid, and there was literally water slushing around, the only difference being water was not inside his stomach it was in the outer membrane of the lining of the abdomen. One thing led to another and within a week we came to know that he was in an advanced stage of cancer and the prognosis was he had 6 months or less time. This was even a bigger shock. Our entire family went into a hyper mode, no expense was spared no doctor worth his salt was left unconsulted, cousins sprang into action, with one motto how do we save this man. Doctors said there was only one last recourse “Chemotherapy” and the chances were about 2% of survival in hindsight we now know that when doctors said 2% they were saying look this person is certain to die 98%, but we hung on to that 2% and convinced, cajoled and pushed our father into accepting “Chemotherapy” or “Chemo”. The rest is history, our father who looked and was health till 15th of May 2002, died in exactly 95 days of starting the treatment, but the death was very painful because “Chemo” and other treatments took its toll on his body. He lost 60% of his weight, he was 75 Kilos and 6 feet tall, a personality to reckon for at his death bed he was 35 kilos, had lost all his body hair, not only on the head but every where on the body including his eyebrows. We have never seen anyone Nauseating so much, Vomiting Somuch, he could not eat nor drink water, he could not withstand any smells be it of a perfume, cooking, incense, he became silent, he had hiccups all the time. The medicines we gave on doctors advise to stop abdominal cramps attacked his Kidneys, his bile was now green in color, he could not pass stools, the last 3 days we had to drain fluids in his stomach twice, and the way to drain fluids is similar to puncturing a rubber balloon. Yes, a qualified MD would stick a needle attached to a IV tube in his abdomen and drain out fluids from his stomach, little did we know the fluid being drained was precious nutrients and his organs which were dissolving rapidly in a soup. The effect could have been combined and enhanced by the Chemotherapy treatment given to him. This is not a blame game I am writing about, what I am trying to do here is that people who are ignorant should know what is Chemotherapy and how to deal with the side effects. It is now 8 years since my father has passed away but the spectre is still fresh in my mind, its an experience which I hope no one should undergo but I know for a fact that many cancer patients will personally go through it and their family members will have to be on the side and see her/him slowly wither away. The debate on global warming is gathering steam across political boundaries. The impact of climate change on human health is a main driver of the green movement: increased incidence of heat stress and respiratory illness and spread of vector- and rodent-borne diseases are listed by experts and watchdogs as key fallouts.

For instance, according to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), increase in communicable diseases will mean that malaria will spread from the plains to higher altitudes in India. In 2003, heat waves in Andhra Pradesh caused at least 3,000 deaths; 18 heat waves were reported in the country between 1980 and 1998.

Much of the effort to combat climate change has to come from governments. India has recognized this through a National Action Plan on Climate Change 2008, which aims for large-scale solar power generation and reduced carbon emissions by industry, which now accounts for nearly 31% of India's total.

But, there is much that can be done by individuals. Major emission points within a home include energy use for heating or cooling, lighting and fuel. Transport, ranging from commutes to air travel, is a big contributor to carbon emissions. Road transport accounts for 10% of individual carbon footprints. Household waste is another big one.

Biodiversity Conservation India Ltd (BCIL), a company that builds energy-efficient housing, conducted a survey (BCIL ECO-PULSE, March 2009) of power consumption patterns among middle-class households in Bangalore. Nearly 75% of the respondents had switched to energy-saving CFL lights, yet, around 50% did not turn off TVs or fill washing machines to full capacity.

Here are five such small challenges you could take up, which make a significant difference.

1. Do you compost?

If you are still tipping your household waste into municipal bins, know that biodegradable waste cannot degrade in landfills.

Burning waste is a carbon menace, as is transportation to treatment sites. Mixing up waste renders several recyclables unrecyclable. Solve the problem at source. To start, just follow a rigorous plan of segregating waste into wet and dry, says Alur, who also had a home composting unit installed.

Companies such as Daily Dump (Dailydump.org) offer products and services. Developers such as BCIL and Good Earth Homes have community composting units on campus to handle household waste generated by all residents.

2. Do you track your household energy use?

It is important to have a full-fledged energy audit for homes, similar to what is being done for workspaces and public utilities, Alur says. Unfortunately, energy audit services for individuals are yet to take off in India. However, even a simple self-audit of energy use helps. Hidden electricity wastage (television sets and geysers left switched on, phone chargers that stay plugged in, microwaves never turned off at source) contribute more to the meter's ticking than active appliances.

3. Do you make your own solar power?

Power generation contributes 25% of all carbon emissions, the single largest contributor to global warming. Solar water heaters are the most popular green power products for homes. There are multiple suppliers, ranging from Tata BP Solar India Ltd and Selco Solar Pvt. Ltd to small local companies, all of whom can rig you up with rooftop solutions that heat 100-400 litres of water a day. Typically a 400-litre device installed in a newly built home costs Rs35,000-40,000.

4. Do you harvest water?

Even if your municipality does not make rainwater harvesting mandatory for new buildings—unlike Bangalore and New Delhi—water harvesting makes sense.

Organizations such as Frogg.in or the Bangalore Rainwater Club (Rainwaterclub.org) offer consultations and design systems ranging from those that recharge groundwater to those that also recycle grey water (domestic waste water).

5. Do you carpool?

Commuting adds to your carbon footprint, shows a carbon footprint calculator at Commuteeasy.com, a website that encourages carpools in Indian cities. "There are about 10,000 users now over 300 carpools that have been set up," says Vipual Kasera, founder, Commute Easy. "Companies like Netapp, Wipro, Hewlett-Packard and Cisco are setting up enterprise carpool solutions for employees through CommuteEasy."

What you can easily do

1. Turn off lights and appliances not in use: they use 10-40% of their total power consumption on standby.

2. Fill a kettle with exactly as much water as you need for your drink.

3. Don't leave fridge doors open longer than you can help.

4. Maintain recommended tyre pressure in personal vehicles for optimal fuel efficiency.

5. Bring your own cloth bag for shopping and avoid buying products which use too much plastic.

6. Instead of running air conditioners, wear lightweight garments and use a fan.

7. Minimize transport. Piggyback weekly errands into a single car trip. Pay your bills online. Walk, bike, take a bus or carpool whenever possible.

8. You consume up to 25% less fuel if you drive at not more than 90km an hour.

9. An electric car emits less carbon dioxide, a bicycle none.

10. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFL) or light-emitting diodes. CFLs cost three-five times what traditional bulbs do, but use less than a third of the power. Make sure new appliances are energy-efficient.

11. Choose food produced locally to reduce emissions from transport.

12. Consume less.

5 ways to the extra low-carbon mile

1. Replacing five incandescent bulbs that you use for five hours a day with CFLs reduces carbon emissions by about 250kg CO2 per year.

2. Switching off just five 60W lights in your home saves about 270kg CO2 per year.

3. Drying clothes on a line instead of a tumble dryer saves 280kg of CO2 a year.

4. Turning off the tap while brushing teeth saves about 3kg of CO2 a year.

5. Fixing a dripping tap saves about 20kg of CO2 per year.

What is a "blog"?

"Blog" is an abbreviated version of "weblog," which is a term used to describe web sites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information. A blog is a frequently updated, personal website featuring diary-type commentary and links to articles on other Web sites. Blogs range from the personal to the political, and can focus on one narrow subject or a whole range of subjects.

Many blogs focus on a particular topic, such as web design, home staging, sports, or mobile technology. Some are more eclectic, presenting links to all types of other sites. And others are more like personal journals, presenting the author's daily life and thoughts.

Generally speaking (although there are exceptions), blogs tend to have a few things in common:

A main content area with articles listed chronologically, newest on top. Often, the articles are organized into categories.
An archive of older articles.
A way for people to leave comments about the articles.
A list of links to other related sites, sometimes called a "blogroll".
One or more "feeds" like RSS, Atom or RDF files.

The Blog Content

Content is the raison d'être for any web site. Retail sites feature a catalog of products. University sites contain information about their campuses, curriculum, and faculty. News sites show the latest news stories. For a personal blog, you might have a bunch of observations, or reviews. Without some sort of updated content, there is little reason to visit a web site more than once.

On a blog, the content consists of articles (also sometimes called "posts" or "entries") that the author(s) writes. Yes, some blogs have multiple authors, each writing his/her own articles. Typically, blog authors compose their articles in a web-based interface, built into the blogging system itself. Some blogging systems also support the ability to use stand-alone "weblog client" software, which allows authors to write articles offline and upload them at a later time.

Comments

Want an interactive website? Wouldn't it be nice if the readers of a website could leave comments, tips or impressions about the site or a specific article? With blogs, they can! Posting comments is one of the most exciting features of blogs.

Most blogs have a method to allow visitors to leave comments. There are also nifty ways for authors of other blogs to leave comments without even visiting the blog! Called "pingbacks" or "trackbacks", they can inform other bloggers whenever they cite an article from another site in their own articles. All this ensures that online conversations can be maintained painlessly among various site users and websites.

The Difference Between a Blog and CMS?

Software that provides a method of managing your website is commonly called a CMS or "Content Management System". Many blogging software programs are considered a specific type of CMS. They provide the features required to create and maintain a blog, and can make publishing on the internet as simple as writing an article, giving it a title, and organizing it under (one or more) categories. While some CMS programs offer vast and sophisticated features, a basic blogging tool provides an interface where you can work in an easy and, to some degree, intuitive manner while it handles the logistics involved in making your composition presentable and publicly available. In other words, you get to focus on what you want to write, and the blogging tool takes care of the rest of the site management.

WordPress is one such advanced blogging tool and it provides a rich set of features. Through its Administration Panels, you can set options for the behavior and presentation of your weblog. Via these Administration Panels, you can easily compose a blog post, push a button, and be published on the internet, instantly! WordPress goes to great pains to see that your blog posts look good, the text looks beautiful, and the html code it generates conforms to web standards.

Things Bloggers Need to Know

In addition to understanding how your specific blogging software works, such as WordPress, there are some terms and concepts you need to know.

Feeds

A Feed is a function of special software that allows "Feedreaders" to access a site automatically looking for new content and then post updates about that new content to another site. This provides a way for users to keep up with the latest and hottest information posted on different blogging sites. Some Feeds include RSS (alternately defined as "Rich Site Summary" or "Really Simple Syndication"), Atom or RDF files. Dave Shea, author of the web design weblog Mezzoblue has written a comprehensive summary of feeds.

Syndication

A feed is a machine readable (usually XML) content publication that is updated regularly. Many weblogs publish a feed (usually RSS, but also possibly Atom and RDF and so on, as described above). There are tools out there that call themselves "feedreaders". What they do is they keep checking specified blogs to see if they have been updated, and when the blogs are updated, they display the new post, and a link to it, with an excerpt (or the whole contents) of the post. Each feed contains items that are published over time. When checking a feed, the feedreader is actually looking for new items. New items are automatically discovered and downloaded for you to read. Just so you don't have to visit all the blogs you are interested in. All you have to do with these feedreaders is to add the link to the RSS feed of all the blogs you are interested in. The feedreader will then inform you when any of the blogs have new posts in them. Most blogs have these "Syndication" feeds available for the readers to use.

Managing Comments

One of the most exciting features of blogging tools are the comments. This highly interactive feature allows users to comment upon article posts and link to your posts and comment on and recommend them. These are known as trackbacks and pingbacks . We'll also discuss how to moderate and manage comments and how to deal with the annoying trend in "comment spam", when unwanted comments are posted to your blog.

Trackbacks

Trackbacks were originally developed by SixApart, creators of the MovableType blog package. SixApart has a good introduction to trackbacks:

In a nutshell, TrackBack was designed to provide a method of notification between websites: it is a method of person A saying to person B, "This is something you may be interested in." To do that, person A sends a TrackBack ping to person B.

A better explanation is this:

Person A writes something on their blog.
Person B wants to comment on Person A's blog, but wants her own readers to see what she had to say, and be able to comment on her own blog
Person B posts on her own blog and sends a trackback to Person A's blog
Person A's blog receives the trackback, and displays it as a comment to the original post. This comment contains a link to Person B's post

The idea here is that more people are introduced to the conversation (both Person A's and Person B's readers can follow links to the other's post), and that there is a level of authenticity to the trackback comments because they originated from another weblog. Unfortunately, there is no actual verification performed on the incoming trackback, and indeed they can even be faked.

Most trackbacks send to Person A only a small portion (called an "excerpt") of what Person B had to say. This is meant to act as a "teaser", letting Person A (and his readers) see some of what Person B had to say, and encouraging them all to click over to Person B's site to read the rest (and possibly comment).

Person B's trackback to Person A's blog generally gets posted along with all the comments. This means that Person A can edit the contents of the trackback on his own server, which means that the whole idea of "authenticity" isn't really solved. (Note: Person A can only edit the contents of the trackback on his own site. He cannot edit the post on Person B's site that sent the trackback.)

Pingbacks

Pingbacks were designed to solve some of the problems that people saw with trackbacks. The official pingback documentation makes pingbacks sound an awful lot like trackbacks:

For example, Yvonne writes an interesting article on her Web log. Kathleen reads Yvonne's article and comments about it, linking back to Yvonne's original post. Using pingback, Kathleen's software can automatically notify Yvonne that her post has been linked to, and Yvonne's software can then include this information on her site.

There are three significant differences between pingbacks and trackbacks, though.

Pingbacks and trackbacks use drastically different communication technologies (XML-RPC and HTTP POST, respectively).
Pingbacks do not send any content.

The best way to think about pingbacks is as remote comments:

Person A posts something on his blog.
Person B posts on her own blog, linking to Person A's post. This automatically sends a pingback to Person A when both have pingback enabled blogs.
Person A's blog receives the pingback, then automatically goes to Person B's post to confirm that the pingback did, in fact, originate there.

The pingback is generally displayed on Person A's blog as simply a link to Person B's post. In this way, all editorial control over posts rests exclusively with the individual authors (unlike the trackback excerpt, which can be edited by the trackback recipient). The automatic verification process introduces a level of authenticity, making it harder to fake a pingback.

Some feel that trackbacks are superior because readers of Person A's blog can at least see some of what Person B has to say, and then decide if they want to read more (and therefore click over to Person B's blog). Others feel that pingbacks are superior because they create a verifiable connection between posts.

Verifying Pingbacks and Trackbacks

Comments on blogs are often criticized as lacking authority, since anyone can post anything using any name they like: there's no verification process to ensure that the person is who they claim to be. Trackbacks and Pingbacks both aim to provide some verification to blog commenting.

Comment Moderation

Comment Moderation is a feature which allows the website owner and author to monitor and control the comments on the different article posts, and can help in tackling comment spam. It lets you moderate comments, & you can delete unwanted comments, approve cool comments and make other decisions about the comments.

Comment Spam

Comment Spam refers to useless comments (or trackbacks, or pingbacks) to posts on a blog. These are often irrelevant to the context value of the post. They can contain one or more links to other websites or domains. Spammers use Comment Spam as a medium to get higher page rank for their domains in Google, so that they can sell those domains at a higher price sometime in future or to obtain a high ranking in search results for an existing website.

Spammers are relentless; because there can be substantial money involved, they work hard at their "job." They even build automated tools (robots) to rapidly submit their spam to the same or multiple weblogs. Many webloggers, especially beginners, sometimes feel overwhelmed by Comment Spam.

There are solutions, though, to avoiding Comment Spam. WordPress includes many tools for combating Comment Spam. With a little up front effort, Comment Spam can be manageable, and certainly no reason to give up weblogging.

Pretty Permalinks

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual weblog posts, as well as categories and other lists of weblog postings. A permalink is what another weblogger will use to refer to your article (or section), or how you might send a link to your story in an e-mail message. Because others may link to your individual postings, the URL to that article shouldn't change. Permalinks are intended to be permanent (valid for a long time).

"Pretty" Permalinks is the idea that URLs are frequently visible to the people who click them, and should therefore be crafted in such a way that they make sense, and not be filled with incomprehensible parameters. The best Permalinks are "hackable," meaning a user might modify the link text in their browser to navigate to another section or listing of the weblog. For example, this is how the default Permalink to a story might look in a default WordPress installation:

/index.php?p=423

How is a user to know what "p" represents? Where did the number 423 come from?

In contrast, here is a well-structured, "Pretty" Permalink which could link to the same article, once the installation is configured to modify permalinks:

/archives/2003/05/23/my-cheese-sandwich/

One can easily guess that the Permalink includes the date of the posting, and the title, just by looking at the URL. One might also guess that hacking the URL to be /archives/2003/05/ would get a list of all the postings from May of 2003. Pretty (cool). Blog by email

Some blogging tools offer the ability to email your posts directly to your blog, all without direct interaction through the blogging tool interface. WordPress offers this cool feature. Using email, you can now send in your post content to a pre-determined email address & voila! Your post is published!

Post Slugs

If you're using Pretty Permalinks, the Post Slug is the title of your article post within the link. The blogging tool software may simplify or truncate your title into a more appropriate form for using as a link. A title such as "I'll Make A Wish" might be truncated to "ill-make-a-wish". In WordPress, you can change the Post Slug to something else, like "make-a-wish", which sounds better than a wish made when sick.

Excerpt

Excerpts are condensed summaries of your blog posts, with blogging tools being able to handle these in various ways. In WordPress, Excerpts can be specifically written to summarize the post, or generated automatically by using the first few paragraphs of a post or using the post up to a specific point, assigned by you.

Plugins

Plugins are cool bits of programming scripts that add additional functionality to your blog. These are often features which either enhance already available features or add them to your site.

WordPress offers simple and easy ways of adding Plugins to your blog. From the Administraton Panel, there is a Plugin Page. Once you have uploaded a Plugin to your WordPress plugin directory, activate it from the Plugins Management SubPanel, and sit back and watch your Plugin work. Not all Plugins are so easily installed, but WordPress Plugin authors and developers make the process as easy as possible.

Basics-A Few Blogging Tips

Why should we care about animals?

Most people believe that unnecessary suffering is bad. Other animals -- particularly vertebrates -- suffer physical pain and even emotional stress in much the same way humans do. Because of this, we should take animals' suffering seriously. Because animal products are not a necessary part of our diet, becoming vegan is one of the most effective ways to reduce animals' suffering.

Why should people sacrifice convenience, cravings, and cost for the sake of an animal?

We claim to be moral beings who do not act merely to satisfy hedonistic impulses. We would not want to live in a society where people were free to satisfy all their cravings freely, where the strongest could cause suffering for the weaker if they wanted to do so. Likewise, how can we justify satisfying all our cravings for animal products, when animals must suffer in order to provide them?

Happily, there is nothing inherently less satisfying or more expensive in a vegan diet. Beans and rice are less expensive than beef or pork; heating up a Boca Burger is less expensive than buying a Big Mac; and most people find vegan food to be as tasty as non-vegan food. Even if this were not the case, most vegans don't consume animals or animal products because they do not want to be the cause of needless suffering, regardless of the convenience, taste, or cost. Living an ethically consistent life is more important.

Won't the animals just die anyway? And if we don't eat the animals, won't they overrun the world?

We don't just happen to kill and eat animals to save them from dying a natural death. We breed more than 9 billion farm animals in the U.S. each year because of the consumer demand for animal products. If we stop buying animal products, animal industries will have no incentive to keep breeding these animals.

Why should I concern myself with non-human animal suffering when there are so many people suffering in the world?

We each have limited time, energy, and money to offer. The causes and cures of human suffering are complex, often distant, and difficult to address, especially by an individual. The causes and cures of animal suffering are often simpler and all around us. Making the choice to adopt a vegan diet can have a far-reaching effect on reducing suffering in the world.

Peter Singer writes in Animal Liberation:

Among the factors that make it difficult to arouse public concern about animals, perhaps the hardest to overcome is the assumption that "human beings come first" and that any problem about animals cannot be comparable, as a serious moral or political issue, to the problems about humans. A number of things can be said about this assumption. First, it is in itself an indication of speciesism. How can anyone who has not made a thorough study of the topic possibly know that the problem is less serious than problems of human suffering? One can claim to know this only if on assumes that animals really do not matter, and that however much they suffer, their suffering is less important than the suffering of humans. But pain is pain, and the importance of preventing unnecessary pain and suffering does not diminish because the being that suffers is not a member of our species. What would we think of someone who said that "whites come first" and that therefore poverty in Africa does not pose as serious a problem as poverty in Europe?

It is true that many problems in the world deserve our time and energy. Famine and poverty ...all are major issues, and who can say which is the most important? yet once we put aside speciesist biases, we can see that the oppression of nonhumans by humans ranks somewhere along with these issues. The suffering that we inflict on nonhuman beings can be extreme, and the numbers involved are gigantic ... [and] should cause at least as much concern, especially since this suffering is so unnecessary and could easily be stopped if we wanted to stop it. Most reasonable people want to prevent war, racial inequality, poverty, and unemployment; the problem is that we have been trying to prevent these things for years, and now we have to admit that, for the most part, we don't really know how to do it. By comparison, the reduction of the suffering of nonhuman animals at the hands of humans will be relatively easy, once human beings set themselves to do it.

In any case, the idea that "humans come first" is more often used as an excuse for not doing anything about either human or nonhuman animals than as a genuine choice between incompatible alternatives. For the truth is that there is no incompatibility here ... there is nothing to stop those who devote their time an energy to human problems from joining the boycott of the products of agribusiness cruelty. It takes no more time to be a vegetarian than to eat animal flesh. In fact ... those who claim to care about the well-being of human beings and the preservation of our environment should become vegetarians for that reason alone. They would thereby increase the amount of grain available to feed people everywhere, reduce pollution, save water and energy, and cease contributing to the clearing of forests; moreover, since a vegetarian diet is cheaper than one based on meat dishes, they would have more money available to devote to famine relief, population control, or whatever social or political cause they thought most urgent. ... [W]hen nonvegetarians say that "human problems come first," I cannot help wondering what exactly it is that they are doing for human beings that compels them to continue to support the wasteful, ruthless exploitation of farm animals." Nobel Laureate, Romain Rolland wrote in Jean Christophe: To one whose mind is free, there is something even more intolerable in the suffering of animals than in the sufferings of humans. For with the latter, it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the person who causes it is a criminal. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. If any person were to refer to it, they would be thought ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime. That alone is the justification of all that humans may suffer. It cries vengeance upon all the human race. If God exists and tolerates it, it cries vengeance upon God.

What about free range?

A growing number of people are looking to "free-range" products as an alternative to factory farmed animal products. Eggs (and poultry) may be labeled as "free-range" if they have USDA-certified access to the outdoors. No other criteria, such as environmental quality, size of the outside area, number of birds, or space per bird, are included in this term. Typically, free-range hens are debeaked at the hatchery, have only 1 to 2 square feet of floor space per bird, and -- if the hens can go outside -- must compete with many other hens for access to a small exit from the shed, leading to a muddy strip saturated with droppings. Although chickens can live up to 12 years, free-range hens are hauled to slaughter the same as battery-caged hens, after a year or two. Free-range male chicks are trashed at birth, just as they are in factory farms. Although free-range conditions may be an improvement over factory-farm conditions, they are by no means free of cruelty.

The Associated Press reported on March 11, 1998:

Free-range chickens conjure up in some consumers minds pictures of contented fowl strolling around the barnyard, but the truth is, all a chicken grower needs to do is give the birds some access to the outdoors whether the chickens decide to take a gambol or stay inside with hundreds or thousands of other birds, under government rules growers are free to label them free-range.

As all free-range animals are still viewed as objects to be killed for food, they are subject to abusive handling, transport, and slaughter. Free-range animals, like all animals used for their milk and eggs, are still slaughtered at a fraction of their normal life expectancy.

Do you think it is wrong to keep an animal for a pet?

In terms of reducing suffering, there is nothing inherently wrong in living with another animal. In terms of the specifics, it depends. If you were to take an animal from a shelter, you would be giving that individual a happy home and a good life (assuming you would be good to them). If you were to get an animal from a pet store, you would be supporting and expanding the breeding of animals for pets -- which would, most likely, increase the overall suffering in the world.

Vegan Outreach does not take a position on whether dogs and, especially, cats should be vegan. People who have tried vegan diets with their pets have provided us with information indicating that, if appropriately planned, many (and possibly most) dogs and cats may do well on a vegan diet -- but some cats do not.

What about animal experimentation?

Two Vegan Outreach philosophy pieces touch on this: Beyond and Theory. You are not required to be anti-vivisection to stop eating meat. Regardless of one's views on this or any other issue, you can reduce the amount of suffering in the world by ceasing to eat meat.

Health and Nutrition

Is a vegan diet healthy?

As with any diet, a vegan diet requires planning. However, when properly planned, a vegan diet can be considerably healthier than a traditional American diet. In its 1996 position paper on vegetarian diets, the American Dietetic Association reported that vegan and vegetarian diets can significantly reduce one's risk of contracting heart disease, colon and lung cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, obesity, and a number of other debilitating conditions.

Cows' milk contains ideal amounts of fat and protein for young calves, but far too much for humans. And eggs are higher in cholesterol than any other food, making them a leading contributor to cardiovascular disease.

Vegan foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans, are low in fat, contain no cholesterol, and are rich in fiber and nutrients. Vegans can get all the protein they need from legumes (e.g., beans, tofu, peanuts) and grains (e.g., rice, corn, whole wheat breads and pastas); calcium from broccoli, kale, collard greens, tofu, fortified juices and soymilks; iron from chickpeas, spinach, pinto beans, and soy products; and B12 from fortified foods or supplements. With planning, a vegan diet can provide all the nutrients we were taught as schoolchildren came only from animal products.

Why is it wrong to eat meat?

It's not a question of being "right" or "wrong." If one wants fewer animals to suffer and die, then one can stop supporting such practices by not eating animal products.

Does religion play a role in the vegan community?

Some vegans find that their religious views support their ethical commitment. For other vegans, religion has nothing to do with their commitment.

Doesn't the Bible say we should eat meat?

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that we are required to eat animals. Just because the Bible doesn't explicitly forbid something doesn't make it right. For example:

When your brother is reduced to poverty and sells himself to you, you shall not use him to work for you as a slave.... Such slaves as you have, male or female, shall come from the nations round about you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy the children of those who have settled and lodge with you and such of their family as are born in the land. These may become your property, and you may leave them to your sons after you; you may use them as slaves permanently.

Leviticus 25: 39-46

There are many different interpretations of the Bible. Among them is the view that Eden was the state-of-being that God desired for humanity, and in this state, Adam and Eve ate no animal products.

There are plenty of devout Christians and Jews who are vegetarian and vegan, and most theologians would agree that a benevolent God is not going to condemn someone for being compassionate to animals.

Going Vegan

Isn't it hard to go vegan?

It can be, especially if you hold yourself to too high a standard. But the important thing is to make changes you feel comfortable with, at your own pace. While reducing your consumption of animal products completely may be ideal, any reduction is a step in the right direction. The vegan lifestyle is an ongoing progression. Everyone should go at their own pace and remember that all steps towards veganism are positive. It is most important to focus on avoiding the products for which animals are bred and slaughtered. Animal by-products will exist as long as there is a demand for primary meat and dairy products. When it comes to avoiding items that contain small amounts of by-products, vegans must decide for themselves where to draw the line. Some vegans will adjust their level of abstinence according to the circumstances. For example, as a consumer, you might make sure the bread you buy is not made with whey; but as a dinner guest, you may accept bread without asking to see the ingredients. These types of compromises can actually hasten the spread of veganism, in that they help counter the attitude that it's very hard to be vegan.

Isn't being vegan expensive?

There is nothing inherently more expensive about a vegan diet. If a person wants to replicate his/her previous diet with animal analogous, then yes, it can be more expensive to buy veggie burgers, prepared seitan, veganrella, Rice Dream Supreme, etc. But pasta, beans, potatoes, breads, fruits and vegetables are all generally less expensive than the animal products of similar nutritional value.

What about organic?

Although 'organic' foods may be preferred for many of the same reasons that vegan foods are (animal welfare, environmental quality, and health), a food is usually considered vegan regardless of whether or not it is organic.

What about honey and silk?

Again, it depends on one's definition of vegan. Insects are animals, and so insect products, such as honey and silk, are often not considered vegan. Many vegans, however, are not opposed to using insect products, because they do not believe insects are conscious of pain. Moreover, even if insects were conscious of pain, it's not clear that the production of honey involves any more pain for insects than the production of most vegetables or other sweeteners, since the harvesting and transportation of all crops involves insect deaths. The question remains a matter of scientific debate and personal choice. When cooking or labeling food for vegans -- particularly vegans you don't know -- it's best to be on the safe side and not include honey. As for vegan advocacy, we think it's best to avoid the issue as a defining one.

Vegan Advocacy & Activism

How can I get involved in vegan advocacy?

99% of the animals killed in the U.S. are farm animals. Each year more than 9 billion animals are raised in factory farms and killed for food in this country. While animal agriculture is certainly not the only form of animal abuse, it is by far the largest. If 5% of Americans were to stop eating animals, far more suffering would be prevented than if we completely abolished every other form of animal exploitation in the U.S. As Gary Francione of the Rutgers Animal Law Clinic has said, "If you can help ten people to go vegetarian in a year, you have done more good than most animal rights organizations.” Moreover, promoting veganism has the additional benefits of reducing human disease and environmental problems.

How can I start a group at my college / in my area?

Perhaps the best advice I can offer about starting a group is to give personal examples. When I took over Students for Animal Rights at the University of Illinois (an established group), I did the general advertising -- posters around campus, having a table at the activities fair with a sign-up-sheet, calling people who had left their names, etc. I prepared a speech for the first meeting, which was to a packed room. By the third meeting, none of the new people still attended.

Ultimately, how we built a group was through activities on campus. We met people while tabling, while leafletting, at protests, and at Ingrid Newkirk's talks. What I draw from this is to not worry about organizational aspects, and rather do things -- specifically, leaflet and table.

There are some advantages to being a recognized group. At the college level, you might be able to get funding (which can help bring in a speaker and print copies of Why Vegan), and at a higher level, tax-exempt status can be useful after a certain point. But some groups spend an often inordinate amount of time on bureaucratic, fundraising, and membership-building activities.

To a large extent, this parallels our experience with Vegan Outreach. We spent our time scrounging for money to print copies of Why Vegan (which, at the time, we collated, stapled, and folded ourselves), and Jack traveled around the country leafletting. In his travels, he met many interested people. From these meetings grew the network of activists and donors who now comprise Vegan Outreach and help to distribute hundreds of thousands to Why Vegans every year.

So the short answer is, in my opinion, the best way to start a group is to do things -- leaflet, table, display Why Vegans at many places (our booklet holder has a space for writing in a "local contact," etc. The rest can follow from this.

India Budget 2010: Quick Hits from ISB

Ease of Doing Business: Incremental Steps But Right Intent

The major concern surrounding private investment in India has been the ease of doing business. The budget addresses some of these concerns, albeit through incremental measures. Clarification of the capital gains treatment on the conversion to LLPs will ease compliance requirements for private businesses that convert. The easing of tax audit limits, some rationalization in the limits for TDS and the increased time limit for payment of Tax Deduction at Source will also ease compliance, especially for small businesses. That the rollout of the Direct Tax Code was not delayed beyond 1 April 2011 is also a signal in the right direction towards a simplified tax regime. Granting additional banking licenses should aid the flow of industrial credit. However, these have only been incremental steps and measures towards higher FDI limits and a simplified corporate law would aid this further.

Giving the Bottom of the Pyramid its Due

The budget has laid down a roadmap towards inclusive growth with clear measures to promote growth at the bottom of the pyramid. The rollout of the nutrient-based subsidy augurs well for agricultural productivity. Seeking private participation in food grain storage capacity and allowing external commercial borrowing to be raised for food processing is a step forward in creating a robust food supply chain that benefits producers though more concrete measures such as tax holidays may have acted as additional stimulants. Also, a mere moratorium for payment of farm loans as opposed to a waiver signals that the onus of performance lies with the farmers. Setting up a national social security fund and the interest subvention for low cost housing create a rounded structure for development at the bottom of the pyramid.

A New, Definite Direction Towards a Direct Tax Code

Budget 2010 is a turning point in the move from the current tax regime to the Direct Tax Code. The extent of the measures may be argued in light of sufficiency, but the direction and intentions are very clear. The reshuffling of the tax slabs upwards is a step towards what the DTC regime proposes. Increase in the 80C (includes provident fund, life insurance premium, pension plans, mutual fund investments, infrastructure bonds and national savings certificate) exemption limit. especially targeting the infrastructure sector is also a key reform. The increase in the limit for tax audit, reduction of surcharge for companies, allowing business activities up to Rs. 10 lakhs, introduction of the Saral II form for individuals, change in provisions for deductibility vis-à-vis late deposit of Tax Deducted at Source are all steps towards rationalizing the tax regime into one that is more tax-payer friendly and transparent.

No More Holiday for the Tech Sector

Disappointing the IT & ITES sector, the finance ministry decided not to extend the tax holiday beyond its expiry on March 31, 2010. In addition, the Minimum Alternative Tax has been increased to 18% from 15%. As a result, the IT & ITES sector will be adversely affected. The sector contributes about 25% of India's export revenues and about 5% to GDP. This sector employs about 10 million people directly and indirectly. Clearly, sustenance and growth of the IT & ITES sector is essential if India's economy is to achieve double digit growth. Also, given the macro-economic environment and the need of the IT & ITES companies (especially the small and medium-sized ones) for fiscal support, it would have been most prudent to extend the tax holiday for a few more years. Unfortunately, the budget turned out to be unfavorable.

Positive Though Slow Move Towards Fiscal Consolidation

The budget has retained Service Tax at 10%. The base excise duty rate on major non-petroleum products have been hiked to 10% from 8% as a roll back of the stimulus measure taken last year. These moves outline a positive movement towards fiscal consolidation. The fine print says that the proposal for common rates for a wide variety of products and services go beyond just intent and actually pave the way for a smoother implementation of Goods and Services Tax code by the new proposed deadline of 1st April, 2011. However, considering that the current year is a non election year, the measures could have been more drastic especially given that the Direct Tax Code has also been pushed to a later implementation date. The budget also does not make any amendments to Central Sales Tax rates which were proposed to be phased out gradually prior to the commencement of GST.

A Lack of Political Will in Education

It is a watershed year for the education sector in India with the Right to Education Act becoming operational from April 1, 2010. The budget has increased the allocation for education to 31,036 crore rupees from 26,900 crore rupees. The states will have access to a further 3675 crores through the Finance Commission. While this is a higher allocation, this still constitutes only about 4.5% of expected GDP, much lower than a number of other developing nations. The Finance Minister has followed the old adage of throwing more money in to build more schools and hard infrastructure, and there is no clarity on proposals for improving the quality of instruction and teachers. Year after year, we find that the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan has unspent amounts, and increasing inefficiencies in the delivery of quality education. The budget has stopped short of any firm commitment for the implementation of the Right to Education Act or providing the right incentives for state and private players to contribute to this mission. Overall, a plaid budget for the education sector, displaying a lack of political will to implement the Right to Education Act and making quality education a reality for all the children.

More Money in Consumers' Pockets

The Finance Minister's promise of making the budget for the common man's benefit was fulfilled at least in terms of direct taxes. From the point of view of the individual tax payer the increase in slab limits, with the maximum slab over Rs 8 lakhs to be taxed at 30% aims to provide relief to over 60% of tax payers.

For Indian companies too there is a strong promise with the introduction of the new direct tax code from April 1, 2011. However, the Minimum Alternate Tax increase from 15% to 18% is a bit of a blow. The budget aims to earn a net gain from direct taxes of approx Rs 20,500 crores which will put more money in the hands of the consumer and in turn boost consumer spending.

Positive Budget for New and Existing Sources of Power

This is a remarkable budget for the energy sector, particularly given the visible and strong steps taken towards renewable power. The allocation of Rs 1000 cores towards the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission and the establishment of a Clean Energy Fund are very positive stimulus for further investment by the private sector and towards making India a significant renewable energy player. The budget has kept all supply options open by providing an allocation for micro-hydel plants, particularly in parts of the country where it makes more sense, e.g. Ladakh.

The budgetary allocation for addition of power capacity has been doubled from last year – particularly focused on introducing critical technology into the sector. This, coupled with the change in the Mega Power Policy, is likely to bring down the cost of power. The introduction of new technologies will also hopefully increase the efficiency of our power plants and transmission and distribution.

The establishment of a Coal Regulatory Authority for competitive bidding of the coal reserves is a step in the right direction to encourage more players to enter the field, thereby allowing for more efficient usage of limited resources, and will serve to break the entrenched monopoly in the coal sector.

In all, a very positive budget for the power sector, for both the existing and new sources of power. This could genuinely translate into more innovative technologies transforming the sector and a significant increase in output to meet current demand.

Markets Cheer Budget 2010

With uncertain signals emanating from North Block, the expectations for Budget 2010 from were extremely low. Markets were thus pleasantly surprised by a balanced budget that may be best described as one that signaled the continued commitment to the reforms process, managing the fiscal deficit and spurring economic growth. The attempts to spell out implementation timelines for programs such as the Goods and Services Tax and the Direct Tax Code, as well as take action on items such as fuel prices was clearly appreciated. While consumption is linked more to credit, markets cheered the message from the minister that he will put more money in the hands of consumers through changes in the personal tax structure. While questions remain on issues such as whether an extension of debt repayment would indeed improve banks' non-performing assets, and how firm the plans are to make the famed GST and DTC operational in April 2011, the overall feel good nature and the lack of unpleasant surprises buoyed market sentiment. [As of about 2:20, the Sensex was up 281.75 points, at 16,535.95.]

More Licenses to NBFC and Private Players, a Welcome Move

Overall, the Budget announcements spell good news for the financial sector. However, the implementation and regulations to follow will determine the efficacy and benefits to be derived from the changes made.

Given that the lion's share of the populous banks are the Public Sector Unit banks, the Rs. 16,500 crore allocated to PSUs could help them revamp their operations and bring in greater efficiency and raise the standards of services offered. It would also serve to help them expand operations and mobilize savings in rural areas and small towns.

The icing on the cake is more licenses to Non Banking Financial Companies and private players, something they have been eagerly waiting for and which comes to them in small numbers. For this reason, they are traditionally concentrated in bigger towns and have not managed to extend their reach. Their presence in Tier-2 cities would not only give consumers more opportunities to borrow and invest but it will also raise standards of public sector offerings in the same area. Regulation though will continue to have to be watched in this space.

Hopefully, this will provide a stimulus for the economy to move towards greater freedom to multinational banks and financial institutions.

It was disappointing to not hear of any increased Foreign Direct Investment limits in banks/insurance companies/stock exchanges which would help develop the financial sector further.

Exemption on Long-term Infra Bonds, the Only Silver Lining for Infrastructure

The proposals for infrastructure in the Union Budget 2010 were disappointing to say the least. No mention of the subsidy roll-back, in line with the Parekh committee recommendations, means that the government will have to foot an unserviceable and rising subsidy bill for yet another year. The 1 rupee hike in central excise duty seems a half-hearted measure of controlling the subsidy bill. What was more disheartening was the opposition outburst and walk-out on this announcement, which indicates that it might be passed on to citizens.

On the taxation front, the repeated postponement of the Goods and Services Tax by another year to April 2011 was again disappointing. While the centre-state revenue sharing arrangements still need to be resolved, yet another year is a long time and the country will lose out on the immediate efficiency improvement s that the GST will bring on the infrastructure and logistics front. In addition, what's to say that the government will stand by its promise of implementing the GST next year as well – just another case of bureaucratic lethargy?

The silver lining is the exemption of 20,000 rupees on personal income for long-term infrastructure bonds, which should stimulate retail investment in infrastructure.

Is Simply Pushing the Nutrient Fertilizer Subsidy Program Enough?

While it was heartening to hear the finance minister announce the introduction of nutrient-based fertilizer subsidy program from 1 April 2010, this might not be enough to alleviate sector concerns.

Rather than the fertilizer subsidy regime, the inputs going into the subsidy calculations – global raw material prices, energy consumption contirbute more to cost build-up.

Though the new regime will compensate fertilizer companies for the costs they incur, it will help little in optimization of the costs themselves. The finance minister has failed to lay out a management framework that would insulate against volatile commodity prices, energy consumption inconsistencies and ensure overall operational efficiency. The mere implementation of the new nutrient based regime will more likely pass on the burden to the tax payer.
