Well Played, Herr Faust

Justin Faust is making some of the smoothest synthy-disco around these days… and he just tickled our inbox with some recent edits. Leeds-based Edwin Van Cleef’s I Want You is a strong original no doubt — so strong that i think Faust’s choice to moisten and lengthen it a bit serves it up as a nice complement — delivering it from the sweaty indoor floor to the outdoor breeze of a boat or rooftop party. Rondo Parisiano by the French baroque electro-stringers SomethingALaMode (out on Yellow Records soon) is re-crafted straight for the clubs; likewise with Swissland-based Division Kent’s Salty (released on If/Then Records).

Some top choices again well served by Herr Faust, who has recently returned from a US gig in brooklyn’s Studio B, and closer to home last month at Myyy Bitch Klub in vienna town. And trust us, it’s only onward and upwards this fall!

Bloc Party Remixed by Alex Metric

I think I wrote quite a lot about Bloc Party. Interesting band. I really hated their 1st album. If we’d had a blog then I would’ve totally written a hate post about it and all the indie kinds could’ve started throwing rocks. Nevermind, Intimacy was awesome and they follow it up with this single, One More Chance. It already has a buzz and with remixes floating around (speaking of a remix-wise very conscious band) it’ll get more and more attention, more and more chances, haha. Check the music video below. I think this video is supposed to be ‘funny’ while being ’serious on a different level’ and making the funny sad. The song is about the doomed attempts for the ‘one more’. Looking forward to seeing the band this year at Sziget festival.

Now, Alex Metric who played here recently at a Kollektiva Rave, took the song and fabricated a really cool club-friendly edit from the track. The original is already dancey in Bloc Party’s way, Alex Metric’s is just destined to be a dancefloor-faveourite. The main part is the often returning piano stuff and that’s where every tension bulding and vocal-standout ends. Awesome summer track for open air clubbing. Pay attention to Alex Metric (unlike we did until now) the guy is really something. The recent edits of Lisztomania as well as his own EP stuff is great, we’ll be following him in the future post-wise too.

The Cribs Are Back

Great UK-indie four-piece, The Cribs are back with a new single entitled We Were Aborted that preceedes the album coming out in September. After the first couple dancey indie hits, their sophomore record was brilliant in 2007. They are pretty cool live as well, I saw them the same year at Pukkelpop festival. Full of energy and from heartbreaking tunes to guitar tornadoes, they are capable of creating many-many sounds while keeping their integrity. With Johnny Marr of the legendary Smiths (the band I personally don’t like) joining them, they are destined for British success I guess. (They look funny with the old bro, check the pic.) On the musical side, We Were Aborted is a quite straightforward song and it is really a nice tune to raise an anticipation for the record. Determination and the power of desperation combined with cynical and humourous half-smiles as I perceive it. ‘Masturbation’ is one of the few words I could catch from the lyrics. Well, the guitars-whirlwind, punk vocals and heavy drumming carries it anyway. Follow the guys on Twitter so you get the updates!

Linus Loves Don Diablo; Metaphorically of Course

As you probably know, Linus Loves is getting back in the game with the Prom Night single. Although Don Diablo isn’t necessarily a Kunk super fave, he does a pretty splendid funk-down of the more-than-awesome original. It’ll be released on Breastfed’s sister label, 21:12, with some other edits by Punks Jump Up, Franki Chan, Steel Lord, etc.

I’m curious if the single will portend Linus blowing things up like he did back in the early ’00s (Kunk post on that era here) It was a soft and squishy and dancy time, and we’d give full approval.

It doesn’t hurt that i’ve been quietly desperate to enter a Rod Stewart tag into the cloud, but as remixes of covers go, the Disco Pusher edit of Au Revoir Simone’s cover of Rod Stewart’s classic Young Turks, is pretty smooth. Don’t know a lot about the pair out of new york, but by the looks of their meinspaces they look to be deep into the production side of things on a bunch of different levels. Their catalog of remixes are pleasantly smooth, airy and summer-y.

Or, as they characterize, indie-electro-pop, aka right up our alley.

Treasure Fingers Miami Horror; Metaphorically, of course

Just landing in our inbox (or rather, at 5am… damn those Aussies and their zany time zones) was a niiiice edit of Miami Horror’s Don’t Be On With Her by Treasure Fingers. It’ll be a part of the Bravado remixed album accompany other edits by Fred Falke, Cassian, Death Metal Disco Scene, and Cyndi Seui.

Treasure Fingers takes it right around where you’d expect from him — slightly funky, slightly dreamy, while ratcheting up the danceability factor. Kunkers will enjoy having this alt version on hand to play, cos if there were such a thing as mp3s having scratches and pops from too much play, the original would have it in spades.

First heard about the Northern Irish act called Gunstar when I downloaded The Dream Machine (from Fried My Little Brain) which was blogged at a lot of places around the sphere. It’s not a surprise, the guy making the music supposed to be only 20 and he brings the vibe of many nu-electro artists like GRUM and Neo Tokyo from the UK and among them his sound might be the closest to Russ Chimes and Valerie’s 80s fetish and fascination with video games and sci-fi. On the other hand, the tracks bang hard. Sometimes he builds the songs on Sebastian-esque machine noises and stuff. His sound can be bass-heavy but he never crosses to the fidget territory. Or maybe he does. Nevermind, he’s still more similar to South Central than to the Crookers. He certainly is capable of creating heavy and hypnotizing beats and the synth-sounds are a perfect fit. (Idea for new category ’space banger’.) Here are 4 tracks I love. Dream Machine and the ambient-like The Lonely Cloud (featuring Silvercord) have beauty, the others are tension-building dancefloor-destroyers. Actually, I’m following BBYYY through Bigstereo it seems. They were off the radar for some time and didn’t create much blog hype since Fuck Friend but they are back now with a new single and video. The new single is really heavy in the bass and beat areas and the vocals are kinda sick…like The Knife and stuff. It sounds like it could’ve emerged from the 70s New York underground. So bow down to the dark disco of BBYYY once again.

Woah. Even if he’s been super creepy for years… i don’t know if anything could mark the end of an era like michael going down. Not even sure if it’s true, though it looks fairly certain right now. I’m pretty sure Thriller on LP was literally the only album i listened to for over 2 years as a grade schooler. I simply didn’t have interest in anything else.

Anyhow, if he hasn’t pulled through, here’s hoping he’s in the sky somewhere, drinking a diet pepsi from a rhinestone glove, and using the other hand to give himself the crotch grab of a lifetime.

Truly one of the nicest guys the party/music biz, Kap10Kurt (shown below at his Kunk gig here last October) has recently dropped an edit of Teenage Suicide by the fast-out-of-the-block Aussies, Clubfeet. The smooth original would be pretty tough to muck up — only question is which direction to take it — Kap hangs on to much of the ‘chilling at sunrise’ feel while making the beat more robust in alternating waves. Alltogether, yet another track for the ever expanding outdoor summer tracklist…

Follow Kap’s escapades over at his meinspace and use a Bruno accent while you read the blog entries for extra satisfaction!
