Folk Festival interviews and performances all week

Tune in to The Home Stretch every day this week for a preview of TKMA's 25th annual Tucson Folk Festival, happening this Saturday and Sunday, May 1st and 2nd. (Learn more: www.tkma.org). Cathy will be interviewing festival organizers and performers, and you can also expect performances from several of the more than 100+ musicians that will take the stage this Saturday and Sunday.

On Friday, Mary Ann Beerling will also host a one-hour special from 6 to 7pm focusing on the Folk Festival.

And of course, while we want you to come on down and enjoy the festival, we know you can't always be there - that's why we'll have "better than live" coverage of the Folk Festival on both Saturday and Sunday, hosted by Ruby and Mike. Typically we will be on about a 60-90 minute delay from the Plaza Stage. Please note we are not broadcasting the Saturday headliner, Chris Hillman, so you will have to come on down to see this legendary performer.

Regular programming will be preempted on Saturday and Sunday beginning about noon each day.

The Heartless Bastards - KXCI Presents! & Studio 2A

The Heartless Bastards come to Tucson Monday, April 26th, for a KXCI Presents! show at Club Congress and stop by Studio 2A for for a live performance on The Home Stretch.

Led by front woman Erika Wennerstrom, The Heartless Bastards make indie garage rock inflected with roots blues and classic country. They deliver a commanding live show, described by the NY Times with the quote they “Take the stage and literally knock everybody down". This early show has doors opening at 6:30pm with Amy Cook and Hacienda. These opening acts get high profile props too, with Amy Cook's new album produced by Alejandro Escovedo and Hacienda's new album produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys.

Stay tuned to KXCI this weekend and Monday for a chance to win tickets to the show and for a live performance from The Heartless Bastards on The Home Stretch at 5:30pm, April 26th.

Iggy And The Stooges Radio Documentary (Friday, April 23rd)

KXCI will air a one-hour radio special at 6pm Friday in conjunction with the release of the Legacy Edition of Iggy and The Stooges' RAW POWER. Bad Veins consists of Benjamin Davis (vocals, guitar and keyboards), drummer Sebastien Schultz, and a third member, Irene, the lovingly named antique reel-to-reel player that handles 50 to 70 extra tracks, allowing the dynamic duo to create their huge orchestrations the way they were intended.

From 8am to 8pm, we will have special interviews and segments with local and national environmental leaders, special guest deejays, and of course, a ton of Earth-friendly music.

From 5pm to 7pm, you are invited to join us at the station (220 South Fourth Avenue) for a commissioning ceremony for our new solar panels. We've invited several notable speakers and community leaders. We'll have station tours, free gifts for the first 100 visitors, solar-powered pizza from Brooklyn Pizza, and snacks from our friends at Sunflower Farmers Market. On Wednesday, March 31, Tucson's Community Radio 91.3 KXCI will observe the legacy of César Chávez. 91.3 KXCI will be broadcasting from 3:00 p.m. to midnight on Wednesday, March 31. 91.3 KXCI is already home to great latino music every Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to midnight. For César Chávez Day, Sabor Del Barrio host Pepe Galvez joins The Home Stretch from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; DJ Javier will host Sabor Del Barrio from 6:00 p.m.-8:00pm; Ernesto Portillo, Jr., will host Onda Suave from 8:00 p.m.-10:00 pm; and Justin Enriqez will cap off the day with La Serenata from 10:00 p.m. to midnight.

César Chávez Day will be filled with great, relevant music interspersed with spoken word segments by people from the Tucson community. From 3:00 p.m. to midnight KXCI will feature brief interviews with local educators, community leaders, musicians and activists. These local voices will be woven into a blend of border music featuring selections from the United Farm Workers' movement, soulful sounds of that turbulent time period and contemporary socially relevant songs.

The historical struggles of César Chávez are still relevant today and many people in our border community continue to be inspired by his work.

Arizonan César E. Chávez was a second generation American born in Yuma on March 31, 1927. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa, Chávez and Dolores Huerta organized farm workers throughout California. They fought for better working conditions, better wages and for just treatment of workers by striking, boycotting and marching for the United Farm Workers Union. César E. Chávez died peacefully in his sleep on April 23, 1993 in in San Luis, Arizona.

As hundreds of indie bands head to and from Austin for the SXSW Music Conference, some of the best ones make a stop in Tucson along the way. On their way back from SXSW in Austin, The Nadas are scheduled to stop by KXCI's Studio 2A on Monday to share songs and stories from their new album, Almanac, featuring a song written every month in 2009. Tune in Monday to learn more about this interesting project and to catch up with The Nadas, live in Studio 2A at 3:30pm.

Also on their way back from Austin, Visqueen stops by to play songs from their new album (also Cathy's "Pick of the Week" this week) called Message To Garcia. Visqueen also performs Monday night at Plush as part of the South By Southwest Festival held at both Plush and Club Congress. Visqueen is expected to be live in Studio 2A around 5:30pm Monday.

Moreland & Arbuckle play country blues in a revved up and rockin' hill country blues style. Yukon native Gordie Tentrees sits in with Acoustic Alternative host Henry Hallett for an live performance around 4:45pm on the Home Stretch. Gordie plays gritty folk and Americana, in the vein of fellow Canadian Fred Eaglesmith. He's playing at Nimbus Brewery at 8pm.

Then get ready for some high energy rock n' roll around 5:30pm with The Soundtrack Of Our Lives. KXCI's Jorgenator sits in with this Swedish psychedelic group for an interview and performance on The Home Stretch. They are swinging through Tucson on a rare U.S. tour and will be performing Tuesday night at The Rialto Theatre. This all ages show starts at 8pm with Nico Vega and The Static Session.
