Friday it's Bill Callahan at Plush.
After almost 20 years of using the alias Smog for his music, Bill Callahan switched to his given name. With over 10 full-length, critically acclaimed albums to his credit, his latest effort is no different, Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle (out April 14).
Bill Callahan is recommended for fans of Iron & Wine, Will Oldham, Leonard Cohen and Lambchop. Follow That Bird! gets things started and doors open at 9pm.

KXCI To Host Tucson's Woodstock 40th Anniversary Party

It's official - KXCI will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock with a great big (but affordable!) concert at the Rialto Theatre on Saturday, August 15th.

This family-friendly event will run from 5 to 11pm and feature about a dozen of Tucson's premier musicians and bands covering the artists that appeared at Woodstock in 1969 - folks like Janis Joplin, Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, Santana, Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix and The Grateful Dead.We'll also have food and fun to add to the festival setting, all while staying in the air-conditioned comfort of the Rialto.

Stay tuned to KXCI for announcements on who exactly is playing, ticket prices and information, and much more.

KXCI Welcomes New Board Members

At the June 18th KXCI Board of Directors meeting, the Board accepted the results of the annual board election and welcome five new members to the Board.

Please join us in welcoming to the Board of Directors: Andrew Agnew, Cecily Crebbs, Marc Goodman, Keith Kanzler and Debra Rodriguez.

Also at the meeting the board re-appointed two members to second terms on the board: Melanie Morrison and Hardy Smith.

And finally, we said goodbye to two board members whose terms expired. We would like to thank Mary Buckley and Don Copler for their tireless dedication and service to KXCI as members of the Board of Directors.

Board Election Update/Annual Meeting

Voting in the KXCI board election has closed, with ballots required to have been postmarked by June 12th.

Next week a committee of KXCI board members, KXCI members and staff will verify and count the ballots. Winning candidates will be sat at the Thursday, June 18th annual meeting, set for 6pm at Plush (4th Avenue and 6th Street).

In the tradition of our annual meetings, this event will include complimentary light food and musical entertainment, this year provided by The Dusty Buskers. A cash bar will also be available. Please come meet our new (and old) board members at this public meeting. Please note: while the meeting starts formally at 6pm, the food and music start at 5:30. We hope to see you there!

KXCI Powered Down For Safety

Beginning Sunday, May 31st, and expected to last for a week, KXCI is cutting power at its transmittor site to about 25% during daytime hours (roughly 7am to 5pm). These daily "power downs" permit the tower maintenance company safe access to the site for the removal of old equipment from a station co-located with KXCI.

Actual times may vary depending on the work being done. The tower company is working with all stations impacted by the work to keep power reductions to a minimum. Depending on your current level of reception, you may or may not notice a difference in your reception when we are at reduced power. Webstreaming at KXCI.org and the SAP programming available through the Access Tucson channels (Cox/Comcast subscribers) is not impacted.

Thank you for your understanding and patience while we are powered down.

Updating KXCI's Website

We're still working out a few bugs, but we're pleased to announce that KXCI is expanding further into the blogosphere by dividing our current blog postings into two new pages: one designed just for KXCI on-the-air news and music events, and one for relaying more "behind the scene" information.

As both blogs at KXCI.org take shape, you'll begin to see how they are different, but also how they work work together to help us convey as much information as you'd like about your Community Radio station, and about your community.

This 'splitting' of the blogs is also one step in a slight redesign of our website that when completed will make KXCI.org an even more dynamic aspect of our service.

Food Is Good CD Release Party May 10th

Food is Good... For The Body and Soul is a compilation CD of songs about food featuring 17 local musicians. The disc will be available for $10 each, with proceeds benefitting the Community Food Resource Center of the Community Food Bank in Tucson.

Food is Good is having a CD release party on May 10th from 2 to 8pm at Old Town Artisans, 201 North Court in downtown Tucson. Admission to this event is by donation of two or more cans of food.

AMY GOODMAN TICKET UPDATE

A limited number of tickets remain for Sunday night's Amy Goodman speech at the Tucson Convention Center's Turquoise Ballroom. Remaining tickets (at the $10 price) will go on sale at 5pm at our will call table, located just outside the ballroom. You do not need to go the convention center box office; they do not have the tickets. These tickets will be sold "first come first serve" until we reach the limit for seating in the ballroom.

Doors for the event also open at 5pm.

The TCC Turqoise Ballroom is located on the west side of the convention center.

91.3 KXCI Community Radio is pleased to provide special programming devoted to Earth Day. Sure, we know every day is Earth Day, but we also think it is a good time to focus our energies and renew our commitment to walking a little lighter on the Earth.

From 5:00 am to 6:00 pm, all of our Wednesday programmers will be contributing some tunes which connect with the Earth in some way. Thanks to Early Morning Mixer Jeff Millsap, Your Morning Brew host Jim Blackwood, Music Mixers Bevan Bluemer and Scott Denton, and Home Stretch host Cathy Rivers for rising to the challenge.

We got a chance to talk with people from our local government, nonprofits, the University of Arizona and other Tucsonans.

Colleen Crowninshield is from Pima Association of Governments which manages Clean Cities, a voluntary program of the U.S. Department of Energy to expand the use of alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuel, accelerate the use of alternative fuel vehicles and build a local refueling infrastructure for these vehicles.

Tres English is from the Teaching and Helping program, funded by Pima County, which trains people in skills for the repair and remodeling industry. They organize small teams of trainees and experienced mentors to do projects on the homes of low-income Tucson families.

The University of Arizona has Earth Day events throughout the day today.

The Associated Students at the University of Arizona Committee on Sustainability are hosting a “Carbon Down Arizona” Block Party on University Boulevard between Euclid and Park today from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Highlights include eco-friendly art classes, performances by local bands, educational activities hosted by campus clubs and organizations, and free yoga classes at the UA Visitor Center. There will also be a "clean car show," showcasing fuel-efficient or hybrid vehicles. The UA Farmers' Market, which normally takes place on Fridays, will instead coincide with the block party.

The "Carbon Down Arizona" block party is just one of several events planned to celebrate Earth Day at the UA. Others include:

Arizona International Film Festival, April 16-26

It’s the amazing story of a native Indian from Mexico’s Copper Canyon, her 1,500 mile walk to Kansas, and her mistaken confinement in a mental hospital for 10 years. Rita Of The Sky features a performance by Tucson’s Borderlands Theater. KXCI fans receive 2-for-1 admission to the festival on Monday just by saying “I Love KXCI” at the box office.
