Project:  We tore down a 200 year old single room house in the back field on our property, saved all of the wood we could, pressure washed it, and started charting the ideas for the reclaimed wood.  Up first on the list was a new headboard in our master bedroom.  In typical fashion, I just clamped the iPhone in to the Joby tripod, with the i.Trek Supermount and pushed the red button.  After the fact, I read several articles.  These 3 are my favorite:

  My execution was not flawless by any means, but it was pretty effortless…  Turns out that time-lapse is an awesome merge of still shots spun into a video.  Exactly how I used to help students learn ideas through clay animations projects.    Except iOS 8 automates it all on a dynamic timer, based on the length of the recording.  It’s a video. Not still images.  The Phone should be horizontal, NOT vertical.  Always this, and never this.

I did think ahead and go to “Do Not Disturb” mode.

In the experiment, I was really interested in the storage real-estate the project consumed.  I am surprised.  The six hour project only consumed about 161 MB on the phone in .mp4 format.  I’m now thinking of new ways to leverage time-lapse in the making/learning space.

This is a recently created video that is being added to an iTunes U Course myself and a few others are developing.  The course is all about Digital & Blended Learning strategies.  This specific video deals with implementing some research based strategies when creating video for your students.  Call it “Flipped” or call it whatever you want… But teachers are starting to create more and more video content for their students to learn from, when away from the traditional learning space – the classroom.  The point is that we are extending our learning spaces to anytime, everywhere, always on more so today – than ever.

So don’t just create video… Create GREAT video.  The 12 principles used to create these DOs & DON’Ts are from Richard Mayer and the wildly popular Multimedia Learning (2nd Edition) text.

This is a quick tip video sharing some ideas around Apple TV, Video Mirroring, and iOS devices.  I haven’t tried this in a classroom with a ton of students, so not sure how it plays out… but that is on the agenda for proof of concept.  NOTE: before you watch… this was shot really quickly, on an iPhone, and with very little edits.

Here is what I do NOT know as of yet:

• What are the resource constraints video mirroring to Apple TV from iOS devices places on your wireless network (how much bandwidth is being used by the video/audio push to display)?
• In an enterprise network design (dhcp, VLan’s, and more) how well does the Apple TV work?  Is it hard to set up?
• What is the best way to manage who is pushing to the projection device or TV (HDMI only – by the way)?
• If putting a password on the mirroring, how does that play out?

There is a ton still to research here… but I think it is worth it for sure!
