Animated, engaging, dynamic, are a few of Michael’s qualities that contradict the tired librarian stereotype.

A little bit of Internet history…

In the mid 90s when Mosaic begat Netscape the Internet as we know it today was born. Librarian’s thought, what an amusing notion, interesting, but not particularly useful. By the late 90s librarians were checking out What Color is Your Parachute? and checking in on their 401ks; fearing this new technology might soon replace books, libraries, and librarians. Zoom forward to today—the Internet has matured. New technologies have spawned new ways to communicate, to access and exchange information, and socialize.

Michael Stephens is at the forefront of how these new tools provide new access to information; as well as their ability to revitalize the library’s role as social center. He has the ability to see where the traditional library roles and new technologies overlap, how they complement one another, and the gift to successfully share this vision.

Named one of Library Journal's Movers and Shakers 2005, Michael is currently an Instructor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University. His wit and wisdom is available 24/7 at his very popular blog Tame The Web: Libraries and Technology. http://www.tametheweb.com/

Michael has just published “Web 2.0 and Libraries: Best Practices for Social Software.” http://www.techsource.ala.org/ltr/web-20-and-libraries-best-practices-for-social-software.html This book is essential reading and a great reference for any librarian interested in incorporating Web 2.0 and social software into their library programming.

At the 2006 KLA/KSMA Joint Annual Conference Michael is presenting a “Conference Blog Workshop” on Wednesday, September 27 at 9 AM – 12 PM and a session “Toward Library & Librarian 2.0” on Thursday, September 28 at 11 AM – 12:15 PM. Early weblogs were simply manually updated components of common websites. However, the evolution of tools to facilitate the production and maintenance of web articles posted in said chronological fashion made the publishing process feasible to a much larger, less technical, population. Ultimately, this resulted in the distinct class of online publishing that produces blogs we recognize today. For instance, the use of some sort of browser-based software is now a typical aspect of "blogging”.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The focus of the Kentucky Library Association Weblog will be, obviously, issues of interest to Kentucky Librarians. In the beginning the blog will be a primer of all things blog, a sort of “how to” blog. Eventually it will become a means of communication between the Association and the membership.
