Lend us your ears, fellow humans.

You may not have thought about the incredible beauty of hospitality... and how it touches each and every one of us, every day. Much like the power of music, the arts, or faith, hospitality is a powerful force in our world. Whether an act between people we know, new people we meet, or at our morning coffee shop, we can elevate (and celebrate) humanity through hospitality.

If done well, hospitality is one of the most noble and rewarding professions... but it's sadly not always perceived as such. The industry can be challenging, without a doubt—and cynical folks may dismiss us as sentimental... but the truth is, establishments that place kindness, authenticity and people first really do make the world a better place.

Many of you reading this are avid travelers who enjoy hospitality experiences across cultures. As travelers, we are especially tuned in to the beauty of hospitality... because without it, our travels would be much less enjoyable.

Here we present ten ways that hospitality makes our lives better and elevates society as a whole:

1. IT'S INCLUSIVE. You can always find a place to go with a welcome sign on the door. You can get to know the folks at your local coffee shop or cafe... and you can have a chat if you're feeling lonely or disconnected. It allows us an escape from isolation. Sometimes a welcoming smile is just what's needed.

2. IT CONNECTS. You can connect with the staff, meet new people at a hostel or communal table, enjoy a festive setting with friends. Even if you're solo, you can feel connected with the social vibe surrounding you instead of sitting home alone.

3. IT PROVIDES. Ambience, food, drink, treats, comfort, a good night sleep... hospitality takes care of you and provides for you. You can find a home away from home, new cultural discoveries, a respite from the daily grind.

4. IT'S PERSONAL. Mindful hospitality tailors your experience to what best serves you at that moment. An emotionally intelligent host can discern if you need a bit more care and warmth, or if you'd rather just meditate in silence with the glorious meal that was just presented.

5. IT UPLIFTS. You can be feeling out of sorts and head to your local watering hole or tea house and feel better. You can enjoy someone else cooking dinner for you, serving you, and cleaning up after you too. Hospitality establishments exist to uplift you.

6. IT HEALS. At the far end of the spectrum, if you're in a downright depression, sometimes a welcoming smile from a hospitality person, the healing hands of a therapeutic massage, a tea ceremony, they can heal you... mind, body and soul.

7. IT TRANSCENDS. Hospitality traverses all labels and divisions—race, class, status, rank, age, orientation. It doesn't care who you are, what you have done 'right' or 'wrong', why you are 'worthy' or 'not worthy'. It doesn't discriminate. It's unconditional.

It's beyond hype or stars or reviews. Its value is not determined by social media. It's deeper than these metrics. Its value is beautiful and powerful in its essence.

8. IT'S A TWO-WAY STREET. Guests and hosts, we're in it together. Responsibility falls to both parties. Hospitality experiences are most rewarding when there is mutual respect, consideration and kindness. It brings us together.

9. IT'S EVERYWHERE. In every country, in every culture, it connects us. It's a universal language that we all speak. We all seek it, we all provide it and we all need it.

10. IT TRANSFORMS.  When we take all these things into consideration, hospitality (and travel) is transformative. When guest and host act in the spirit of true hospitality, our collective humanity benefits from each and every act. It's the butterfly effect... it ripples outward like the waves of a pebble tossed into water. How epic is that?

So today...

Can we pledge today to be more mindful as guests?

As hospitality staff can we remember exactly why what we are doing is so freaking special?

As hospitality owners, can we think about the powerful impact we are making in the world—with the way we do business, the way we treat people, the way we serve? Not just for those who pay us, but for those we pay?

And for all of us, can we act with hospitality regardless of financial exchange? Regardless of context? Because after all, hospitality is about kindness and service, between each and every one of us, in the way we live our lives every day. Hospitality is a way of being in the world. Let's choose a hospitable life.

My occasional social anxiety had decided to make an appearance and was causing my ears and face to flush with nervous heat as I navigated the art deco opulence of the Dewberry Hotel lobby.

As I approached the ballroom, I had already equated in my mind, this oncoming experience to that of a baby or bridal shower, Junior League meeting or sorority mixer: the kind of dense congregation of women the likes of which I’d made it a habit to avoid.

Checked in with laminate and materials in hand, I scanned the room for familiar faces, and admittedly, the bar. Targets acquired, thank God. My friend Ashley, general ray of sunshine and manager for a celebrated local restaurant with a newly won James Beard under their belt, was already chatting with a small group and sipping rosé. As a matter of fact, everyone’s drinking rosé. Go figure...

Fast forward about an hour and a half: I’m now sitting on the tented patio adjacent the ballroom, tears in eyes, clapping earnestly and enthusiastically for Laura Wagstaff, the special events coordinator for Nomad Hotels and Make it Nice Hospitality Group. She’s just delivered the keynote: a refreshingly grounded tale of personal and professional struggle due to surprise health-related circumstances and the lessons learned therein. Looking around the crowd of women, all applauding and clearly moved in the same fashion, I am relieved and, moreover, excited for the two days of lectures and events ahead.

The tone for FAB, an educational conference for females in hospitality, has been set. In hindsight, I feel foolish and narrow-minded for my earlier concerns and anxieties. What has been cultivated here and has called these women to take part, is an unique opportunity for judgement-free, all-inclusive information sharing, support and empowerment.

This is the second year of FAB, which takes place in the southern culinary mecca of Charleston, South Carolina and was founded by many a F&B gal’s friend and mentor, Randi Weinstein. Randi says the goal of the conference is to ‘Educate, Inspire, Activate or Re-educate, Re-inspire, Re-activate - depending upon where you are in your career.’

FAB offers two tracts to select from and follow. The 101 track is geared toward women committing to develop a career in the industry, while the 202 is aimed to aid women who currently own, or are interested in owning, their own businesses. Both involve two days of workshops: carefully chosen topics covered by a specifically selected panel of four hospitality professionals and one moderator to move the conversations along. Topics run the gamut: from Tech to PR and Marketing to HR to Sustainability to Industry Trends and beyond.

My first workshop was ‘Cut the $hit, Embrace Sustainability’, a truly inspiring conversation about moving your hospitality business into a more sustainable future. While some seemingly obvious points were touched on: using every part of your product (stems and tops and bones), recyclable vs. compostable, etc., the overarching message here was flat out education. In order to make your company more sustainable, you have to generate the understanding of why that shift is important and valuable. As an owner, operator, or manager you must then parlay that knowledge into enthusiasm for the ‘cause’ in order to maintain the buy-in from your staff, your customers and the local community. Your goals may feel lofty and unobtainable, and the push back may be palpable, yet hearing the panelists discuss their business’ massive strides towards sustainability only further reinforced the fact that if you stick to your guns, your company CAN make a difference.

Riding this inspiration high, I charged through my next five panels, devouring information and insight. From ‘Creating & Sustaining Culture’ to ‘Inspiring Strong Leaders’ these sessions all largely dealt with the psychology of our industry and how we might save ourselves and mentor others to navigate a hospitality career in a healthy and balanced way. As I am sure is relatable across many fields, the hospitality industry demands a great deal of us. Often it is necessary to wear many hats and multitask readily, to be extremely physically active for hours on end, and abandon any sort of reliable sleep or eating schedule. For those of us who aren’t naturally extroverted, the social aspect of interacting with guests and navigating the many personalities on your team can be particularly draining. This year’s FAB was on the heels of Anthony Bourdain’s untimely passing and the context was resonating profoundly.

The panelists offered a wealth of advice to take with you, such as create a green space on your business’ property, allow yourself to be vulnerable and present but be wary of excessive empathy, and do not be afraid to speak truth to power. There was also plenty of blunt candor: talk of unabashedly smoking pot and playing video games to unwind and why they were let go from a past position. In this manner, these heavy topics were addressed with voices that were encouragingly relatable and also balanced a tone of respectful professionalism with unapologetic realness. Hearing the questions and testimonials from the other attendees and then seeing their faces upon the close of each workshop, I knew I wasn’t alone in this assessment.

I could of course go into more detail on these dynamic conversations. Then I could describe the other aspects which contribute so greatly to the experience of FAB: the curated catering services, clever pop-ups, tasty luncheons and buzzing social happy hours - all of which incorporating female-run businesses.

I could portray the pure joy and admiration emanating from a gaggle of bright-eyed, young F&B women surrounding Barbara Lynch as she held court on the steps outside Tu restaurant. Then paint a picture of the female filled dining room of tables enjoying their inventive fare and clinking glasses in celebration and camaraderie.

I could elaborate on how this conference was just what the doctor ordered, after only this spring I chose to walk away from a labor of love/dream concept due to a particularly toxic professional partnership. Yes, I could wax poetically for pages on all these points. However, for me and for many other attendees I’m sure, the greatest take away was: you are not alone. Our personal and professional realities are more often than not, extremely similar to one another. In reaching out, connecting, and communicating we can tap into incredible strength, knowledge, inspiration and support. FAB facilitates this connection.

Oh, and that rosé everyone was slinging back at the welcome event: that company is founded, owned and operated by a mother/daughter team.

Surrender.

I’ve been working on surrendering to whatever comes up in my life: trials, tribulations, joy and harmony. All of it.

Surrendering to the unexpected. Because I’ve found that not only does it lead to a much more interesting life, it also allows you to expand as a human. I’ve also found that much of life is about choice and how you chose to respond to your circumstances. If you chose to respond to respond to a situation in anger, you’ll find a million reasons to be angry. If you respond with happiness, well, you get the picture.

Thinking in this way gives you tools to be discerning in tough situations and tools to help you thrive. It helps you manage your expectations for living a healthy and mindful life. For me, this also transfers over to how I travel.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone into a trip hoping for a certain outcome or thinking it would play out a certain way, only to have my plans ripped out from underneath me. When this happens it can be discouraging, but it can also create room for something even better. That’s the essence of travel. It’s why we chase after it, no? Because it teaches us how to surrender to something bigger than ourselves.

This is exactly what happened for me at Maraviglia Conscious Living Center in Tuscany.

I had it set in my mind that I needed solitude during my trip through Italy. I planted this seed in my head that I needed to do some soul-searching. I wanted recluse and refuge. And while that did happen, it didn’t happen in the way I imagined. Because I couldn’t have known how the dynamic of the group or the love that emanated from Maraviglia would manifest.

I had been in touch with Francesco, the owner of Maraviglia, before my arrival to his retreat center. There was already this sense that he was different from most folks I was going to interact with during my trip through Italy. Maybe it was the fact that I had been introduced to him through Louree and Kynder, or maybe it was just a vibe I was picking up on. Whatever the feeling, I could tell that it was going to be a special place. To that end, my expectations were met, tenfold.

The Arrival

Arriving at Maraviglia is like walking into a big, juicy hug from your long lost friend. In fact, the moment I stepped out of the car, I was greeted by Francesco with a big hug. It was as if he and I were reconnecting after years apart. There was an instant kinship between us. Whatever stress and anxiety I had from driving on the (challenging) Italian highways to get there melted away the moment I stepped on that soil.

What I quickly realized is that at Maraviglia—the house, the people, the Tuscan countryside—it’s all a container for peace and healing.

Music and lavender filled the air as I dropped my bags off in my room. I was quickly greeted by a handful of faces that would soon become my family for the next few days. Next, Francesco gave me a tour of the grounds and shared all the ways in which his childhood home, now converted into a retreat center, had transformed. He shared that his vision was to create a place where travelers could disconnect from the daily grind and to get back to the basics… to immerse themselves in what nature has to offer.

As someone with a keen interest in sustainability, I knew Maraviglia was going to speak to me on a deep level. From the organic olive grove that surrounded the house, to the natural water well in the yard, this was rustic, Tuscan living at its best. That said, the conscious living center is modern in its own right. The shared and private rooms are comfortable and have all the amenities you could want. The house is also cozy and chic. It feels lived in but also luxurious. Something about this unique combination gives way for you to feel at ease.

That night, the other housemates and I settled in for a home-cooked meal outside. The sun set in the distance as fresh pasta and wine started to find its way to the table. The guests all started to share laughter and personal stories.

It was a recipe for magic.

Even with a slight language barrier, it became clear to me that everyone at that table, was there for their own form of soul-searching. We had all landed ourselves at this table because we were the kind of people who knew how to surrender to our circumstances. It ended up being a beautiful and inspiring night, and it was only my first night there. I had a distinct moment where I thought to myself, “You know, I thought that being alone with myself would be the peace I was seeking out, but I’m feeling really comfortable and taken care of, in this moment.” In that instance, being surrounded strangers, who were not quite strangers, felt serene and honest. This feeling stayed with me from that first night until my departure.

Yoga, Pasta and Presence

At Maraviglia, we started our mornings with meditation and yoga led by Nea Swanston. Nea has an incredible gift for facilitating a practice based on the energy of the group. She could read exactly where everyone was at and curate a yoga flow around that energy. It didn’t matter if you were a master yogi or a novice, all that mattered was that you showed up for yourself.

The rest of the day was left for guests to do as they pleased. I spent my time reading, napping, getting to know the other housemates, and finding my moments of solitude in nature.

At one point, Francesco invited a few of us to go to meet the neighbors and gather lunch from their garden. His neighbor Gianluca, shares land with Francesco and together they harvest olives and other organic goodies. They also share a passion for sustainable living and good hospitality. Gianluca is a gracious host who took care in sharing his bounty with us. We collected items for lunch and made a delicious and hearty salad. Again I found myself easing into country living, which allowed me to listen to my heart and instincts. That soul-searching I wanted to do? It came naturally. It came as I lived out my experiences at Maraviglia. I was able to gain clarity about questions I had going into this trip. I could do this, because I had folks surrounding me who wanted me to feel comfortable and cared for.

Francesco has set Maraviglia up as a place where you can attend curated group retreats throughout the year or personal retreats during selected dates. I was there during open house dates and I have no doubt that when I return, in any capacity, it will be just as magical. It’s just the kind of place where you can’t help but fall in love with those around you. There are no distractions, no external pressures. It’s just you and nature, and those who are there to be present with you, in whatever comes up.

Maraviglia is the kind of place I will recommend over and over again because I believe in the people who bring it alive. I believe it's the kind of place that will attract those who want to expand their hearts and minds. To me, this is what good hospitality is all about. It’s about creating a space for mindful living. It’s changing the idea that good hospitality only comes in the form of a posh, ridiculously expensive hotel. Places like Maraviglia exist to show that where there is surrender, there is magic.

The Himalayas

Please tell us about the natural splendor of the Himalayas and the beauty of its people.

The Himalayas are truly spectacular. I would recommend everyone to experience it at least once in their lives. To really immerse yourself in the mountains I’d recommend trekking. I trekked the iconic two week Annapurna Circuit back in 2014. It’s still the highlight of my travels around Asia and really had an impact on me. Apart from losing a ton of weight and getting super healthy, it taught me a lot about myself.

The Himalayas are incredibly diverse. You trek through stunning rice terraces, alpine forests, past gushing waterfalls and raging rivers. The mountains rise magnificently with each step you take and to see their beauty up-close is something that never leaves you. It’s a privilege just to be there. It was a great way of putting my life in perspective at the time, as I’d left my corporate job to travel. Being here felt empowering and to this day I try not to sweat the small stuff. At night, I’d stare at the silhouette of the moonlit mountains against a backdrop of star-filled skies. I think I just spent two weeks consumed by wonder and disbelief! Meeting various people from different ethnicities also made me realise that we have more in common with each other than we think. We all essentially want the same things for ourselves and our loved ones.

China and Tibet

When traveling through China and Tibet, what made the most impact on you emotionally?

I wasn’t sure what to expect from China. With its vast landscapes, sky-scrapers and ancient towns, it was an eye-opening experience. The people were so friendly often wanting to talk to us or take pictures with us. Even in small towns where we would be stared at, I found offering food and trying to speak the language normally broke the ice! Though I found Chinese very difficult to grasp and resorted a lot to hand gestures much to their amusement! What shocked me was how much development and change took place and at break-neck speed! There seemed to be so much tearing down of history only for it to be rebuilt in a modern way.

This urge to replace the old with the new was also evident when we went to Tibet (now referred as the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China). I’d always wanted to see Tibet before the political issues took away its authenticity. Arriving in Lhasa we were confronted by fast food places and a heavy Chinese police presence. It was sad to see the Tibetan culture being diluted and brought home the struggles of the Tibetan people. Saying that, we spent eight amazing days touring Tibet and its monasteries and ended the trip at Everest Base camp. What can I say, we were lucky to experience a perfect view of Everest. Breathtaking!

New Zealand

What was most remarkable to you about New Zealand?

I don’t think I’ve ever come across a country so idyllic. There was perfectionism in everything. From the beautiful sandy beaches to the what seemed like manicured landscapes. Even the sheep looked well groomed! New Zealand took our breath away. We took a road trip all the way around the South Islands starting in Christchurch and ending in Kaikoura. It was an amazing three weeks staying in idyllic hideaways and experiencing golden savannahs, majestic mountain scenery and stunning wildlife.

Indonesia

You experienced the spiritual life of Indonesia… what was that like?

Indonesia was so unlike anything I had expected. It’s incredibly diverse, has great history and offers a mix of experiences owing to it having thousands of islands. We of course ended up in Bali where we lost ourselves in the bohemian lifestyle, temples and lush scenery. But there was one place I’d always wanted to go. Sulawesi. It’s a mysterious almost other-worldly place and renowned for it’s elaborate funeral ceremonies and buffalo sacrifice. The Torajan highlanders practice an ancient religion known as Alok to Dolo, which has its roots in animism. I was lucky enough (or not depending on your point of view) to witness a funeral ceremony. Though challenging to watch animals being sacrificed, it was beyond educational and I learned a great deal about an ancient religion and people I would never have come across in my lifetime.

Myanmar

In Myanmar, what were the feelings you had while visiting the Temples of Bagan?

Bagan was like being transported to a time of ancient kingdoms and civilisations. Dusty gravel roads, stunning temples and unspoilt scenes of farmers working in rice fields. There was romance to Bagan of days gone by. The Temples of Bagan at sunrise didn’t disappoint either. As dawn broke we saw hundreds of mist-covered temples appear and as the sun finally came up casting an orange glow over everything, I was blown away by the tranquillity of it all. The icing on the cake was when some hot air balloons were released in the distance and it was photography heaven! Utterly sublime.

Of all these experiences, which cuisine did you most enjoy?

I have to say Malaysia has great food! With its diverse mix of people and the influence of Chinese and Indian flavours, you really can’t go wrong. I remember just constantly thinking about what I was going to eat in Kuala Lumpur. I’d recommend going to Sri Paandi in Little India to taste their mouthwatering Chilli Crab, Also Jalan Alor in the heart of KL, has a great atmosphere at night. It’s a great place to hang out, have a beer and dive into some morning glory and chicken wings at Wong ah Wah.

Your company Jewelled Buddha is deeply connected to Asia and the well-being of women in local communities. Please tell us the story, introduce us to your ethical product line, and share your stories of positive impact with us.

The inspiration for Jewelled Buddha started whilst I was travelling. I had recently quit my 9-5 corporate job and feeling somewhat dissatisfied with life, my husband and I decided to take the big leap and backpack around Asia for a year. Throughout our travels we came across women artisans weaving fine textiles. At the beginning I hadn’t planned on setting up a business, but a few months into my travels I could feel a change in perspective occurring. Witnessing how people lived, exploring different countries and living out of a backpack, gave me a deep appreciation of what I had and of my life. I realised I didn’t need so much stuff in my life and it inspired me to think of a more ethical approach to life and people.

After a challenging period of transition when we returned to the UK, I set up my business. Jewelled Buddha partners exclusively with social enterprises and brands who share our respect for people and the planet. We have a sophisticated edit of luxury fashion accessories and clothing from around the world. Our tagline, Style Made To Empower, inspires people to choose ethically produced fashion and empowers marginalised artisans to earn a sustainable income breaking the cycle of poverty.

Our product line includes upcycled fashion accessories such as one-of-a-kind sari scarves, sari necklaces and bags made out of recycled plastic bottles. Why travel off-season?

For most people, traveling is something that happens during the holidays—when everyone gets time off school, work, and other commitments to spend a week or two at a popular destination.

But for those that are lucky enough to have time and availability to travel without the packs, off-season travel should absolutely be your go-to. Also known as shoulder season, traveling during slow or non-peak months can lead to money savings, reduced crowds, and a more authentic experience.

Added bonus: When traveling off season, you’ll be treasured by those in travel and hospitality—especially small businesses, who are grateful for your patronage when business is slow. You are contributing to their well-being as well as that of the local community. Win-win for everyone!

Off-season places to consider

A perfect example of an off-season travel destination is Iceland. One of their main sources of revenue is travel, and during the warm summer months the prices for popular activities, rentals, and hotels can double. In the off-season, flights are extremely affordable! It’s also the best time to see the Northern Lights. You have the chance to enjoy the natural beauty of the destination without being followed around by other tourists and tour groups. Plus, the wintery glow creates an ethereal, magical experience.

You can also save money by picking a sustainable travel destination such as an eco-tour in South Africa. Visiting in September means less crowds, lower prices, and more chances to see wildlife in the dry season.

Traveling to Italy off-season allows you to experience the local culture in a more authentic way. Rather than being surrounded by tourists, you are more likely to experience life alongside local residents. You won’t have to wait in long lines, and you can walk freely through the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Pure heaven!

A few things to keep in mind

There are a few negatives to traveling in the shoulder season, but these all depend on your perspective of a “negative”! Visiting in the cooler months can mean more rain, wind, or snow, depending on your destination of choice. Low season in Bali or Thailand can mean tropical downpours. But visit in June and you get minimal rain and peaceful surroundings about a month before the majority of the tourists arrive in July.

In towns and areas that thrive on tourism, it can also mean that some destinations close for the season. This is common in seasonal travel spots like the Rocky Mountains, where hiking trails and roads close in the winter but ski slopes open up.

If you travel in the off season, you also need to be mindful of flight patterns. Certain airlines fly to destinations only a few months out of the year. But you can capitalize on budget-friendly flights and perhaps an empty seat or two next to you on the plane!

Milan, Italy

Europe has some of the best traditional Christmas markets in the whole world. Berlin, Germany

At the Christmas Market at Sophienstraße you'll find all kinds of sustainable gifts and eco treats. Organic, fair trade, locally sourced and handcrafted... bratwurst, waffles, mulled wine and vegan dishes are served.

Or you can head for the rooftops, reindeer style, at the Christmas Market at Klunkerkranich. Known for their handmade local gifts, music and treats, and obviously for the view, this is a Berlin favorite.

San Francisco Bay Area, CA

The San Francisco Bay Area loves to get into the holiday spirit! San Francisco has an outdoor skating rink and a giant gingerbread house at the Fairmont Hotel to light up the eyes of little ones. If you want to give yourself a little holiday treat, sign up for the North Beach Holiday Wine Walk, where boutique wine vendors open their doors for guests to sample wine and shop… this year honoring immigrants in Little Italy.

We love to travel. We want to see the world… this beautiful, vast planet of ours, in the little vacation time we may have.

But how much do we really see when we’re traveling?

We hear of all the places we should go and we don’t want to miss out. All the landmarks are a 'must see', so we plan, we schedule, we abide by timetables. Our trip is filled with arrivals and departures rather than deeply memorable moments. If you think about it, how different is this from our rushed, daily lives?

Maybe productivity needs to take a back seat for a bit. Slow, more mindful travel may be just what the doctor ordered.

What Is Slow Travel?

Slow travel is just as it sounds. It’s the process of slowing down and being more mindful of our travel experiences. Rather than rushing from place to place to get all the 'sights' in, slow travel involves relishing each moment and being fully present with our surroundings.

We may see fewer places, but we will more fully experience the places we visit.

It's just like the slow food movement. When we cook with care, using raw, whole foods (or enjoy a slow cooked meal prepared by our hosts) and practice mindful eating we more fully enjoy the true flavors. We understand more about the creation of the dish, the local culture, and enjoy it at a whole new level. With slow travel, we take in more of the sights and sounds. We enjoy the company of those around us. We connect. It’s possible to gain an experience that may have been missed otherwise.

What’s Involved in Slow Travel?

Everything connected to your travel experience is involved in slow travel. When booking accommodation, don’t just pick the cheapest place you find online. Take time to learn more about the unique qualities of an establishment, the people who run and own the business, and how much they celebrate the local culture. Find a place with a kind, inviting atmosphere.

And rather than referring to guidebooks that primarily reference major attractions, why not play it by ear? Get advice from your knowledgeable hosts. Play! It’s a bit more adventurous but you may just find some lovely gems, off the beaten path!

Slow travel means learning more about local traditions and the natural environment. You experience the authenticity of a place. History, legends, and lore are shared throughout your stay... You find the rhythm of a place. You become a part of that place.

What are the Results of Slow Travel?

Ultimately, you'll have a more fulfilling, memorable experience. You'll feel you gained more for your money (with less stress). Slow travel can take on an even deeper meaning, becoming a transformative experience. You may find that slow travel changes your life for the better, bringing you more peace, more enlightenment, and a greater understanding of yourself and others. A 'Return to Service' for Retired Airplanes

When it comes to minimizing your impact on the world around you, one of the worst things you can do, it seems, is to travel. The carbon footprint, the disposable products, the excess electricity and the list could go on and on. But, as human beings, we can't expect to spend our lives in one spot. This is why Kynder exists, to negate the negative impact of travel and to create instead something beautiful and kind to Earth at the same time. And this is why PLANE Industries exists too.

A Sustainable Heritage

PLANE Industries was founded by two brothers who decided to do something about all of the old airplanes that were being put out of commission and would eventually go into a landfill pile or be incinerated. They were taught from an early age to reuse and repurpose everything by their father. Their initial venture was with only a few parts and mostly just to see what they could come up with. But their creativity and ingenuity brought them adoring customers who now are loyal followers of the company and have inspired the duo to create more and more unique items using recycled airplane parts which they sell on their website www.planeindustries.com.

The Craft of Aircraft Upcycling

The company makes everything from the old airplanes, creating quite the list of products for their customers. Having started with furniture, the line has expanded to luggage and electronic accessories and now to desk accessories. Each piece is crafted with exquisite craftsmanship, by hand, and each one is droolworthy.

As a traveler, their luggage selection is a must-see and although they don't have large pieces yet (we're crossing our fingers for some soon), the collection includes a weekender bag, messenger bag and a rucksack (or backpack). Each is made with material salvaged from the seats of old airplanes and is durable, lightweight, and flame and stain resistant which makes the pieces perfect for another lifetime of travel. The leather inserts and handles are made of vegetable tanned Italian leather and the interior is lined with 100% organic cotton. The electronic accessories are also made of the same fabric and include a laptop sleeve, tablet sleeve and phone sleeve. 

High Design for Travel, Home & Hospitality

The pieces in their furniture collection are each unique and take advantage of displaying one part of an airplane. Their clock collection features the airplane doors while the bar and chairs are made of the air intakes from various aircraft. PLANE uses both commercial and military planes for their creations and not one disappoints. The furniture collection also includes lighting pieces and a drink cabinet. All in all, the furniture collection is what man-cave dreams are made of.

The desktop collection includes a fuselage phone holder, cowling candle holder, cowling pen holder, a cowling catch-all and desktop wings one of which is a pen holder and the other a paperweight. These pieces make use of the smaller parts of an airplane and it's great to see that PLANE is expanding their products to make use of everything a plane has to offer.

Being an eco traveler is becoming easier and easier. People are realizing the need to take care of the nature we're going to see and take pictures of and the success of PLANE Industries proves that their ideas of reusing the one thing most people travel by these days are resonating with more and more people. So go ahead, take that trip you've been wanting to. Travel to see that beautiful place. Explore another country. It's really quite simple.

We’ve reached a point in human evolution where we understand we play a part in the preservation (or destruction) of the planet we call home. Thankfully, this awareness has led many of us to take greater care in our daily lives as well as when traveling.

As a concerned citizen with many years experience in the travel industry, this awareness became the driving force for my creating Kynder, the new eco-conscious travel platform that exclusively promotes sustainable and ethical hospitality establishments.

In addition to patronizing eco-conscious establishments, there are many ways you can care for our planet whilst traveling. Here are ten simple tips to help you travel more sustainably, help curb climate change and support local communities:

1. STAY SUSTAINABLY. Seek eco-conscious, fair labor accommodation and eateries when traveling. This amplifies your sustainable impact and supports the well-being of local communities.

2. SEEK LOCAL PURVEYANCE. Reduce your carbon footprint by purchasing goods that were sourced from nearby farms and shops, with minimal transit from the source to you.

3. WALK. Invest in a good pair of eco walking shoes and walk as much as possible. Learn the public transport system before traveling so when you’re tuckered out you can hop on a bicycle or bus rapid transit (BRT).

4. BYOWB. Bring your own BPA-free filtration water bottle (and an extra for your trip companion in case they forget). Ditch the disposable water bottles that have become such an environmental hazard and save money at the same time.

5. BUY LOCALLY HANDCRAFTED SOUVENIRS. When selecting the perfect souvenir to take back to loved ones, invest in the local community by purchasing gifts made by local artisans.

6. SEEK LOCAL TOUR GUIDES. Local guides will likely be able to show you hidden gems off the beaten path that may not be found in guide books or with large tour operators. Major landmarks are wonderful to see but there are so many other ways to experience the richness of a local culture.

7. AC DETOX. If you’re accustomed to using air conditioning to stay cool, reduce your energy consumption by turning the AC down or off in your accommodation. Instead, pack cooler, breathable clothing made with sustainable fabrics like organic cotton, sip chilled beverages, and open the windows to let the breeze flow through.

8. PLANT A TREE. There are several organizations that will plant trees to offset the carbon footprint you left behind by traveling. For as little as $1 per tree, you can be a powerful advocate for reducing environmental degradation.

9. STAYCATION. There are likely many brilliant eco-conscious hospitality establishments in your own backyard or within a close radius. Explore and enjoy new sustainable experiences nearby, as if you were a tourist in your own town.

10. PREACH IT. You’re out socializing, enjoying communal tables, perhaps hostel life, why not bring up the topic of sustainability? Discuss, explore, inspire… and make new friends whilst doing it!

Would you like to awaken to this Swiss panorama?

Stunning. We arrived to Saas-Fee after dark so we were unable to see very much beyond the twinkling lights of the village... but the next morning, THIS was our phenomenal view from room 304.

Before we wax poetic about the remarkable and unique wellnessHostel4000, let me first ask, have you ever been to Switzerland? I had not. Switzerland is so pretty and so epic that it seems like a fairy tale. Driving past the steep hillside vineyards overlooking the shimmering lake, feeling awestruck by the alps' grandeur, delighting in the charm of its alpine chalets, bright pink lupine, wild forest, well you get the idea.

Destination Saas-Fee

We wound our way up a narrow, curvy (sometimes hairpin turn) two lane road toward the village of Saas-Fee, elevation 5,900 feet. The village is nestled up against the alps so you will take the same road back down to leave. Known as a ski village not too far from the Matterhorn (30 km as the crow flies), Saas-Fee is also beautiful in the summer time. Nature lovers, tree huggers and eco travelers, you will always find endless soul-satisfying activities here!

If driving, the only way to enter the car-free village of Saas-Fee is through one of the cleanest, most scenic parking structures I've ever seen. You can pull up to the front for luggage unloading and then drive to find a parking spot with unbelievable views. Even the restroom was sustainable, try it and you'll see what I mean. Switzerland, your sustainability is impressive.

A hostel for all seasons

As you can see from the photos, wellnessHostel4000 is sleek, modern, and as we'll discuss, ecologically designed. The lobby lounge is a cozy place to relax fireside and the spacious dining area offers a comfortable space to eat and enjoy the view.

We were kindly welcomed even though we were late arrivals (read on for our cautionary road tale) and we headed to our private room with en-suite bath. We were pleased to find a pristine room complete with a modern table for two generously set with fresh fruit, bottled water and healthful energy bars. This was especially appreciated as we were two tired and hungry travelers!

Eco inside and out

Named after the surrounding Alps at an elevation 4000 meters, wellnessHostel4000 was built with great consideration for environmental standards to fulfill the Minergie Eco standard. Accordingly, the hostel was built using readily available raw materials including the use of low environmental impact and recycled materials. The Minergie Eco standard also dictates that electricity usage be minimized in favor of natural daylight and solar power, and that indoor air quality be improved by minimizing building material pollutant emissions and limiting ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. In 2015, wellnessHostel4000 was the recipient of the "Watt d'Or" award for exceptional achievement in energy reduction.

This is a hostel?

We enjoyed a crisp, clean and delightfully quiet private room with very comfortable beds. Unlike other hostels I have experienced, this was one of the best night's sleep I have ever had. Dorm-style accommodation is also available and the room/bed rates are very reasonable, especially for Switzerland.

The immaculate, high-design spa and wellness center are of very special note and are available at an additional fee. Complete with a high-tech workout gym, indoor pool, hydromassage showers and saunas with a vast forest view, you'll have health and wellness at your fingertips no matter the weather.

Select your hydromassage shower in the themes "summer rain," "freezing fog (!)," "mountain stream" or "waterfall." Also available is an herbal steam bath, foot bath, whirlpool, relaxation room and massage therapy. A full-sized pool offers activities and classes for all including little ones.

Wonderfully family friendly, the hostel was bustling with families during our visit. The included morning buffet breakfast in the communal dining room offered a self-service coffee and juice station, a variety of cereals, fruit, yogurt, and other hearty fare to ensure we were well nourished!

Plan your trip

The hostel was all booked up for certain nights in late July when we were selecting our date and is quite popular at ski season, so we would suggest booking in advance. With the "Citizen’s Pass" in summer, guests enjoy complimentary use of the cableways and PostBus in the Saastal valley, a lovely addition.

*A word of wisdom: We entered via France and realized about 30 minutes in that without a paid motorway sticker we were risking a large fine from the highway patrol. We highly suggest you do not enter Switzerland without having purchased this motorway 'vignette' pass (36.50 euros) in advance or make sure you purchase one in the correct lane at border entry (which is not clearly marked). Although they are supposedly available for purchase at gas stations, every gas station we passed was either closed (it was a Sunday) or sold out. It took us hours to find one but we finally did!

If you're reading this blog, you're probably at least somewhat concerned with living a sustainable lifestyle and you probably already know that traveling is one of the most unsustainable things you can do. Words such as greenhouse gases, pollution, increasing carbon footprints and disposable containers come to mind—all words that are associated with "no-no's" in the environmentally friendly world.

That's all trying to be changed as the United Nations declared 2017 the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. The decision is going to be bringing about a lot of changes and hopefully will have more people participating in ecotourism. So find yourself some vacation time, book your flight and pack that suitcase. Your very eco-friendly suitcase, right?

Patagonia

A leader in the environmentally-friendly clothing category, Patagonia also offers messengers, weekend bags, duffel bags and travel bags in all shapes and sizes that range in price from $79 - $349. Their durable fabric has a water repellent finish and is bluesign approved which means that harmful substances have been eliminated right from the beginning of the manufacturing process. Patagonia also promotes fair labor practices, safe working conditions and environmental responsibility—making it not only an environmentally-friendly company but also an ethical one.

Incase

The sleek look of the Ecoya duffel bag from Incase is sure to appeal to those of you also looking for a stylish piece of luggage. Made of an environmentally- friendly material, called Ecoya, which is eco-dyed yarn, the production of the material helps to conserve the release of CO2 and COD when compared to generic fabrication of textiles. The material is also superior in other ways, such as being fade resistant when exposed to light, water or washing. The Ecoya duffel bag retails for $149.95 but is currently on sale for $59.95.

Hadaki

This fun collection is created with water repellant exteriors and an interior made of environmentally-friendly materials. All of the Hadaki products are free of AZO, Phthalates/DEHP, DBP, BOP and other harmful chemicals. Their luggage pieces range in price from $70 - $200, but they also have other products such as purses, bags, totes and makeup bags. The company is based in New Orleans and their fun prints are sure to make anyone smile and make you a standout in the airport crowd.

Heys

Although Heys doesn't create all of its luggage from eco-friendly material, they do have one collection that is made from 100% recycled plastic, called the EcoCase. The company is dedicated to creating high-fashion luggage pieces, so you can bet that their EcoCase collection has been created with that in mind as well. Available in grey and navy—if you're looking for a hardback luggage set that is also stylish and eco-friendly, then you've met your match.

Osprey Packs

Osprey doesn't make their product from eco-friendly materials, but they do strive to create a sustainable environment within their company by using recycled materials for their packaging needs, creating products without BPA, PVC/phthalates and triclosan as well as making sure their products are built to last for a lifetime which ensures that you waste less. The company is also very committed to fair labor. With an office in Vietnam where all their production takes place, the founder Mike Pfotenhauer lives there so he can oversee production and company employees. Prices for their travel luggage range in price from $70 - $380 and include rolling packs, duffel bags and convertible bags.

Everlane

The highly modern company has options for both men's and women's travel luggage and has high standards set for their manufacturing factories. They ensure fair labor and safe practices and have a policy for transparent pricing which means that you'll pay less for the same style of product at Everlane than you would at another retailer. Although they don't use eco-friendly material (most of their travel pieces are nylon), their transparency policies have earned them a soft spot in environmentalists' hearts. So, if you want something that will withstand the test of time but aren't quite ready to jump into eco-friendly material waters, at least support ethical practices and buy Everlane. Their products range in price from $58 - $330 and includes several styles of backpacks and weekenders.

I don't know about you guys, but I have a bucket list of countries to visit that's three feet long, so I'm keeping this list in mind for next year when the traveling starts. My family is in need of a good set of luggage and I know that I'll feel a lot better traveling with one of the above, knowing that I'm still doing my part even when I'm out and about in an unfamiliar city. And yes, I do have a favorite. Although, I might just get one of each—you know, just to make sure. What's you guys' favorite?

The business of flying is inherently not “eco-friendly.”

Besides emitting particulates and gasses, air carriers are notorious for producing high amounts of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and are considered one of the greatest culprits of climate change and global dimming. Top it off water vapors, contrails, hydrocarbons and a long list of oxides and black carbon, and you have a toxic cocktail of chemicals zooming through the sky.

In summary, flying receives a low score as a way to travel sustainably.

While the aviation industry is working on bio-fueled planes, we are still a long way away from a carbon-neutral flight experience. A flight from NYC to Europe emits 2-3 tons of CO2 per person.

It is not just the airplane itself causing the environmental stressors — the in-flight experience can also contribute a great deal of waste.

Most travelers are not aware that factors, including what class they choose to fly, can play into your carbon footprint. Premium classes like Business and First are three and nine times (respectively) higher than Economy class flights in terms of their carbon footprint due to the amount of space they take up. The more people that are on a flight, the smaller the collective impact it is — albeit the more uncomfortable a flight experience it may be! Increased carbon emissions can also lead to more in-flight turbulence, which ultimately can cause more injury and fatalities.

If you are someone who travels frequently and who also cares about how to curb your carbon footprint, there are ways you can help manage the impact.

While it starts at home with driving less, taking public transportation and a slue of other ways, carbon offset programs are the most direct way to tackle flight emissions.

What are carbon offsets?

According to Terra Pass, carbon offsetting is defined as “certificate representing the reduction of one metric ton (2,205 lbs) of carbon dioxide emissions, the principal cause of climate change.” Essentially, by putting your dollar towards free or renewable energy programs like solar energy, deforestation management, and wind turbines, you are making up for your personal carbon footprint while flying.

Carbon offset projects help to reduce the greenhouse gasses by either capturing and destroying the gasses (methane capture), storing them (sequestering) or producing renewable energy sources (renewing).

Where can I purchase carbon offsets?

There are many programs on the market to choose from in terms of purchasing. It’s often hard to know which ones are doing the most good and low-quality offsets can end up making the problem worse.

In the case of farm-powered offsets, it is essential to confirm that the land is owned by an actual farmer and not a conglomerate. Unfortunately, there are fake companies collecting money for programs that do not exist.

There is also quite a bit of controversy around whether or not a few dollars can really undo the damage of flying. The short answer is yes.

While the long term answer is to find alternatives to flying, if all passengers bought carbon offsets, the collective effect will help. How do you know if a program is trustworthy? To start look to see if they are Voluntary Gold Standard or Voluntary Carbon Standard certified. Both are excellent markers of having gone through a high-standard certification process. Climate Action Reserve (CAR) is another certification to look for.

1) Terra Pass: Perhaps one of the more notable programs, Terra Pass makes it easy for the user to know exactly where their money is going. They let you know when a program is sold out and you can even contact an advisor to go over ways to maximize your impact. The website includes a footprint calculator and offers solutions for businesses who do a lot of air travel.

2) Atmosfair: This German company sets the standard for transparency. They promise to deliver meaningful offset programs, by not offsetting, “CO2 from electricity created using fossil fuels because, with green electricity, there is a CO2-free alternative that can already be purchased”. For travelers who like to take cruises, you can also purchase carbon credits through Atmosfair, which other companies don’t offer.

3) SCS Global Services: This site is a catalog of verified carbon offset programs throughout the world. They specialize in promoting forest management programs and works as a third-party environmental and sustainability certification organization. You can also view a list of sustainable seafood fisheries and a green products guide. They are your one-stop shop for not just carbon offsets, but a registry of sustainably run businesses.

Choose your carbon credits with care, use local transportation in your travel destination as much as possible and practice slow travel where you can and you can rest assured knowing you are doing your part.

You’ve likely come across the term “fair trade.” You will usually see it connected to chocolate and coffee, but you can also find it with fresh fruit, seafood, sugar, and many other ingredients and products. While there may be extra cost involved (but fair trade products are often priced competitively), that extra cost is so worth the investment. Here’s a look at why you need to opt for fair trade more often.

What Exactly Is Fair Trade?

Fair trade is just as it sounds. Producers of ingredients get a fair price for trading. Rather than receiving pennies to the dollar (if they’re lucky), they will get a fair and more liveable amount. Farmers and workers around the world get a better deal, can live happier lives, and enjoy necessary protections.

In addition to fair payment, fair trade certification certifies fair labor that includes good working conditions, no discrimination, no child labor, and no forced labor. Transparency and accountability are paramount. Opportunities are provided for disadvantaged producers, and respect for the environment is also of great importance.

The idea of fair trade stretches globally. There are companies in all societies making sure that farmers and workers are treated honestly and fairly while promoting sustainable environmental practices.

Why Should You Buy Fair Trade?

But fair trade is more expensive, right? Perhaps, but not necessarily. Any additional cost however is more than worth the investment. When you buy fair trade, you know that relatively more of your money goes towards the farmers, it's not just the manufacturing company and its stakeholders who will benefit from your purchase. You also contribute to a more equal and just society. You show that life is more than just saving a few cents in your culture, but about creating a fair and happier life for people around the world.

Buying fair trade means you’re setting up a sustainable future. You're empowering a future generation to continue to produce food and other products like cotton, while protecting and nurturing the environment to meet ever growing demands.

How Do You Know You’re Getting Fair Trade?

Look out for the Fair Trade Certified label. It’s one of the most recognizable labels in the world, and is one of the most reputable ethical certifications. A Serendipitous Meeting

As I searched for hospitality gems to become part of the Kynder platform, I came across the beautiful Ratna Ling Retreat in Cazadero, CA. As I studied further, I realized the retreat center had been founded by the Tibetan lama, Tarthang Tulku. That name instantly rang a bell. How did I know that name??

I ran to my bedroom and pulled a book off the book shelf that my great uncle Jimmy had given me called Mind in Buddhist Psychology. I opened the book to find the book signed to my aunt and uncle... by Tarthang Tulku in 1974.

I had chills. I quickly typed up an email to the marketing department at Ratna Ling. It wasn't long before Alisa and I were on a call, hitting it off instantly. When I later spoke with Rosalyn, Co-Director of the Ratna Ling Retreat, she told me she remembered my aunt and uncle. Serendipity.

The Ratna Ling Retreat felt the same. We are over the moon to have them at the heart of our Kynder mission—and I know my Uncle Jimmy would be just as pleased!

A Return to (Your) Wild Nature

When you stay at Ratna Ling, you journey off the beaten path into the wilderness of Sonoma County, California. Space and time open up. Your breath deepens. You remember what it feels like to slow down. You remember you.

Day Trippin' in the East Bay

Berkeley and Oakland are two of the greatest cities in the San Francisco Bay Area, hands down. So what would an ideal day look like? Tara's Organic Ice Cream owner and artist Tara Esperanza recommends a few artistic/eco places that we think sound pretty darn awesome.

Treat - Ice Cream & Pottery

First things first. Tara's Organic Ice Cream because if you're in the neighborhood, trust us, you don't want to miss out. Sustainability and artistry are at the heart of her ice creamery. Peek at the TOIC spotlight page for more info. She has your favorite classic flavors along with exotic, epicurean concoctions like Golden Goddess (fresh ginger, turmeric and cumin), Andes Delight Sorbet (coconut, superfood Maca root and cinnamon), and black sesame. Pile your scoops into an organic, freshly handmade waffle cone and you'll be in heaven.

Your next stop is actually right inside Tara's Organic Ice Cream so you don't have to go far! She explains, "In my Berkeley shop we have a permanent display and ceramics for sale by Kristen Gentilucci of Stubborn Dog Pottery. Kristen manages the space and is constantly replenishing what sells. They are all one of a kind! All the spoon handles that she creates are of driftwood that she collects in nature... <3 her!"

Kristen speaks about her craft and her passion for nature-inspired pottery: "Pottery is my craft; a hobby that consumes every inch of cabinet space. Functionality is my model; minimalist is my style, and the great outdoors is my inspiration. I'm in love with the natural clay body surface and organic form, but it is sparks of color that drive my soul towards happiness. My spoons handles are crafted from wood sticks found in the high sierras and local beaches." We're absolutely in love with her work, you can see from her photos just how beautiful her creations are!

Time to eat! You've worked up an appetite after a day out and about, and we've got you covered. Look no further than our Kynder Collective member Summer Kitchen + Bakeshop. Proprietors Paul and Charlene place community, local food purveyors, and slow cooking at the heart of their establishment. They believe "As chefs, owners, and parents we have a strong commitment to creating an environmentally responsible business" and they have truly created a remarkable cafe in the Berkeley community.

Just a few suggestions to whet your appetite:

• Organic Beech Mushroom, Leek, Truffle Tartufata and Burrata pizza

• Mindful Meats West Marin County Organic Grass-Fed Beef Burger with Blue Cheese, Caramelized Onions, House Made Pickles and Wild Arugula

Mission Golden 30

You may be wondering how Kynder came to be. How did we find our very first Kynder Collective Members? How in the world did we convince these San Francisco Bay Area business owners and management to join our hospitality mission/travel platform—when we had no proof, no metrics, no guarantee? All 13 members on the platform joined us pre-launch. These kind souls believed in the mission. They took a chance. We lovingly refer to our inaugural Kynder Collective members as our renegade 'first adopters'.

What are 'first adopters'? They are the small group of innovators that believe in a new company before anyone else does. As the brilliant market disrupter Seth Godin says, "Early adopters want to buy a different experience than people who identify as the mass market do. Innovators want something fresh, exciting, new and interesting. The mass market doesn't." They want pre-established, proven, mainstream. As a grassroots travel company fueled by heart and lots of coffee, our first adopters made our launch possible, less than one month ago, April 20, 2017.

Our hospitality revolution began with a vintage Polaroid camera, Impossible film, a mystery invitation and our two fearless adventurers, Ben and Kayla. It was Mission Golden 30. Read on.

The Kynder-Tuscan Connection

Backstory: It just so happens that our founder, Louree Maya is based in Tuscany, Italy. She and her husband are set to open a (medieval) eco-bnb this summer, after an intense year of restoration.

So, the best way Louree could think of to introduce Kynder and offer her own kind hospitality to other hospitality businesses was to offer them a complimentary stay. She invested in a vintage Polaroid camera from Etsy and Impossible film to create old school photographs of her B&B. She created a mysterious invitation complete with a "no two the same" Polaroid snapshot and an antique key and shipped them off to the Unites States.

The Golden 30/20/6

Who were the Golden 30? They were a group of San Francisco hotels, restaurants, coffee houses, street food, sweet and ice cream shops that seemed to represent the best in hospitality. The Golden 30 was reduced to the Golden 20 to streamline the operation, and the covert mission commenced. Several invitations were mailed. Eleven were delivered in person by adventurous Ben and Kayla.

First stop, Sixth Course Artisan Confections in San Francisco's Mission District. The idea was to festively connect these businesses to each other by purchasing Sixth Course dark chocolate salted caramel truffles and delivering them to whoever accepted the invitation at each business along the delivery route. Every staff member who accepted them were delighted to receive the gift.

Our Golden 6

Out of the Golden 20, 30% became members of the Kynder Collective. Not too shabby. Our Golden 20 became our Golden 6. A few of the others were compelled to inquire about the mystery invitation, but never responded after that, some declined, and some never responded at all. We don’t know why exactly, but what we do know is that those who first decided to join us have become the wind beneath our wings and they inspire us every day.

After Mission Golden 30/20, we reached out to another group of hospitality establishments between February and April. A further 7 establishments joined us and we couldn't be happier that they also believed in our mission. These 13 establishments form the heart of the Kynder movement and we are deeply grateful.
