What is Kiai actually? You may often here it as “Aiyah! and Hiyah!” when someone is performing a technique. When I first heard of it, battle cry pop quickly in my mind. You know, to build up aggression and fighting spirit.

Yesterday I keep on forgeting to Kiai every after a technique we practice - that opens up a topic for our sensei. According to him, the main purpose of Kiai is for breathing. When you breath at the right time, you hit harder. But other than that, he stated that…

Kiai can

Up the ante of your fighting spirit

Pychological warfare here, you can look to be more powerful with Kiai

Prepare the upper body for a blow because the air exhales

On the other hand, some people say Kiai has this, uhm… “Power”.

Quote from the video…

The body is approximately 70% water. An expression of kiai causes ripples in this water, which stills the opponent’s energy.

Argh, this post is a bit late. I was supposed to post this yesterday but after I got home from my Karate session, I laid down to get some rest. Funny thing was, I fell down sleep - the next minute it was morning!

Anyhow, here it is Kyokushin Kan geris…

What we’ve done so far

Hiza geri (Knee kick)

Kin geri (Groin kick)

Mae geri (Front kick)

Mawashi geri (Roundhouse kick)

Kakato geri (Heel kick)

Ago jodan geri (High kick to the chin)

Yoko geri (Side kick)

Ushiro geri (Backwards kick)

Oroshi soto kakato geri (Downwards outside heel kick - axe kick)

Oroshi uchi kakato geri (Downwards inside heel kick - axe kick)

Other Kyokushin Kan kicks

Age kakato ushiro geri (Rising heel backwards kick)

Jodan uchi haisoku geri (Upper inside instep kick to jaw)

Kake geri (Hooking kick)

Kansetsu geri (Joint kick)

Ushiro mawashi geri (Reverse roundhouse kick)

I still don’t get the part where you twist your hips to get more power to your kicks. The axe kick was easy for me though, I can get my feet head level and can move it around, inside or outside. Other than that, I’m still workin’ on it ;-)

Just so you won’t miss the things we’ve done in the last 8 sessions or so, here’s a recap.

1st-2nd session

Nothing much really, we were just told to follow what we can. We did Mas Oyama’s warmup, tried to handstand, knuckle push-ups, sit-ups and this weird kind of stance called “Sanchin Dachi” (Click here to see what it looks like). According to our sensei (Who’s top 8 over 500 Kyokushin fighters in his division), this stance is used to concentrate our force so every attack blows more power.

3rd-5th session

I was able to do the Sanchin Dachi a little bit more proper and was going smoothly on the warm-up.

This time, we were taught some Kata - leg movements at the moment and hands on our belt.

6th session

Kata with punches now.

7th-present session

We applied “Geri” or kicks to our Kata and warm-up was kinda like breathing now. I can’t stand long enough though with my hands.

That’s bout it, for those who are wondering what kinds of kicks we’ve done so far, I’ll whip out a post later :-)

On the 2nd month of our school (I’m on 9th grade and our school starts every 2nd week of June) I saw this guy who was doin some Kata (choreographed forms, mostly used in martial arts) in our school lab. I approached him and asked “Are you doin martial arts?” In a snap he answered “Yep, I did some before, I’m a blue belt in Taekwondo.”

After that incident, I walked away and never talked to the guy again. Then a month passed - we got a bit closer because my other friend knows him. A time came where he opened a topic bout martial arts, after a while he flip open his wallet and showed me this gold id “Assistant instructor, Kyokushin Kan”. Dang! That shook me a little bit, the blue belt thing was just something to cover up his black belt!

To make the long story short, he invited me to join their dojo and as a martial art enthusiast I didn’t pass up the chance!

I started just this August and is probably on the 8th session right now because we only have sessions every Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

I’ll share every tidbit I learn from every session, but tata for now. Gotta do some stretching ;-)

Bout me

On another note www.iamblackbelt.com is another sister site of Make Money Online With A 13-Year Old besides Eat Food Online With A 13-Year Old.

A spot-on introduction bout me… I’m Carl Ocab, 15-years old from the beautiful archipelago Philippines. I started blogging at the age 13 on www.carlocab.com.

As you may have noticed, the title is still “With A 13-Year Old” why not 15? I didn’t changed it because I’m very well known for that right now. When you say “Make Money Online With A 13-Year Old” people will quickly recognize that that’s me, Carl Ocab. Changing it to 15 would mess up the whole thing ;-)
