Kimya Dawson & Aesop Rock come together as The Uncluded to create the collaborative album Hokey Fright.

At first I was a little hesitant, not knowing what to expect from the unusual collaboration. It was like I was listening to nursery rhymes dubbed over by a rap artist.

The fuse of Kimya’s sweet melancholy singing with Aesop Rock’s stern vocals complete 16 tracks on Hokey Fright. They both deliver clever verses over quirky instrumentals which make for a creative mash-up. While Kimya sweetly sings her way through the tracks, Aesop uses word play masterfully. Tracks like “Teleprompters” and “Delicate Cycle” provide lighthearted instrumentals, while the musicians deliver thought-provoking verses. Meanwhile at the opposite pole, “Superheroes” & “WYHUOM” are carefree and playful tracks.
Some may say that Aesop rapping over Kimya’s strumming guitar and folk singing is awkward, but I believe that this is what makes the album unique and refreshing. Embrace the odd combination! They were destined for greatness once the folk singer and rapper joined forces to create a musical experiment that has set a standard unmet by other artists. This is a perfect album to listen to this summer while riding your bike down the block– headphones in, real world out. Give it a listen!

My situation involved receiving a small package in the mail from my pops the other day, and inside the cardboard box was a small recyclable doggie-poo bag. Despite that informality, I found gold within this doggie bag - my dad’s radio on-air tapes from the 80′s! My family and myself hail from Sacramento and that’s where dad did radio when he was in his twenties. Quite a trip that we both got into radio at the same time in our lives at the same age. So as I listen to these old cassette tapes, everything about it a total blast from the past; the guy talking on air is my dad and he sounds just like I do now! I decided to take all of these old tapes and convert them to a digital format with my own introductions and commentary between them. The finished product for pops will be all of his analog air checks neatly compiled onto a CD with his own son’s radio voice talking about it! Better than a Hallmark card and golf balls…

Whether your paterfamilias devoted himself to an art, a tough career, a trade or just his family, make sure to recognize him for that. I’m sure he’ll appreciate it more than anything. And tell him you love him too-even if you do that already.

The year was 2009 and a curious freshman walked into the first staff meeting of the school year held by the legendary KZSC. The vinyl and posters that covered every inch immediately enthralled her. Lois describes her first thoughts after such an experience as being, “I want to hang out here.” And she did. Miss Rosson completed all of her volunteer hours that very quarter, was accepted to the radio class the very next quarter menteeing under Gemini Slim of Indie Babies, and hosted her very first show in the Spring of 2010 under the pleasant and distorted name of Lo-fi(which she proudly uses to this day) bringing doo-wop for the weekend, Saturdaymornings on “Powder Blue Tuxedo.” Lo-fi would go on to host a great number of other shows including “Tin Pan Alley Aftermath” and the show she currently hosts “Celestial Boob Tube.” During her time at the station, Lois also took on leadership roles at KZSC. She was first a member of the Peer Review Committee and has just finished her reign as Program Director of the 2012 to 2013 school year. The saddest news I bring you today is that Lois is leaving KZSC, but on a happier note she is graduating from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a Bachelors degree in Art and History and is also June’s programmer of the month at KZSC. We love you Lois Rosson, are very proud of you and everything you have accomplished, and wish you the very best in all of your endeavors. Catch Lo-fi’s last show on Wednesday June 12th from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. “Celestial Boob Tube” on KZSC, Santa Cruz.
