In this video, Spence takes you “behind the scenes” at the LAB, and give you a rundown of how we create our tutorial videos. With these tools and a little help, even your MOM can be making amazing animation and voice overs in no time!

I’ve setup a method that is easy to replicate each time I want make a new video, which is almost daily. After a lot of experimentation, I found that a clear and consistent voice track is the most important part of a video. Without it, your message is lost because the viewer is distracted by the lack of sound quality.

I use a Blue Snowball microphone (http://www.bluemic.com/snowball), on an articulated Magic Arm Kit from Manfrotto (http://www.manfrotto.us/magic-arm-kit-143a-003-035), so I can swing it in past my imac when I want to record, and swing it away when I’m editing. I use free software known as SoundFlower (http://soundflower.en.softonic.com/mac) to manage the input and output and allow me to switch from recording mode to editing mode worrying about feedback.

To get that great “radio voice”, I feed the microphone input straight into Garage Band (http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/) and then add some equalization, a little reverb, and some voice effects to deepen the tones.

I write my copy using GoogleApps (http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html), and space out the text nicely so that it corresponds with the intonation or emphasis. For example, I use all caps if I want to put the emphasis on a particular word or phrase.

After recording, the initial voice-over track is dropped into Keynote (http://www.apple.com/iwork/keynote/) to act as a guide for how long each animated sequence (slide) should run. This gives me a good sense of the timing required, but will never be as precise as needed for a final product. So, I try to get it as close as possible in Keynote, but then process the final timing at the end, using Screenflow. With Screenflow I tweak at a frame-by-frame level, and that guarantees that the sound and video are perfectly synchronized.

With the timing is “perfect”, I export the movie in iPad preset mode (H.264 and 1280×720 video size) back to Garage Band where I then layer on the audio special effects. The “Final” version is then exported and uploaded to Wistia for encoding and embedding on our various web properties or promotions.

Today we’re featuring the fonts. Did you know that you don’t have to sustain yourself on just one tiny font per site? Because Google has over 270 fonts available, open source, ready to use, and optimized for the web. With the new fonts option inside LabSocial, we’re going to show you here how to get it going on your site. First of all, I want to go ahead and click on google.com/webfonts. And I could start choosing fonts. Now, I can browse these in a variety of ways. Here, I’m showing how to do it by sentence, but I can look by word. I can look by paragraph. I can go in Sentence and type in my own statement and edit it. I could change the font size to look to see how it would be a little bigger or a little smaller. I could do all kinds of things, including search.

Now, in this particular case I’m going to scroll down to find something that looks interesting, and this one right here, Rancho, looks very cool. So I’m going to go ahead and click on Quick Use. Now, it’s going to give me everything I need here to go ahead and use with the LabSocial pack and change my sites from this to this. All right, let’s do it. OK, first thing you need to get started with LabSocial is to copy and paste one snippet of code into your SocialGO Version 2 site. So let’s go over to our SocialGO Version 2 site as it is, and we’re going to go and log in. Now, if I have done that already, it will look like this.

I’m going to click on Website Management, Site Builder. When I do I’ll be taken to the Dashboard on the back side. From there I want to go ahead and click on Setup, and then Advanced Settings. That will take me to the place where I can add the Global Header Code. This little snippet here represents a sample of what your Global Header Code will look like, to enable your LabSocial pack from LabSecrets. Now, your particular one will be different than this, but just remember this is the concept. Pace your snippet of code into your Global Header Code box, and then scroll down. Click on Save Changes.

We’re now ready for part 2. Let’s go ahead and make a page like the Google fonts page I’m showing here. So we go back to our Dashboard, under Website Management, Site Builder. And here in the Dashboard, we’ll go ahead under Setup, Site Builder. This is where we can add some pages. Now, I go ahead and click on Add a page. In this particular case I’ll just add a blank page because we’re going to put some sample content in. And I’ll call this Google Fonts. And if I want, I can change the URL. I’ll click Save.

Next thing I want to do is add 2 custom widgets. The first widget is going to take it from a 2-column layout, where I have a sidebar, to a 1-column. And by the way, yes you already guessed it, that’s one of the features included here. It’s full-width pages. We also have another option that allows you to add multiple columns. We call it, “Columns.” So you not only have 1 full-width, but you also have the ability to have 3 columns, unlike the standard SocialGO, which only gives you, unfortunately, 2. Now, we go back over here to the Site Builder, and we’re going to drag down to the bottom of page. We’re going to take a Custom HTML widget. We’re going to scroll up, drag it in place.

Now, this is the fun part. You don’t have to learn how to code. You just have to know how to copy, paste. It’s so easy. We’re going to go ahead and grab this particular snippet of code and we’re going to paste it into place. Click on Save. Next, we want to go ahead and add some content for the sample. So let’s do that. We’re going to go ahead and grab a text widget. Scroll up, and we’re going to place that text widget right here. And let’s put a little content in here, then I can show you some examples. So we’ll name the title, something like Google Fonts Demonstration, and now we’re going to paste in this. Let’s click Save.

The next step is we need to add some CSS. Now, CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets, and it’s basically a shortcut type of a language that’s used by developers to make things look and feel different. We’re not going to need you to learn it, we just need you to know how to copy and paste it. Now, what we’ve included with your LabSocial pack is all the hosting you need to have the code available. But if you wanted to break out and do more, we’ve also got more features. It’s true. We’ve got our Solo Plan. So by plugging the Solo Plan in, you can super charge your ability. Optimize hosting, advanced content management, open source code base, and unlimited possibilities.

Now, in this particular case what we provide you is an editor that allows you to go ahead and modify the CSS inside of your site on SocialGO. For the purposes of this demonstration, we’re going to do this for fonts. So what you do is you go over here to your sister site, which looks exactly the same by the way, and you’re going to go into the Dashboard. By the way, you might notice that we’ve got the commerce solution here running in the background. If you go ahead and click on Dashboard, it’ll take you to a page that looks something like this. Here’s your Dashboard on the back of your Solo Plan that complements your site. We’re going to go to Plugins, Editor, and you’ll have this advanced code editor. We want to make sure we select the LabSecrets V2 as the plugin to edit.

Now, what we’re going to do is add a little snippet of code here that will get the Google fonts working on the site. The way we get that is we go back to the Google fonts page. Remember we chose Rancho. We’re going to scroll down and click the @import tab right here. We’re going to grab this little bit of code. When we do, we’re going to go to our editor and paste it in place. If I wanted, I can also add a little note to myself using this nomenclature that you’ll be able to copy and paste. It’s kind of a way of saying the stuff below here is for Google fonts styling. Now, what we need to do next is we want to go ahead and apply that to the particular fonts that we pasted in our text widget.

So we go back to Google fonts page, and right below the actual code we find– this is the CSS that we want to use on our particular site. So remember how I pasted into the Site Builder? Open this up. I had those little HTML tags. So I’ll show you again here. I’ve got the paragraph tag. I’ve got the H1 tag. Let’s go ahead and apply this first to something like the paragraph, right? This whole entire snippet you can grab with your code pack. You don’t have to worry about it, but you can refer to this nomenclature here as well. Paragraph tag is what we’re applying it to, and we’re going to add the font family of Rancho. And we’re going to make sure the importance is there so it overrides the standard SocialGO font. We click Update File.

Now, let’s go take a look at our site. And there we go. Look at that. The paragraph has changed to the new font from Google. Now, it’s not the right size and not the right color, so let’s jazz it up a little bit. We go back to our editor. What we can do is go ahead and actually add a little more in the way of styling attributes. So first thing I’m going to say is color, and if I want I can use something simple like text-based descriptive. So red. And I go ahead and click Save. If I do that and I refresh that page, this will now change from the standard default color to red. Now, what if I want to make it a little bigger? So let’s go ahead and put font size. We’ll make it 25 pixels, and then again important, so it overrides SocialGO. And we add that semicolon at the end. Click Update File. Once it saves we go back over to our front, and we hit refresh. That’s what I’m talking about.

What if we wanted to add a second font? Well you know what? It’s no problem at all. It’s easy. We go over to Google, and we go back to browsing the main fonts. Let’s say we find something that looks a little different, but it’ll give us an idea what’s going on. Hey, there’s a bold one. How about this Poller One? Same idea. Click on Quick Use. Scroll down. Now we’re going to grab the @import. We’re going to copy that. We’re going to paste it right below the other language. Now we’ve got a second one. So now that we put that in, before we save it let’s apply it to something. What if we apply it to that H2 tag? Now I want to make sure that you understand. Over here in Google fonts, the same thing is true. By grabbing that CSS I’m applying it right here to the H2 tag in this section.

And all of this is ready to go. You don’t have to worry about it. It’s part of your snippets, but I just want you to understand the mechanics. And I always like to put the important in there just in case we’re going to have to override something. Let’s go down and click Save, and I think you’re going to see the magic. Once that says saved we go back to our site and refresh. And that, my friends, is your lesson of the day. This tutorial is showing you how easy it is to modify the fonts on your site. You can apply this to the navigation or anywhere throughout the rest of the site as easy as I’ve just shown you.
