Lately, my skin has been dry and the texture has been ashy. I'm sure the lack of natural Vitamin D from the absence of sun is a lead contender in the battle to figure out the cause– besides aging. I've been furiously applying my night creams, and nothing seems to help. Cheap or expensive. Thick or thin. They just don't feel like they are absorbing– or they absorb too fast.

I discovered an oil in a sample size that I liked by Dr. Hauschka, but when I tried to purchase it, the lady insisted it was for oily skin, not dry. So deflated, I walked away.

So, my curiosity over Linda Rodin's Luxury face oil finally had me. Here was an oil, and made by a gorgeous woman– a woman redefining what it means to age. So if she really uses it, then what's a better model? I might as well try it out. Unfortunately, it's not easy to come by in germany. And Luckily, again, I was on my way to visit relatives in the states, so I had it shipped there.

When I first applied it, I wasn't sure I could handle the smell. It's made from flowers and botanicals, and apparently one of the flowers is Lily. Yes yes, they are gorgeous. But I have such a sensitive nose, they have always bothered me. But, in the name of beauty I sucked it up. You are only to apply 2-3 drops. So I did. And after 20 minutes, the smell went away. Now I only smell it in the first few minutes. And apparently everyone else likes the smell of Lily's, because I keep getting asked what new fragrance I'm wearing... in a positive way. Good.

And my skin. So soft lately! So fresh. It's starting to come around! Now if only Spring will!

I suppose any girl has some amazing woman they look to for inspiration. When your a child it's probably the teenager that babysits you, or the older sister of your friend. Then when your a teenager it's the girls in their early 20's. And so it goes. What you look for, depends on who you are. Strong minded women. Glamours and Chic. Independent and wordily. And then, now, for me.. the aging gracefully, comfortable who she is, yet still glamours and chic.

I seem to be looking at women who are my age or older (just like the pattern), who have their own unique style, and have only done minimal maintenance to keep their youth. I'm all about dying your hair, some make-up and a little botox to keep myself from looking mad, or sad. But too much and you look more your age than without. It's true. The more you see a woman with her face pulled tight, you can see that she's covering something. It just becomes a mask.

We shouldn't be looking back--- using younger women as influences. They are for their younger peers to be on a pedestal. And older woman should look to her peers and elders for inspiration.

Never go back... only forward.

Today's Inspiration: Linda Rodin

Linda Rodin, (60 something) is a model of elegance! She started modeling when she moved to Italy to study at the age of eighteen. Returning to New York in the Seventies, she ran a successful, SoHo boutique, had stints as a stylist at chic stores like Henri Bendel, and then as a fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar. Eventually, she became a freelance stylist—acknowledged as one of the best in the business.

In 2007 she created her own skincare line: RODIN. Creating something that she was unable to find for a woman of her age. Something that would "caress the skin noticeably and without any delay." RODIN Olio lusso—and lipstick—are the only products Rodin uses on her skin and hair.

I haven’t worn makeup since I turned 30, except for lipstick which I never leave the house without. It always brightens your face. I hate glossy lips and only wear matte colors like Guerlain’s Rouge 129. My favorite pencil is Shu Uemura’s 365 lip liner, which was discontinued. Now I use a bright pink one from Makeup For Ever called Aqua Lip 16C.

For my daily regime, I wet my face with warm water in the morning, pat it dry and put my oil on while the skin is still damp. At night, I wash my face with a cleanser like Cetaphil and repeat. I don’t re-cleanse after sleeping.

Each of the ingredients in my face oil has a certain property. Rose hip seed treats sunspots, primrose treats rashes and calendula oil from the marigold flower is good for healing inflammation and irritation.

The most overrated thing is expensive towels for drying your face. Thick towels are too heavy and leave your skin bone dry. A moist face absorbs product better. I buy cheap Indian cotton towels from Dress Shoppe on Second Avenue. They’re 10 bucks and never get fluffy, but they’re good because they’re not absorbent

In the summer I use any sunblock over 20 SPF from Dermalogica. I used to be a Bain de Soleil girl way back, but I ruined my skin. Now I’m neurotic in the hot sun. I cover up in a burqa.

My new healthy habit is drinking green juice made with kale, spinach, ginger, lemon and celery. It’s like having a salad. All the models drink it, which makes their breath stink, but it’s delicious.

I prefer dark nails like Chanel Vamp and Essie Wicked or nothing at all. Jacqueline Padilha is a genius Brazilian manicurist who comes to my house.

My secret weapon is Fran Wilson’s Moodmatcher lipstick. I’ve been using it since I was 16. It’s green and you can put it under everything. It keeps your lips colored even after sleeping.

A common myth is that oil makes your hair greasy. Bob Recine, who created our formula has a motto: just a teeny drop every morning. It has juniper and rosemary and smells divine.

I’ve always maintained a thin figure. I don’t drink water except at night. My liquid is a cappuccino every morning and two glasses of wine at night. (I can totally relate to this)

To relax, I see David McCabe, a private massage therapist. He’s fantastic. You feel like you’re back in the womb.

My biggest beauty indulgence is a monthly Triad Medical facial from Dr. Colbert. It’s so luxurious but it only takes 20 minutes. First they clean your skin with a little suction that I call a mini vacuum cleaner, then they do a treatment that feels like your skin is getting popped and they finish with a minor peel. You walk out literally looking 10 years younger.

I’ve never colored my hair. I’ve been using Clairol Shimmer Highlights shampoo for blondes and white hair for years. I see Leonard Golino for a blowout every week. (she makes me want to go natural... but I'll wait till I'm 55)

The secret to aging gracefully is maintenance. Botox is fine in moderation, but the more you do the older you look. You can’t chase youth. You’ll just look old with a facelift. (didn't I just say this! LOL. Words of Wisdom)

Hamming it up in my DarylK Spring 2012 Dress

I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to spring this year. It's been a long long winter, and I'm really missing the sunshine, and along with it, light breezy dressing. Last summer I purchased this great dress from Daryl K. I wore it a few times at the end of the season, but just knew it would still look fabulous this spring. Let's hope I still fit into it after all the pommes and wurst I've been eating to chase away these chilly days.

Details

In collaboration with artist Spencer Sweeney, this abstract printed silk JumpDress is a cross between a dress and a jumpsuit. It looks like a dress but feels like a jumpsuit. It is a subtly asymmetrical shape that has a step-in opening creating a pant leg; it then wraps around the body to close with a zipper in the front. It is comfortable, functional, simultaneously elegant and simple.

The Circle of Beads

One of my favorite things to do is crafts. As a "studied" artist I used to think my crafty side was my silly hobby side– something not worth sharing. But I've come to realize crafts give you a lot more room to explore the fun and silly side of yourself. And it's also much more immediately gratifying for me. It comes in handy if you want to give a gift from the heart. Something you made, rather than bought. Imagine all the time that goes into making the gift. It's love. {lol}

I love to do art, but I pressure myself too much when I paint. When I sew or make jewery, it's different. I'm having fun, and there are no rules in my head. These days, I'm doing a lot of crafts. I have a plan in the back of my head. There is a big picture I'm working on. But as I go along, I'm learning, and exploring everything.

One of the projects I'm working on right now I call the "circle of beads". You see them everywhere, from expensive to cheap. All the stores have the same idea. The trick is in the details. I find my beads and "charms" all over the place. Picked some up in Brooklyn, Vienna, Barcelona, Hamburg and from the generosity of friends. Now they are coming together to create, unique one of kind pieces. I'm gifting, but if I make enough after the holidays are done, I'm might sell a few here.

I'll be showing the final pieces when complete.

DarylK Abstract Printed Silk Top!

I love this top. One of the collaboration prints Daryl's worked on with the New York artist Spencer Sweeney. I was drawn to the feeling of energy, the mix of New York Graffiti meets Japanese Kimono print attitude.

On my list are a pair of pants, this shirt and the dress. Each one is unique, the print's cut differently giving you your own unique top.

And now for the blooper. I washed it, in cold in the machine with same pants of the same material, but black. I think the pants bled, even with the cold wash on the shirt. Because the whites are grayish. But, it doesn't look bad. I still wear it every 3 days. Ah well, next time alone, or by hand.

I know. Stupid. But life is sometimes.

Score One: Sexy DarylK Glossy Red Fanny Pack!

Well, if you remember my personal look at DarylK's spring line back in October of 2011, you'll remember there were a few things I was coveting, and patience brings rewards!

So first on the list is this amazing red Fanny Pack. Yep, it's a fanny pack. But I've so far only worn it as a shoulder bag. It's so amazing and practical. It has a special spot for my glasses, phone, keys, lipstick and wallet. All I need for a stylish bike ride. And I plan on being as stylish as I can till the day I die. Btw, it even has enough room to stash one of those roll up shopping bags, which, inevitably I need for getting that pint of Milk, or bottle of wine.

As you can see from the photo above and below, it works well with my wardrobe. I seem to have a lot of red accents. Red flowers on the Gazelle, and Red J-Brand Jeans.

A lot of readers want to know where I get my stuff, and how much it costs. I don't always give prices because I don't like to share how much I'm willing to spend. It's embarrassing. I love a bargain, and die for vintage, but if I think an item I covet from a favorite designer is going to last then I think it's worth it to spend more. I'm not the $2,000 Fendi bag buyer (I don't even like them). But I will go up to $300 for a quality bag, if it's amazing. I prefer to spend less than $150 and yes, I know you can get a good bag for under $100, but I have bag issues, so let's just not go there.
So this bag? I'm not sure how much it retails for. It's not listed. I got it for a bit less, for confidential reasons that I'm not at liberty to divulge.

What becomes a woman of style when she reaches her 80's? Well, have a look at this trailer from Advanced Style's Ari Seth Cohen's upcoming Film. Lina Pliolplyte and Arei Seth Cohen have been filming and interviewing gorgeous and stylish ladies for over three years now. I'm dying to see the finished project, projected to be in theaters after their 2013 film festival circuit.

I'm super grateful for Mr. Cohen's appreciation of these ladies and all ladies of an Advanced age who continue to care about their appearance. It's nice to get recognition like this. I only hope I am half as stylish as these lovely ladies when I reach my "golden" years.

Tuesdays Ritual: Flower Picking

Yeah, I've turned into a flower freak. What can I say. I don't have a garden here in Hamburg, but I do have the famous IseMarkt of Eppendorf. I love it, and I'm hooked. I try to commit myself to go every Tuesday, but if I miss it, I can catch it again on Friday. It's not just flowers, its food of all kinds. But I'm not a food junkie like I am with flowers.

These are cat tails, lily's and alliums. Normally I don't do Lily's. They are gorgeous, but their smell is very strong. But they were so beautiful especially paired with the others I decided to go for it. And I'm glad I did.

The Long Hot/Cold Summer

I need some Structure in my life. Some routine! I've always needed to be organized, and have my ducks in a row in order to be creative! It sounds crazy but it's true. Most artists and writers need to have a routine in their day, and constance in order to find those fluid moments of inspiration. With the long summer break (kids out of school, bored, restless, fighting amongst themselves) I have not been able to spend anytime on my creative pursuits, except one bracelet I made (see above). I have to carve out a minute here and a moment there. Not enough time to get my creative juices flowing.

This has been an unusual summer for me. Traveling home to New York to visit with friends and spend some time at the beach, and then back left with a good 2 1/2 weeks left with no travel plans. No summer camp. I think I'm going to re-think that next year.

So here's hoping with the upcoming start of school, I get back on track. I hope all you moms out there have survived as well. I know at least one who can't wait!

Summer seems so long ago. I think it's spring or fall here. If it doesn't stop raining in Hamburg I might not get to wear my new summer shoes! I have worn them maybe twice, and they are about to up and walk out on me if I don't get them out on the streets more. A Brooklyn British Love Affair

I've never seen someone embrace their new life and home like I've seen my friend Victoria Sullivan embrace Brooklyn. We girls always joke how Victoria is the "mayer" of Brooklyn. Well really anywhere she visits, we dub her the "mayer" of... like Cold Springs. She just has a lovely way of introducing herself, and getting to know people. She goes out on her bike, explores and discovers the best and most unique finds. Always sure to find a bargain, and sometimes right off the street.

Take for example the way her and her husband bought a barely standing brownstone in a popular section of Brooklyn, and turned it around, on a tight budget, into one of the best of spaces ever. She really sets the bar. Dilapited to Desireable, Grime to Glory, Sad to Sensational. And I would not have believed it. I just don't have the eye that she and her handsome husband have. They could see right from the beginning what they wanted to do.

After a semi-reasonable about of time with contractors– pulling down, and putting up, and putting in– they took over the rest of the job themselves. But I don't just mean painting. They brought the old fireplace to a luster it probably never had, adorned the ceilings and walls with detailed molding, painted colors that suggest a feeling, lay down brand new wood floor boards, and even new stairs to the basement. They did this themselves. Then there's the decorating... Don't worry, it didn't happen over night. That would make them just too much to bear. Envy is only a small step away from good intentions. No, I'd say it took about 2 years to get just right. And that's how it ought to be. Love, care, and an ever persistent scrutiny to what goes wear and what one wants. You have to earn it. and they did.

The house has personality. It's theirs and it speaks volumes. I'm pleased as punch that Victoria has recieved the recognition she deserves with articles in British LivingEtc, which I posted last year here. And most recently on Refinery29.

And if that's not enough, Victoria and her sister Charlotte Thompson, who is based in England, are the fabulous duo behind White Rabbit England, which they've worked hard on and put heart and soul into. With gorgeous night lights of Rabbits, Owls and Charlie the dog, this spring they will be introducing nursery quilts and children's bedding too. Too bad my boys are all grown up! Although I think they'd love Charlie the Dog for their room... (hmmm birthday approaching fast!)

So as Mother Day approaches, I couldn't help but think of one of my hardest working moms, who finds time to still be the bestests friend ever. Without Victoria, I'd be lost at sea.

So the Daryl K Fall Winter 2012 Preview is out! And yes, once again, I wish I could forgo all other expenses; food, wine, bills (wait, keep the wine), and spend all my money on Daryl K!!!

Here are some (just some) of my favorites...

I love this look. And the pants, Stretch Will with Leather!? Mine! The shirt is silky and drapes just perfect. The block of colors; black, bone, plumb and grey... makes me feel inspired for fall, even before summer has hit!

Love the idea of paring a dress with leather leggings. And we all know Daryl K's leather leggings are the best ever made. If there is one investment we should all make, it's these.

Stretch Leather pants in Wine? Yes! Looks hot with the black silk jacquared top. I would slink around in this everyday... I would be that crazy girl who never changes her outfit.. Yes, that would be me.

It's time for the Spring Scarf!

Everyone must go out and buy a colorful spring scarf. Germans just LOVE their scarfs. I don't blame them. Besides practical reasons, it's just a fabulous way to freshen up any outfit. See the below photos as an example... I'm in my PJ's. Pajamas for those who are not in the know. They're my PJ's/working from home outfit. But see the scarf? It really makes me look like I'm ready to go out and about.

I found this scarf in my new hood; the fabulous Eppendorf. Yeah, it's kind of posh here, but I see a lot of flavor as well. And in fact this store I found, iKona, right on Hegestrasse, reminds me of Montauk. I can just picture the clothing on me all summer. However, one thing that is depressing, is how expensive it is here. Not just this neighborhood, but in general. Clothing seems more expensive and not just the fact that the Euro is stronger than the dollar. But stuff is pricier. So I have to just look, ogle and dream.

Except for this scarf! I treated myself. I haven't bought anything for me in 2 months! Well, except the grey and pink study sneakers. But those were more necessity than vanity. But there is always vanity involved. Always.

This le.sens scarf is hand made by Leoni Sens. The scarves come smaller, or large, and cotton, or my favorite, a mix of cotton and silk. But those were even MORE expensive. But so lovely!
