Un nuovo negozio a Firenze - 'A new shop in Florence'

La scorsa settimana, in occasione della settimana di Pitti Uomo, Prada ha aperto un nuovo spazio espositivo.

Il negozio è nel pieno centro di Firenze, in Piazza del Duomo per l'esattezza. Ha preso il posto di un altra attività commerciale, che a sua volta era subentrata ad un meraviglioso bar pasticceria, Bruzzichelli.

Last week, on the occasion of Pitti Uomo, Prada opened a new expository space.

The shop is right in the center of Florence, in Piazza del Duomo to be precise. It took the place of another commercial activity, that in turn came after a fantastic coffee shop, Bruzzichelli.

Lo ricordo non perché fossi solita andarci, credo che abbia chiuso quando ero appena adolescente, ma perché da bambina venni portata lì a far merenda dalla mamma di una delle mie amiche.

I remember it not because I used to hang out there, I think it closed when I barely was an adolescent, but because as a child I was taken there for an afternoon snack by one of my friends' mother.

Fatto inaudito a casa mia: entrare a far merenda in un bar, luogo di perdizione e di peccato. Non credo nemmeno di averlo raccontato a mia madre, mentre ricordo vividamente il banco pieno di delizie mai viste e l'imbarazzo della scelta, per poi decidere per il primo tramezzino della mia vita. Come dimenticare la squisitezza di quel pane bianco, morbido, raffinato; la maionese che scendeva fluida per la mia gola...ed il senso di colpa per essermi lasciata andare al proibito. Ed a goderne, pure.

An unheard of event at home: to go for snack into a coffee shop, a place of sin and perdition. I don not think that I ever told my mother, while I vividly remember the never seen before delicacies and how hard it was to make a choice, and then finally deciding on the first 'tramezzino' of my life. How to forget the exquisite white bread, soft, refined; the mayonnaise fluidly going down my throat...and feeling guilty because I surrendered to the forbidden. And to enjoyed it, even.

Così, vedere le nuove vetrine di Prada, mi ha riportato alla memoria l'esperienza di tanti anni fa. Ho sorriso vedendo nuove delizie, anche se di altro genere: colorate, raffinate, tentatrici e peccaminose.
Come non restare incantati davanti al cocktail di colori qui a sinistra, in questo gennaio freddo e buio rallegrano gli occhi ed il cuore.

Therefore seeing the new Prada's windows brought to my mind this experience from the past. I smiled seeing new delicacies, although of another kind: Colored, refined, tempting and sinful.
How to be indifferent looking at the colorful cocktail here on the left, that lighten up the eyes and the heart in this cold and dark month of January.

Una persona vicina a me lavora negli uffici di Milano, quindi da tempo tengo d'occhio questa Maison che non solo propone capi elegantissimi di indubbia qualità ma anche cose assolutamente importabili... credo più per provocazione che per mancanza di buon gusto.
La controllata Miu Miu in genere è ancora più originale nel suo design, nelle vetrine ho fotografato queste scarpe (forse una delle poche cose di questa azienda che potrei indossare anche io).

Someone close to me works in the Milan offices, so I have been following this Maison for a while; what they propose are very elegant garments of undeniable quality but sometimes absolutely unwearable stuff... I think more as a provocation than for lack of good taste.
The controlled Miu Miu quite often is even more original in the design, in the windows I took a picture of these shoes (perhaps one of the few things of this company that I could wear)

Forse c'è anche un po' di ironia, un desiderio di divertirsi e scherzare con la moda, come in questa camicia jeans il cui collo è cosparso di perle di vetro.
Un'idea che potremmo tutte copiare e rinfrescare con poco il nostro guardaroba.

Maybe there is some irony, a wish to amuse and be amused by fashion, as in this denim shirt whose collar is decorated by glass beads.
An idea that we could all copy and refresh our clothing.

Ma se proprio dovessi scegliere, io prenderei queste ballerine!

But if I really had to make a choice, I would take these flats!

Buon Anno - 'Happy New Year'

Buon Anno a tutti, mi scuso per il lunghissimo silenzio dovuto ad una serie di impegni che mi hanno tenuta impegnata e reso difficile continuare a scrivere. In più ho avuto un periodo di 'crisi da blog' come ho letto che spesso succede; addirittura ho anche seguito molto poco i miei blogamici.

Insomma ultimamente sono stata una pessima blogger e questo post di inizio anno vuole non solo portare auguri a chi mi segue, ma anche essere un nuovo inizio di attività.

Happy New Year to all of you, please excuse my very long silence due to a number of engagements that kept me busy and made it difficult for me to continue writing. Moreover I had a temporary 'blog crisis' as I read that it often happens; and I even followed very little my blogfriends.

All in all I lately have been a very bad blogger and this post at the beginning of the year wants not only to bring my wishes to those who are following me but also to be a new beginning of activity.

Ieri sera ho avuto un invito in un posto meraviglioso, una terrazza da cui si dominava tutta la città, in compagnia di amici cari e simpatici, per una cena squisita. A mezzanotte mille fuochi d'artificio sono esplosi tutt'intorno: sulle rive dell'Arno, sulle colline vicine e lontane, in una parola uno spettacolo sfolgorante. Quale migliore modo di cominciare un nuovo anno?
Ho persino ballato, cosa che non avevo avuto occasione di fare da tempo: quando ballo, il mio corpo non mi appartiene più e la mia anima balla anch'essa.

Yesterday night I had an invitation to a marvelous place, a terrace dominating the city, together with fun and dear friends, for an exquisite dinner. At midnight 1 thousand fireworks exploded : on the river's banks, on the hills all around, in one word a blazing sight. What better way to start a new year?
I even danced, something that I hadn't the occasion of doing lately: when I dance my body doesn't belong to me anymore, and my soul dances as well.

Stamattina sono uscita per una passeggiata tonificante. Il Piazzale Michelangelo brulicava di fiorentini e turisti, sotto lo sguardo distaccato del David. Il sole splendeva e questa mia città dava il meglio di sé.

This morning I went for an invigorating walk. The Piazzale Michelangelo was full of florentines and tourists, under David's detached gaze. The sun was shining and this city of mine was giving her best.

Londra - 'London'

Ho accompagnato Seconda Figlia a Londra per l'inizio dell'anno accademico. Non che avesse proprio bisogno di me, ma è stata un'eccellente scusa anche per passare qualche giorno insieme.

Londra, inutile dirlo, è sempre una città stimolante che offre un varietà di eventi, novità, luoghi da scoprire o rivisitare.

Ci sono poi dei posti così intrinsecamente britannici che non potrebbero esistere in nessun altro posto che nel Regno Unito, come il piccolo ristorante dove abbiamo mangiato un giorno.

I took Second Daughter to London for the beginning of the academic year. Quite honestly she didn't really need me, but it was an excellent excuse also to spend a few days together.

London, it goes without saying, is a stimulating town, always offering a variety of events, novelties, places to discover or visit again.

There are also some spots so intrinsically British that they could be nowhere else but in the United Kingdom, like the little restaurant where we had lunch one day.

Londra per me sono anche i musei, così ricchi di pezzi interessanti, e le mostre ad altissimo livello. Sono tornata dopo tanti anni al British Museum dove erano esposte queste squisite borse (mi pare che si chiamino komebukuro).

For me London also means the museums, so rich in interesting pieces, and the exhibitions always at the top level. After many years I went back to the British Museum were I saw these exquisite Japanese bags (that I think are called komebukuro).

C'era poi un'interessante esposizione intitolata 'From craddle to death' (Dalla culla alla morte) che esplorava la quantità di medicinali ingeriti da una persona nel corso della propria vita calcolati mediamente in 14.000 pezzi. Le pillole sono state cucite tra due pezzi di garza e l'effetto era davvero impressionante. Altrettanto impressionante lo studio condotto secondo il quale ad una persona negli ultimi 10 anni di vita sarebbero prescritti la stessa quantità di medicinali assunti complessivamente nei prima 60 anni.

There was a very interesting exhibitions called 'From craddle to death' exploring the amount of medicines swallowed by a person during a lifetime and calculated as an average 14.000 pieces. The pills have been sewn between 2 sheets of gauze and the effect was really impressive. Equally impressive was the study according to which a person in the last 10 years of life would be prescribed the same amount of medicines taken in the first 60 years.

Ispirazione - ‘Inspiration’

Uno dei corsi più belli che io abbia mai fatto è quello di Design for Embroidery dello scorso giugno.

Come si dice: impara l’arte e mettila da parte. L’occasione per metter a frutto le mie nuove conoscenze si è presentata quando ho voluto fare un piccolo presente ad un’amica, grande intenditrice di arte contemporanea. Oltretutto aveva fatto molti complimenti quando ha visitato la mia prima (e per ora unica) mostra a dicembre.

Come punto di partenza ho scelto un’opera che in qualche modo è legata a lei, il Grande Ferro di Alberto Burri. Alta 5 metri, questa è una struttura complessa di considerevoli dimensioni ma incredibile leggerezza.

One of the best courses that i ever attended was Design for Embroidery last June.

We have a saying that could be translated like this: "Learn the skill and put it aside until you need it". The occasion to use my new skills arose when I wanted to give a little gift to a friend, a great expert of contemporary art. Furthermore she had been very enthusiastic about my art when she visited my first (and last till now) exhibition in December.

As a starting point I chose a work that in a certain way is meaningful to her, the Grande Ferro (Big Iron) of Alberto Burri. This complex structure is 5 meters high, so it has considerable dimensions but unbelievable lightness.

Ho disegnato su un grande foglio di carta le linee principali, cercando di dare l’idea complessiva dell’opera, di catturarne l’essenza. Dopodiché ho scelto una porzione che mi sembrava più interessante, l’ho riprodotta su lino e poi ho ricamato.
Una volta monatato su cartoncino, ho potuto scrivere sul retro qualche parola e farne dono alla mia amica.

On a big sheet of paper I draw the principal lines, trying to give the general impression of the work, to capture its essence. Then I chose the portion that seemed most interesting to me, transferred on linen and then I embroidered.
Once framed in cardboard, I could write a few words on the back and give it to my friend.

Tecniche tessili per metallo - ‘Textile techniques for metal’

Durante la settimana sono stata a Pavia dalla mia maestra (e oramai amica) Angharad per un altro corso che interessava moltissimo a Seconda Figlia.
Il metallo non è proprio un materiale che mi è congeniale, ma nei corsi si impara sempre qualcosa che con un po’ di immaginazione può essere usato in altro modo. Ma soprattutto ho avuto la gioia di passare qualche giorno con mia figlia; solo vedere i suoi occhi che brillavano, l’entusiasmo e la passione che ha messo nel lavoro valevano il viaggio.

During the week I went to Pavia to my teacher (and by now friend) Angharad for another course in which Second Daughter was very interested.
Metal is not really a material that is congenial to me, but during a course I always learn something that with a little imagination can be used somewhere else. Most of all I had the joy of spending a few days with Second Daughter: just looking at her shining eyes, at the enthusiasm and passion that she put in her work made the trip worthwhile.

Abbiamo cominciato con la cosiddetta maglia vichinga, una maglia tubolare usata anticamente da molti popoli. Avevo sentito parlare del Naalbinding senza avere però mai approfondito l’argomento.
Di questa tecnica ho subito visto l’applicazione, magari in rafia per dei manici di borsa.

We started with Viking knitting, a tubular knitting used in the past by many peoples. I heard about Naalbinding without really examining the topic in depth.
Of this technique I immediately saw an application, maybe using raffia making handles for a bag.

Siamo poi passate all’uncinetto, usato però in maniera diversa perché il metallo decisamente NON SCORRE.
Il metallo è duro e resistente, mi sono fatta degli incredibili muscoli alle dita mio malgrado.

Then we used crochet, but in a different way because metal definitely DOESN’T MOVE SMOOTHLY.
Metal is hard and tough, I had the occasion of unwillingly increase the muscles in my fingers.

Tecniche diverse e loro varianti sono state oggetto di studio nei 3 giorni come potete vedere dal dettagliato programma. Ma il clou del corso è stata la giornata dedicata al merletto a fuselli.
Ho avuto difficoltà perché non vedevo bene i piccolissimi punti; inoltre come dicevo prima lavorare il metallo è difficilissimo per cui ho fatto una prova con filo di seta. Seconda Figlia invece si è scoperta una vocazione di merlettaia e una volta capito il meccanismo ha eseguito il suo pezzo con determinazione e delizia.

During the 3 days we explored several techniques and their variations as you can see from the detailed program. The highlight of the course was the day in which we tackled bobbin lace.
It was very difficult for me because I couldn’t really see the little points; as I earlier said metal is very difficult to work with, so I used silk thread instead. On the other hand Second Daughter discovered her true vocation as a lacemaker and once she understood the nuts and bolts she worked on her piece with determination and delight.

Pronta a partire - ‘Ready to go’

Tra poche ore volo in Portogallo per due settimane di vacanza con TUTTI i miei figli. E’ un evento eccezionale, quasi unico, spero ripetibile in futuro anche se le loro vite stanno cambiando ed alcuni hanno cominciato a ‘fare il nido’.
Sento gioia ed eccitamento, ma anche una vaga ansia: andrà tutto bene, litigheranno, come sarà la convivenza dopo tanto tempo, si sentiranno parte della famiglia compagni e fidanzati?

In a few hours I will be leaving for Portugal for a 2 weeks holiday with ALL my children. This is an exceptional event, almost unique, that might hopefully be repeated in the future although their lives are changing and some of them have started ‘preparing the nest’.
I feel joy and excitement, but also a vague anxiety: will everything be all right, will they quarrel, how will cohabitation be after such a long time, will partners and fiancés feel part of the family?

Mi sono portata libri, il mio ricamo e gli acquerelli che ho trascurato negli ultimi tempi.
Ho preparato un diario su cui poter scrivere e dipingere, dal momento che mi ero trovata bene con quello a suo tempo preparato per il viaggio in India. Ho usato una tecnica giapponese imparata durante l’inverno durante un piccolo corso domenicale, ed un foglio della carta marmorizzata di cui ho parlato qualche giorno fa.

I took with me books, my embroidery and watercolors that I haven’t used much lately.
First of all a journal on which I will write and paint, since I liked what I had during my last trip to India. I used a Japanese technique that I learned in a short workshop in a Winter Sunday, and a sheet of the marbled paper of which I spoke a few days ago.

Poi naturalmente ho cucito una pratica borsa piena di tasche in cui mettere tutto questo, con scampoli Ikea che avevo lì da qualche tempo. Insomma, ho speso bene il mio tempo, tappata in casa ed aspettando non solo la partenza ma anche che passasse l’ondata di calore che ha portato la temperatura a 40°C.

Then of course I stitched a functional bag full of pockets with which to carry all the above, made with Ikea fabric that I bought some time ago. All in all I feel that I have usefully spent my time, holed up at home and waiting not only the moment of departure but also that the heat wave that brought temperatures in the 40°C (104°F) would relent.

Roberto Capucci

Una volta completata la salita sulla collina attraverso il Giardino Bardini, ho visitato il museo della Fondazione Capucci. Per chi non lo sapesse, Roberto Capucci è uno stilista di moda dalla sorprendente creatività.

Once I finally arrived at the top of the hill after my walk through the Giardino Bardini, I visited the museum of the Fondazione Capucci. For those who do not know, Roberto Capucci is a fashion designer of surprising creativity.

I suoi abiti sono delle vere e proprie sculture in tessuto, originali e pieni di colore. Le forme sono spesso insolite, per esempio grandi maniche oppure enormi gonne, strascichi e volant importanti, tanto che alcuni di essi sono veramente difficili da portare (impossibile sedersi o avere una conversazione intima con qualcuno).

His dresses are more fabric sculptures, original and full of colour. Very often the shapes are unusual, for instance big sleeves, or huge skirts, trains and gigantic ruffles, so much that some of them are really difficult to wear (impossible to sit down or have an intimate conversation with someone).



E’ uno stilista a cui si sono rivolte dame dell’alta società, attrici e registi di film. Vado periodicamente a visitare l’esposizione che viene cambiata una volta l’anno ed ogni volta lo spettacolo è appagante, sia per le forme che per i colori.

He is someone who designed for socialites, actresses, film directors. I go every now and then to visit the exhibition that is changed once a year and every time the sight is satisfying both for the shapes and the colours.



Un altro aspetto che ammiro è l’accurato lavoro sartoriale: metri e metri di seta orlata a mano, oppure plissettature chilometriche; per non parlare di strisce in gradazioni di colore progressive, cucite con infinita pazienza in modo da dare, da lontano, l’idea di un tessuto in colore sfumato.

Another aspect that has all my admiration is the accurate sartorial work: meters and meters of hand hemmed silk, or kilometers of plissé fabric, not to mention stripes of grading colour, sewn together with infinite patience in order that from afar they seem to blend one with the other.

Rose su seta - ‘Roses on silk’

Non si può dire che io sia un’esperta di tinture di tessuti, più leggo e più mi accorgo di non sapere; se volessi approfondire le mie conoscenze dovrei studiare parecchio, chimica compresa.
Tuttavia ogni tanto mi diletto a buttare nel pentolone tessuti, allume e piante, con risultati a volte entusiasmanti (a volte meno).

Recentemente ho usato dei petali di rose rosse che mi erano state regalate da una persona un tempo molto amata. Non so cosa esattamente volessi trasferire sul tessuto, se il grande amore passato oppure il dolore per la sofferenza patita in seguito. Sapevo che non avrei mai riprodotto l’intensa colorazione dei petali, ma a me importano soprattutto le tracce lasciate su cui poi ricamare.

I can not say that I am an expert in fabric dyeing, the more I read and the more I see that I do not know enough; if I wanted to enlarge my knowledge I would have to study a lot, chemistry included .
However from time to time I take pleasure in throwing fabrics, alum and plants, sometimes with exciting results (sometimes not).

Recently I used red roses petals; the flowers were given to me by someone that I deeply loved in a period of my life. I do not know what I exactly wanted to transfer on the fabric, the past great love or the later suffered pain. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to reproduce the intense colouring of the petals, but after all I am more interested in the marks left by the flowers on which I can embroider.

La seta ottenuta sarà utilizzata per un altro progetto (è probabile che faccia un’a seconda mostra a fine anno), e naturalmente ogni prezioso ritaglio viene conservato accuratamente in attesa di ulteriori usi. L’occasione si è presentata per il compleanno di un’amica che aveva ammirato le mie opere e per la quale ho pensato di realizzare un piccolo pannello (11 x 13 cm circa) che ho poi montato su cartoncino, come un biglietto di auguri (qui sopra).

The silk that I obtained will be used for another project (it is possible that I will have a second show by the end of the year) and of course every precious cutting is carefully kept waiting to be utilised. The occasion arose for a dear friend’s birthday that had admired my works and for whom I thought of making a little panel (about 11 x 13 cm) that I then framed as a birthday card (above).

Ricamare su organza di seta è tutta un’altra sensazione che ricamare su cotone o lino, per quanto il filo utilizzato sia lo stesso (mouliné di cotone). La mia amica mi ha chiesto perché io non utilizzi un telaio quando ricamo; era la prima volta che ci pensavo e mi sono resa conto che per me il movimento dell’ago è molto più fluido senza la costrizione del telaio, ed è quella sensazione di cui ho bisogno per sentirmi tutt’uno col lavoro che sto eseguendo.
Dunque ricamare su seta è un altro livello di soddisfazione, ed il prossimo passo sarà ricamare su seta con la seta…non vedo l’ora!

Embroidering on silk organdie is a different sensation than embroidering on cotton or linen, in spite of the fact that the thread is the same (cotton mouliné). My friend asked why I am not using a frame when I embroider: it was the first time that I really thought about it and realized that for me the needle motion is much more fluid without the constraint of a frame and this is the sensation that I need in order to feel one with my work.
In summary embroidering on silk is another level of feeling, and next step will be embroidering on silk with silk…I can not wait!

Giardino Bardini

Niente di meglio una domenica mattina di una bella passeggiata, anche in considerazione del fatto che volevo riprendere in mano i pennelli dopo moltissimo tempo e soprattutto dal momento che non fa ancora troppo caldo.

Nothing better on a Sunday morning than a stroll, also considering that I wanted to use my brushes again and especially that it is not too hot yet.

Non lontano da dove abito si trova il Giardino Bardini di proprietà dello Stato, un gioiello da non perdere se venite a Firenze. Si trova sulla riva dell’Arno e sale bruscamente sulla collina da cui si ammira una vista spettacolare della città. E’ un luogo di delizie per gli amanti dei giardini: curatissimo, con una scelta varia ed interessante di piante per cui ci sono fioriture praticamente in ogni stagione.

The State owned Giardino Bardini lies not far from where I live, a true jewel not to miss if you come to Florence. It is on the riverside and suddenly climbs on the hill from which it is possible to admire a spectacular view of the city. It is a delightful place for the garden lovers: very well tended, it has a variety of interesting plants flowering in almost every season.

In luglio è il turno delle dalie, degli agapanti e soprattutto delle ortensie di cui si può ammirare tutta una collezione nel tunnel detto, appunto delle ortensie. Pochi i visitatori, per quanto il biglietto dia diritto anche all’accesso al Giardino di Boboli.

In July you will find dahlias, agapanthuses and especially hydrangeas of which it is possible to admire a real collection in what is properly called ‘the Hydrangeas tunnel’. There were very few visitors although the entrance ticket allows the entrance also to the Boboli Gardens.

Con l’occasione ho visitato il Museo Capucci ospitato nella Villa Bardini, ma di questo vi parlerò prossimamente.
I took the opportunity to visit the Museo Capucci hosted in the Bardini Villa, but I will write another post on this.

Carta marmorizzata - ‘Marbled paper’

Seconda Figlia ed io abbiamo fatto un piccolo corso, solo due mezze giornate nella splendida cornice della Fondazione Primo Conti, un museo poco frequentato, e direi quasi dimenticato, sulla collina di Fiesole. Un posto tranquillo da cui si gode una vista magnifica sulla vallata piena di olivi, un’oasi di pace che spinge alla creatività.

Second Daughter and I attended a short course, only two half days in the magnificent frame of the Fondazione Primo Conti, a little frequented museum, I would rather say forgotten, on the Fiesole’s hill. A quiet place where you can enjoy a lovely view of the valley full of olive trees, an oasis of peace that suggests creativity.

Il primo giorno abbiamo fatto la carta marmorizzata, tecnica di decorazione antichissima (non sapevo che già esistesse ai tempi dei Romani) e molto diffusa nei secoli, dal Giappone all’India, alla Turchia.
Noi abbiamo usato colla da parati come supporto dei colori acrilici, ma si possono utilizzare una gran varietà di prodotti, compresi acqua e colori ad olio.

On the first day we produced marbled paper, a very old decorative technique (I didn’t know that it is as old as the Romans) and very widespread in the centuries, from Japan, to India and Turkey.
We used wall paper glue as a support for the acrylic colours, but it is possible to use a variety of means, including water and oil paints.

La parte più creativa è la scelta dei colori, la quantità che se ne usa e come si decide di mescolarli fra loro ottenendo un effetto più o meno marmorizzato. Nell’esempio qui sopra ho scelto di non disturbare i colori e di cogliere il disegno formato solo dall’allargarsi dei colori stessi sulla superficie viscosa.

The creative part of the process is the choice of colours, the quantity to be used and how to mix them in order to obtain a marbled effect. In the above example I chose not to disturb the colours and to catch the pattern given by their spreading on the viscous surface.

La seconda parte del corso è stata dedicata alla realizzazione di un piccolo quaderno, Non ho fatto foto in quanto la tecnica era davvero semplice e se ne trovano mille esempi sul web.
Una volta di più ho sentito una gran soddisfazione nel lavoro manuale e nella produzione di un oggetto che posso usare.

The second part of the course was about making a little notebook. I didn’t take picture since the technique was really simple and there are hundreds of examples online.

Biancomangiare - ‘Blancmange’

Mi è capitato ad una Fiera di incontrare una simpatica coppia di Modica da cui ho comprato, non solo la squisita e specialissima cioccolata granulosa, ma anche della Pasta di Mandorla.

La cioccolata di Modica ha una curiosa storia, in quanto pare che la ricetta per prepararla sia stata portata in Sicilia dai soldati spagnoli nel XIV secolo che a loro volta l’avrebbero imparata dagli Aztechi. Un’amica che si interessa di cucina mi ha detto aver trovato un prodotto simile in Guatemala.

It happened to me to meet in a Fair a nice couple coming from Modica from whom I bought not only the very special and delightful gritty chocolate, but also Almond Paste.

The chocolate from Modica has a curious story since apparently the recipe was brought to Sicily by Spanish soldiers in the 16th century who had learned about it from the Aztecs. A friend who is an expert in cooking told me that she found a similar product in Guatemala.

Sulla scatola della Pasta di Mandorla era riportata la ricetta del Bianco Mangiare, un dolce antichissimo la cui origine si perde nella notte dei tempi, ma comunque di origine araba. Molto preparato nel Medio Evo, all’epoca vi si univano carni bianche di pollo o pesce, che vennero poi non più utilizzate a partire dal 1700.

The recipe of Blancmange was written on the card box, a very old dessert whose origin is lost in time, but certainly of Arab origin. It was very popular in the Middle Age, at that time it also contained white meats of chicken or fish, not more used from the 1700.

Ho provato a farlo, è un dolce delizioso, un sapore di altri tempi un po’ come il Budino Diplomatico o la Charlotte. Incredibile come cambi il gusto e come certe preparazioni culinarie un tempo alla moda vengano dimenticate e relegate nel passato.
Nella mia ricerca di notizie ho appreso l’esistenza di un gruppo musicale attivo agli inizi degli anni ‘80 chiamato proprio Blancmange. Non si finisce mai di imparare!

I made this delicious cake, it has the flavour of times gone by, like the Diplomt Pudding or the Charlotte. It is unbelievable to see how the taste changes and how certain once fashionable gastronomic preparations are forgotten relegated into the past.
In my research I found that there was a band called Blancmange that was active at the beginnig of the 80ties. There is always an occasion to learn something new!

Semplice semplice – ‘Easy peasy’

Qualche tempo fa ho fatto uno dei miei esperimenti di tintura, un esperimento così poco interessante che non solo non ho preso appunti, ma non mi ricordo nemmeno che tipo di colore ho usato. So per certo che era un colorante chimico e non naturale, ma non ricordo altro. Mancanza di interesse per l’esperimento oppure sono gli anni che avanzano e la memoria è in situazione peggiore di quello che io voglia credere?

Ho preso uno dei vecchi strofinacci di cucina che compro sui banchetti, ho dato qualche modestissimo punto facendo un piccolo shibori ottenendo un pezzo tutto sommato poco eccitante.

Some time ago I made one of my dyeing experiments, an experiment with such little interest that not only I didn’t take notes, but I can not even recall which kind of dye I used. I know by sure that it was a chemical dye and not a natural one, but I can remember nothing else. Is this a real lack of interest for the experiment or is it a matter of age and my memory is in worst condition that I care to admit?

I took one of the old tea towels that I buy at markets, I stitched in a very modest shibori obtaining a piece that isn’t exciting at all.

Una sera in cui mi sentivo particolarmente turbata per varie vicende familiari, ho preso in mano questo cencio ed ho cominciato a dare punti con un semplice filo da ricamo beige: niente di complicato, nessun bisogno di pensare, solo le mani che si muovevano sulla tela. Una terapia vera e proprio: la mente che si distende e si apre, il cuore che sembra ricominciare a battere lento, forte, sicuro. Un lasciarsi andare, un ritrovare il ritmo del respiro.

One evening that I felt particularly torn by various familiar issues, I took this ‘rag’ and started to stitch with a simple, beige embroidery floss: nothing complicated, no need to think, only my hands that moved on the cloth. A real therapy in which the mind relaxes, the heart looks as if starting to beat again: slow, strong, safe. A kind of letting go, recovering the rhythm of breathing.

Non dovrei sorprendermi: ci sono forme di terapia che prevedono sia il lavorare sui tessuti, sia il raggiungere l’io più profondo semplicemente tenendoli fra le mani, guardandoli e perdendosi in essi. Vedere per esempio lo straordinario lavoro di Wendy Golden Levitt.

I shouldn’t be surprised: there are forms of therapy that involve either working on fabrics or reaching the inner self simply holding, looking and getting lost in them. Look for instance at the very extraordinary work of Wendy Golden Levitt.

Design for embroidery

Qualche settimana fa sono tornata a Pavia, dove già ho avuto modo di fare qualche corso presso la scuola della deliziosa e competente Angharad.

Questa volta si trattava di un corso che mi attirava in maniera particolare, perché ricamare mi piace moltissimo ma negli ultimi mesi ho sentito bloccata la mia vena creativa. Avevo bisogno di una spintarella per rimettermi in marcia, e quale migliore occasione di un corso con la grande Diana Springall?

A few weeks ago I was back in Pavia, where I already had the chance of taking a few courses at the textile school of my sweet and knowledgeable friend Angharad

This time the occasion was a course that attracted me in a particular way, since I do love embroider but in the last months I felt my creativity somewhat blocked. I needed a push to set me in motion again, and what better occasion than a course with the great Diana Springall?

Abbiamo cominciato con una serie di tratti molto semplici, mettendo colore sulla carta: prima il nero, poi il bianco. Ci siamo ispirate ad oggetti reali, ai fiori ed alle piante del giardino. Ad ogni fase i nostri gesti diventavono più fluidi, più sicuri.
La fase successiva è stata ricavare un disegno dai nostri scarabocchi e trasferirlo su carta lucida.

We started with very simple strokes putting color on paper: at first black, and then white. We got inspiration from real objects, form the flowers and plants in the garden. At every step our doodles became more fluid and confident.

La fase successiva è stata quella di trasferire il disegno sul tessuto con una tecnica antica e collaudata chiamata in inglese ‘pricking and pouncing’. Pare che questa tecnica fosse già in uso nel Medioevo e per quanto attualmente ci siano altri metodi, Diana diceva che secondo lei resta sempre il migliore.

Then we learned how to transfer the design on fabric following an ancient and well tested technique called ‘pricking and pouncing’. Apparently this technique has been in use since the Middle Age; now there are other methods but according to Diana it still is the best one.

Diana aveva portato moltissime foto, disegni ed esempi di ricami da lei eseguiti. Il pezzo più notevole a mio avviso è rappresentato da questo paio di pantofole il cui disegno è stato fatto tenendo a mente cose o simboli cari al destinatario finale.

Diana brought with her many pictures, designs and examples of embroideries that she made. In my opinion the most stunning one was this pair of slippers, whose design was made keeping in mind objects or symbols dear to the final recipient.

Mi sono già iscritta ad una altro corso a luglio, con Seconda Figlia. Le cose da fare con Textile Support sarebebro tante, per esempio le gite di settembre a Milano e Venezia per studiare merletto…di che sognare!

I have already signed up for another course next July that I will attend with Second Daughter. There is so much to do with Textile Support, for instance the short trips in September to Milan and Venice to study lace…an exercise in daydreaming!

Preparativi per l’estate - Getting ready for Summer

Nonostante la pioggia ed il freddo di questo insolito Maggio, una certa speranza che prima o poi arrivi il caldo alberga nel mio cuore. Non mi sono dunque lasciata abbattere dalla pioggia insistente e tirato fuori un bel taglio di cotone mi sono messa a cucire i pantaloni di questo cartamodello.

Con una certa titubanza ed inquietudine a dire il vero, poiché Neki ha avuto le sue difficoltà a realizzarli.

In effetti non è un modello semplice ed inoltre una volta completati i pantaloni ho dovuto disfarli e ridurre il dietro di quasi 20 cm perché le arricciature provocate dall’elastico in vita mi facevano sembrare un’autentica balena.
Dopo qualche modifica sono arrivata alla fine, ed ora non mi resta che aspettare il cambiamento di clima che tutti auspichiamo.

In spite of the rain and cold of this unusual month of May, I still harbour some hope that sooner or later the heat will arrive. Therefore I didn’t let the constant rain depress me; I found a nice piece of cotton and cut the trousers of this pattern.

To tell the truth I was somewhat hesitant and anxious since Neki had her problems in making her pair.

In fact it isn’t an easy pattern at all and once completed I had to take the trousers apart and reduce the back by about 20 cm (10 inches) because the gathering caused by the elastic waist made me look like a real whale.
After a few modifications I finally completed my job and now I only have to wait for the change of climate that we are all hoping for.

A fine aprile c’è stata una Notte Bianca a Firenze; mi è capitato di passare di fronte a Palazzo Pitti mentre facevano le prove. Riuscite a vedere il violinista sulla bicicletta che suona, sollevato da questa enorme gru? Non so proprio come facesse a mantenere la calma così in alto ed a continuare a suonare!

At the end of April there was in Florence a ‘All night festival’. I had the chance of passing in front of Palazzo Pitti while there was a rehearsal. Can you see the violinist on the bike that plays while being uplifted by this enormous crane? I do not know how he could keep calm and continue playing his music!

Venezia

Ho avuto la fortuna di passare un paio di giorni in questa meravigliosa città. Erano moltissimi anni che non ci andavo, forse una quindicina, e sono rimasta incantata come se fosse la prima volta.
Sarà che adesso ho un altro occhio per forme e colori, ma non mi ricordavo Venezia così bella e così piena di fascino nonostante la pioggia e la fiumana incessante di turisti.

I was so lucky to be able to spend a couple of days in this marvelous city. I hadn’t been there for many years, maybe 15, and I was enchanted as if it was the first time that I was there.
Perhaps because now I have another eye for shape and colour, but I didn’t remember Venice so beautiful and full of charm in spite of the rain and the ceaseless stream of tourists.

Avrei voluto sedermi con la mia matita ed i miei acquerelli, ogni punto era buono per fermarsi a disegnare. Ho fatto molte foto e per quanto mi piaccia riguardarle in un secondo momento, mi danno meno emozione di un piccolo schizzo. Disegnare e poi dipingere mi dà modo di soffermarmi sui dettagli, di assorbire in una certa maniera quello su cui ho puntato la mia attenzione. Riprendere in mano il mio taccuino mi fa rivivere il fremito del momento, la libertà del tratto, la gioia del colore.

I would have liked to sit with my pencil and my watercolors, every spot was good to stop and draw. I took many pictures and as much as I like to later look at them, they give me less thrill than a little sketch. Drawing and then painting gives me the opportunity to linger on details, in a certain way to absorb what I am looking at. Opening my sketchbook later makes me relive the emotion of the moment, the freedom of the stroke, the joy of the color.

Abbiamo avuto una pioggia pressoché incessante, addirittura abbiamo sperimentato il fenomeno dell’acqua alta, cosa rara nel mese di maggio. Il comune era impreparato o comunque assente, per cui non sono state poste le passerelle. Noi e gli altri turisti ad un certo punto abbiamo dovuto toglierci scarpe e calze per poter proseguire. L’acqua era gelida e ci sono volute poi ore per riscaldarci.

We had a nearly uninterrupted rain, we even experimented the ‘high water’ circumstance, a rare event in the month of May. The municipality was unprepared, or anyway absent, therefore gangplanks were not provided. At a certain point we, and the majority of tourists, had to take off socks and shoes and walk in the water. That was freezing cold, and it took us hours to warm up.

Non potevamo mancare un tè al mitico Caffè Florian, la cui atmosfera settecentesca ci ha avvolte dandoci la sensazione di essere in un’altra epoca. Di certo non aspetterò altri 15 anni prima di tornare a Venezia.

We could not miss a cup of tea in the legendary Caffè Florian, where the eighteenth-century atmosphere enveloped us while giving the feeling of living in another time. It is certain that I will not wait another 15 years before going back to Venice.

Una gita veloce – A quick trip

La scorsa settimana sono stata a Roma per incontrare Spicelines. Seguo il suo blog da diverso tempo, scrive di cucina ma con un approfondimento storico/culturale che rende i suoi post un’occasione unica per imparare qualcosa. Il suo è uno stile elegante e raffinato, ed anche se non ho realizzato tutte le ricette che nel tempo ha proposto, quando l’ho fatto non mi sono trovata che bene.

Last week I went to Rome to meet with Spicelines. I have been following her blog for a while, she writes about cooking but with in-depth historical/cultural research so that her posts are an unique occasion to learn. Her style is elegant and refined and although I haven’t tried all the recipes that she suggested, when I did I was very happy with the results.

Per esempio i limoni conservati sotto sale, di cui ho parlato recentemente; oppure la sua ricetta di fichi arrostiti che mi ha dato l’ispirazione per una più modesta ma squisita composta di pesche.
Uno dei post che più mi ha divertita è stato quello su : ‘Tre tipi essenziali di pepe turco’ . Dico divertita pensando a quanto io sia rozza come gusti e palato rispetto a lei. Sapevo che preparava un viaggio in Italia ed allora abbiamo deciso qualche tempo fa di incontrarci a Roma.

For instance the salt preserved lemons of which I recently wrote, or I was inspired by her recipe of roasted figs to prepare a more modest peach compote.
One of the most amusing posts that she wrote was the one on: ‘Three essential Turkish peppers’. I say 'amusing' thinking of how rough my tastes and my buds are in comparison to hers. I knew that she was preparing a trip to Italy and some time ago we decided to meet in Rome.

Abbiamo fatto una cosa da turisti, siamo andate a Campo dei’ Fiori.
Non c’ero mai stata e volevo vedere coi miei occhi questa celebre piazza. Naturalmente ora è invasa dai turisti e la maggior parte dei banchi offre merci senza alcun interesse, oppure poco ‘romane’.

Come il signore qui sopra che spremeva melograne (provenienti dal sud America e del tutto fuori stagione per noi) per la gioia degli avventori.
Tuttavia ne è valsa la pena, i mercati sono sempre pieni di vita ed ho potuto mostrare alla mia amica la varietà di carciofi, per esempio, e le puntarelle, che credo non si mangino che a Roma e dintorni.

We did what tourists do, we went to Campo dei’ Fiori. I never was there before and I wanted to see this famous square. Of course now it is a tourists’ fiefdom and the majority of stalls offers uninteresting wares, or very little ‘roman’.

Like the gentleman above who was squeezing pomegranates (coming from South America and absolutely out of season for us) to the joy of the passers by.
But we enjoyed the visit, markets are always full of life and I could show to my friend the variety of artichokes, for instance, and the ‘puntarelle’.

Non abbiamo potuto fare a meno di comprare dei pomodori secchi, non che io ne vada pazza ma il venditore ci ha suggerito di metterli in vaso con aglio, capperi, acciughe, pepeoncino e coprire il tutto con olio di oliva. Cosa che ho fatto appena tornata a casa. Dopo appena qualche giorno l’olio ha già preso un sapore delizioso.
Non so se li userò mai, ma già guardarli mi dà quel ‘sapore di casa’ che mi scalda il cuore.

We had to buy sundried tomatoes, of which I am not particularly fond, but the salesman suggested to put them in a jar with capers, anchovies, garlic, chilli and cover with olive oil. This I did as soon as I arrived home, and after just a few days the oil already developed a delicious taste.
I do not know if I will ever use them, but just looking at the jar gives me a ‘taste of home’ that warms up my heart.

Un matrimonio - ‘A marriage’

Qualche giorno fa c’è stato a Firenze un matrimonio che ha tenuto vivi i pettegolezzi di tutta la città: si sono sposati due giovani indiani appartenenti a famiglie molto, molto benestanti.

Sono arrivati 900 ospiti per festeggiarli durante 3 giorni di feste degne delle ‘Mille e.una Notte’, per concludersi infine col matrimonio vero e proprio secondo rito indù in una delle ville più belle delle colline fiorentine.

Prima di andare oltre vorrei chiedere di evitare facili commenti sulla crisi, i poveri ed i ricchi, ingiustizie sociali, eccetera. Scrivo questo post solo per la spettacolarità dell’evento, un’occasione eccezionale che ha dato molto, molto lavoro alla città ed a molte persone.

A few days ago Florence was animated by gossip about a marriage: 2 young Indians belonging to very wealthy families were married here.

900 guests arrived in order to celebrate the couple during 3 days of parties that could have been described in ‘A thousand and one nights’. On the last evening the wedding was held in one of the finest Florentine villas following the Hindu tradition.

Before I continue, I would like to ask to avoid easy comments about the economic crisis, the poor and the wealthy, social injustice and so on. I am writing this post only to share about a spectacular event, an outstanding occasion that gave much, much work to the city and to several people.

In piazza Ognissanti è stato eretto un enorme gazebo dove gli ospiti potevano ritrovarsi e consumare cibi e bevande. Tanto per darvi un’idea della trasformazione, a sinistra è la piazza, col suo monumento centrale, a destra col monumento inglobato all’interno del gazebo.

In piazza Ognissanti an enormous gazebo was erected; the guest could meet, food and beverages were available. To give an idea of the transformation, on the left is a picture of the piazza with the central monument, on the left the monument how it was incorporated in the interior decoration.

Lascerò che le immagini parlino per me, non ho veramente molto da dire tranne la mia meraviglia alla trasformazione della piazza.

I will let the pictures speak for me, I haven’t much to comment either than my amazement at the transformation of the square.

Ho avuto la fortuna di poter entrare un attimo grazie ad un’amicizia molto speciale. Il servizio di sicurezza era così imponente che non si arrivava nemmeno a dare una sbirciatina fra le fronde delle piante che circondavano la struttura.

I was so lucky to be able to get in for a moment, thanks to a very special friendship. The security was so impressive that nobody was allowed to sneak a peak through the branches of the plants surrounding the structure.

E prima che me lo chiediate: no, io non sono stata invitata alle feste, ma come avrei voluto andarci...
And before you ask me: no, I wasn’t invited to the parties, but would I have liked it...

In piscina - ‘Swimming’

Due volte alla settimana vado a nuotare. In genere arrivo verso le 8 del mattino perché più tardi la piscina è troppo affollata; nuoto una ventina di minuti sul dorso e per le 9 sono di nuovo a casa, pronta a cominciare la giornata.

Nuotare mi fa bene alla schiena, oltre che a tenermi in forma, ma un aspetto collaterale che ora trovo molto importante, è che i movimenti ritmici e regolari del mio corpo mi consentono di liberare la mente.

E’ come una sorta di meditazione, un momento di intenso raccoglimento in cui non vengo distratta da nessun elemento esterno. La maggior parte delle volte faccio programmi ed organizzo le cose da fare.

Twice a week I go swimming. I usually arrive around 8 because later the pool is too crowded; I swim for about 20 minutes on the back and around 9 I am home again, ready to start my day.

Swimming is good for my back and keeps me in shape, but a side effect that I now find very important is that the rhythmic and regular strokes allow me to free my mind.
It is a kind of meditation, a moment of intense thoughtfulness in which I have no outside distractions.
Most of the time I make plans and get organised.

Ieri per esempio tornata a casa ho fatto la marmellata di arance amare ed i limoni sotto sale.
Fare conserve di qualsiasi tipo mi dà un’intensa soddisfazione. Dev’essere un istinto primordiale quello di fare provviste, serbare il gusto e l’aroma dei cibi freschi, ed accumulare per l’inverno.

In realtà poi non mangio né tengo per me tutta la marmellata che faccio, spesso la regalo a chi so che l’apprezzerà. Anche questo mi dà soddisfazione (mi accontento di semplici cose!).

Yesterday for instance I came home and made marmalade and preserved lemons.
Preserving food of whatsoever kind gives me an intense pleasure. Stocking up on food must be a primordial instinct, and also to preserve the taste and flavour of fresh produce, or generally accumulate for Winter.

In reality I do not eat nor keep for myself all the jam that I make, very often I give it away to those that I know will appreciate it. This also gives me great satisfaction (I am happy with simple things!).

Sul lato cucito, ho finalmente tagliato un vestito con un tessuto comprato in Sri Lanka. E’ una mussola di cotone talmente fine che sembra seta.

E poi mi sto cimentando col cambiare la fodera interna ad una giacca di Prima Figlia. Ho ricavato un modello di carta, ma vi assicuro che è stata un’impresa, tanto era stracciata la stoffa. Sembrava di lavorare con una camicia delle mummie di Roccapelago

As far as sewing is concerned, I finally cut a dress with a fabric that I bought in Sri Lanka. It is a cotton muslin so fine that it feels like silk.

I am also dealing and fighting with the lining of a jacket belonging to First Daughter. I made a paper patter but let me tell you how difficult I found it so ragged the fabric was. I thought I was working with one of the shirts of the Roccapelago's mummies.

Knitting again

Pasqua è stato un turbinio di impegni, fra incontri familiari, un compleanno, visite di amici lontani. Tutte cose che mi hanno scaldato il cuore e riempita di gioia, a compensare la tristezza e la noia di un tempo uggioso, piovoso ed inclemente.

Seconda figlia è rientrata a Firenze, non che l’abbia vista molto perché passa molto tempo col suo ragazzo. Ma va bene così, la sento per telefono, è affettuosa e premurosa; saperla in città e non troppo lontana mi è sufficiente.

Easter has been a flurry of engagements: family reunions, a birthday, visits form far away friends. All this made me happy and joyful, almost a compensation for the sadness and bore of a tedious, rainy and inclement weather.

Second Daughter came back to Florence, not that I have seen much of her since she spends a lot of time with her boyfriend. But this is all right, we speak over the phone, she is affectionate and caring: knowing that she is in town and not too far away is enough for me.

E’ rientrata con un paio di stivaletti molto alla moda (credo) e subito ho pensato a questi. Detto, fatto. Questo è il classico lavoretto che dà soddisfazione immediata, in una serata si lavora rapidamente un paio di scalda caviglie.

She arrived with very fashionable (I think) new ankle boots which immediately brought these to my mind. No sooner said than done. This is the classical little work that gives immediate satisfaction. one evening is enough to complete a pair of ankle warmer.

Come mio solito ho esagerato, 3 paia sono davvero più che abbastanza, soprattutto con la primavera alle porte (speriamo).
Meglio sarebbe procurarsi delle scarpette come queste, che ne dite?

As always I exaggerated,3 pairs are really more than enough especially with Spring coming up (hopefully). It would be better to purchase pretty shoes like these ones, what do you think?

Reader e gli altri - ‘Reader and the others’

Non so voi, ma io seguo i blog che mi interessano attraverso Reader. Mi ha quindi gettata nel più profondo abisso la recente notizia che dal 1° luglio questo servizio cesserà.
Mi sono messa alla ricerca di un’alternativa che funzionasse bene sia col mio PC che con l’iPad.

Pulse mi è piaciuto come presentazione e facilità di lettura. E’ intuitivo, non necessita di grande studio. Tuttavia non mi consente di lasciare un commento sui blog quando uso l’iPad. L’ho segnalato, mi hanno gentilmente risposto dopo due settimane (capisco che abbiano altro da fare) dicendomi che studieranno la cosa. Ma io nel frattempo sono passata ad altro.

I do not know about you, but I follow the blogs I am interested in through Reader. Therefore I was thrown into the deepest abyss when I recently heard that from the 1st of July this service will not be available anymore.
I looked for an alternative that would work on my PC and on the iPad.

I liked the way Pulse looked and how easy it was to read. It is intuitive and doesn’t need great study. But when I use it with my iPad, I can not leave a comment on the blogs I visit. I wrote and they kindly wrote back 15 days later (I know that they have plenty to do) saying that they will improve this problem. But in the mean time I moved forward.

Feedly è dove ho trasferito i miei Google feeds. Ho cominciato ad usarlo: è facile, chiaro, semplicissimo. Sono ancora in fase esplorativa, per esempio non sono riuscita a trovare come bloccarne l’apertura automatica quando lancio Windows (si dice così?).
Non possedendo uno smartphone non ho potuto verificarne il funzionamento anche sul telefono.

I imported my Google feeds in Feedly. I started using it: it is easy, clear, very simple. I am still exploring, for instance I couldn’t find yet how to block its automatic opening when I open Windows (is this correct computer slang?).
Not owning a smartphone, I couldn’t verify if it also works on the phone.

Un altro cruccio informatico è questo: ogni tanto ricevo dei commenti anonimi che propongono di tutto, ma ultimamente ho cominciato a riceverne una quantità esagerata anche 15 al giorno. Li cancello, ovviamente, ma sarebbe simpatico se ci fosse un sistema per bloccarli: qualcuno mi sa dare un suggerimento?

This is another computer annoyance: from time to time I received anonymous comments offering a wide range of things, but lately I am receiving an awful amount of them, even 15 a day. I delete, of course, but it would be nice to discover a way to block: has anyone a suggestion?

Ho finalmente avuto indietro la macchina fotografica, non avrei mai pensato che 2 settimane senza mi avrebbero fatto sentire come se mancasse parte di me. I modesti acquerelli inclusi sono il frutto del mio lavoro in India (ce ne sono di peggio!). Sono raccolti in un quaderno/diario che ho cucito da me prima di partire.

I finally got my camera back, I would have never thought that 2 weeks without would make me feel as if part of me was missing. The modest watercolors shown here are part of my work in India (I made some worst specimens!). They are gathered in a notebook/journal that I stitched before I left.

Block printing

Una delle visite più interessanti durante il mio ultimo viaggio è stata quella al villaggio di Bagru la cui specialità è la tradizionale stampa su tessuto mediante blocchi di legno intagliati.

Conoscevo questo tipo di decorazione ma non avevo mai visto gli intagliatori al lavoro. E’ un incredibile lavoro di pazienza ed abilità, a volte gli intagli sono così fini e sottili che si stenta a credere che possano essere stati realizzati a mano e con tanta accuratezza.
Soprattutto vedendo come stanno seduti!

One of the most interesting visits during my last trip was visiting the village of Bagru, whose specialty is the traditional block printing of fabrics.

I knew about this technique but I had never seen the carvers at work. It is an unbelievable work of patience and skill, sometimes the carving is so fine and thin that it is difficult to believe that it has been hand made and with such accuracy.
Especially seeing how they are sitting!

Viene usato un legno durissimo a bassa usura (palissandro o tek), cosparso di calce su cui è poi riportato il disegno. Poi, via di cesello e martello: vedere lavorare gli intagliatori è affascinante, i loro colpi sono veloci e precisissimi. Dopo tutto cominciano il loro apprendistato giovanissimi.

A very hard wood is used (rosewood or teak) with a low wear rate, then covered in lime on which the drawing is transferred. Then, go with chisel and hammer: looking at the carvers at work is fascinating, their strokes are quick and very precise. After all they start their apprenticeship very early.

Ci era stato richiesto di portare un nostro disegno per farci fare un blocco, la qual cosa mi aveva gettata nel panico più totale. Avevo deciso di rinunciare e di limitarmi ad acquistare qualcosa di pronto, ma visto che l’India è un paese che mi ispira in molti modi, sono riuscita a buttar giù un paio di schizzi e questi sono i miei blocchi. We had been requested to bring a drawing to have our personal block made, and this had me in total panic. I decided to give up and buy a ready made one, but since India is a country that inspires me in many ways I was able to make a couple of sketches and these are my blocks. (Please excuse the quality of the pictures, my camera is still under repair)

Tanti, tantissimi mesi fa in una fredda ed umida giornata in cui la mia schiena si faceva sentire più del solito, ho fissato un viaggio in India, come una ribellione al progressivo avanzare della malattia.
Come molte cose prenotate in anticipo, anche questa partenza sembrave remota e un po’ irreale. Come sempre, i giorni sono passati e mi sono trovata con la valigia in mano senza quasi rendermene conto.

Many, many months ago in a cold and damp day in which my back pain was particularly intense, I booked a trip to India, almost a rebellion against the progression of the disease.
It happens that what has been booked with much advance seems very remote and a little unreal. As always happens the days passed and I found myself with the case in my hand nearly without realising it.

Questa volta mi sono unita ad un piccolo gruppo di pittori, qualcuno più bravo dell’altro, ma certamente tutti molto più esperti di me. Dapprima esitante, mi sono poi lasciata andare ad usare matita ed acquerelli; confesso di essere piuttosto soddisfatta dei risultati del mio ‘Diario Illustrato’'.

La mia macchina fotografica è rotta, quindi per adesso mostrerò altre cose scoperte in questo viaggio, come per esempio la tintura con indaco che mi ha interessata particolarmente. Purtroppo chi ci accompagnava non capiva nemmeno le mie domande, quindi sono rimasta con moti interrogativi. Mi è stato detto che la polvere d’indaco si scioglie nell’acqua senza additivi e che sono sufficienti solo 2 immersioni per avere un colore intenso contrariamente a quello che ho visto in Giappone. Sapevo che l’indaco indiano è molto più intenso, ma…senza additivi?

This time I joined a little group of painters, someone more expert than the other, but all of them certainly much more than me. Hesitant at first, I then let myself go and use pencil and watercolors; I confess that I am quite satisfied with the results of my ‘Visual Journal’.

My camera is broken, therefore for the time being I will show other things that I discovered during this trip, for instance the indigo dyeing that I was very interested in. Unfortunately the person accompanying us was unable to even understand my questions and therefore many questions went unanswered. I was told that powdered indigo is dispersed in water without addictives and that only 2 immersions are sufficient to obtain an intense colour, unlike what I saw in Japan. I knew that Indian indigo is much more intense but…no addictives?

Questo è un tessuto steso al sole ad asiugare che è stato preventivamente stampato con blocchi di legno (block printing) ed una miscela di fango per impedire la colorazione del motivo (resist dyeing).

Progetti - ‘Projects’

Parlare di nuovi progetti di cucito quando ancora devo terminare le due semplici camicie da notte tagliate tanto tempo fa, così tanto tempo che non mi ricordo quando, mi fa sentire una farfallina che svolazza di fiore in fiore. Il fatto è che il ‘cucito utile’ non mi interessa più di tanto, anzi direi che mi annoia.

Talking about new sewing projects when I still have to finish the 2 simple nightgowns that I cut some time ago, so long ago that I do not even remember when, makes me feel like a little butterfly that flutters about the flower garden. The fact is that ‘useful sewing’ doesn’t really interest me, I would rather say that it bores me.

Forse se la flanella invece di essere bianca fosse stata tinta con cipolla, carota e carciofi a quest’ora l’avrei già cucita. Oppure se dovessi fare un recupero creativo mi divertirei di più. Messa a tacere la mia voce interiore che tenta invano di ricordarmi di finire quello che ho cominciato prima di pensare ad altri progetti, mi sono regalata questi cartamodelli. La mia amica Neki, i cartamodelli se li fa, ma io non ho questa capacità, soprattutto quando si tratta di modelli stravaganti come questi, o almeno relativi ad indumenti che io un tempo non mi sarei mai sognata di indossare. Il mio armadio è pieno di indumenti ’da signora’ di una noia mortale. Ho voglia di sperimentare ed OSARE.

Maybe if the white flannel had been died with onion, carrot and artichoke I would have already sewn it. Or if I had to do some creative recycling, I would be more entertained. Hushed up my inner voice that uselessly tries to remind me to finish what I started before thinking about new projects, I gave myself the gift of these patterns. My friend Neki makes her own patterns, but I do not have this skill especially when speaking of eccentric clothing like these or at least clothing that till a short time ago I wouldn’t have dreamed of wearing. My wardrobe is full of ‘ladylike’ clothing, so boring. I have a wish to experiment and DARE.

Quando ero negli Stati Uniti ho comprato della lana per calzini, dovrebbe essere del tipo ‘self patterning’ cioè che crea un disegno man mano che si lavora. Il filato è finissimo ed ho dovuto procurarmi dei ferri circolari 2,5 e 3 mm.
When I was in the United States I purchased some self patterning yarn for socks. The wool is very fine and I had to buy circular knitting needles of 2,5 and 3 mm.

Sono difficilissimi da trovare in questa città, e apparentemente ne sono sprovvisti un paio di ‘negozi’ online che ho consultato. Mi sono poi ricordata di un knitting blog che seguo 'Fili e colori' . Con Maria Rosa ci siamo conosciute via blog, non l’ho mai incontrata di persona né sono collegata a lei in alcun modo. Ma ci tengo a segnalare la sua attività, ha molti articoli interessanti, il servizio è celere, e nel pacchetto ho trovato anche due campioncini di detergente per capi delicati (non sapeva che fosse destinato a me).
Cortesia ed efficienza, che si può desiderare di più!

They are very difficult to find in this town, and apparently were sold out in a couple of online shops . I then remembered the knitting blog 'Fili e colori' that I have been following for some time. I met Maria Rosa online, I never met her personally, neither we are connected in any way. But I want to mention her activity, she has very interesting items, the service is quick, and in the package I found 2 samples of wool detergent (she didn’t know that the package was for me).
Courtesy and efficiency, what can you ask more?

Verso Primavera –‘Towards Spring’

Direi che più che l’aria, è la luce ad essere cambiata. Le temperature sono ancora decisamente basse, ma già si avverte quel non so che che mette più energia nei nostri passi. Si comincia a vedere abbigliamento primaverile nelle vetrine, ed anche io sento un formicolio generale che mi fa desiderare un cambiamento, per quanto piccolo.
Magari mi compro un paio di stivaletti così, non tanto per gli stivaletti quanto per le ghette in lana ed i calzini di pizzo…proprio il mio stile!

I would say than more than the air, it is the light that has changed. Temperatures are still in the low range, but already that I-do-not-know-what that puts more energy into our steps can be felt. Springy clothing is showing up in the shops , and I too feel a general tingling that makes me wish for a change, however small.
Maybe I will buy these ankle boots, not really for the boots but for the knitted gaiters and lace socks…my style indeed!

Maglia ed uncinetto: sembra davvero realizzato artigianalmente chissà da quali mani, ma se non sbaglio questa casa di moda è una delle poche che produce in Italia quindi dovrebbero essere mani nostrane.

Knitting and crochet: this really seems handcrafted by unknown hands, but if I am not wrong this fashion company is one of the few that has the production in Italy, therefore the hands should be local.

Questo è un delizioso abito fotografato in non mi ricordo più quale vetrina. Anche qui la guarnizione ad uncinetto non sembra industriale, sicché se vogliamo essere alla moda conviene che ci diamo daffare.
This is a delightful dress, unfortunately I can not remember where I took the picture. Here as well the trimming looks crocheted and not industrial, therefore if we want to be fashionable it is better to put ourselves at work.

Per restare su questi colori, vorrei mostrare in che modo raffinato è stata confezionata una magnifica collana di occhio di tigre che mi è stata recenemente regalata da un caro amico.
La collana è stata scelta per essere indossata sulla camicia di seta che ho tinta a Los Angeles, qui in secondo piano. Lì per l'ì non avevo realizzato che il biglietto di accompagnamento riproduceva nel colore e nello stile la decorazione della camicia. Caro G., hai sbagliato mestiere!

To stay on the same colour, I wish to show in which refined way was wrapped a magnificent necklace made out of cat’s-eye recently given to me by a dear friend.
The necklace was chosen to be worn with the silk shirt that I dyed in Los Angeles, here shown in the back. On the spur of the moment I didn’t realise that the accompanying card was reproducing in colour and style the decoration of the shirt. Dear G., you are in the wrong job!

Febbraio - ‘February’

Ogni tanto succede ai miei blogamici di avere un momento di pausa e di non pubblicare niente per un certo tempo. E’ successo anche a me; il mio blog è un’occasione per condividere quello che faccio, la mia creatività, ma anche stati d’animo. Però certi fatti, certi dolori sono troppo intimi per metterli online e così mi sono ritirata per qualche tempo.
Oggi provo a ristabilire il contatto con bloglandia. Mi sono mancati i miei amici di penna, leggere di avventure, di viaggi, di riflessioni e soprattutto mi è mancato essere in contatto con lo sfaccettato mondo della creatività.

It happens sometimes to my blogfriends to have a period of pause so that nothing is posted for a while. It happened to me as well; my blog is the opportunity to share what I do, my creativity, but also my state of mind. However some circumstances, some pains are too intimate to be put online, therefore I withdrew for some time.

Today I try to re-establish a contact with blog-land. I missed my penpals, reading about adventures, travels, reflections and most of all I missed being in touch with the multifaceted world of creativity.

Ho fatto un piccolo corso di calligrafia, in due ore certo non potevo imparare molto. Mi sono divertita, mi piace provare nuove tecniche e chissà che un giorno non possano tornare utili. In realtà quando ero bambina ho cominciato a scrivere prima col lapis, poi con penna e pennino.
Ricordo quei gran boccioni di inchiostro che la maestra versava nel calamaio sul banco, la carta assorbente e le molte macchie sul quaderno. E la delizia di passare infine alla penna stilografica.

I took a little calligraphy workshop, of course in 2 hours I couldn’t learn much. I enjoyed it, I love to try new techniques and maybe one day they will come handy. As a matter of fact when I was a child I started writing first with a pencil and then with pen and nib.
I remember the very big bottle from which the teacher poured ink in the inkstand on the desk, the blotting paper and the many many stains on the copybook. And how delightful it was to finally write with the fountain pen.
