Institute for Art and Architecture

The architecture curriculum at the Academy of Fine Arts has historically proven to be reflective, intellectual, and experimental.
In recent years, architecture and architectural studies have been confronted with many disciplines challenging the legitimacy and the utility of architectural production. Many architects and schools of architecture believe that the “digital” is the future of architecture and the only way that architectural production can survive. Intellect therefore is replaced by intelligence.
At the Academy, we are undergoing a series of experimentations. In the next few years, the Academy will be implementing the new European reform; as a result, a series of uncertainties will be at the center of our curriculum. We will be constructing a new school of the future; the same enthusiasm and questioning will be at the center of our debates as it was felt at the time of the creation of Bauhaus.

Research units in formation at the academy:

Analogue Digital Produktion
Geography Landscapes Cities
Construction Material Technology
History Theory Criticism
Ecology Sustainability Conservation

In their 1st year at the Academy (exploration year), students learn through a multitude of analogue and digital tools that architecture is a complex endeavor which can be expressed in a variety of manners.
The 2nd and 3rd year students (bachelor degree 2007 onwards) are confronted with a variety of scales and the understanding of architecture as a social and political device in our societies.
The 4th and 5th year students (master degree 2007 onwards) are taught to think autonomously and learn to develop a thesis through research and an individual project.
A team of full, visiting and associate professors develops a series of research projects within the mentioned platforms. The projects are confronted, debated, and exhibited in a variety of formats. A series of workshops and lectures supports the research topics allowing the students and teachers to be evaluated through external expertise.
The Academy offers a comprehensive and open attitude toward the architect’s role in society. As a result, students should be able to choose their field of operation after graduation.
Architecture at the Academy is a combination of discourse and production - we do not distinguish between thinking and making. We believe that both are essential tools and material for architecture and consequently for architects.

Univ.Prof. Nasrine Seraji AA Dipl.RIBA
Head of Institute
