You will be able to warm up in the band room and/or jazz room before your session.

As we’re getting closer to the end of the school year, there are lots of things happening. Here’s what’s happening.

1. Wednesday, May 16 – Lakota Ridge Spring Concert, 6:30, 8:15 pm
2. Thursday, May 17 – Lakota Plains Spring Concert, 6:30, 8:00 pm
3. Monday, May 21 – Spring Concert at Lakota West High School-Red & White Symphonic Bands, Symphonic Winds, Concerto Concert with Symphonic Winds (Stephanie Belieu, Marimba, Rebecca Frederick, Clarinet)
4. Tuesday, May 22 – Spring Concert at the West Freshman School, report time for BOTH bands is 6:00 pm. We are performing a piece with both bands combined and this rehearsal is the ONLY rehearsal we have with the combined band.
5. Wednesday, May 23 – Dinner at Smash Burger. Come and eat and the band makes money!
6. Tuesday, May 29 – 7th period band has final exam.
7. Thursday, May 31 – 6th period band has final exam.

ROOKIE MARCHER DAY, Thursday May 31st, 1:00-4:00 pm. All current Freshman who will be in marching band for the 2012-13 school year should be there. Students are dismissed early from school this day. There are no activity buses. Students need their instruments for Rookie Marcher Day.

Students should wear athletic shoes and socks (no flip-flops or sandals-they will have blisters in a matter of minutes), and they should wear comfortable athletic clothing.

ROOKIE MARCHER PARENT MEETING, 3:30 PM. All rookie marcher parents should plan on attending this meeting. You will learn everything you ever wanted to know about marching band at Lakota West and more.

Student Accounts – Effective June 1, 2012 students will no longer be able to accumulate funds in their student accounts.  Students will be able to apply any funds that are currently in the account following our previous guidelines, but cannot accumulate any additional funds.  This was done to bring us in line with the IRS guidelines for 501c3 organizations.   You will still need to check your Charms account to see what payments are outstanding for trips and other fees.   We are working with the school district and band directors to see if there is another way that these types of accounts can be offered through the school district.  Please continue to watch for updates on alternate solutions.

Charms Maintenance – At the start of each fiscal year we must “roll over” the Charms system.   The Lakota West Upbeat Club’s financial year is June 1 – May 31.   Charms and Pay-Pal will be off-line June 1^st – 3rd and will be back up on June 4^th.   Please do not make any updates in Charms or make any payments via Pay-Pal during this time.   We are moving the Band Camp payment that is currently due on June 1 to be due on June 15^th so this outage will be less of an inconvenience to everyone.

Because of the significant change to the Upbeat Club’s largest
fundraiser, we’re looking to spread the word about the “new” Kroger
Card Program which requires people to register their Kroger Plus Card
in order to earn money for the Lakota West Bands.

We’ll be setting up Laptop Registration Stations at the last concerts
of the year at the Junior Highs, the Freshman School and the High
School.

We’re looking for 1-2 extra people to help man the stations. You
don’t have to be an expert…. You just have to be able to follow the
step by step instructions we’ll have at each station. There will be
other “experts” working with you. We’re also looking for additional
laptops to use at the Registration Station. If you can volunteer as
well as bring a laptop with you, that would be appreciated.

The concerts we need help with are:
Ridge Jr. High Concerts – Wed. May 16 – 6:15pm until about 9pm
Plains Jr. High Concerts – Thurs. May 17 – 6:15pm until about 9pm
Red/White/Winds Concerts – Mon. May 21 – 6:30pm until about 9:30pm
Freshman Concerts – Tues. May 22 – 6:30pm until about 9pm

1. Congratulations to the Red and White Symphonic Bands and to Symphonic Winds for earning Superior ratings at the OMEA State Large Group Adjudicated Event this past Friday evening at the East Freshman School. The bands all played superbly. We look forward to having all our Freshman in those bands next year where more great things will happen.
2. Those Freshman students who were selected for Symphonic Winds for the 2012-13 school year are reminded that there is a meeting for Symphonic Winds after school on Tuesday May 8th in the band room. The students need to ride the activity bus to Main Campus after school on Tuesday.
3. Our next and final concert will be on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. We are playing a piece with the combined Freshman bands. We cannot rehearse together until the evening of the concert. With that in mind, we need all the Freshman Band students to report at 6:00 pm. This will give us adequate time to both warm-up and tune each band as well as giving us time to rehearse together.
4. Playing tests will occur this week with both bands on Thursday during sectional time. The playing test will be on the march for each band. Students will be told in class on Monday exactly what measures they will be tested on.
5. Final Quarterly Assessments will occur the last week of school following the schedule established by the school. All Freshman band students will play the entire circle of 4ths, all 12 scales, from memory using the rhythm pattern announced in class. The students know what that is.
6. Lastly, all Freshman that are participating in marching band should plan on attending Rookie Marcher Day on Thursday, May 31st from 1:00-4:00 pm at the main campus. This is a requirement and if a student looks like they are going to have a conflict, they need to communicate that with Mr. Chumley, Mr. Racic, and Mr. Snyder as soon as possible. This is a very important session where students will learn the basics of marching, meet with the Leadership Team, and receive their music for marching band. Again, ALL Freshman who are going to be in marching band need to be at Rookie Marcher Day on Thursday, May 31st from 1-4 pm.

Don’t forget to start ordering Scrip gift cards if you haven’t been in the habit to start building your students band account. Band camp is right around the corner and wouldn’t it be nice to have money in your student’s account to put towards the remaining payments for band fees?

Here is all you need to do:

Ask friends and family to order gift cards that they will use anyway to purchase fast food, fine dining or use at department stores. They receive full value for the amount paid and an extra percentage is provided to your account.

Fill out the order form including all student information and phone number and send the completed form with payment to the SCRIP program coordinator.

1. Congratulations to Symphonic Winds for their outstanding performance at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music’s Corbett Auditorium last Friday night, April 27. Symphonic Winds was invited to play a concert with the CCM Wind Symphony. Our students were amazed and wowed by the CCM Wind Symphony. What an amazing learning opportunity.
2. Red and White Symphonic Bands and Symphonic Winds will be performing at the OMEA State Large Group Adjudicated Event on Friday, May 4, 2012 at Lakota East Freshman School. Times will be announced to the students.
3. There will be an important meeting of all members of Symphonic Winds for the 2012-13 school year immediately after school on Tuesday, May 8 beginning at 3:00. Freshman students who are in Symphonic Winds next year should ride the activity bus over to Main Campus on Tuesday and should be picked up around 3:30 pm. Plans for next year are being discussed with some decisions made. It is very important for those students to be at this meeting.
4. The next performance (and last of the year) for the Freshman will be on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. The concert will begin at 7:00 pm with 6th period, followed by 7th period, followed by a performance of the combined Freshman Bands. Mr. Snyder will be guest conducting at this concert.
5. The last event of the year for the Freshman will be on Thursday, May 31, 2012. This is Rookie Marcher Day. All students who will be in the Marching Band next school year will meet after school and learn the basics of marching band. All students should plan on being there for this rehearsal.
6. The last playing test of the year will be to play the entire circle of 4ths from memory. 4th quarter assessments will be held during the last week of school and the students will take their playing test at that time.

That’s it for this week. As we enter the last month of school, students should continue to practice to prepare for the Spring Concert and their quarterly assessment.
