I can't wait until it's sunny all day and we'll get to wear in those pretty skirts and dresses we have stored in the back our closets. Not to mention, some fancy footwear to frolic around in because everything seems better when the sun is shining. Net-a-Porter has the great options for your wardrobe transition to snap into the spring season. Donna Karan and Acne have great spring sandal options with elastic multi-straps that will pair perfectly with any look you want to don. One of my dearest boutique for accessories and beyond is Mirari on 70 East 1st Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Back in May, I divulged that if I were to ever own a boutique, it would look much like this one. Unfortunately, I just got word today that Mirari will be closing its doors for good this Sunday, March 8th, 2010. It's so sad to see Mirari go, as the quaint, feminine decor alone would make any girl swoon with enchantment. From now until Sunday, Mirari will be offering 50-90% off all furniture and decor. So I strongly advise everyone to get there as quick as your Giuseppe's can take you there. I wish the Mirari team the best of luck on all their future endeavors. Mirari, you will be surely missed.

Visit the closing sale at Mirari at 70 East First Street, New York, NY.

Jan Ahlgren Fall/Winter 2010

Paris-based label Jan Ahlgren is the creative collective that embarked on their first collection just last season. This Fall/Winter 2010, Jan Ahlgren is claiming their stake in the fashion biz with prime tailoring, exceptional execution and individualistic construction in both menswear and womenswear. Black and white is the canvas for a gamut of atypical yet sensible shapes. The quality of fabrics are not spared in production while the men's pieces soar with a boyish - experimental aesthetic. The 34-page art book that accompanies the collection concludes that Jan Ahlgren is a thoughtful and cohesive collective whose art shines in the beauty of their subtleties.

For more information on Jan Ahlgren, log onto www.janahlgren.com.

Why the Prada Fall/Winter 2010 Collection Made So Much Sense

When news broke of an eyebrow-raising cast of models for the Prada show, fashion news sites and blogs buzzed over the possibility of having plus-sized models in the showlist. Speculation and anticipation grew over which models would walk and what the collection would look like. Unsurprisingly, many were displeased with the collection itself and the model choices of the so-called "curvy" models like Doutzen Kroes, Allesandra Ambrosio, Lara Stone, Catherine McNeil and Miranda Kerr. The use of Victoria's Secret angels was controversial being that they are normally not casted for a high-fashion house like Prada. Reactions raged as fashion websites felt as the use of "curvy" models was a tactic of trend.

Let's all face it, most of us are not a sample size zero. The fashion industry has recently made strong strides to make certain that the models on the runways and in campaigns are healthy. Yet, communicating that to the general public is a work in progress. Nonetheless, the CFDA is addressing the issues of weight, age and eating disorders in models with their Health Initiative. V Magazine released their Spring/Summer 2010 size issue in January featuring spreads with plus-sized models like Crystal Renn. While models themselves spoke out about their feelings on body image in the fashion industry. There was a fantastic segment on the Ralph Lauren "photo-doctoring" scandal with Fillipa Hamilton on the Today Show in October 2009, that not only enlightened those outside the fashion industry but opened the minds of those with stark opinions in the matter.

It was an important statement that was made by Miuccia to release a collection that was tailored to compliment the body shapes of average-sized women. Ruffles and pleats accentuated the bust line offering a womanly silhouettes. High necklines dominated the construction of full skirt dresses in dark woodsy hues. Cable-knit sweaters, skirts and dresses made for the chicest look a librarian could ever sport.

Prada Fall/Winter 2010 was a smart collection and even smarter show. There was the perfect balance of the standard runway models like Natasha Poly and Mariacarla Boscono and the reality of models like Miranda and Doutzen. The clothing was geared to the average shaped woman that would be buying pieces. The collection was thoughtful, feminine and exhibited what a true lady can look like. In turn, women should feel united through the gracefulness of Miuccia's pieces rather than debating over why a shapely model was included her show. Essentially, fashion is for the masses to admire, critique, inspire, purchase and even to create a lifestyle around. Therefore, our runway shows, our advertising campaigns, and editorial spreads should substantiate the idea of fashion for all shapes. Now, if and when we will ever see that is a whole other blog post.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, feelings, concerns and opinions on the word "curvy", plus sized models, the current state of the modeling industry or anything else that you would like to comment on.

Contributing Editor: Black Magic by Jakob Axelman & Allison Miller

I hadn't checked out the new Contributing Ed website in a few weeks, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a women's story in the traditionally all menswear editorials featured in the famed online mag. I loved the airy and insouciant photography by Jakob Axelman and the youthful, eclectic styling with the perfect use of color. I was even more pleased to find that the styling was done by Allison Miller, a former-boss and stylist that showed me the tricks of the trade while interning for her some time ago. She is someone that I have immense amount of respect for and her talent speaks for herself. Enamored by the sheer production of the presentation and the romantic mystique of the collection, I was dying to get a few words from the designer on her inspiration, the woman she designs for & her feelings on fashion today. Rachel was kind enough to share her thoughts and Aneta was sweet enough to get our conversation on video.
Alejandro Ingelmo was shown at a spacious studio on Crosby Street. The women's styles were commanding with a 5 inch heel minimum. Most styles consisted of a brushed suede base, layered with a leather crosshatching detail, affording dimension and abstract shape. Other notable styles included sky-high, black suede wedge boots and metallic, peep-toe clogs. A solid collection of shoes with dependability to be on-trend for the fall season.

Cynthia Rowley

This season was vast change from Cynthia Rowley's whimsical, plum fairy-esque collection for Spring/Summer 2010, yet a pleasant surprise nonetheless. For her F/W '10 collection, Cynthia was serious, dark and sexy . Pops of primary shades and geometric prints, blended superbly with new fabrications and technicalities in design. Breaking up any hint of monotony in color was pale water-colored prints from head to toe paired with powerful red shoes. The collection took "edgy" into a cogent, liberating direction with sheer femininity.

Frank Tell

Frank Tell showed one of the most noteworthy collections during New York fashion week with inspirations stemming from muse Penelope Tree, Star Trek, and the Padaung tribes of Burma. Construction was not spared with a surfeit of hand-knit cashmere and wool sweater dresses and coats. Precision of detail was shown with metal eyelets on leather mini dresses and alligator-stamped lamb skirts paired with draped kerchiefs. Creamy Wolford tights pulled together the monochromatic looks and offered a dreamy canvas to exhibit architectural platform shoes, handcrafted by Raphael Young.

Jeremy Laing

Jeremy Laing has always been a Canadian personal favorite. His intrinsic attention to detail makes his thoughtful aesthetic appealing to the learned eye. Capelets, vests and jackets were trimmed with a hunter's paradise of muskrat, racoon, coyote, and beaver furs. Bubble knits provided dimensional layers to asymmetrical silhouettes. The simple column gowns that stood on their own gleamed amongst shadowy muted colors. Click here for video of models at the show being prepped for the presentation.

Julian Louie

Julian Louie has been on my radar for quite some time. So, needless to say I was looking forward to seeing his F/W '10 collection. The installation was set on a pure backdrop that played an imaginative short-film of girls donning pieces from the collection. Foreground, were mannequins that showcased beautifully romantic pieces that were complimentary to all the areas on the frame. While perfectly-posed rolling racks, dangled elegant skirts and dresses with incredible detail.

Risto

Tim Hamilton

Wayne

#NYFW Day 0

The massive amounts of snow fall may have delayed my day a bit but definitely didn't stop me from hitting the first unofficial day of fashion week in New York. Although the snow flurries killed my hair, I had the pleasure of bumping into Lani and Erin of Sugar Rock Catwalk and Deanne and Tamara of Dream Sequins. First stop was Geren Ford, who had great brushed silk tops, trousers, lush greens and hardware ankle boots. Next, would be the presentation for Yuna Yang. I was pleasantly surprised to see a great deal of colors unexpected for fall that blended perfectly. My favorite piece from the collection was a sheer purple silk chiffon dress with tiered layers of french lace. I'm looking forward to seeing more from Yuna. Then, it was off to Gen-Art, where Gar-de, Nomia, Sophomore and Wesfeld showed simultaneously at Drive In Studios. A perfect way to kick off New York Fashion Week.

Video Interview with Film Wonder's Roger DaCosta

I had the distinct pleasure of being interviewed by Roger DaCosta, founder of Film Wonder, a media production company based here in New York. Consider this a small overview and crash course for all of those who may like fashion but don't necessarily have a strong understanding about all of its new developments. Let's jump into how the revolution of new + old media has affected the fashion industry and the way consumers are buying.

Teen Vogue

There are endless amounts of girls worldwide that have this undying obsession with the fashion industry, but do they understand the dramatic change it has undergone within the last two years? Fashion is without a doubt an exciting industry to admire or even to be involved in. Although, some outsiders believe fashion to be frivolous and in some ways like a unimportant novelty. Yet, it is a thriving industry that makes our economy go around. It may difficult for some to look at a $400 shirt in Bergdorf Goodman and think to themselves "This is a great investment, its for the betterment of our economy!" But even those uninterested in designer clothing can have a strong impact on the evolution of fashion with the flick of a remote and the click of a mouse. Fashion is like a circle. It is continuous, which means in order to keep things fresh, it must exhibit change.

The most apparent change in fashion first began with its visibility in our movie theaters. The silver screen lent women everywhere the ability to be “fabulous” with motion pictures like Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada. Both movies grossed $83.2 million dollars combined during opening weekend. It was clear that due to both film’s fashionable nature, a new found popularity of fashion emerged amongst the women who appreciated the “fabulousity”, style and clothing. Motion pictures were the first place we began to see the rise of fashion’s popularity in mass media but it most definitely did not stop there.

Lauren Conrad on The Hills

Reality television reared its trashy head into the realm of fashion when fashion-based reality television shows had been released. Fashion competition shows like Project Runway, The Fashion Show, Stylist and Stylista made a remarkable impact on cable networks with a strong and devout following. Viewers tuned in every week to see their favorite design hopeful get kicked off the show, leaving on-lookers to believe it was as easy as it looked on their television screens. While The Hills and The City on the MTV network revealed the ins and outs of internships at huge publications like Teen Vogue and public relations houses like People’s Revolution. These quote on quote 'real life' reality television shows gave young girls everywhere the hope that they one day could have the chance to break into an industry that was deemed glamorous and easy as pie. Forty-two inch plasma television sets weren’t the only screens where fashion's media attention shifted either.

There is no question that internet has affected the way that we have looked at media on a whole. Yet the rise of social media outlets has seriously affected the way that designers are interacting with consumers and how consumers are buying. You may have heard of social media before but what is it and how in the world has it affected fashion? According to Mashable, the number one source of social media news and development on the internet, says that social media is “a new type of media that creates a world conversation and dialogue. Instead of being fed news (a one-to-many dissemination approach) everyone is welcomed to be a content creator and to generate a debate around that content.” With that definition in mind, think of how many ways social media has affected the way that you use the internet. Do you blog? Do you read websites and comment on the content? Do you post information or photos on forums, Facebook or Twitter? Then you are a part of the social media movement.

The impact that Facebook and Twitter has had on our daily lives is nearly immeasurable. Yet, when it comes to the fashion industry, Facebook and Twitter has revolutionized the way fashion houses, designers and brands interact with their consumer. By creating a dialogue directly with the consumer, brands (mass-marketed or high-end) has in turn built a strong relationship through Facebook fan pages, Twitter followers and “at-replies.” In turn, the consumer feels a sense of belonging, a sense of loyalty that has driven sales for these brands with the click of a mouse.

Lookbook.nu

This sense of belonging and loyalty does not stop at Facebook and Twitter, yet is propelled into an entirely other distinctive level with user-generated communities websites. Lookbook.nu is the quintessence of personal style communities, in which users from around the world post photographs of outfits and personal style. Lookbook.nu currently generates 2.5 million unique visitors. Strong partnerships between user-generated communities and fashion houses are built based on the loyalty of the users and the influx of daily unique views on these websites. Virtually speaking, brand advertising on user-generated communities sites essentially pay for themselves.

Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2010 / PRNewswire

Lastly, but definitely not least, is the uber world of blogging. Fashion bloggers generally post opinionated articles and news and at the touch of a keyboard is as immediate as the information is released. Initially, fashion bloggers received no attention from fashion insiders and were often looked down upon, but that game quickly changed this past Fashion Week for the Spring/Summer 2010 collections. Kelly Cutrone, owner of mega fashion public relations company, People’s Revolution, said in a December 2009 New York Times article, “There has been a complete change this year. Do I think, as a publicist, that I now have to have my eye on some kid who’s writing a blog in Oklahoma as much as I do an editor from Vogue? Absolutely. Because once they write something on the Internet, it’s never coming down. And it’s the first thing a designer is going to see.” There have been endless accounts of fashion bloggers becoming instant internet celebrities and as a result been signed to the top modeling agencies, seated front row at the most prestigious fashion shows and even featured in major brand advertising campaigns.

Blue Planet by Mark Pillai in Harper's Bazaar UK/Fashion Gone Rogue

Fashion is constantly changing and evolving; if it didn’t it would not be such a thriving industry. Sometimes, the simple day-to-day things that we take part in can be a contribution to the way that we use media. The ever-changing nature of fashion allows everyone involved to keep up with "the times" in this perpetually developing digital age. So, the next time you blog about those great pair of shoes you got on sale, the next time you join your favorite designer's Facebook fanpage or post a photo of your chic outfit on Lookbook, just think of how you too are affecting the way fashion is changing.

(References: Popcrunch, Box Office Mojo, Mashable)

Margo Petitti: Stand-Out Neckwear for Men and Women

Texture and quality of neckwear is often what makes scarves such a stand-out accessory that can stand on its own. This past fall, there would be no outfit sported without a great scarf draped around my neck a few times. Yet, finding a great scarf that you will wear over and over again can often be a difficult task. Margo Petitti makes beautiful neckwear out of men's suiting swatches that have impeccable quality and aesthetic which can be worn by both men and women. I love the idea of using menswear materials and fabrics in a scarf, it instantly has an allure that women want to have and quality that men seek for. You can find Margo Petitti's neckwear at Takashimaya on 693 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10022. The finalists included Burkman Bros, Richard Chai, Caulfield Preparatory, J. Anticipation builds as the winner will be announced on February 12th, 2009. Yet, there is a great deal of buzz surrounding these six finalists. None more than around Caulfield Preparatory, the menswear line designed by Vincent Flumiani. Caulfield Prep launched their first collection for the Fall/Winter 2009 season, which you can view here. Flumiani has a knack for constructing fashion-forward basics that are masculine man friendly. His Spring/Summer 2010 collection is fresh and has a mass appeal to men everywhere that want to casually dress like the GQ man, so to speak. Looking ahead, I believe its fair to say that Vincent Flumiani and the Caulfield Prep brand have a long, successful path ahead of them.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Billy Reid

Although, GQ isn't the only outlet creating excitement around designers and fashion. In a matter of days, we'll all be scrambling from show to show, venue to venue, presentation to presentation. Now before all the pre-fashion week stress builds up, let's take a breather and preview what will be hitting the runways.

Rebecca Taylor, the New York-based designer, known for her whimsical, wearable, lady-like appeal, revealed her inspiration behind this upcoming Fall/Winter 2010 season. Think of a collection set in Paris in the 70s with the attitude of a urban NYC girl. Expect fresh silhouettes, femininity, leopard faux fur, and a myriad of "overly-loved" washed fabrics in military olives, golds, and other dusty hues. It's definitely going to exciting to see a strong sportswear influence infuse itself into this collection. Billie Piper plays Belle, the high-priced escort who anonymously blogged about her double life on the Belle Du Jour blog. Billie interviews Brooke Magnati who recently revealed her identity in November 2009 as a research scientist at Bristol Initiative for Research of Child Health in England. Brooke Magnati is the first blogger to have a television show cover her story and her life. The primetime drama is a delectable show sultry enough for men and women alike. It's a guilty pleasure for me and will definitely be one for you as well. The film is whimsical, impassioned and stimulating. Yet, this is not the only series of films or editorials that Test Magazine has released. Test is redefining what an visitor can experience on a fashion website with photography, film, design and music as the new waves of fashion editorials. Jaime Perlman, the art director of British Vogue, launched Test in efforts to allow moving image be a new way to highlight a creative team's efforts in a experimental test shoot. Every director, photographer, make-up artist, hairstylist, stylist, fashion designer is properly credited in each project.

In a recent interview with the Business of Fashion, Perlman said "people are always fascinated by what inspires other people and often borrow inspiration for themselves. On both levels, I think what we’re seeing is a move towards a more inclusive and open fashion universe." That is precisely what you receive through the experience on Test, new concepts that challenge the way you traditionally look at a collection, a photograph, a film, or a model.

For more information, please log onto test.co.uk.

Guest Post on BobbinTalk

My lovely friend Aneta Genova at BobbinTalk, was on holiday this week in Punta Cana. It goes without saying that earthquake in the nation's Capital of Port-au-Prince is one of the most horrible natural disasters to hit us on a global level.

It is beyond difficult to make light of such a devastating tragedy but media coverage has been strong and twitter has been a powerful outlet to exchange news, updates and photographs to help the public, globally connect to help get through this havoc.

Please log onto cnn.com/haitimissing to connect with with missing family members. Share your news, links and photos on ireport.com. And lastly, please donate to help aid the relief of this devastating natural disaster through Haiti's strongest supporter years before the earthquake, Wyclef Jean, at yele.org or text "Yele" to 501501 to donate $5.

There are a great host of events going on in New York City to help aid the relief of the Haiti Earthquake. I hope to continue updating this list, as well.
