Thanks to readers of this li’l blog who don’t give a toss about hockey for bearing with me during my recent fangirlishness wrt the Carolina Hurricanes. Shortly after I finished watching the Canes’ lovely win over Boston (during which Matt Cullen scored a goal that I’m sure was just for me) on the big screen at the back of the Cats Cradle, the Junior Boys took the stage. A rapturous dance party followed. This was the third time they’ve been to NC and the third time I’ve seen them here. Rapturous dance parties, every one.

Other faves: “S. Soup”, “Homemade”, “Skull”.

perpetua:

Aside from Eric Gaffney’s generally bizarre contributions, the general tone of the band is defined by Lou Barlow and Jason Loewenstein’s obsession with writing whiny, often passive-aggressive songs about girls. Sometimes they rock out, other times they are soft and tender, but no matter what, they usually come off as the neediest, most high-maintenence boyfriends of all time. Luckily, the songs are mostly quite catchy and awesome, so it’s not too annoying, though it may be hard to take too many of them in a row unless you’re in a full-on beta male shame spiral.

We had awesome seats for game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals - right up against the glass. Sitting up that close in the charged environment of a playoff game was insane. (Unfortunately, what it’s like in there after they actually win such a game will still be left up to my imgination.) Rather suprisingly, the RBC Center allows dSLRs, so I got a bunch of photos — click through for the rest.

Went out to the Bowerbirds/Bright Young Things show last night. Show was great — BYT play a very enjoyable brand of soulful power-pop, and I expect they’ll be very buzzy once their record comes out. Bowerbirds played as a four-piece, with former Ticonderogan Wes adding some killer bass lines and BYT singer Matt adding some lovely drums. They played a bunch of new stuff, which sounded very good, and announced that they’ve got a new record out on July 7. Yay!

By the way, this was my first time at Slim’s, and it’s a miserably smoky, cramped place. Bleh.

This song has some really nice lines, especially the middle section, but I’m missing the melodic sense of some of their past work. I suppose that will ease a bit with familiarity, though the truth is that as band and fan we’ve grown apart a lot over the past 12 years. A little over a week ago I finally saw them live for the first time. The setting was not so intimate—an outdoor festival in dusty Florida—but I’ll take what I can get. I got a photo pass, and so got to watch the first three songs literally at their feet. It was of course a thrill to be so close, and a bit scary to be in the path of the flying feet of crowd-surfers with my back turned, but it also felt a bit vampirish to be aiming my camera up at them from that weird little trough in front of the rest of the crowd. After those first three songs I found a spot in the crowd, just off to the side in front, and shouted along with everyone else.

_________________________________________

Dear Ron MacLean. Dear Coach’s Corner.
I’m writing in order for someone to explain
to my niece the distinction between these
mandatory pre-game group rites of submission
and the rallies at Nuremburg.
Specifically the function the ritual serves
in conjunction with what everybody knows
is in the end a kid’s game.
I’m just appealing to your sense of fair play when I say
she’s puzzled by the incessant pressure for her
to not defy the collective will,
and yellow ribboned lapels,
as the soldiers inexplicably rappel
down from the arena rafters
(which, if not so insane, would be grounds for screaming laughter).

Dear Ron MacLean, I wouldn’t bother with these questions
if I didn’t sense some spiritual connection.
We may not be the same but it’s not like we’re from different planets:
we both love this game so much we can hardly fucking stand it.
Alberta-born and prairie-raised.
Seems like there ain’t a sheet of ice north of Fargo I ain’t played.
From Penhold to the Gatineau, every fond memory of childhood that I know
is somehow connected to the culture of this game. I can’t just let it go.

But I guess it comes down to what kind of world you want to live in,
and if diversity is disagreement, and disagreement is treason,
well don’t be surprised if we find ourselves reaping a strange and bitter fruit
that sad old man beside you
keeps feeding to young minds as virtue.
It takes a village to raise a child
but just a flag to raze the children
until they’re nothing more than ballast
for fulfilling a madman’s dream of a paradise
where complexity is reduced to black and white.
How do I protect her from this cult of death?

If you combine a converter box with a high definition TV set, you can view UNC-TV’s HD programming in spectacular high definition.” (emphasis mine)

I don’t get it. I have an HDTV. But I only get 3 of UNC-TV’s five channels, and UNC-HD is not one of them. I thought I understood this digital transition mess, but the quote seems to suggest that I need a converter box AND an HDTV to get all the channels? What’s more, I used to get the UNC-HD channel, but a little while ago it disappeared. WTF? I WANT TO WATCH THE LINGUISTS AND IT’S ONLY ON THE HD CHANNEL.

Everyone thinks that because I wear black lipstick I live for Halloween or something. It’s such an embarrassing holiday. They should call it Alter Ego Day—everyone dresses up as who they’d rather be instead of themselves. Sort of like what you said about people wanting out—or people wanting to be anything except what and who they are. I’d dress up as an ivory-billed woodpecker. Imagine everybody wondering if you existed, hoping you did, longing for a quick glance of you.”

-
Douglas Coupland, The Gum Thief, p. 17-18

DC’s newest is a nice twist on his classic style. I liked it, moreso than his last couple of novels. Sure, the characters all have that impossibly articulate tone about them, but it’s like a Wes Anderson film—it’s part of his style that, while a little bit BS, makes it his.

Last week I was on a cruise ship in the Caribbean, sailing with a handful of rock bands and a bunch of devoted fans of the Barenaked Ladies. They had invited the Mountain Goats (and the Weakerthans and Christine Fellows, yay!) to play their cruise, Ships & Dip V, and graciously extended the invitation (and free cruise fare) to spouses and significant others as well. It was a great time, and an invaluable opportunity to spend time with some of my favorite musicians and friends.

Came home to a 72 degree February day in NC, considerably warmer than the blustery day we spent on Key West. It’s been over 48 hours since I’ve been off the boat and I still feel like the ground is gently rocking beneath me.
