Hongkong - Macau Trip (5 days and 4 nights) For a Family of 3

Planning on an out of the country break this holiday season? Choosing which country to visit isn't a walk in the park especially if you're travelling on a budget. For us, we chose the one that was more economical although we considered paying Europe a visit. LoL. You might want to try our 5 days and 4 nights wedding anniversary escapade in Hongkong and Macau. I personally think we did the right choice because our daughter who is a super fan of Disney saw her favorite characters came to life.

First off, you can choose as to where to land between Hongkong and Macau. We opted to land in Macau as opposed to Hongkong for economic reason. If I recall correctly the flight from Bangkok to Macau and back, more or less a three hour journey, was a few thousand baht cheaper than the one going to Hongkong. I suggest to check which city offers a cheaper alternative.

We left Bangkok at a little past 3 pm and arrived in Macau at about half past 7 pm on 14th October. By the way, I want to warn you that the immigration in Macau is a little strict compared to Bangkok officers. When my 4-year-old daughter played around the lady officer's cubicle, she told my daughter to stop playing at once, showing a very strict face. The immigration didn't stamp our passports either. She simply scanned our passports to their system and gave us each a piece of paper that states as to when we can stay in their city. That paper should always be in your passport. If you lose it, um, well, good luck with that. Expect another reprimand from the immigration. LoL.

After we were cleared we asked the information on how to get to Hongkong. We were told that Macau has two ferry stations going to Hongkong and back. One is near the airport while the other one is about 20 minutes located on the other side of the island. We chose the one that is a litter farther so we can have a view of Macau at night.

You might ask as to why we didn't stay in Macau. We only used Macau as our point of entry because the ticket was cheaper. Also, we already booked our hotel for 2 nights at Rambler Oasis Hotel in Hongkong via booking.com prior to our departure. Another thing you have to consider is to have your money exchanged to Macau's currency called pataca and have some coins added to your arsenal. Buses running the city only accept coins which you need to drop in a piggy bank looking thing next to the driver. It is imperative to have the exact amount of fare because there is no change. We bought our ticket on the second floor of the station. The trip from Macau to Hongkong was about an hour. There were no big waves so it was really smooth.

OUR ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival

Flew from Phitsanulok to Bangkok via Nok Air on 14th October at 8 am.
Left Bangkok to Macau via Air Asia a little past 3 pm and arrived in Macau at about half past 7 pm (more or less three-hour journey).
Took the bus from the airport to Macau-Hongkong Ferry Station (15-20 minutes).
Sailed with Turbo Jet ferry from Macau and arrived in Hongkong after an hour.
Took a taxi from Hongkong's ferry station to our hotel.
Went to bed and snore.

Day 2: Disneyland

Woke up, prepared, and left via hotel bus to Disneyland at 9:30 am.
Arrived in Disneyland after 30 minutes.
Stayed the whole day, experienced the rides, and waited until the fireworks display at 8 pm.
Took the MTR from Disneyland Resort Line interchange at Sunny Bay Station to Tsing Yi Station
Took the public bus from Tsing Yi Station to our hotel.

Day 3: The Peak (Victoria Peak)

Checked out from our hotel and booked a guest house for a night in Kowloon Island.
Took pictures and enjoy the view of Hongkong's Victoria Harbor and the clock tower located near Tsim Sha Tsui Station.
Crossed Victoria Harbor aboard Star Ferry to Central Station in Hongkong Island.
Took bus number 15 from Central Station to The Peak, roughly 20 minutes.
Experienced Hongkong's 3D adventure before climbing the Sky Terrace for a full 360 view of Hongkong. Trust me, the view was breathtaking.
Took the tram back to downtown Hongkong Island and took bus number 15 to Central Station.
Crossed Victoria Harbor once again aboard Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui Station in Kowloon Island before heading back to the guest house which was just 15 minutes away.
Returned to Tsim Sha Tsui Station to see Hongkong Islands' iconic lights at night.

Day 4: Macau

Checked out from the guest house and walked about 15 minutes to Hongkong China Ferry Terminal (not too far).
Cruised via Cotai Strip to Macau.
A friend picked us up and took us to Hotel Man Va.
Had lunch at a Filipino resturant near Senado Square.
Then visit Senado Square and took picures of the area as well as the famous Saint Paul Ruins.
Took a free bus ride headed to Galaxy Macau and was mesmerized with its intricate architecture design as well as the magnificent Diamont Light Show.
Took another shuttle bus to the Venetian, one of Asia's luxurious casino hotel. If you want to experience the opulence of Venice, Italy in Asia - come and visit the Venetian.
We were also planning to see the dancing fountain at the Wynn Palace but it rained, so we took a time off and went to bed.

Day 5: Departure

Breakfast at the Filipino restaurant before checking out.
Took a taxi to Macau Airport, approximately 20 minutes.
Waited for boarding and off we flew back to Bangkok, Thailand.
Finally, flew from Bangkok to our home sweet home in Phitsanulok.

Personal thoughts

Whew! I can't believe we only spent a little over 50k baht for a family of three for a Hongkong- Macau getaway considering these two cities are expensive. We were also able to bring home 3 Disney shirts, 4 HK T-shirts and 3 Macau T-shirts as souvenirs as well as Disney toys for our 4-year-old daughter. I'm overwhelmed until today with the joy this trip brought us. This is our first family trip together in another country and certainly won't be the last.

Hotel Review: 4 Nights Stay at Aek-Pailyn River Kwai Hotel

The English camp we had three weeks ago brought me back to Kanchanaburi. Kan (as what locals call this province) is located in the west of Thailand. Its proximity to Bangkok (more or less 128 km) makes it an ideal place to see and experience nature at its best without being too far away from the capital.

During the course of the camp, 4 nights to be exact, Aek-Pailyn Hotel served as our temporary residence. Allow me to give more details of this hotel.

Aek-Pailyn River Kwai Hotel is located on the banks of Kwai Yai River. Its hotel facilities and amenities such as the large swimming pool near the river, restaurant shops, meeting and banquet rooms that can accommodate a large group of people, and the snooker table found next to the reception - are few things guests can enjoy whilst staying at the hotel for the best comfort and memorable experience.

The scenic natural surroundings like the mountains that seem to be touching hands with the sky, as well as the sound of birds greeting you first thing in the morning, are things you won't find in other hotels.

You can also relax around the nice landscape planted with different flowering plants near the river; read a book whilst sitting on the bench under the tree; or simply unwind at the music created by the beautiful splashing of Kwai Yai River down below.

The only downside in my opinion is when you book during the low season, you might end up having very limited food and with no alcohol. It is also possible that you might be their only guest which could be a little spooky.

Although our room looked a bit old, it was spacious and clean. I liked the place and would recommend it to anyone wishing to have a comfortable stay in Kanchanaburi.

How much per night?

We didn't pay anything since we were invited to facilitate the camp. Their website doesn't have any pricing either. But upon checking Agoda for November stay (fully booked in October), it was a little over 1,300 baht per night. Well, considering that this hotel is nice and comfy, that rate was actually a bargain.

How to get to Aek-Pailyn River Kwai Hotel

Aek-Pailyn River Kwai Hotel is located at 245 Moo 4, Ladya-Arawan Rd., Muang Kanchanaburi. It is about 151 kms from Bangkok or 31 kms from Kanchanaburi town hall.

Wat Rong Khun (White Temple): Creepy Images with Meanings

One of the most recognizable temples in Thailand is Wat Rung Khun or commonly known to tourists as "the White Temple." It attracts huge number of tourists both Thai and foreigners and considered to be one of Chiang Rai's most visited attractions.

Every detail of Wat Rong Khun carries deep religious symbolism that may shock even Buddhist followers, unless they've studied deeply the mysteries of Buddhism. The temple's color being white represents Lord Buddha's purity while the pieces of glass sparkling under the sun symbolize the Buddha's wisdom shining out across the earth and the universe; even the creepy statues and images outside have meanings as well.

History of Wat Rong Khun (White Temple)

Wat Rung Khun was built by Chiang Rai born visual artist Chalermchai Kositpipat as a center of learning and meditation and for people to gain benefit from the Buddhist teachings.

Before the end of the 20th century, the temple was in a very bad condition. Chalermchai Kositpipat decided to fund the project using his own money to have the temple restored to its former glory and make it more beautiful in the process.

In May 2014, a strong earthquake badly damaged the temple. Thanks to the support of international community who urged Chalermchai to not let the temple crumble. The artist answered the support by rebuilding some of the damaged areas.

Getting there

The White Temple is located more or less 14 km outside downtown Chiang Rai. Taxi is the most comfortable mode of transportation. The ride is about 20 minutes and cost between 250 to 300 baht.

Using a public bus isn't that difficult either. Busses from platform 7 and 8 leave from the old bus station close to the night bazaar in downtown Chiang Rai. Just simply inform the driver or the conductor to drop you off at Wat Rong Khun. The cost is 20 baht each way.

The White Temple opens daily from 8 am to 6 pm. There is no admission fee but donations are welcome.

Things to remember when visiting the White Temple

Despite the White Temple's unique appearance it's still a sacred place for worship among Thais. Therefore, dressing appropriately is encouraged. Avoid short skirts or shorts for women, and no tank tops for both genders. Refrain from touching sculptures as well.

You can take photos of the things in the temple grounds but doing so within the walls of the temple itself is forbidden.

Phuket Adventure Part 1 - Karon Viewpoint

The beginning of time

I've heard so much of Phuket, the "Land of Smiles" biggest island and one of the country's most famous tourist attractions before coming to Thailand seven years ago. With its picturesque view, Phuket was undoubtedly an eye-candy of travel magazines and travel websites at the time. Phuket was all over the news as well when it was hit by tsunami in 2004. But its economy was able to bounced back immediately and is now back to its former glory.

I've been to Phuket for the first time three years ago but never had the chance to explore the beauty of the island much. I was a part of my university's sports team aiming for the gold, so the purpose of seeing more of the island didn't transpire.

So, in July this year, the much-awaited long weekend, I took my wife and my daughter and we were joined by three of our friends in Phuket. Since we booked our flights a month before the scheduled trip via Nok Air, we got a very nice deal. It was about 1,500 baht only per pax from BKK to HKT and back. Our hotel was also nice and comfortable - paying only 1,600 baht for a three-bedroom suite for two nights. And of course, we all chipped in for the cost of our temporary abode.

Detailed Journey (Arriving in Phuket)

The trip from Bangkok to Phuket was nice albeit no cooperation from the weather. It was raining! If it didn't rain we probably had some nice photos of the view down below. Anyhow, we were picked up at Phuket International Airport by the van driver of Phuket Travel and Tours holding a sign that bore my wife's name. A little while later, we were in the van admiring the view of Phuket in the morning.

After our breakfast at a local restaurant by the road, we then headed to our hotel/condominium in Kamala to take an hour rest before the scheduled island hopping. I was impressed by the modernity and design of our accommodation even from afar. It looks elegant and classy, like the ones in movies where the rich antagonist reprimands his/her goons. I will make a dedicated post about our accommodation next time.

After admiring the beauty of our temporary abode and chose which room each of us will occupy, we rested for an hour and waited for the van for our Phuket city tour. We were so excited to see more of the island's beauty and take selfies. Haha.

Our first stop was Karon Viewpoint, the mot popular and most visited viewpoint in Phuket. Our driver told me that the name should be "Kata Viewpoint," but the sign by the road says Karon Viewpoint. Why is that? I did a little research and found out that Karon Viewpoint offers spectacular views of both Karon and Kata beaches on the south side of Phuket island.

Anyway, the place doesn't only offer nature's beauty as it has some stalls selling food, drinks and the like - dedicated for those people whose tummies aren't cooperating (talking about the lesser evil). Smirk.

And because there were people from different parts of the world, we heard different languages too. I heard Spanish, French, German, and of course Thai. There were also other languages I wasn't familiar with.

The view from the top was indeed stunning. If we were already impressed of its beauty despite the somewhat not clear sky brought by the rain, I reckon sunset here will absolutely take our breath away.

Vigan is now one of the New7Wonders Cities

The city of Vigan in the province of Ilocos Sur made the Philippines proud after its inclusion to the 7 New Wonders Cities by the New7Wonders organization alongside Beirut, Lebanon; Doha, Qatar; Durban, South Africa; Havana, Cuba; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and La Paz, Bolivia.

According to lonerzone.com: with more than 1,200 nominees from 220 different countries In October last year, the selection of the 28 Official Finalist Candidates was done by the Panel of Experts.

One year later, in October this year, the Top 14 cities were announced: Barcelona (Spain), Beirut (Lebanon), Chicago (United States), Doha (Qatar), Durban (South Africa), Havana (Cuba), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), La Paz (Bolivia), London (United Kingdom), Mexico City (Mexico), Perth (Australia), Quito (Ecuador), Reykjavic (Iceland) and Vigan (Philippines).

The 7 winners that was announced via You Tube today,December 8 were determined through voting.

Announcing the names of the New7Wonders Cities, Bernard Weber, Founder-President of New7Wonders, said: “I would like to thank everyone who have helped promote the New7Wonders Cities campaign since its inception in 2011. We began with more than 1,200 nominees from 220 different countries and here have 7 that represent the global diversity of urban society. The results announced this evening in Dubai are based on the counting of votes since the campaign ended at 7 am GMT this morning. They will now be checked, validated and independently verified. Note: If it happens that any of the cities announced this evening is not confirmed during the verification process, New7Wonders will issue a media update when this occurs.

Whole Page Exposure Of Palawan Island In New York Times Magazine (Travel Page)

A friend who goes by the name Enzo, the same person behind the travel blog TripZone, posted photos of Palawan on his blog.

According to him the paradise island particularly the Underground River or Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park got a whole page feature at the Travel page of New York Times Magazine, November 2 issue.

Recently, Palawan was ranked first at the international travel magazine Conde Nast Travel's 2014 Top Island In The World due to its long stretch of powdery-white sand beach, natural beauty and the abundance of animals and plants endemic only to the island.

And because I come from Palawan, I felt compelled of writing my own entry about this magnificent island full of great promises.

Phra Roung Hot Springs: Your Underwater Relaxation

"Unplanned travel taste better sometimes," said a friend after posting on her Facebook our photos taken in Kampheang Phet province on Friday last week.

True to her words the travel was literally unplanned. We were just having lunch together on Thursday at a friends' house who were travelling back to the Philippines when the subject of going out somewhere was mentioned. We joked about it and soon enough, our laughs enveloped the place. Little did I know that while I was thinking of it as a "joke," the other end, I meant my friends, were already printing the map to get to Kampheang Phet 's Phra Roung Hot Springs. Later that night, messages on Facebook started flooding.

Time of departure: 6 am. That was the original plan. Surprisingly, I was still unconvinced.

I was awaken by a call from Letty at about 6:10 am. "Kuya Alex is already here", she said. I was like, "OMG. We are really having a trip!"

"We'll be there in a jiffy," I just simply said. Much to our delight our daughter was not having her "pain in the brain" tantrums. Otherwise, it will take us forever to prepare and bear her loud shouts and long cry. We simply asked her to prepare her things, and off she went getting her milk bottles and diapers.

But instead of leaving at 6, we left Phitsanulok a little before 7. From Ban Khlong district, we turned left to Route 117 (Nakorn Sawan Road). We stopped for a while to buy some snacks at 7/11 near Naresuan University, and we immediately sped away.

Roughly 30 minutes or so, we arrived somewhere in Phichit. We then turned right to Route 115. Thanks to Kuya Ryan who informed us about the easiest way to get there. He said it's nearer as opposed to the way the local buses take - the Phitsanulok - Bang Rakam - Kamphaeng Phet route. It only took us a little less short of two hours.

Phra Roung Hot Springs according to Kuya Alex, was located a little far from the city. So when we arrived in the city center, we stopped in front of the gold shop to ask the shoplifter about the way. I'm sorry, I meant the shop owner. To our amazement though, she didn't know where it was. I thought the place was popular, how come she didn't know? "Let's go to the police station and ask the officers," Letty suggested.

But following the road sign that says "police station" seemed to be taking forever. So, we ended up asking the lady working at the computer shop near the clock tower whether she knew where the falls was. Viola! She knew where it was.

We were on the road for another 15 minutes before we finally saw the sign that says Phra Roung Hot Springs.

From the outside you will see chicken statues arranged nicely at the altar nearby. And because we didn't want to waste more time, Kuya Alex and I went straight to the reception. Unsurprisingly, Joy, Letty, Chang-Chang and Loureese were already having moments with the nicely trimmed garden. They were taking selfies like there's no tomorrow.

Anyway, the place reminded me of Burnham Park in Baguio, Philippines. They also have this mini lake similar to Baguio with swan and other cartoon character boats that you can rent for just 20 baht. You can use these boats indefinitely as long as you can stand the heat of the sun, and if you won't get tired of foot-paddling the thing. They also have this area where visitors can submerge their feet to the water while having a picnic at the side. It was so relaxing.

The area was dedicated for foot relaxing only. But since we want to bath and submerge our entire body under water, we rented a private hut.

The hut with a Jacuzzi inside was good for five people. It wasn't big but enough for us to walk freely and nicely without bumping at each other. There was this literal burning sensation the first time we descend below the surface. Of course, it was hot spring, you id**t! And because my entire self was having a moment with the hot water, my eyes were all but sleepy in minutes.

For the record, the five spots of the hot spring naturally took place from under the ground. The temperature is approximately 50-65°C. From a test of the Ministry of Public Health, there is neither contamination nor diseases, which are too harmful in accordance with the standard.

Once again, if you are looking for a place to relax and you chanced upon Kamphaeng Phet province, try Phra Roung Hot Springs. The area has a touch of nature with flowers of different colors along the path. They also offer a room for those who want to stay for a night. They have coffee shop on the side and a mini store next to it.

And the price? Only 60 baht for the hut and an additional 30 baht per person if you're gonna take a bath. Very cheap. It won't make your pocket sad.

Khao Khor, Petchabun: Winter's Getaway

Is it just me or are you also starting to feel the cool winter breeze in the morning? For the past few days, roughly 3-4 days now, I noticed that the mornings are becoming cooler. Just this morning I felt a little chill in the air while riding my bike to grab something for breakfast.

Since winter is coming I can't help myself not to think of our next destination. And to put a start for a winter related post, here's our Khao Khor adventure last year which I failed to tell.

Last year, we spent a really chilly evenings on the mountains of Khao Khor in Petchabun. It's a favorite, and I lost count of the times I've been there. But this place never ceases to amaze me. Just like a nectar to the bee, Khao Khor has its magic on me that always draw me close.

As expected upon arriving at the meeting place, everyone was wearing their own winter battle gears. We left Phitsanulok at about 6 or 7 in the morning aboard a nice van, and off we trailed the mountainous terrain of Petchabun province.

Our first stop was Route 12. This place was popular not just to the locals living in the area, but even to Thai and foreign tourists alike. From afar, Route 12 doesn't come short of the Wild West atmosphere we normally see in movies. There were old bikes (I'm guessing Harleys) parked outside. A petrol pump, and some ancient images of bands and famous personalities who ruled the 60's, 70's and 80's hanging on the walls. Being at the center of them brought me back to life when people talk face-to-face and not on the phone apps like Line and Viber. Seriously! And with a nice coffee in hand and a picturesque background, who wouldn't want to have a nice conversation?

After a few minutes admiring the view and taking photos in every angle here and there, we climbed Phra Tamak Khao Khor. It was built as a palace for the King on the occasion of His Royal Highness’s visit to royal initiative projects as well as residents of the area. The concrete building has 15 rooms overall, built in a semi-circle shape, a unique feature that makes it stand apart from other royal abodes. There were many pine trees surrounding the area, like the ones in Baguio, Philippines, and a bird's eye-view deck similar to Mines View Park found also in Baguio. Both places were quite similar in a lot of things. It felt like home away from home.

On our way down, the driver made a sudden turn. We found ourselves at the library surrounded with so many lovey flowers of different species, colors and sizes. I assure you that they're beauty cannot be ignored - and one won't leave the area without taking a selfie or two. In fact they made a perfect backdrop for a friend's primary photo on Facebook.

Were those flowers only grow during the winter or were they present all year round?

Anyway, we were so hungry so we told the driver to take us to the nearest restaurant to feed our hungry mouths. We didn't choose any fancy restaurant. The one along the street going to downtown Petchabun offered us not so special menus, but good enough to comfort us. We rested for a few more minutes and we hit the road again.

Final stop of the day was at Wat Phra Sorn Kae or Temple on a glass cliff. The temple's intricate design was as breathtaking as the nature behind it. It was covered with fantastic art full of life and vibrancy, and its walls were decorated with colorful mosaic theme as if they were in a different world.

Standing on its ground gave us a feeling of peacefulness and made us one with nature. But we got tired after a very long day. So when everyone felt the need to rest, we asked the driver to take us to our temporary residence.

We stayed at "I Love Khao Khor, a resort nesting a little farther from the center. The road going there was a little unpaved. Not a good sign if you think of paying it a visit during rainy season. But above all it was a nice resort, so to speak. And for a more adventure-backpacker feeling, we chose the tent over bungalows.

The sun at the time was still a little over the clouds. But the chilly atmosphere can already be felt, like a bee stinging my so sensitive flesh(sorry for lack of a better analogy).

Before sundown...

I've got 3 tops, jogging pants and thick winter gloves. However, they weren't so much of a help. The temperature at that time was somewhere below 10 degrees that even the whiskey we bought on the way to the resort lost its power of keeping us warm. We were shivering. And because we were on the mountain, there was nothing we could do. We just endured the coldness of the air touching our faces as it penetrated deeper into our system. After all, it was exactly what we're looking for.

Wanathara Health Resort and Spa - A Nature Lover's Paradise

Less than an hour drive away from the excitement of the city, a mere 46 km from downtown Phitsanulok, is a place settled on mountainous terrain of Wangthong called Wanathara Health Resort and Spa.

I chanced upon this stunning place when I was invited to join an English Camp a few years back. It was held there, and I couldn't be happier. And since I like nature, I fell in love with the place immediately. The tranquil mountainside environment before my eyes was so relaxing. It literally forced me to say a promise to come back whenever time and resources permit.

I was able to fulfill my promise as I set foot once again in this place last summer, when my mom and her twin sister celebrated their 60th birthday together. The lush vegetation enveloping the vast property was a sight so lovely everyone present at the party appreciated. Its fantastic landscape as well as the beautifully arranged flowers growing almost anywhere soothed away our tired mind and body.

Wanathara Health Resort and Spa boasts 40 bedrooms. They are all equipped with facilities found in bigger and more famous hotels downtown. Baan Suan Chezpom: Your Rice Field Citadel

It's been ages since the last time I updated this blog. I was preoccupied with so many stuff at school and my own personal affairs. By the way, have you noticed the changes in this blog? Its original title of "swirling cultures" was changed to "Land Drifter." The template design was changed, too. Why? Well, I just found the former title more appealing and the design a lot nicer.

To kickstart the drive for more travel posts, allow me to tell you what I know about Baan Suan Chezpom in Thung Saliam, Sukhothai.

I was invited as a trainer two years ago at a teachers' conference in Thung Saliam district in Sukhothai. We left Phitsanulok a little past 6 am and we arrived at Baan Suan Chepom after about two hours. The view was amazing, passing what seemed to be an endless greenery of rice fields on both sides of the road.

Upon arriving, my eyes feasted to the nicely decorated landscape and the cuteness of the bungalows before me. There weren't a lot, probably less than 10. And since I was told that we would stay there for three days I was like, "this is the place.Yahoo!"

We waited for the organizer and she arrived a little less than 10 minutes. Not much of a formality happened, just a simple "good morning" and a little talk with my Thai colleague and she was once again out of our sight.

The receptionist later reappeared out of nowhere and handed us both the keys. At first I thought me and my colleague will be staying together in one bungalow. But to my happiness, I was given my own key. I immediately got inside and savor the short moment alone in this amazing place. After a 15-minute rest, off we went to the conference.

Anyway, Baan Suan Chezpom is located 7 km from Wat Thungsaliam Luangpor-Sila. It offers bungalows with balcony about a stone's throw away from the rice fields. What do you expect in a little remote district? It offers free Wi-Fi but a bit slow at the time. Hoping it's now been fixed.

It is about 15 km from Chaoram Cave and features a shuttle service and meeting facilities. Free public parking is possible on site. Bungalows are fitted with air-conditioning, flat-screen cable TV and refrigerator. Shower facilities are included in an en suite bathroom. Guests can enjoy Thai food all day at the on-site restaurant. It looks so classy but do you know how much the room per night is? Just a mere 500 baht. It's comfy and elegant-looking yet won't hurt your pocket.

Si Satchanalai, the park I never knew existed

Sukothai is home to two historical parks originally built hundreds of years ago. This was new to me until I got an invitation from our department head to accompany the officials working at the excise department in downtown Phitsanulok, opposite the night bazaar. I've been to the famous one called Sukothai Historical Park located in downtown Sukothai many times in the past. Therefore, hearing my boss that there's another one in the district called Si Satchanalai got me even more excited.

We took the university bus and arrived at Si Satchanalai in a two hour trip. It could have been an hour and a few minutes had we not stopped somewhere to pick some of their friends up.

Si Satchanalai temples are more preserved-looking compared to the famous one in downtown Sukhothai. As you can see from the photos, they looked more like the Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The park doesn't have a wide land area as oppose to the one found in downtown where you need to have a bicycle to cover its entirety. But still, the temple designs (ancient) and the landscape (modern) of the park are amazing.

So if you have time, please do visit this place. It's a guaranteed time-travel.

Loboc River Cruise

Booking your reservation prior to your date of departure will save you a lot of trouble in finding cheap yet good accommodation. It can be arranged online or through a telephone call at the comfort of your home.

But then again visiting a place with no reservation or whatnot, sort of like a "walk-in" traveler (if there's such a word), is just as exciting. Imagine the soon-to-be experiences that you never thought possible happening right before eyes. Interesting, right? Especially if they are the things you wished to happen in the first place. That's the beauty of not knowing where to go and what to visit. I'm sure it may not appeal to some. But others out there had tried it, and probably plan to do it again.

Our trip to Bohol last summer was already booked prior to our arrival, but not the river cruise. So, after the tedious climb of the observation deck and triumphing its 214 steps just to see the grandiose beauty of the Chocolate Hills, it was time to relax aboard a floating restaurants.

I just learned that cruising Loboc River started in the 1980s. But hundreds of years prior to that, it was a source of life for its earlier inhabitants living along the banks.

Moving forward I can't exactly recall how long the cruise was but if my memory serves me well, it took about 20 minutes or so. There was a band serenading the tourists onboard sometimes singing their original compositions, and also covering songs that famous figures in the international and local scenes popularized. It was a feeling of euphoria and tranquility rolled into one listening to them - topped with the beauty of the banks covered with lush vegetation and coconut trees. T'was so relaxing.

Now who would forget the sumptuous Filipino delicacies, one of the reasons we decided to cruise the river in the first place? For four hundred pesos per head (300 for the food and 100 for the tourism fee) one will leave the place with a wide smile on his face. Promise!

Chocolate Hills - Bringing you happiness and memories

Long before the white sandy and beautiful beaches of the island of Bohol became famous locally and internationally, it was already (and is still) sitting majestically on the Philippine tourist map. In fact, the Philippine government has chosen the Chocolate Hills as one of its bellwether tourist destinations, and proposed for UNECSO to include it on its heritage list.

Chocolate Hills are dome-shaped geological formation with varying sizes from 30 meters to 50 meters, with the highest standing at 120 meters in height There are about more than a thousand hills scattered in the towns of Carmen, Batuan and Sagbayan.

As a child who really loved chocolate, I thought the hills were real chocolate and edible enough to be digested. I was then dreaming of Bohol as a perfect place for me to live in. But my teacher disappointed me when I learned that they weren't real chocolate but were actually grass-covered limestone.

Anyhow, the best time to visit Bohol to see the hills is during summer as the heat of the sun dries the grass up that covered them, making them look like chocolate. And to see thousands of them right before your eyes, try climbing the 214 steps of the observation deck. It's a lot of work, yes, but you'll see an almost 360-degree panorama of the chocolate surrounding. Once at the summit, there's none but beauty and serenity of the nature that stretches as far as your eyes can see.

Basílica Menor del Santo Niño: The Philippines' first

We stayed at Verbena Pension during the last three days of our stay in Cebu. Since we were just literally wasting our time inside the room, we opted to use what was left of it by visiting some famous attractions in the city. First stop: Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.

Unsure whether to take a taxi or a jeep, I asked the front desk's help. "Taxi would do just fine because the church isn't far from us", she said. But because we don't speak the language, I was a bit skeptic whether to really take a taxi since some of them are fond of ripping off their passengers with bunch of excuses just to get add-ons or whatnot, like what's happening in Metro Manila.

Anyway, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño or Basilica of the Holy Child is the Philippines' oldest Roman Catholic church built during the 16th century. You may wonder as to why it was named after the Holy Child. Well, it is believed that the place where the church stands was the same exact place the statue of Santo Niño de Cebu was found, an image of the Holy Child that Spanish explorer Jesus Miguel Lopez de Legazpi discovered in 1565.

When we arrived, we were greeted by women selling colorful candles and flowers. It was kinda awkward because I felt they were forcing us to buy their products as they literally blocked our way in. But we just ignored them and continue on our path.

There were some devotees, tourists, and who knows what else. The number was staggering knowing no mass was being served. And despite the occasional cries from babies and the loud voices of vendors, I must admit I like the feeling of being inside the Philippines' first. I felt being transported back to the time when "computer" was not a word yet, and a cell phone ring would cause one to rage war with others. Lol. Seriously though, it was a really nice feeling being inside.

We didn't stay long because it was in the middle of the day and our baby was having tantrums. So before we leave the place, we both recite a silent prayer and went on with our lives. And of course, we took pictures too.

Our close encounter of the Magellan's Cross in Cebu

As a child who once liked history and geography, the cross Magellan brought to Cebu fascinated me big time. Postcards and TV programs helped me in having not just a glimpse of the Magellan's cross, but more so, be able to understand some of its historical information.

I got the chance of seeing the cross up close and personal during my recent trip to the Philippines last summer. It was my first time in Cebu so I thought of at least not missing it out. The cross is located next to Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, the country's oldest Roman Catholic church founded in the 16th century.

And since some people tend to chip away or scrape its parts in their belief that it possesses miraculous powers, the original cross was encased inside the wooden cross for protection. You can read it from the description of the sign below the cross. There are also others who believe that it is just a replica of the original one. The "original", as what they believed had been destroyed or probably disappeared after the conqueror's death.

My wife told me that the chapel was opened for public during her last visit sometime in 2007. Unluckily for me, it was closed when we arrived. But I must admit that I'm glad nonetheless to take souvenir shots of one of Cebu's famous tourist attractions that fascinated my once young mind.

Cebu's Lechon is everywhere

Everything was properly planned with all trips supposed to be posted as soon as possible. Sadly, because of the not so good happenings, I decided to drop the idea of making a post. Worst yet, leave this blog to rot in oblivion. It was an option at the time to help me in moving on and to shut down from my system those things I don't wanna recall. However, there were some good things worth sharing as well ergo, including them to those that should be rotten is I think not a good move.

I won't drag you in the realm of chaos I experienced, nor divulge information not remembering from a certain individual who I will hide under the guise of Letty. I thought the bridge was totally burned down. Lol. Seriously, we're so back as friends and I'm just trying to annoy her. But if you happen to see this post Let, tell me if it annoyed you even for a bit. That will make me happy haha.

Anyhow while in Cebu to attend our friends' wedding, the very first thing I noticed upon arrival were the "lechon" vendors. Them being everywhere made me wonder whether they constitute a big portion of the Cebu populace. Wherever you go you'll see them. I even saw one inside the airport!

Talking about suckling pig (its English translation), my friends told me that Cebu's taste is one of the best in the country. And to try whether it was true or simply a legend, we stopped somewhere to have it served to us. Since my blood pressure is high which normally limits me to only have a slice or two, I wasn't able to enjoy much of what was left of it. The taste was good and all that but come on, how will I enjoy, right?

Comparing the taste of what I normally eat in Palawan anyway and to that of Cebu, I think my friends were right - Cebu's lechon was tasty and way cheaper too. And as I mentioned earlier about them being everywhere, don't be surprised because you'll see a peddler or two shouting "lechon, lechon" aboard a pedicab.

Cebu and Bohol, here we come!

A planned excursion or trip especially to a nice place always leave me with dreams after dreams of activities that I'm gonna do come the time of me being there already. And if it's like days before the trip transpire, the difficulty of putting myself to sleep starts to hit me. At the moment, I am into the dreaming thing. But I'm expecting things will get worst in the coming days as our date of departure draw close.

With so many great reviews online and first hand information and testimonies from local friends who live there not to mention friends who are going to join the club, I bet this upcoming trip of ours in the islands of Cebu and Bohol in April with a few days stop in my hometown of Palawan will absolutely make other people envious to death lol.

Kidding aside, I am indeed excited. In fact, I already bought a trolley luggage a week ago that can accommodate 40 kilos to 50 kilos, tops. This is kind of a really massive luggage for me and my wife including our 8th month old angel who will be travelling for the first time internationally. Despite its size we found it quite handy because we don't like the idea of carrying a few luggage here and there just because they're small.

Pinoy Christmas Abroad

This year is going to be my sixth Christmas celebration away from the Philippines. I never thought I'd be spending it longer than what I've originally planned of three or four years, tops. Why's that? Well, not that I don't like Christmas at home. In fact, it's more fun in the Philippines. Let's just call it work related thing because Thai people, who happen to be a follower of Buddha, don't celebrate the birth of Jesus. Therefore, December isn't a month of long holiday for us.

But it's just fine. Although Christmas is not Christmas when you are not with your family, Filipinos in Thailand and other parts of the world still celebrate it with burning love the way Filipinos in the Philippines do. Here, we normally get together, cook scrumptious foods for "noche buena", sing Christmas carols and exchange gifts, too, as if we are in the Philippines.

So two weeks ago just before we felt the cool breeze that reminded us of the big day, Joyie, my brother-in-law, me and of course my good friend/neighbour Mr. Cansix, decorated our lawn with blinking lights circling the plants and trees. A "parol" with a light inside hanging on the garage which my friend handcrafted, fits perfectly like the real star the wise men saw when Jesus was born.

The decoration is not yet done as we have plans of having our Christmas trees outside to make the lawn brighter, and also have the other trees covered with lights to make us feel we never really left home.

Know your rights as an airline passenger

Travelling within the Philippines is costlier than travelling within Thailand. In the former, you have to take planes to get to other islands with tickets that are way too expensive for some. If you are on a tight budget, you can take a boat or other form of transportation but it's very time consuming, of course. So for those who work overseas who plan on returning home either vacation or for good, plane is the only thing we can take.

But do we really know our rights as an airline passenger? I guess not. But don't worry. Be enlightened as rappler.com wrote six rights that we can exercise.

1. Offloaded baggage

If your checked-in baggage were offloaded from the flight you're in due to "operational, safety, or security reasons," the airline has to inform you ASAP, give you a report, and ensure that your offloaded baggage is carried in the next flight with available space.

The airline should deliver the baggage to you within an hour from the time the flight carrying your baggage arrives at your destination. The airline must pay you P2,000 for every 24 hours that your baggage is delayed. A fraction of a day shall be considered as one day.

2. Overbooked flights

An airline is allowed to overbook a flight -- an industry practice of selling more than the seats the aircraft has, based on demand-supply for a specific flight -- as long as the passengers who are bumped off do so voluntarily.

If you volunteer to choose a different flight, the airline will offer you compensation in the form of amenities or cash incentives.

If the number of volunteers is not enough to resolve the overbooking, the airline is mandated to increase the compensation package by adding more services until the required number of volunteers is met.

3. Airline promotions

All airlines have to outline their the limitations and restrictions in both English and Filipino.

When advertising promotions, along with disclosing refund and rebooking policies, baggage allowance policies, government taxes and surcharges, other mandatory fees and charges, the airlines also have to include the number of seats offered.

4. Check-in

If you arrive within the designated check-in area at least one hour before the flight's published time of departure, you will not be considered late and the carrier is obliged to make sure you are checked in within the deadline.

5. Flight cancellation

If your flight is cancelled, you have to be notified beforehand via public announcement or written notice such as through a text message.

If an air carrier cancels the flight because of force majeure, safety or security reasons the passenger shall have the right to be reimbursed for the full value of the fare.

6. Flight delays

In the case of delayed departures, airlines are required to provide free food, drinks, Internet access, phone use and, in extreme circumstances, hotel lodging until the flight departs.

Your flight is considered cancelled if it is delayed at least 6 hours after the original departure time. You have the right to be compensated accordingly.

There was an instance two years ago when we booked a flight with a certain airline to fly to Singapore. The booking was made months in advance because we would like to take advantage of bargain fares that require advance purchase. However, a few weeks before we take the plunge, I got an email from the airline telling me that our departure date was moved a day late. Since our trip was scheduled during the long holiday in Thailand, changing the date was unacceptable. We have work to do, HELLO! So I sent them a reply telling them to give our money back instead. They replied back telling me to either fly to Singapore and continue the trip as planned, or lose the value of the tickets since they were promo.

I phoned them and told two of their agents my story but I got the same responses as if I was reading all the messages they sent me. I immediately asked for a supervisor because the conversation was going nowhere.

When the supervisor was on the other end, I carefully chose my words and controlled my temper as I was pissed with the two previous agents. To my horror, she told me the same thing. "Refund cannot be processed because it's a promo." Since I had experienced working as a travel agent/customer service rep in one of the US leading online travel sites, I somewhat learned a thing or two about this situation. I told them that as a passenger I have the right to decline whatever changes were made on my ticket. I also added that it wasn't me who made the change nor even booked the dates wrong. But here's the line that changed the course of the conversation, "I know things about the airline because I was once on the same flight with you. Meaning, I was a supervisor, too"... And she believed it. I was refunded months after.

I've been hearing good things about Cebu especially from friends who hailed from the said city, dubbing it as the "Queen City of the South." I also heard from a Japanese friend that in Japan, Cebu is known as a place gifted with stunning beaches comparable to world's famous like Caribbean and Hawaii.

Sad to say, I haven't been there yet. I've been dying to really step foot on one of the Philippines historical and important city, that is Cebu. But I guess fate and yeah, resources, add to the list my fear of not knowing a single soul 10 years before, hindered me in paying it a visit.

But those worries were now things of the past as I am looking forward to see the city in the coming months. Thanks to a friend who invited us on her big day. At least it won't be a dream no more - come the time of the season when beach is the perfect place to relax and unwind. The itinerary has also been planed. I just wish she'll take us to the fantasy land lol.

The world and beyond @ Terminal 21

Every man dreams of travelling the world, see its beauty and explore different cultures of over a hundred countries across the globe. The thing is, only those who have the resources can do it without so much hassle. As for those who are having a tough time in making both ends meet, this dream is unlikely to happen and will probably remain a dream for the rest of their lives.

Call me a dreamer too because up until now I still dream of exploring the many spectacular places the earth has in store for everyone. But just like most of us, I am under the category of those "having a tough time." Still, I won't drop the idea of me chronicling my journeys from one place to another very SOON! Why's that? Because I somewhat experienced how was it to be in places I've been dreaming for so long, making me to really pursue harder for that to happen no matter what.

Really, no touch of kid fantasy in there. What seemed to me as a dream somewhat came true as if I was living the dream. I've been to Istanbul and then to Paris in less than 5 minutes. After that, I wandered at Carnaby Street in London whilst admiring their big red bus parked nearby, and checked Tokyo's souvenirs around a maze of shops. Every country was like a stone's throw away from the other.

This happened at one of Bangkok's shopping malls called Terminal 21, where several world-famous cities are under one roof. It resembles an airport with electronic display boards that make people think of flight information displays, and receptionists wearing flight attendants' uniforms.

Terminal 21 is like no other. It brings people to their desired destinations while also stopping in other delightful and lively cities the world is famous for. Second to none, I would say.

Nong Nooch Garden, Pattaya

If you're tired of searching for a place with great landscape, aviary, small zoo, orchid house, and cultural show rolled into one, then I guess you're about to take the rest you've been dying to have. Where exactly? I'm sure sure you've heard the city of Pattaya, but let me just clarify that we're not talking of night life and the happenings from dusk till dawn, alright? This blog is wholesome :)

Just to clear your mind from the dark side that is starting to eat your thoughts, I'm actually talking of a garden. Is something ringing a bell now? I hope so. If not, let me introduce to you this well-managed tropical garden in Pattaya, Thailand known as Noong Nuch. Aside from it holding the crown of the largest variety of orchids and other flora and fauna in the country, Noong Nuch is also one of Asia's largest and most beautiful gardens with 2.0 km2 land area.

So before my mom and my mother-in-law travelled back to the Philippines, we stopped for a few hours to have a taste of it. You know what? We liked it very much especially the elephant show where the giants happily played football, basketball, painting, and the like. It was fun watching them and let me wondered as to how they were trained. If you see that kind of show, would you leave the place without a smile on your face? If you say yes then I dare you to try it yourself.

El Nido (The land of great pleasure) Part 2

So what now after the six hours of roller coaster ride? Well, it's time for you to look for a place to stay if you haven't pre-booked your accommodation yet and you're in for an adventure. As for us, we have local friends around who looked for the most inexpensive rooms they can find.

I didn't have a photo of the room but it was made of interwoven splits of bamboo for walling (sawali). It was also cramped but it has a bed that can accommodate two people.

Let's talk about the island hopping, alright?

A friend of a friend gave us a number we can call to discuss about the island hopping adventure my friends were dying to experience. After talking to the boat owner by whom we handed the rent of P2,500 to hop six islands, we also gave a thousand pesos to the boatman for our food. After an hour, we went off to the beach with gears like life vest, goggles and the like.

The islands off the coast of El Nido are the ones that will blow you away. They are different, exotic and extremely beautiful compared to other beaches I have visited so far. Some have lagoons, limestone cliffs, and caves you won't believe exist. "Paradise" will simply be your brain's word of the day.

El Nido (The land of great pleasure) Part 1

While rummaging my stacks of photos I was surprised to see our El Nido trip a year ago. I cannot believe I haven't made a post about it yet and left it in oblivion for so long. A place such as this shouldn't be forgotten. How can I be so forgetful..

Some facts about El Nido.

El Nido is located in the northern part of Palawan, a first class municipality and managed resource protected area. It's no wonder CNNGo dubbed it as the best beach and island destination in the archipelago. In fact even Bourne Legacy star Rachel Weisz was wowed standing in the presence of great beauty during the filming of the movie.

We rented a van and left Puerto Princesa City in the morning with stops along the way for lunch, dinner and wash room - making the trip six hours, tops. The view along the way was superb especially during the morning as fishermen made themselves busy throwing nets onto the sea while the sun slowly rose from the horizon. It was a perfect backdrop so to speak.

The Barkadz

The trip was bumpy as hell you'll wish you never go (rough road and all that). But fear not! "Once there, you will forget all your exasperation and will simply be in awed of its beauty." That was the exact statement of our driver during my first visit a few months ago. True to his word, El Nido is a paradise. Nothing else comes close in my opinion.
