Landow's India Adventure

Final Thoughts from Home

2026-01-29T19:32:00.004-06:00

There's no place like home, and we made it there!

From the time we left our hotel in Kakinada, to the time we reached our door step, it was roughly 48 hours! I don't think I need to elaborate on how good it felt to sleep in our own beds that night! 🥰😴

I've shared a lot of my own personal thoughts about this trip, and how impactful I believe this ministry is for the beautiful people of Madhavapatnam India, now as I wrap up the blog for the 2026 adventure, I'd like to share some highlights from my fellow travelers. But first, I must say what a pleasure it was to be on this journey with them as they each brought something special to the experience. I learned from each of them things that will forever shape who I am, and for that I am grateful. 💖💖💖

Thoughts from Alan...

Returning to India was important for Alan for various reasons, the primary being the boys dorm. When Al traveled with us to Madhavapatnam in 2020, he was made aware of the tight quarters that the boys and girls shared, and Novahu's desire to create separate spaces for the children. Sharing this information with supporters back home, Al was very instrumental in helping make this dream a reality! Construction on the third level of the school was completed back in 2021, the boys have called this space "home" ever since. What a joy it was for Al to see first hand the "fruits of his passion"; his investment in these children's lives will have returns that will far exceed what can ever be counted!

And, of course, a trip to India with Alan wouldn't be complete without him breaking out into song at least once...

Thank you, Alan, for your commitment to Joyful Journeys and your help in caring for the wellbeing of the underprivileged kids in India!

Well done thy good and faithful servant!💗

Thoughts from Sophie...

Sophie has literally been an active part of this ministry since she was 5 years old, helping her sisters raise money to purchase sewing machines for the Joyful Journeys Cutting and Tailoring Centers. With her first trip to India at the age of 11, and this being her 6th trek over, she has truly been immersed in the culture and people of Madhavapatnam practically her whole life. Her desire to return is one as an ambassador of this ministry so that she can maintain the connections between supporters here in the U.S. and those affiliated with Joyful Journeys in the village, as well as to see the beloved people she's grown up with and meet the new family members.

Some of the highlights for Sophie were offering encouraging words and handing out Certificates of Completion to the women graduating from The Landowgals Fashion Technology Institute and feeling grateful to have been a part of getting this program up and running. She also was amazed as she walked through the Science Exhibition and listened to the students explain their various projects, in English. Communication certainly has gotten easier since the first trip over! And speaking of communication, simply being able to have conversations with the kids at the Marshall School was appreciated both by both parties!

And certainly a trip to India for Sophie wouldn't be complete without "Sophie Sweet Treats", playing games, and dancing with the hostel children!

Thank you, Sophie, for shining the Light of Love so brightly;

your presence was a gift to us all!💝

And now, words from Johanna...

Reflecting back on this trip to Madhavapatnam brings lots of different emotions for me.

JOY, that we got to see friends and family that we have not seen in many years, as well as meet new additions.

SADNESS, in that this was our first trip back without my dad and grieving his loss with our friends in India.

ACCOMPLISHMENT, to my fellow travelers and me...

we did it!

And, HOPEFULNESS, for the future of this ministry.

That being said, it has been 6 years since our last trip and things have definitely changed from the first time we went to this most recent trip. From a one room structure in the middle of nowhere, to a much larger expanding airport, we witnessed progress from the moment we got off the plane.

Roads connecting the villages to the bigger cities that were previously dirt, are slowly being transformed to paved highways.

The land behind the hostel that originally was nothing but peanut fields and mango trees, now shows how the village is growing with homes built of solid foundations and not just palm frond huts.

The view from on top of the Joyful Journeys Hostel looking over to the Marshall School used to consist of trees, now there are houses lining the road.

Obtaining water used to mean pumping from the well, now there are multiple water towers making that resource much more accessible.

Although open markets and shops on the streets are still everywhere, there now is also a 5 story shopping mall in the middle of Kakinada, the city where we stay during our visits.

Now, specifically the changes within Joyful Journeys are incredibly amazing too! From the first one room school house to a multi-level structure, the Marshall School is educating hundreds of students.

Recalling a time when some kids went hungry to now having our Lunch Bunch program to insure all the students are getting a hot meal during the day is such a great feeling!

Remembering back to earlier times when my sisters and I would knit scarves and sew bags to raise money to purchase sewing machines to get the Cutting and Tailoring program going, and now seeing the changes from treadle peddle machines to electric is exciting!

But for me, the biggest changes are the "friendships" that have grown into "family", I am grateful for them all.

As I wrap up my portion of this post, I can say even in the sadness, we could find joy in sharing memories of those who are not with us, and making fresh memories with the new family members that have been added along the way.

I'm so grateful to be part of such an amazing ministry that has been changing lives for the past 20 years! I don't know what the future holds for this ministry or myself, but I do know wherever life takes me I have forever been changed by what we have done and continue to do for our friends in Madhavapatnam, India.

~Jo 💜

Thank you, Jo, for your heart of kindness and your spirit of caring,

the emotion you shared within this post as well as what you brought to our trip was a blessing.

Shine Brite, Shine Far, Johanna! 💖

Final words from Jenny...

If you've made it this far, I'd like to say "thank you" for sticking with us, not only in reading this post, but in traveling along with us via this blog, it means a lot that you'd take the time to follow. 🥰

Now, my heartfelt prayer is that if what you've been reading has tugged at your heart even a bit, that you'll consider joining us on our joyful journey in helping those whose circumstances have made life much more challenging than you or I will ever experience. It is only by working together, the generosity of many, and keeping the spirit of love at the heart of what we are doing, will we be able to be the change we wish to see in this world. You never know, this may just be the change you need in your life as well, for when you do for others, what you get in return may surprise you. 💞

It's Never Easy...

2026-01-26T10:08:00.000-06:00

Today we begin our long journey back home.

🚌🛫🚙

Are we excited to see our loved ones, yes including our pups...

ABSOLUTELY!🥰

Are we looking forward to sleeping in our own beds...

WITHOUT A DOUBT!😴

Are we craving some of our favorite foods...

YOU BETCHA!🍔🍟🍕

Are we longing for familiar surroundings...

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!🏡

Yet, it's impossible to say good-bye without feeling like you're leaving part of your heart behind.😢

There's no way you can walk out the door and not forever be changed.💞

And, there's definitely no peace in a guarantee as to what the future holds, because we know we only have this moment...nothing in this life is promised. 🤔

So what do I take back with me?

This trip brought healing to broken hearts, as it gave us a chance to grieve the loss of our beloved Big Bob, with our Joyful Journey family in India. We needed this time to cry together as well as recall memories shared. His presence was truly felt by all who knew and loved him. 😭💝

This trip offered the powerful reaffirmation of the positive impact that Joyful Journeys has had in the village of Madhavapatnam, India over the past 20 years, and the countless lives that have been enriched by the programs available and the unconditional love shared! 💕

This trip was a stark reminder of the many things that we are privileged to have in our country, that we so often take for granted, and why we are called to help those less fortunate, to the best of our ability, regardless of _____ (you fill in the blank).

This trip reminded me, as I reminded the children, that we're stronger together than we are a part, because we are all connected...let's keep love in our hearts!

So with the power of love running in and around us, we venture onward...

Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart

2026-01-25T20:46:00.002-06:00

It's hard to believe, today is our last full day in the village! On one hand, it feels like we just got here, then on the other hand, I can't even remember everything we've done because we've covered so much over the past 10 days! But, what I do know is that this has been an amazing trip, and this is the day that the Lord has made, so I'm going to rejoice and give thanks in it!

My message today was basically "A time and a season; part 2", as I continued on from where I left off last Sunday, but focusing more on the difficult periods of life. And within those challenging times, how do we manage to still give thanks to God...not for the hard things but in them. We may not always be able to change our circumstances, but we can change how we respond to them. We can also choose how we support each other during those dark seasons.

Alan took this opportunity to share some of the history of Joyful Journeys and highlighted those who were instrumental in getting the India Ministry off the ground in the beginning.

He gave credit to Novahu, Pastor Jim Eckblad, & Terri Tybring

for being the visionaries who trusted to take this leap of faith.

I give thanks for their passion to be the change!

Following the service, Jo and Sophie handed out more of Oma's washcloths and soaps to some of the "Oldster" women. The "Oldsters" is a division of Joyful Journeys that offers aid, in the form of food, clothing, medical assistance, and love, to the elderly folks within the village.

I give thanks for those who have so little, yet give so much!

The afternoon was spent visiting different Joyful Journeys Board Member's homes. These dedicated people actively work at keeping things running smoothly on this end so that we can remain compliant with the international rules and regulations for this type of organization.

I give thanks for those who serve behind the scenes!

With just a little time at the end of the day, what better way to spend it than with some of the hostel kids.

I give thanks for these children, who set a great example of giving thanks in all things; after all, they are semi-orphans, living in a poverty stricken village, with little besides their basic necessities, and yet love and joy simply radiate from them!

Now, I’ll leave you with this…

With a grateful heart, I say,

20th Anniversary Celebration

2026-01-24T22:13:00.000-06:00

Our day of celebrations began with a chance to gather with the Joyful Journeys House Pastors. This group of roughly 30 men and women come from neighboring villages to attend the JJ Mobile Bible School, led by Novahu, where they study the Gospel, support and encourage one another, and return to serve within their respected communities. We're grateful for these individuals who are committed to shining God's love in the world!

Each pastor was presented with an honorarium and one of Oma's washcloths plus a bar of soap.

Since today was a special "belated" celebration for Joyful Journeys 20th Anniversary, a full meal was provided for all 300+ students. Alan, Jo, and Sophie had the opportunity to serve the children as they came through in shifts.

I'm sure they were glad they didn't have to clean up afterwards! 😧

With our India family's help in getting ready, it was now time to head over for the 20th Anniversary Program.

Upon entering the area, we weren't prepared for what happened next…

Once we caught our breath and made it onto the stage, we were each honored with garlands and shawls by various groups within Joyful Journeys.

Looking out at the crowd, it was incredible to see such great support, specifically from the Marshall School staff, students and parents.

We expressed our gratitude for the hospitality we've received since arriving. We thanked the teachers and staff for all their hard work, especially during COVID. We encouraged parents to continue to put importance on their children's education. And, we reminded students and adults, that just like the uniqueness in the traditional outfits they worn yesterday for the Fashion Show, we each are special in our own way. Yet, within our differences, we can still come together for good because...

"we are all connected"!

Then, in customary form, many of the students performed dances and skits for our entertainment. It was another "face hurting" day from all the smiling we did as we enjoyed watching each routine. From traditional and modern dances to a skit on the meaning of Christmas; each one captivated us as we celebrated the beauty of this culture.

Yet another wonderful day with so many reasons to give thanks for Joyful Journeys in India! 💖

Excitement on the Catwalk

2026-01-23T12:43:00.003-06:00

Our trusty drivers gave us a tour through the village on the backs of their motorcycles, and then we even ventured out onto the newly constructed road that connects Madhavapatnam to Kakinada. So much development and growth within this area, I still recall our first visit here in 2011 when all the roads dirt!

After we returned, the hostel children were excited to receive a "Sophie Sweet Treat" prior to lunch. It's truly a treat for us to see the smiles on their faces as they try different candies then what they're used to.

A couple days ago, I had posted about the Lunch Bunch and shared pictures of the kids enjoying a hot midday meal, today's picture shows what happens when they're done eating. Yes, they each clean-up after themselves! 😋

Now, with great anticipation, it was the moment everyone had been waiting for...the Fashion Show! Each child came in their traditional best, excited to strut their stuff down the makeshift Catwalk. Just as I mentioned yesterday about each of the 300+ students wanting to talk about their science project, today held the same energy as they each wanted their moment in the spotlight to showoff their outfits.

Now that we were wiped out from the 2 hour show, it was time to be pampered...

While Alan took a nap, Jo, Sophie and I were treated to henna! We were incredibly grateful for the gals who took the time to indulge us in this cherished custom!

As our busy day began to wind down, we had story time with the hostel children, along with singing and a quick game. I know giving sweet treats was probably not what we should have been doing when the kids were starting to settle down for bed, but we're only here for a few more days and we still have plenty of goodies to hand out! 😜

As the "young ones" and the "old ones" began to turn in for the night, the "middle ones" hung on for a little while longer so they could play some of their own games! 😀

Now, I have one final thought that I'd like to leave you with...

One of Big Bob's favorite lines, that would crack him up every time he said it to one of his daughters, was "Does your face hurt? Because it's killing me!"🤦

That phrase kept running through my mind today as my face truly did hurt from smiling so much! 😁

I can hear Big Bob laughing now as he always had so much fun interacting with the kids, and I believe he's smiling knowing our faces hurt too! 😂💝

Knowledge is Power!

2026-01-22T21:22:00.003-06:00

When we think about one of the primary intentions of Joyful Journeys Ministry in India, it is to empower the women and children in the impoverished area of Madhavapatnam and beyond by providing free education and teaching skills for a brighter future...

today, we celebrated their accomplishments!

First on the agenda, was to participate in handing out certificates of completion to the women who have recently finished the Cutting and Tailoring program at the Landowgals Fashion Institute. It was a humble honor to be a part of this ceremony that recognized the hard work and determination of these women, young and old, who have taken advantage of an opportunity to lift them out of their current circumstances. They were so proud of themselves, as they should be, as they received their diplomas, scissors, tape measures, and one of Oma's special washcloths!

Knowing that after 20 years, this program has offered literally hundreds, if not a thousand, women the stepping stones needed to cross over to a place in life where they can provide for themselves and their families in a dignified and prosperous way is a pretty amazing feeling! Thank you to everyone who has played a part in its success through the years, your support has changed lives for the better!!!

Shine Brite, Shine Far, women of India!💖

Following the program, there was a slight maintenance issue that needed to be tended to...a small King Cobra was found coiled up in a toilet in one of the boys bathrooms at the school! 😬

In the altered words from the Wizard of Oz... "Jo Jo, I don't think we're in West Bend anymore!"

It was then time to pause for lunch before the afternoon festivities began. We were graciously invited over to the home of dear family members who provided us with a delicious meal and good conversation!

Now, it was time for the 2026 Marshall School Science Expo!

I guarantee, words will fall short of what we experienced, but I'll try anyway...

Imagine going from classrooms to an assembly hall, filled with 300+ students, each wanting to tell you about their project, and I will add, patiently waiting for their turn! Each child explained, in English, everything from amoebas to agriculture, solar systems to electricity, anatomy to environment...

they covered EVERYTHING and in great detail!!!

As much as I wish I could share each presentation with you, so you too could be blown away by their vast knowledge, I have sorted through the 227 photo/video clips that were sent to me for your viewing pleasure! 😉

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind, that the quality of education that the children are receiving at the Marshall School, is preparing them for whatever path they choose to go on in their lives. I am incredibly grateful to Director Novahu, Principal Manjula, and the whole staff for their level of commitment in cultivating academic seeds into the tilled minds of these youthful "Shine Brites"! With the continued financial backing of Joyful Journeys supporters, the sky is the limit as to where they will go! 💗

In humble gratitude...

What a Day!!!

2026-01-21T14:33:00.002-06:00

After a long day, as I try and gather my thoughts for this Blog, I am grateful for all the pictures and videos taken over the past 12 hours, as I can barely recall everything we did without those reminders! However, as nice as it is, choosing which photos to use is almost as overwhelming as the fabric stores in India! 😧

So, here we go... Before heading to the Marshall School, we made a quick stop, and I use the term "quick" very loosely, to a local shop for a few miscellaneous treasures. You can tell by the look on Alan's face, this is the highlight of his day, or is it Sophie's! 😉😆

It was time for the afternoon meal by the time we arrived, so Jo and Sophie popped in on the Lunch Bunch kids to check that out. Currently, there are approximately 70 kids who attend our school who need assistance with nourishment as their families struggle with finances. It's incredible to think $15 a month can provide a child with a hot meal five days a week! What a difference a full belly can make when it comes to...well, pretty much anything!! I'm so grateful for the generosity of many who help make this program a success!

After lunch, we split up.... Jo and Sophie spent time with the older students teaching them how to braid Friendship Bracelets. They were pretty confident that the comradery outweighed the activity itself!

Meanwhile, Alan and I spent time reading to the younger students. We were both amazed at how they responded to the books and how well they were able to comprehend what we were saying.

Now for afternoon games... It's remarkable how much fun can be had with a ball and some stones!

The day closed out with a flare of music and laughter...

A perfect ending to a perfect day...smiles are worth one hundred words! 😀💗

Have “Chicken Dance”, Will Travel!

2026-01-20T20:13:00.003-06:00

Our day began with a stop at the nursing college where the Valluri's oldest daughter is currently teaching. She's enjoying using her degree in homeopathic medicine for both treating patients as well as educating young women starting off in the medical field. Shine Brite, Shine Far, Karishma! 💖

Next stop was back to the Marshall School where the students were all very excited to use their creative skills to make cards for the supporters back in the states. It blows me away to see how talented so many of the kids are when it comes to artistic abilities!

The days plans deviated a bit when we received a special invitation to go over to one of our female student's home to offer a blessing, as she had just reached puberty. It is customary for young girls to sit on a straw mat, when they hit this milestone, as well-wishers come and sprinkle rice on their heads. Alan certainly was a trooper when it came to participating within this ritual, as was the girl who received the blessing.

Our afternoon allowed for more time at the school as we continued handing out gifts to children who weren't present the day prior. We were so grateful for the staff who was helping us as several of them remembered receiving special gifts when they attended Marshall School.

And now, for some mid-day exercise… 🤣

Then some of the travelers received a gift as well...we got to take a power nap!!! It was wonderful!!!

School was done for the day, so it was time to load up the bus and take take the kiddos home. I'm going to let the following picture and videos explain that experience...

Upon our return to the JJ Hostel, we finally got to spend some time with the "orphans"! They were all excited to introduce themselves to us! They each got to pick out a Beanie Baby and enjoy a "Sophie Sweet Treat"!

Then it was time for games and dancing! One thing is for sure...although the children may change through the years, with new ones entering in as older ones move along, the level of energy and desire to be part of this "family" is consistent! They all are so happy to be in this loving, caring environment!

And there you have it, the universal song of fun!🐓💃🏻🕺🏽

I'm Happy to See YOU!!!

2026-01-19T20:45:00.006-06:00

It seems a bit strange that we've been in India for several days already, and yet today was our first interaction at the Marshall School. During the Pongal holiday, as I had mentioned, everything was shut down and now, in typical India fashion, everything is "slowly" getting back into the swing of things. School is back in session, although students trickle back at their leisure. Nevertheless, we were welcomed by those in attendance and enjoyed the opportunity to greet each child present.

Since our first trip back in 2011, I began greeting each class with visual welcome that they would respond with, although it's been 6 years since our last trip, some of the older students remembered it from their younger days, and the little ones were excited to learn it.

This is Sirisha, she is a former student of the Marshall School who graduated and went on to get her degree and is now a teacher at our school. She told me she remembered our visits through the years and recalled these same interactions with us while growing up! 💖

This is Ramesh, also is former student of the Marshall School and had lived in the Joyful Journeys Hostel. After going to college, he also came back to work at the school and hostel in various ways.💖

This is Vanith Sri, she is a recent graduate of the Marshall School and now works as our Remedial Teacher tutoring the Hostel Students in the evening. 💖

These precious "Shine Brites" stole our hearts! Who knows, maybe they'll return to work at the Marshall School someday! 💖

After greeting all the students, we presented them with the gifts that we brought with us (or were shipped by Lora 😉); they were excited to receive bracelets, jump ropes, tooth brushes and of course, sweet treats!

The teachers and additional staff were presented with Journals, pens, soaps and washcloths that were handknit by our very own "Oma". (FYI...Oma is 97 years old and made hundreds of washcloths for us to take and deliver, they were a much admired gift!)

After all the gifts were handed out, it was time for "Gym Class"! I must say, it actually felt good to join in on their warm-up stretches! 😁

At the end of the school day, we were invited over to a local villagers home for a cup of tea; today was the birthday of her recently deceased son. Both Hanna and Peter have been supporters of Joyful Journeys through the years. Hanna would love to see an Oldsters Home be constructed for her and other seasoned members of the community. 😍 After tea, she treated us, and members of the family, to dinner at subway in the mall. I'll share more of that experience at a later date.

There's so much more I'd love to share, but you'll just have to wait, as I'm wiped out for the day!

In gratitude for all who have supported and encouraged these children through the years, I guarantee your love is making a positive change in their lives and the well-being of their community and beyond!

Sunday ~ "Measures up" to our expectations!

2026-01-18T13:07:00.000-06:00

Today certainly didn't start off like our "typical Sunday"...

On our way to church we made a quick stop at a local tailoring shop to get measured for our new outfits. This concept still amazes me, as this is "the norm" for many women living in the village. It's also that reassurance that there is still great importance and value in what's being offered at The Landowgals Fashion & Technology Institute. Teaching women a trade, that enables them to financially support themselves and their families is at the heart of our Women's Upliftment Programs. This particular seamstress is the sole provider in her home as her husband left her to raise their two children on her own. She is currently battling cancer, but is able to work around her treatments thanks to the flexibility of having her own Cutting and Tailoring shop.

What a great way to start the day! 💖

After our fitting, we headed over to church, which typically starts around 9am, however today began more around 10:30am...yes, they were waiting for us.🤦Another concept that boggles my mind, no one is upset because it's not starting "on time", people just keep singing until they're ready to begin, and even then, we weren't the last ones there.😏

Not sure how well that would fly in our church back home!🤷😄

Sophie did a beautiful job of sharing her thoughts on being kind and generous; definitely a "step outside your comfort zone" for her! And I reflected on Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, a time and season for everything under the heavens. Looking back over the past 6 years since the last time we traveled to India and all that's transpired during that time...new life and loved ones passing, personal tragedies and triumphs, COVID, and a messed up world longing for better days, all tied in to... A time to be born and a time to die. A time to weep and a time to laugh. A time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing. A time for war and a time for peace.

Following the service, we had the humble opportunity to offer a blessing on those interested in receiving one; these intimate moments are simply about showing loving kindness to others...

basically what Sophie had just talked about. 💞

We were excited to see more of our Joyful Journey family as the day moved on, but first Johanna literally "carried on" a treasured tradition...

Oh, for the thrill of it...

And, now as the sun sets on another day, I give thanks for a time to be awake and a time to sleep.

This Feels Odd...

2026-01-17T20:49:00.000-06:00

Today marked the final day of Pongal, a four day Hindu Harvest Festival, during which time schools and businesses are closed, and EVERYBODY is out and about celebrating. The Valluris took this opportunity to take us around to some of the touristy places in the area to experience this part of the culture, but first, lunch with beloved family members!

The crazy part of it all was that everywhere we went, the local people were obsessed with us. Coming from a country where currently there is so much tension between cultures and different races, it felt odd to have people treating us like celebrities simply because the color of our skin. Having young and old alike approach you because they want their picture taken with you, or to shake your hand became overwhelming very quickly. It got to the point where Novahu joked and said if we start charging for "photo ops" we could raise money for Joyful Journeys! 😉📸 For those of you who know me, and know how passionate I am for what we are doing, the thought did have some initial appeal! 😎

But instead, we tried to carry on as best we could, smiling at everyone to show our appreciation for their welcomeness to us. Here are several photos from the places we stopped...

One of the activities include a ride in an old fishing boat, not OSHA approved I might add, but nevertheless a fun experience! 😁

Of course, a day out and about needs to include pictures from on the road...

And after a full day of being out and about, why not add some shopping in!

Talk about overwhelming, although Karishma kept reminding us "this is fun"! 😬

We wrapped it all up with a little taste of home...pizza at Domino's!

And this concludes today's festivities! I'm pooped and tomorrow is church...

Giving thanks for our India family and the friendliness of locals!

Good night. 💖

We Finally Made It!

2026-01-16T05:45:00.001-06:00

Our journey began on Wednesday at 3:30pm when our friend, Chris, picked us up to drive us down to O'Hare..."Thank you, Chris, for getting us to the airport safely and in a timely manner; our trip definitely started off on the right foot this time around!

Quickly, backing up a hair... Jo had Sophie and I pick an "inspirational card" before leaving, below is the one I randomly drew. 💖

Our flights went incredibly smooth, and we were all in agreement that British Air is our new favorite airline! In addition to everything going efficiently, we also got to celebrate Sophie's birthday. Poor kid though, with the drastic time change, she actually lost part of the her day. But, I suppose, how can you complain when you're sipping Champagne. 😉🥂

We finally arrived in Rajahmundry, India at roughly noon on Friday and were warmly greeted by old friends and new ones. I must say it was somewhat emotional as this was the first time seeing some of our "India family" since our beloved "Big Bob" passed. I've been holding on to those tears for several years now, just waiting for the opportunity to grieve with these loved ones...

another step on the healing journey. ❤️‍🩹

We then drove just over an hour into the village of Madhavapatnam, where we were welcomed by Joyful Journey Board Members and Marshall School Staff.

What a joy it was to see familiar faces after six years!

And now, dear friends, after 36 hours of traveling and a welcome celebration,

I NEED TO SLEEP!!!

My roommates are already passed out, and if I don't join them soon,

I can't guarantee what I'll end up writing in this blog!

Thanks for checking in on us!

India Trip - We’re giving it another try!

2026-01-13T18:16:00.002-06:00

Well, it's almost 7 months to the day, that a group of 8 of us were scheduled to leave for India...if you're not familiar with how that played out, take a moment to read my previous post. 😔

Here's to giving it another go...

This time around the number of travelers has been cut in half, which also means so has the amount of "stuff" we're able to carry over, but nevertheless, we're strong in spirit and ready to give it another go! (Our pups might feel otherwise, but they'll be in good hands! 💖🐶🐶💖)

A special "shout out" to previous fellow traveler Lora and her place of employment, HDI, for shipping some of the excess so it will be ready for us to distribute when we get there!

My travel companions for this trip will be my two daughters, Johanna and Sophie, along with our dear friend Alan. For Jo, Sophie and me, it will be our 6th trek over, for Alan, his second. It's funny though, even though we've been there numerous times before, it almost seems like our first trip since it's been six years since we were last there. Previously, when we were going every few years, we had gotten to know many of the students and hostel children, and enjoyed seeing how they changed with each new visit, however, many of the kids we knew back in 2020 have moved along in life, so essentially we're starting fresh. In regards to the family though, we are truly looking forward to reconnecting with loved ones and meeting new members! Oh, the excitement of it all! 💗

Our "joyful journey" will start on Wednesday afternoon and we are scheduled to reach our final destination midafternoon on Friday. With a trip of that caliber, we give thanks for audiobooks, mindless games, snacks, and the opportunity to catch up on sleep as it's been a long six months for us!! 😉

Thanks for checking in, and please, come again! Until next time...

2025 India Trip...Canceled

2025-06-19T12:47:00.001-05:00

Where do I begin...🤔

Interesting...this is how I started my last post announcing our upcoming trip to India,

now it's to tell you we're no longer going.

Yes, our 2025 trip to India...CANCELED. 😭

When you've invested as much time, energy, emotion, and money into something

as we have in preparation of this trip,

you know how it truly becomes a part of you...

You know how it is in your waking and sleeping...

You know how it consumes your thoughts and conversations...

You know how it can physically impact you...

And if you know all that,

then you understand the grief you experience when it doesn't happen.

This is where the 8 India Travelers are today,

we are not in a plane, or airport, or another county...

we are in mourning. 😞

It all started on Tuesday night.

We had all done our precheck-in, Boarding Passes were printed,

and we were all going to meet up at the park for an early birthday celebration for Jo.

Then the email came saying that our outbound flight from Chicago into Abu Dhabi

was delayed by 8 hours...obviously, this would hinder us from making all the following connections.

Well, after spending about 2 hours on the phone with a most delightful Etihad agent

we had new plans that would delay our trip by one day. Sure, it was disappointing, but it was actually going to give us a day to just breathe as these past few weeks had been a whirlwind of preparations.

This brings us to Wednesday. After a lowkey day, I headed to church to once again do the precheck-in and print out our new Boarding Passes and itinerary, then I was off to spend time with my grandson.

That's when the call came from Lora announcing the most recent email...

the new flight had been delayed again...by 19 hours.

As we all wondered "what's going on?!?!", more questions needed to be asked.

Was there something more to this than typical flight delays?

With all the changes, how much time would we actually have in India?

What if these delays happened on the way back?

As we all started searching for answers,

the pieces of this nightmare puzzle started to come together.

Abu Dhabi, where we'd fly into is just across the Persian Gulf from Iran.

With the looming threat of war, the air space in that region has been shut down.

Severe travel warnings have been issued for that area as well as heightened security levels for India.

Many flights were being disrupted and canceled because of this.

What if we get there and then can't get back as planned?

After prayerful consideration, heartfelt conversations, and input from loved ones,

it was decided the trip needed to be canceled.

So, here's what I'm wrestling with today, on top of my immense sadness...

I know this trip being canceled is a "first world problem"...

Sure, I'm heartbroken that we aren't going,

yet, I am safe in my home with no bombs dropping overhead.

We aren't canceling our trip because someone got sick, or a change of plans,

we are canceling because our world is a mess right now and

it would be dangerous for us to travel.

What's happening out there...how did things get so broken?!?!

God help us!!! 🙏

Now, although we aren't going to be there, the celebrations that were going to take place while visiting the village still need to happen, because it's bigger than the 8 of us travelers.

Joyful Journeys India Ministry is celebrating it's 20th Anniversary!

This is huge!!! Twenty years ago, this all started with a relationship; a relationship between two people who wanted to work together to bring good into this world. One person from Madhavapatnam and one person from West Bend...look how far we've come!!!

Look how many more of us have entered into this relationship!

This trip, like all the previous ones, was about building relationships,

because we all know, when we have healthy relationships, life is so much better!!

A celebration was planned to highlight those relationships and

the mountains this ministry has been able to move because of those relationships.

Relationships between graduated students and teachers.

Relationships between local officials and JJ leadership.

Relationships between casts and people of different religious traditions.

Relationships between Joyful Journeys and the community it serves.

And yes, relationships between us and them.

And although, the "us" won't be there, everyone else will be,

and that is the reason the celebration must go on!

The celebration also was to honor our beloved Big Bob

as we mourn his passing 3 years ago on June 25th.

This was going to be an opportunity for us to grieve with the people who had come to love him as he built beautiful relationships over the previous 5 trips over.

It was going to be a chance to recognize Bill and Terri Tybring, the first travelers to India,

who were very instrumental in the beginning stages of Joyful Journeys,

laying the foundation of international relationships for all future travelers.

And we can't forget Fred Seefeldt, Master Builder of Relationships.

Although he had never traveled to India, his unwavering support for the ministry

and his radical hospitality when our Indian family would visit was an unconditional gift.

And although, these faithful followers would not physically be there, they would be in spirit,

and that is the other reason the celebration must go on and will go on!

Now, here's the hard part...yes, the celebrations should and will go on,

but the new relationships that we were so looking to form will have to be put on hold.

Not being able to hug Karishma's daughter, my little namesake, Jennifer Noya,

after chatting with her over the past several months, makes me sad.

Not being able to meet Shekinah's new baby boy,

who surprised us with an early entrance into the world, makes me sad.

Not being able to meet the new spouses, who were recently married into the family,

makes me sad.

And, not having the opportunity to meet the new hostel children, makes me sad.

Then there's the established relationships that I longed to nurture.

Not being able to spend time with Novahu, Manjula, Karishma and Shekinah,

as well as their extended family, makes me sad.

Not being able to interact with the Marshall School students, makes me sad.

Not being able to catch up with some of the Marshall School graduates

to hear what they are doing with their lives, makes me sad.

Not being able to once again be submerged in the India culture, makes me sad.

Certainly, not being able to take in first hand the growth within Joyful Journeys Ministries,

makes me really sad.

Many tears were shed on both sides of the world when I called the Valluri's

to tell them we would not be coming as our relationship with them is like family.

But, like our loved ones here at home,

they agreed our safety and well-being is at the heart of this decision.

Grief wouldn't be so hard if there wasn't so much gratitude for what's been lost.

This trip may be over, before it even started,

but Joyful Journeys is moving forward and going strong!

Why, because the relationships that hold it together are solid and grounded

in the belief that together we can be the change we wish to see in the world!

Please keep all the travelers in your thoughts as they process this major let down,

as well as those who worked so hard in preparing for our visit. 😔

And...maybe even prayerfully consider how you might join us in this

Joyful Journeys relationship that is empowering people for good,

you might find it to be one of the most impactful relationships you've been in! 💗

Check out our web-site to the right for more info.

Well, until the next time, whenever that may be...

Namaste'

"the light in me, bows to the light in you"

such a beautiful word to acknowledge being in relationship with one another.

It is time...we're going back to India

2025-06-14T11:25:00.000-05:00

Where do I even begin... 🤔
So much has happened since our last trip to India in January 2020

it almost seems like a lifetime ago...
It was just a few short weeks following our return that the world shutdown due to the COVID pandemic and life as we knew it changed forever. Recognizing what we in the United States did to try and tame that beast was a stark comparison to what they were able, or should I say what they weren't able to do in the remote village of Madhavapatnam...it is absolutely heartbreaking the extent of the suffering and loss they experienced. However, within the darkness of the demon, Joyful Journeys was able to shine some light. Through the radical generosity of many, donations that were collected on our end were used to literally help keep this community alive! In addition to continuing to support the staff at the Marshall School while they did their best to keep educating the students with limited resources and new strict COVID regulations, with the backing of local officials, we were also able to provide food and medical assistance to people who had been shut off from the outside world.

Safer at home looks very different when your home doesn't have a pantry to draw from

or running water at your disposal.

We were so grateful for everyone, on both ends of the earth, who stepped up, worked together, and gave from the heart, even in the midst of their own COVID struggles, to help those less fortunate...

it's amazing what can be done when humans work together for good. 💗

On a more personal level, after surviving the challenges of the pandemic and a few other crises...

my beloved Big Bob died on June 25, 2022...just days after celebrating his 57th birthday...

no warning...no suffering...no good-bye...

no future to the life we dreamt of together for us and our family...💔

but also...

no unspoken words of love...

no regrets of our chosen path...

no question as to where his heart was...

no limit to the positive impact he rippled into this world...💕

Now, almost 3 years later, the Fruit of the Spirit that shaped who Big Bob was,

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,

and self-control (okay, self-control in some things, after all no one's perfect 😉),

is being passed on to the next generation of Landows. 💖

Forever in our hearts, love lives on...

Forever in our hearts, life carries on...

So much gratitude for the gift of Robert in my life...💝

So, this brings us to:

It is time...we're going back to India.

The thought of traveling back to India...for the first time without Big Bob...over his birth date and

the anniversary of his death...has been a lot to grapple with. 😢

Big Bob had a profound impact on this community which grew stronger with each of our 5 trips over. The lack of his physical presence throughout this upcoming trip will truly be felt by everyone.

Then, on top of that, my treasured friend, Bill Tybring, who was incredibly instrumental in setting the coarse for Joyful Journeys India in the beginning, and was one of the first travelers from here to venture into Madhavapatnam, died last week.

His commitment to helping empower both children and adults in the village,

by setting up computer technology in the school, was a gift that continues to this day.

Joyful Journeys in India wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for the initial passion of

Bill and the late Terri Tybring! Well done thy good and faithful servants. 👍

So, based on what I just shared, it's a good thing they don't make you pay extra

for any emotional baggage being carried on flights! 😏

Now, in spite of all that, I do believe I'm ready!

Thanks to my awesome travel companions,

the anticipation of observing the growth within Joyful Journeys since our last visit,

celebrating 20 years since it all began,

the excitement of meeting new JJ family members in person,

and seeing the changes within the village and touring the surrounding area,

I am beyond excited to return!

And, excited to share it all with you on this blog!

As leader of this trip, I'd like to introduce the rest of our group...

My daughters, Jo and Sophie will be embarking on their 6th trip over.

Other return travelers are Alan, who traveled with us in 2020

and Lora, who was on our first trip over in 2011.

First timers to India are mother and daughter, Amy and Madison,

and last, but not least, Brenda.

💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

Although it's just the 8 of us going, we're carrying the love and support of many

as we pack our suitcases full of homemade washcloths, jump ropes, bracelets,

Beanie Babies, books and of course sweet treats...among other goodies! 😍

Thank you for taking the time to get caught up with me;

I hope you'll continue to journey along with us as we head to India for a new adventure.

Until next time,

Namaste'

Absolutely, you can help!!

2020-02-03T19:15:00.000-06:00

I'm sitting in my warm comfy house, drinking a cup of hot tea, my beloved pups laying at my feet, and reflecting back over the last 2 weeks and trying to decide what to write at this point. There is so much information that I've tried to cram into this blog while we were in India and I truly pray that it has touched you in one form or another. I think about how I tried to capture the days events as I would write well into the wee hours of the night...and why I would do that. Of course one of the primary reasons was to keep our family, friends and supporters back home up on what we were doing, however my true prayer was to touch hearts and open eyes to the magnitude of this ministry in the hopes that it might drum up the much needed support to keep it going.

In a nutshell, Joyful Journeys is a 501c3 organization that is run out of Immanuel Church in West Bend. I rejoice in the fact that our congregation is full of generous individuals who give of their time, talents, and financial support to a ministry that most will never see in person, but trust and believe in the good that it is doing. But it's not just our church family who are committed to empowering the people of Madhavapatnam; three fourths of our pledged funding comes from Immanuel contributors, the other quarter comes from friends, our family members, and people who have simply heard of what we are doing and feel the desire to support it. When this ministry started 15 years ago, our monthly budget was $450, currently we send approx $9,000+ every month to cover things such as teacher and staff salaries, school supplies, hostel children needs, food for Lunch Bunch program, support for Oma's Oldsters, and fuel for the vehicles, just to name a few expenses. With the growth that has taken place over the years, we have recognized that we are to a point where in order to maintain the good works being done, WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Support can come in many different forms, the primary way is through our Student Sponsorship Program. A pledge of $20 per month / $240 per year will cover a students educational needs, including uniforms and teacher salaries, for a school year. When you commit to sponsoring a child, you are given a photo of one of our students; we can pick one for you or you can stop in at Immanuel Church and check out our India Wall and choose one for yourself. Below are a couple of the kids I sponsor...

I met this set of twins before they even started school; 💕

and have had the joy of watching them grow over the past couple years!

It was fun showing them the photos of us! 😊

At the risk of totally embarrassing myself, I will share this next picture for the good of the ministry. You see, sometimes you just feel a personal connection with a child...

Here I am showing him our pictures together. 😂 I can only imagine what must be going through his young mind!!

At least one of us cleaned up nicely with a haircut!

Currently we have 450 students in our school...many of them could still use a sponsor to support their education.

Our Lunch Bunch program feeds over 100 children a day whose families are unable to send them to school with food from home. For $10 per month / $120 per year, you could provide nourishment for a hungry child.

Oma's Oldsters provides support for basic needs to the elderly community within Madhavapatnam. $15 per month / $180 per year would help provide food, medicine and clothing to senior citizens in the village.

Our House Pastor program offers a stipend for individuals who spread the Gospel in local house churches. $35 per month offers financial assistance to these clergy.

Any dollar amount given to the general fund can help with expenses such as building and vehicle maintenance and repair. Or you can specify to a direct need like these donations...

Hot water heaters for the hostel

Sewing machine for the Cutting and Tailoring Center

A bus for the Marshall School

Computers for technological training

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read this blog, for faithfully following along on our travels, and for opening your mind to prayerfully consider how you can help our efforts in Madhavapatnam India.

p.s. Don't forget to join my fellow travelers and me on Sunday, February 16th at the 9:00am or 10:30am Worship Services; we will be sharing our reflections on our trip and Joyful Journeys Ministry.

Never gets any easier...

2020-02-01T09:08:00.000-06:00

Our last day in India began with our typical morning gathering; like every other morning we all came together to share our thoughts and have a short devotion led by Emma. (as in past trips, this truly has been a beautiful way for us to start our day) I started by asking my fellow travelers to give me their high and low point of the trip in a nutshell... Based on their responses, I believe I can sincerely say "mission accomplished"!! The time spent interacting with our JJM family, being with the hostel children, plus reading and doing art projects with the kids in Marshall School were all on the high point list; we came here to build relationships and I dare say we are all leaving with more love woven into our hearts!! The low points varied amongst the travelers, but nothing overshadowed the experience we had here.

Since our flight wasn't scheduled to leave until later that evening, our plan was to go back to the hostel and spend the afternoon with our JJM family and the hostel kids. We made a slight detour on our way there to pop in on a "Puberty Celebration"; yep, that's right, they celebrate a girl's "coming of age" with great fanfare here. Novahu and Manjula told me that families begin saving for this event as soon as they give birth to a daughter because it is such a grand occasion; after that, they save for her dowry. I can certainly believe that after what I saw... This was the sign outside her village welcoming the whole community to the event. This particular girl goes to the Marshall School, hence the reason we were invited to attend.

The rest of these pictures were taken in a communal area outside her house where we greeted her and offered a blessing to her by sprinkling rice on her head...

The family was incredibly grateful that we accepted their invitation to stop by...

Professional photographers are on hand to take pictures.

You can see by the size of the pots below that they are preparing to feed quite a large crowd; Novahu said that there are about 1,000 people in this village and they would all be invited.

Now onto the hostel for lunch and quality time. Although we had a delightful afternoon, there certainly was this dark cloud lurking over us all, as we knew what lied ahead.

It never ceases to amaze me how emotionally attached you can get to someone in such a short amount of time, like with the new little shine brites we just met this trip; they stole our hearts with their smiles and joyfulness! 😍And then there are the children who we have grown to love over the past several years...it's heart wrenching to think this is their final year in the hostel, then off into the world...will we ever see them again?? 😢 One girl in particular, Vijaya, has been there since our first trip over; it's been our privilege to watch her grow into a smart amazing young woman through the years...good gore, this is hard!! Pradeep, one young boy who I've gotten to know, along with his sister Deepika, have been with us for quite sometime now...when I told him I hoped he knew how much I loved him, he replied "I know auntie, I really do know, and I love you too".

Then came that dreaded time for us to say goodbye...it never gets any easier!! I'm sitting here crying now just thinking about how emotional that time is for both sides. As their tiny arms wrap around us with such strength, clinging on to you until you have to release them to move on to the next child, is a feeling like no other that I can describe. The only relief I can get is knowing that they are in good hands, and that the people who care for them on a daily basis love them like their own. What a gift the Joyful Journeys Hostel is to these children who come from lives filled with such brokenness and heartache. May God grant us all comfort and bring peace to our hearts as we move back into our daily routines, clinging to the memories and friendships we have made.

As I shared in one of my first posts, I had been reading the book Barnyard Dance to the kids as they joyfully danced with my fellow travelers...as we waved farewell, I changed the words at the end of the story to...With a OINK and a MOO and a QUACK QUACK QUACK, we're heading back to America buuuut WE'LL BE BACK!!!

Then it was time to say our "see ya laters" to our Indian family that has cared for us with such love and kindness throughout our trip; we were truly blessed by their hospitality, and will definitely miss them all as well...especially Rajini's tea!! 😉

So what do you do when your heart aches with the pains of change...eat chocolate cake, of course!!

After approximately 36 hours of traveling, we made it back home!!

We are weary, but filled with gratitude for our Joyful Journey, and we are happy to be back, but forever changed!

February 16th is India Sunday at Immanuel Church; join us at the 9:00am and/or 10:30am Worship Services as we share our experiences and shed light on how Joyful Journeys Ministries are impacting the village of Madhavapatnam and beyond. All are welcome! 💖

Watch for another post, as I still have more to say (I know, go figure), but for now it's time to rest!

Big Celebration Day...

2020-01-29T14:32:00.001-06:00

Today was our last full day in Madhavapatnam and that meant a day full of celebrations! It started with a special lunch for all the students from the Marshall School. Feeding 450 children within an hours time took a great deal of effort; the words I use to best describe that process would be "organized chaos"! But many hands kept things flowing, as they needed to eat in shifts, so eventually the children were all fed and sent home for the afternoon so the teachers could also enjoy the meal.

Everyone washed their hands before they ate.

It's amazing how patient these children are!

Grateful children!!

Students shoes left outside the dining area...it's amazing that they all find theirs when they're done.

Next crew of wait staff.

Jo and the head chef.

Marshall School teachers

During that time, Olivia, Shekinah and I worked on handing out the remaining goodies and getting the last of the pictures taken for the student sponsors. This has been a long process, one that we started at the beginning of our trip; hopefully we didn't miss anyone!

How would you like to wash these pots?!?

Following lunch we had time to rest and interact with the hostel children. We had picked up some henna and brought along cleansing face masks from home; what a great afternoon!

I was so tired and kept nodding off when this sweet little girl said to me, "it's okay auntie, you just take a sleep and I'll make your hands pretty". So I did. :)

While the girls had fun applying the henna, the boys were really helpful in cleaning the "paste" off.

Meanwhile, Jordan was being pampered in a different way...

Fun with photo chopping...

Johanna had sponsored Sasikanth while he attended Marshall School, through our numerous trips to India the two of them became good friends.

It was finally time to put on our new traditional outfits and go to the program. But of course not before we had a chance to take some photos.

As always, the final celebration is one of great excitement and emotion. Being honored as representatives of Joyful Journeys Ministry on behalf of Immanuel Church is always a very heartwarming experience. We recognize that there are many individuals who give generously in support of JJM and that only by working together can we make a positive difference. Thank you for your support!!

So I was just mentioning to some of the hostel girls yesterday how I never see the moon when I'm here, then tonight when Novahu was giving a brief synopsis of the ministry and remembering Terri Tybring for her initial work within the organization, I looked up and look what I saw... I do believe she was smiling down on the good works being done here!

As you will see below, we were each brought forward to receive a garland and shawl from a different group within JJM...

After I gave words of love and encouragement, incorporating the washcloths once again into my message, and Jordan gave words of thanks, we then heard from one of the Marshall School teachers, a couple of students and a Cutting and Tailoring student. It was truly amazing to hear how JJM has impacted their lives!!

Finally it was time for the dancing to begin...

All the kids are incredible dancers!!

After a long day it was time to say goodnight to our precious hostel children...

I've really enjoyed reconnecting with some of the hostel children who I've met on previous trips, plus getting to know the newer children; once again, they have embedded their love into my heart; it will certainly be sad to say good-bye tomorrow!

As always, I will go to sleep counting my blessings!

All you need is love...

2020-01-28T12:08:00.000-06:00

The Open Market was calling our name today, so we stepped out into the heart of Kakinada to stroll through the streets where the locals shop. The smells varied as much as the colors and sounds; bold and full of life! The other thing to note was this...I can understand the cheerful greetings when we walk through the village of Madhavapatnam because of our connection with Marshall School, but to be in the big city and still have people randomly smile and say Namaste' to us just goes to show how few white foreigners come to this area (we really stick out here) and how welcoming the locals are to them.

After a morning of marketing, it was time to take the beloved hostel children to the beach!! The travelers divided up into several different auto rickshaws and then the kids piled in!

The drive was bumpy, and filled with simple conversations, games and sightseeing.

The ride should only take about a half an hour, that is unless you get to the train tracks and find one standing still...then you can add another half hour to the trip. The good natured gals in my vehicle were excited to learn a new song while we waited; I'd say they did pretty well for only a few time running through John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt!

We finally made it!! You can imagine how excited everyone was to jump into the Bay of Bengal and cool off!

Okay, well maybe not everyone...

Whether in the water or on the sand, a good time was certainly had by all!!

The sun began to set; time to head back... What an amazing afternoon it's been spending time reveling in the outpouring of love and fun from our dear Indian family!!

Although most of us were beat after such a full day, there were still some diehards in the group that went back to the hostel for a bonfire and more dancing. Thank you Jo, Jordan, and Sophie for taking one for the team...I'm ready for bed!!

We brought Jiffy Pop Popcorn for the kids to try. It got a little burnt, but was still a hit!!

As we turn the corner and approach the final days of our time here in India, I'm beginning to sense that familiar emotion that I've experienced every other trip...the excitement of going home to my loved ones mixed with a heavy heart at leaving my Joyful Journeys family...I pray for my fellow travelers, especially the newbies who have no idea what lies ahead, that we can be in the moment, and rejoice in what we came here to do...LOVE!!!

Signing off and it's not even midnight yet (that's a first)!! Hallelujah!!

Namaste'

JOY...

2020-01-27T15:10:00.001-06:00

It's hard to describe the overwhelming fanfare we get when we walk into an area, everyone is just so happy to see us. To be welcomed with such love everyday is such an amazing way to start the morning! 👊😍

So, back when the women from the travelers group were buying fabric to make outfits, Al was picking out fabric to have a tablecloth made for his sister. Since it was a fairly simple project, Manjula said we could have the students in the Cutting and Tailoring Center stitch it. Today we got a sneak peek of the almost finished project, and boy did they do an amazing job!!

Right before we came to India, $250 was donated to buy a professional sewing machine with the hopes that someday the C&T students could sew the school children's uniforms; pictured below is that machine. Obviously, if we're ever going to get to that point, we'd need another couple machines, but for now it's doing the trick. The machine is now blessed and ready for business!!

Olivia has been sponsoring the same student since the beginning; today she had the opportunity to show her all the pictures she's saved of her through the years. It was a very touching moment on both sides.!

Basically, the rest of our day was spent with the hostel children...

We all fit on the new school bus, and headed to the forest for an afternoon of fun and exploring!

Through the years, it's always been such a great joy experiencing the excitment that fills the bus when we're all traveling together; loads of singing, dancing, game playing and basic chit-chat keep everyone preoccupied until we get to our destination.

Our outing today was to the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, where we would stroll through the forest on a raised boardwalk.

It's all fun and games until the monkey hisses at you!!

Auntie Joan brought magnifying glasses for the hostel kids; I don't know who enjoyed them more, the children or the adults showing them what to do.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!!

Once we returned to the hostile, we had time to do some art projects with the children ...

enjoy Sophie's Sweet Treats...

hand out fun shirts to our trusted "body guards"...

play with Pradeep's little guy...

and go for a spin down the road...

Then it was off to Yeti for dinner.... This has become a favorite tradition for the travelers through the years as we get to treat the hostel kids to a special meal and spend some quality time with them.

A great day was had by all!

The travelers are grateful for all who generously donated to the "travel fund" as it helped cover all the expenses for today and so much more!!

One body with many parts...

2020-01-26T11:31:00.000-06:00

We are a very eclectic group of travelers, each with unique and special gifts, but together we are one body. We have been blessed with the opportunity to come to India to build relationships behalf of all who faithfully support Joyful Journeys Ministries. It has certainly been a joy to me thus far to witness each person grow within this experience and today was no exception. Seeing everyone step outside their comfort zone, remembering that that looks different for each person, was especially prevalent throughout our full day of worship.

We began our day in Novahu's church in Madhavapatnam with singing, testimonies, scripture readings, communion, prayers and blessings. I reflected on 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 which compares the church body to the human body...if everyone were an eye, you'd never be able to hear, and if everyone were an ear how could you smell... So it is with our group, as well as their church family. No one person is more important than another nor are the gifts they offer better than the next persons; we are better together as a whole, than apart because then we are complete.

Following worship, a meal was served to "Oma's Oldsters", a ministry that provides assistance for basic needs to the elderly within that community. Individuals also received a washcloth knit by our very own "oldsters" along with a bar of soap.

After the Oldsters ate, the hostal children had their lunch.

In the afternoon, we drove to a church about 45 minutes away through bumpy back roads into a very remote village. (I almost got puked on as the little boy sitting by me got car sick). We were initially greeted with petals of flowers and cheerful smiles. It was decided to hold church outside opposed to in the palm frawn hut since there were too many of us to all fit inside, plus it was smokin' hot today! I must say, I've never been to a worship service before where fighting roosters raced through the congregation and a wild dog wandered in and fell asleep at our feet. Nevertheless, the Spirit was present and love filled the air!!

It's truly been non stop since we got here, so the travelers opted to call it an early night and headed back to the hotel for the remainder of the evening. We had our typical time of processing the days events, which is always so meaningful, then turned in...but not before a taste of home (or close to it)! And, they even deliver!! ;) Ahh, the little things...

There really is so much more I'd like to say each day as we see how Joyful Journeys is impacting so many, I can hardly believe how far this has all come in the last 15 years, but I hope these little snippets are at least giving you an idea for now.

To all our family back home, rest assure we are doing well, and rejoice in how your loved ones are "shining"; I am blessed to be a part of this body that has some pretty amazing parts!!

No Bag Saturday...

2020-01-25T13:43:00.000-06:00

Marshall School is open 6 days a week; morning assembly begins at 8:30, then classes let out at 4:30...with a schedule like that I'm sure you can understand why the kids love "No Bag Saturdays"! And what exactly does that mean?? On those designated days, the children leave their backpacks at home and enjoy doing things outside of the regular scheduled classes! On this particular day, our travelers planned to share their love of art with the students. But before I say anymore
about that, let me back up for a moment. Sophia works at ArtCycle in West Bend, over the past several months they raised money, by selling their catnip toys, and gave it to her so she could buy art supplies for the children at the school. She picked up a few things prior to leaving, but then had the opportunity to shop while she was here with the rest of the money.

Now, jumping back to today...the school was divided in half; Sophie had the younger kids, her helpers were Al, Emma, and Olivia. The plan was to teach them how to Zentangle, then let them use

the new water colors to paint their pictures.

We were absolutely amazed with the creativity in their designs; isn't it incredible what can be done when you are allowed to think outside the lines!!

Joan led the older kids in the art of Origami with special papers and instructions from home. Her helpers were Big Bob, Jan, and Kaitlin. Joan did an outstanding job explaining the techniques, and the kids had a fabulous time learning this new skill!!

Both projects required great patience, the Origami because of the meticulous folding patterns, and the Zentangle because of waiting for your turn to paint. But the children were great and excited to learn these new forms of art.

Now you're probably wondering about the rest of us; well, Jo was taking pictures of everything and Jordan got to spend time with Rajini preparing lunch.

So many creative things came out of "No Bag Saturday"!!

But wait, there's more!! The day is only half over!!

In the afternoon we attended the Graduation Celebration for 31 women who completed the Cutting and Tailoring course, 6 women who mastered basic computer training, and 9 men who had been training in the Mobile Bible Study. What a joy and honor it was to be able to present certificates to this dedicated group of individuals!! In addition to their completion paper, each person received a hand knit washcloth (thank you again Oma and Carolyn), and a bar of soap. The C&T students also received a sewing scissors and measuring tape.

Cutting and Tailoring Teachers

House Pastors

In the evening we had the chance to worship at one of the small house churches. Once again we were humbled by the outpouring of love we received as we walked through a very impoverished village, as well as in the church.

We pray the Holy Spirit will continue to work in and through us on this trip as we discover what Joyful Journeys is doing for the people of Madhavapatnam, and how it is impacting each one of us as individuals.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood...

2020-01-24T14:28:00.000-06:00

Today started off with gathering as many of the 450 students, from the Marshall School, that would fit in the front of the building for a photo; it was absolutely amazing how efficient the process was!! Not only are the children incredibly cooperative, which of course makes things that much easier, but the teachers and helpers just seem to work together like a well oiled machine.

The 2020 travelers and the Valluri family

We spent the remainder of the morning trying to wrap up handing out cards and such to the students who we didn't get to yesterday. It was fun because today's groups were the older classes so they remembered some of us from last time we were here.

The afternoon was set aside for touring the area and seeing where many of our students live. Although most reside in Madhavapatnam, there is a fair amount that travel from neighboring villages just to attend our school. One area in specific was a community set apart because of the lower cast families who live there. The last time we visited this place most of the people lived in palm frawn huts; I also remember it being one of the cleanest areas at that point because the folks living there didn't have the means to purchase items that came in packaging and simply lived off the land. Nine years later we found that the majority now lived in homes built with money the government had paid them when they bought out their farm fields to construct a new road. Now there was also more waste laying around too. I guess in a twisted way this means progress.

This boy is a student at our school; he hasn't been able to attend because of a broken foot. He requested a blessing from us for healing, and was grateful for the prayer.

Life is certainly not easy for the beautiful women of this area, and yet they proudly greeted us with smiles and kindness. The woman below is 60 years old; she is standing by our eldest travel companion Jan, who is 74.

We arrived back at the school just in time to see our new bus loaded up with students to take home; what an absolute blessing this recent gift was as they can now make one big loop dropping off students instead of coming back and forth to pick up another load.

At this point we had the opportunity to walk around the neighborhood where the school and hostel are located. We were greeted with great enthusiasm, in an almost bizarre way, as we walked up and down the streets. What started with just our group, quickly turned into a parade of children and adults alike; some wanting to shake our hands while others requested to have their pictures taken with us...all wanting to simply follow us. It's definitely a hard concept to wrestle with as we consider why so much attention is given to us.

Joan is in good hands with Manjula's sister Santhi

Dung patty for starting fires

This nomad and his beast entertained us in front of the hostile. He actually had trained the cow to shake and bow down to offer a namaste' greeting.

We ended out night by spending time getting to know the children in the hostel better; what a delightful group of Shine Brites!

Our group sure had fun interacting with the kids to the Barnyard Dance!

With a baa and a moo and a cock-a-doodle doo

everybody promenade two by two!

The next generation of Joyful Journeys leaders...

May God work in and through us to help us discern our call here

both in the ministry itself and the community it serves.

It started out with a feeling, which then grew into a hope...

2020-01-23T13:56:00.000-06:00

Today was another jam packed day, that started out with overwhelming emotion. You see, for my family, this journey started 15 years ago and although our involvement looks different than it did when my gals were all knitting scarves to raise money to buy sewing machines for impoverished women in India, our love and commitment is still strong. That being said, this morning we dedicated the new Landowgals Vocational Training Center, the building that we laid the cornerstone for (which has my families 6 thumb prints in), during our last visit in 2017. I was moved to tears at the thought of how far this ministry has come and how many women's lives have changed because of it...including my 4 "little women", which is why today was so bitter sweet. Of course we have missed not having my Olivia with us this time around, but not having her presence here today for this celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony was heart wrenching for me. I couldn't be prouder of each of my daughters for who they are and what they are doing with their lives, and I wish for them the same that I wish for all the women coming through our program...to learn a skill that will allow them to be self sufficient, to live their lives with dignity, and to simply be all they can be!! So to my firefighter/paramedic back home, who is doing exactly that, know you were with us in spirit today as we blessed this building and all who will benefit from it's services!! I love you! 😢💚💚💚🙇

The following are photos from the event which included dedicating the sewing and computer rooms at the Cutting & Tailoring Center and Technology Institute, as well as the newly moved Water Filtration Plant that is also a part of this building now.

Next on our "to do" list was to hand out greetings, washcloths, soap, and a sweet treat to all the students... What a great chance to meet each child individually. For some it was seeing how they've grown since our last visit, for others to share a hug from their sponsor, and then to see all the new smiles that are currently enrolled at the Marshall School. Crazy, but heartwarming!

This ministry wouldn't be what it is without the incredible generosity of all the people who support a child's education through our sponsorship program; below is a special wall designated to many of those individuals!!

Our afternoon was exceptionally special because the students put on a fashion show for us! Typically the kids wear uniforms to school, but today they were encouraged to wear their traditional outfits for the program. Mercy, what energy filled the hall that we gathered in as the music blared and the children all strut their stuff! Mind you, there are 450 kids in the school; here are just a few of them.

Karishma explained what some of the older girls were wearing and what region their outfits originated in.

Just as they were wrapping things up, some of us travelers joined in the show!

And before you know it, there was a dance party going on!

Take it away Jordan!! 😂

The dancing continued outside as we joined in a traditional stick dance...

Now, as if any one of these activities wasn't enough for one day, how about adding a water fight in with all the hostel children...

I think we'll all sleep well tonight...once we get there! 🙏😀💃💦😴

A day set aside for shopping...

2020-01-22T14:04:00.001-06:00

Today was all about shopping for special outfits and such for ourselves. Unlike some things that have changed since our first trip over, this definitely was as exhausting as it was back then, but equally as exciting...especially for the newcomers!

Novahu decided to start with the guys since that would probably not be as draining, and he was right, they found their outfits almost instantly!! And the biggest surprise was that Al, yes Al, got purple pants!!

The Grand Poobaa sat back and took it all in!! 😂

They also got fabric to have some custom work done; naturally the taylor met them in the street to take their measurements, because why not!?!

Next was our quest to find outfits for the women. I'd first like to say that all the guys were real troopers about patiently enduring this whole process, but Jordan actually took it to the next level by being the guy with the eye for the perfect fit and eagerly gave his 2 cents worth!

We looked at many different fabric selections and tried on different dresses before making our final selections.

Getting from store to store required either squeezing into the old school van...

Or braving the streets of Kakinada by crossing them at your own risk. ..

Midday, we took a much needed break to have lunch and rest up at the Valluri's home; they sure do take good care of us!! 💗

Upon heading back to the city, we made our final selections and then it was off to the tailor for our fittings. I'm not sure who had more fun shopping, Joan or Olivia; regardless, they'll both be sporting some beautiful Indian attire!!

It's amazing how these little shops are tucked away into the smallest nooks and crannies.

What a vulnerable process, but we're sure it will be worth it when we can wear our beautiful attire!

Across the alleyway was man embroidering by hand...

After a few more stops, it was time to head back to the hotel for the night; I was thrilled to get a turn riding on the back of Manjula's nephew, Sasikanth's, motorcycle! It's a whole different experience going from inside the safety of a vehicle to putting yourself out there in the mix!!

motorcycle ride in Kakinada

What an adventure!!
