(For those who aren't familiar, he's the first openly gay player in a major professional sport. He announced his sexual preference last week.) Chris Broussard, a longtime NBA analyst, said how he believes homosexuality is sin (along with other sins like sex before marriage, etc). Christians rallied to his side because he had the courage to say these things on ESPN thus putting his job in jeopardy. ESPN is also part of one of the most politically correct TV organizations in history.

Not surprising, a lot of people also took issue with his stance. Apparently, this includes the Breakfast Club crew at 105.1FM. They asked him on the show to talk about his beliefs, and the result... well... it's pretty amazing. Broussard goes on their show and gives a great apologetic for what he believes including Scripture and a discussion on the application of ceremonial laws. The crew, trying to trap him a few times, are left uncharacteristically speechless. That is... speechless until Broussard is off the phone. That's when "DJ Envy" decides it's safe for him to voice his opinion. A cowardly move, yes, but it's a typical response and familiar to anyone who has ever moderated comments for a Christian video on Youtube. The comment section of the video is interesting, too, though I wouldn't recommend reading it because some of it is pretty disgusting. The summary: There is very colorful language, but most of the people there are criticizing DJ Envy for taking a swipe at Broussard after the phone call ended and not dealing with what he said. We live in an amusing age. See below for the full interview.

These days, I use it more as an outlet to keep fit and spend time with friends than something I take very seriously (as seriously as I did when I was a... say... "full-of-myself, look-at-me" early 20 something?), but it will always have a special place in my heart. My wife has the same love for it. In fact, that's how we met. She played at Clemson University for her first two years. I was friends with her teammates before I met her. They would ask me to come scrimmage with them in the gym, and one day, Susan, coming off an injury, hobbled up and introduced herself. The bond was made. She transferred to play for the Gators, and I went to law school in California where we had a "Skype Relationship" for about two years. The rest, as they say, is history.

I play in a lot of leagues here in Orange County, CA. At one point, I was playing in four a week until I realized how expensive Icy Hot and Advil can get. One of the leagues was a LA Fitness league. I made friends with the manager of the league a few years back, and we won a couple championships so he asked me if I'd like to be in a commercial they are shooting to endorse the league. I said, "Fa sho." (Just like that.) (Ok, maybe not.)

Here's the commercial:

Subsequently, because of being in this commercial, they asked me if I'd like to participate in their "Make Your Best Shot 2013" Contest they have each year. Given, I'm 33 now. I'm not as young as I used to be, I show how much I enjoy a good buffet a little more than I used to, and the date they wanted to do this was almost immediately after the California State Bar Exam. In fact, the session (where they had me do like 15-20 dunks in all) was the first physical activity after I had done since the 18-21 hour, 3 day state bar exam. I had been outside of physical activity for about two weeks. So I was like, "Free shoes? Ok."

The video below is the one selected. The contest runs until April 8th, and it is entirely based upon views. The winner gets really good tickets to the Clippers game on April 16th (Susan's and my first anniversary is on April 6th, and her birthday is on April 15th. Yeah... I have thought about that...). The most views wins the contest! So while I normally don't care about views on Youtube videos on the LaneCh channel, I'm making an exception for this one. Here's the video, and all it takes is a view! Currently, I'm about 17 views behind the lead! Thanks!

This is commendable resolving, but what will come of it? You will break your resolutions, and be nothing bettered by your attempts at reform. I expect that if you go into the business of mending yourself, you will be like the man who had an old gun, and took it to the gunsmith, and the gunsmith said, "Well, this would make a very good gun if it had a new stock, and a new lock, and a new barrel." So you would make a very good man by mending, if you had a new heart, and new life, and were made new all over, so that there was not a bit of the old stuff left. It will be easier, a great deal, depend upon it, even for God to make you new, than to mend you; for the fact is that "the carnal mind is enmity against God," and is not reconciled to God, neither, indeed, can be; so that mending will not answer; you must be made anew. "Ye must be born again." What is wanted is that you should be made a new creature in Christ Jesus. You must be dead and buried with Christ, and risen again in him; and then all will be well, for he will have made all things new. I pray God to bless these feeble words of mine for the helping of some of his chosen out of the darkness of their fears."

Someone asked the following question recently. I asked him if I could repost here for people who might be wondering which tablet or e-reader device they should get this Christmas. This is a follow-up to my post from 2009.

Hey Lane,

OK, this is a long shot. But I came across a blog post you wrote in 2009 explaining your jump to an eReader (how much you liked it, all the free books you had gotten - it seems like you said one of these was the ESV study Bible, etc.). Well, I'm wanting to get an eReader also, but the subject line of this email "Confusion" describes how much in the dark I am. I've done some research, and without even seeing one in person I like what I read about the Kindle Paperwhite and another one called the Kobo Glo . Both of these are are mainly exclusively eReaders. Then you've got all the other stuff out there that have more capabilities (Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, iPad, etc, etc). Anyway, if you have any thoughts it would be gratefully appreciated.

God Bless You

Larry

My reply:

Hi Larry,

The question now as opposed to 2009 is whether to get a Kindle or Nexus 7. To me, it comes down to what you are going to use it for. The Nexus 7 is basically a bigger smartphone without the ability to make calls and can only connect via wifi (though there is a newer version coming out with 3G capability). The screen is harder to read than a traditional Kindle because it is an LCD screen. It’s definitely not a bad choice, though. You can do just about everything you can on an Android phone. If you just read books, though, I would go with the Kindle Paperwhite. It’s the easiest to read, get books on via Amazon, and it is the most popular. The interesting thing, though, is that with either you can read books via your Amazon purchases. The Nexus 7 has a Kindle app that allows you to read the books you buy via Amazon. In my opinion, it is between the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Paperwhite. Kindle if you just want to read books, Nexus 7 if reading books is a secondary issue to checking email, watching videos, reading websites, etc. Hope this helps!

Blessings,
Lane

As a caveat, I would recommend the Nexus 7 over the Kindle Fire HD, but that's only because I prefer to have a stripped down version of Android. If you aren't very computer savvy, you may actually prefer the Kindle Fire HD's interface. It's arguably easier to use because of the bigger buttons and labels. Another note is that the Kindle Fire line is the only of the Android products that include the Amazon Video app so if you like to watch videos via Amazon Prime, this may be the deal breaker for you. If you find all these tablets too small, you can go for the Nexus 10 which is basically a Nexus 7 with a 10 inch screen instead of a 7 inch.

I started watching it right before bed and had to finish it before I fell asleep. Here's the back story:

The man in the video, Jeremy Hiltz, was a pretty vocal advocate of Pelagianism a few years ago. I'm not talking about those who go to Seeker-Sensitive churches and basically believe Pelagian doctrine even though they don't know Pelagius from the second Adam (literally). I'm talking about a person who strictly adhered to Moral Government Theology, was a Finney fan, and classified himself as a Pelagian. Needless to say, he made a few comments on my Youtube vids from time to time. I don't remember him being as belligerent as the Skelly and Morrell types, but I do remember thinking about blocking him several times. That's what makes this video so interesting... and an admonishment to me. You see, I learned from watching this that I might be too quick to write people off when they don't see things the way I do right away. I was ready to write Jeremy off years ago and pretty much did minus blocking him on Youtube. But the Lord's ways and timing are greater than mine, His creature. So, with this video, my edification, Jeremy's acceptance of the Doctrines of Grace, etc, all praise goes to Him for the great and wonderful things He does. He does more than we can even think.

Now, the video:

Quick to Speak, Slow to Listen?

One of the instructions from James is to be "quick to listen, slow to speak." (James 1:19) This is a trait I have been trying to become better at during the last few years. One of the main things you learn quickly when talking to a Judge is to, first, listen what he has to say, and, only after that, respond when you have all the facts. It has helped me immensely not only in the profession I'm entering but also in my relationships with others. Sadly, there are those who do not always abide by James's words, though, and the following can occur.

Recently, a person accused me of defending antinomianism and New Calvinism... twice. The first time can be found in these series of sequential Tweets:

1. RT @LaneChaplin: Dear legalist, Christ fulfilled the law so we don't have to. Sincerely, The Bible / Christ obeyed so you don't have to??? ( link )

2. If you think Christ obeyed so now you don't have to, you haven't understood grace, nor the Law of God. ( link )

3. Thanks to new Calvinists, the doctrinal enemy of our day is once again....antinomianism. ( link )

4. Christ fulfilling the law never means our dismissing the duty and desire to obey. John 14:15 ( link )

5. "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." John 14:15 @OldRuggedCruz ( link )

6. If you don't love Jesus, call everyone born again and who does keep His commandments a legalist. John 14:15 ( link )

7. & 8. (Two replies to @OldRuggedCruz)

9. @LaneChaplin Lane, do you believe obedience to the imperatives of Scripture have no place in the Christian life because of grace? Curious. ( link )

Now, I don't like to usually say this because it's so prejudicial instead of informational, but here I will make an exception: Any reasonable person can see...

...That, in the context of these Tweets, the person Tweeting was trying to convey that I'm a New Calvinist and adhere to a form of antinomianism. This was said within the context of debating whether "Christ obeyed so you don't have to..." etc, etc, etc. (Keep in mind this is all because I said, "Christ fulfilled the law so we don't have to." I'm not sure how one could have a problem with this statement unless they believe that we have to fulfill the law because Christ didn't. But I digress.) When I read these statements in context, it became pretty apparent to me that he was accusing me of these things because of my initial Tweet and only looking to clarify after the 8 or so Tweets in between.

So there was the one instance. Here's the next: Lane Chaplin Defending Antinomianism and New Calvinism?

This second instance came about when he realized I unfollowed him on Twitter then explained why I unfollowed him. He then took my explanation as a defense of antinomianism and New Calvinism instead of me showing my disdain that he accused me of being such. I know, boggles the mind.

But, anyway, let me say unequivocally that antinomianism is a damnable heresy. Telling someone they can keep on sinning because they're saved is not just bad doctrine, it leads to hell. Also, New Calvinism is error. Though it's still a little sketchy as to what exactly it is, most people associate it with a form of Calvinism that borrows heavily from personal revelation (and sometimes a denial of limited atonement) a la Mark Driscoll and crew. I do not believe either of these are Christian ideas. For that matter, even if I did, I would completely contradict everything I've put on my blog and Youtube channel for the past five plus years... and, according to this individual, I would have decided to "come clean" to all of that in a single Tweet reply to someone on Twitter! Boggling.

Now with that said, I unfollowed the individual in question, but it was not just because of this situation. This is the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. After hearing repeatedly that John MacArthur isn't saved ( link ), James White is a fraidy-cat ( one | two ), Shai Linne is a blasphemer ( link ), Phil Johnson is a cherry picker ( link ) etc, etc, etc, and now this, I'm not sure if there was much value in following him anymore. The reasoning reads like a DUI: It weaves all over the place trying to make the case to others "sharing the road" that the driver is pulling it off when, in reality, he's not.

In summary, this post wasn't made to bash this individual. It was made to: 1. Defend myself yet again against ridiculous accusations and 2. Show what happens when we are more set upon pegging someone with a charge than we are hearing them out. The Bible says to be "quick to listen, slow to speak." (James 1:19) This individual seems to understand this verse in the reverse.

The Elephant Room (No Co Ever: Episode 1)

Here's the long awaited video with Dr. James White, Phil Johnson, Carl Trueman, and Mike Abendroth discussing James MacDonald's controversial "Elephant Room."
When we study God's Word, the law, or anything for that matter, we should keep this in mind: No one knows everything except God. Even the most decorated Bible teacher will not know an assortment of facts like who wrote a certain book or what page certain information is on. We must start with this premise or studying will become a frustrating, fruitless endeavor: Only God is omniscient. No man will ever know everything there is. Ever.

If we can't learn everything, why use our time to learn anything? The way you answer this question will either result in your study being a benefit or a burden. The goal of studying should never be perfection. If you start with the premise that God is the only one who knows everything, you will have to agree that perfection is unattainable for any man. If the goal of our studying is something that is impossible, we will always come to study with discouragement, frustration, and hopelessness. I say this from experience. For a long time, whether I realized it or not, I tried to study in the sense of a perfectionist, and I always had these feelings as well. It made me want to procrastinate when I needed to study. Who wants to willingly submit themselves to a practice that will make them discouraged, frustrated, and hopeless every time they decide to do it? If you can decide to avoid these feelings, it doesn't make much sense to willingly submit yourself to these emotions. But as we said earlier, perfection is not attainable for any man, and, therefore, should not be the goal of studying.

So what, then, is the goal of studying? Increase. Increasing our knowledge and understanding should be our goal at all times when studying. Focusing on increase allows us to walk away from every session meeting a goal and provides a sense of constant accomplishment. Feelings of guilt because of procrastination eventually subside. If you study, and your goal is to know more than you did before you started, then your goal is met, and you are not discouraged, frustrated, and hopeless. Constantly striving for increase is the mark of a good student. Constantly striving for perfection is the mark of a discouraged (and I would argue, disillusioned) student.

When we go to study God's Word, let's always approach it looking for an increase of knowledge and understanding and not expect it to be perfect in this life. It will keep us coming back to learn more and more, and our procrastination from doing the things we know we should do will become less and less.

In summary,

Perfection as the Goal
    - Unattainable
    - Frustrating
    - Causes Constant Feelings of Guilt
    - Causes Discouragement
    - Causes Procrastination

Increase as the Goal
    - Attainable Every Session
    - Provides a Sense of Accomplishment
    - Guilt Free
    - Procrastination Subsides
    - Learning Increases as a Result<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/LanesBlog/~4/T1LoydyEKr0" height="1"
