Let’s journey to Japan to learn about Takoyaki. Takoyaki, also known as octopus balls, is often featured at street festivals, fairs, and sporting events in Japan, where it is enjoyed as a popular street food.

History and Cultural Significance

Takoyaki debuted in Osaka, Japan, in the 1930s. It started as a simple dish made with wheat flour batter and diced octopus, cooked in specially designed molds. As economic conditions improved in post-war Japan, Takoyaki gained popularity in street food markets as a quick, tasty, and affordable snack that met the needs of the busy post-war population. Today, it is widely regarded as a culinary symbol of Osaka culture.

What Is Takoyaki?

Traditional takoyaki is prepared from a batter of wheat flour, dashi (a type of broth), and diced or minced octopus (tako), along with green onions, pickled ginger, and tempura scraps (tenkasu). It is typically served hot, drizzled with takoyaki sauce, and topped with katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) and aonori (dried seaweed flakes).

Takoyaki is made in a takoyaki grill, or “takoyaki-ki,” a specialized cast-iron pan with domed molds that give the balls their unique round shape. It is central to the cooking method and helps create takoyaki’s crispy exterior and soft interior.

Let’s Learn about Japan and the Japanese Language

Japan is a curved island nation (archipelago) located in East Asia, in the northwest Pacific Ocean. It is east of the Korean Peninsula, China, and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. As an archipelago, it consists of more than 14,000 islands (due to updated mapping in 2023), with four main islands: Hokkaido, Honshu (the largest and home to Tokyo), Shikoku, and Kyushu.

Dense forests and mountainous terrain cover 70 percent of Japan, including the Japanese Alps. The country also has many active volcanoes, with Mt. Fuji being the most famous. Major cities are along the coastlines and in flat areas. Japan’s climate ranges from a humid continental climate in the north to a humid subtropical climate in the southern islands.

Japanese is spoken by nearly the entire population of Japan, totaling around 125 million speakers worldwide. Besides Standard Japanese, called Nihongo, there are lesser-known Ryukyuan languages spoken in Okinawa and the nearby Ryukyu Islands. Japanese uses three writing systems: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Today, Japanese is written left-to-right, but vertical writing is still used in literature and traditional media.

We last caught up with Lex as he enjoyed the Christmas Market in Nuremberg, Germany. Lex’s next stop on his world tour is Milan, Italy, as the 2026 Winter Olympic Games are about to begin! Follow along as Lex learns about the Italian language, Italian books, and what makes Milan so unique.

Milan, Italy

Milan, located in Northern Italy, is the capital of the Lombardy region. The city lies with the Alps to the north and the Po River to its south, and it is more than a 6-hour drive from Rome. It is a significant economic, fashion, and cultural center with a population of approximately 1.4 million. 

What Language Do They Speak?

Italian is the official language of Italy and is spoken by the majority of the population. Interestingly, it only gained official status following Italy’s unification in 1861. Approximately 85 million people worldwide speak Italian.

Italian is a Romance language derived from Latin. The Italian alphabet consists of 21 letters and does not include j, k, w, x, or y.  While numerous regional dialects exist, standard Italian is primarily rooted in the Tuscan dialect, which gained prominence through renowned Italian authors like Dante Alighieri.

Italian is a highly expressive language, with hand gestures being a deeply ingrained part of the language.

Italian serves as the universal language of classical music, as many essential terms such as crescendo, adagio, and maestro originate from the Italian language.

Fun Facts

Here are some fascinating facts about Milan:

Milan is home to the Duomo di Milano. This Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete, from 1386 to 1965. It is one of the world’s largest cathedrals and a symbol of Milan.

The city is considered Italy’s financial hub, hosting the country’s stock exchange and many major companies, making it the most prosperous city in Italy.

Milan is also one of the world’s fashion capitals, hosting Milan Fashion Week every year.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper” is located in the Santa Maria delle Grazie Church, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city is also home to La Scala, one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses.

Milan is famous for panettone, a popular Christmas dessert that was first made in Milan, as well as the tradition of aperitivo, which involves pre-dinner drinks and snacks.

Milan and the Winter Olympics

The 2026 Winter Olympics, officially known as Milano Cortina 2026, will take place in Italy from February 6 to 22, with approximately 2,900 athletes expected to compete from around the world. The games will be jointly hosted by Milan and the Alpine resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo, with additional events held across various locations in Northern Italy. Milan will host the opening ceremonies and several winter sports, including figure skating and ice hockey. Cortina d’Ampezzo will host major skiing and alpine events. The closing ceremony will take place at the historic Arena di Verona in Verona, a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater.

Ski Mountaineering (Skimo) will debut at this year’s Olympic Games, with three events: a men’s sprint, a women’s sprint, and a mixed-gender relay. This new sport combines uphill climbing (booting) and downhill skiing on a mountain course.

The 2026 Olympic Games will mark the 3rd time Italy has hosted the Winter Olympics and the 4th time it has held the Olympic Games in total. The 1956 Olympics were the last time Cortina d’Ampezzo hosted the Games.

We last caught up with Lex as he enjoyed Paris, France, and the Summer Olympics. The next stop on Lex’s world tour finds him exploring the Christmas Market in Nuremberg and reading German books. Nuremberg, Germany

Nuremberg is located in South-Western Germany in the state of Bavaria, specifically in the Franconia region. Home to more than 500,000 people, it is the second largest city in Bavaria, and the 14th largest city in Germany. Located on the Pegnitz River and the Rhine-Maine-Danube canal, it is about 379 kilometers (235 miles) southwest of Berlin, Germany’s capital city.

What Language Do They Speak?

German is the official language of Germany and is spoken by most of the population. Nuremberg is home to the Franconian dialect, specifically East Franconian, which combines features of Central and Upper German and is known for its fluid, rounded sound and the softening of certain consonants. 

German is also an official language of Austria and Liechtenstein, as well as being an official language of Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.

Fun Facts

Here are some fascinating facts about Nuremberg:

• Nuremberg is home to one of the oldest and most well-known Christmas markets in the world (see more below).  
• The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg, Nürnberger Burg, is considered one of the most important medieval imperial palaces in Europe. It sits atop a sandstone ridge overlooking the historic center of the city. 
• Nuremberg’s old town is well-preserved, featuring half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and historic landmarks, including the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche), the Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain), and more.
• The city hosts the Nuremberg International Toy Fair, held every year since 1950, and it is the largest trade fair for toys and games. It is also home to the Toy Museum, which is regarded as one of the most well-known toy museums in the world.
• Nuremberg is famous for its culinary delights, such as its sausages (Nürnberger Rostbratwurst) and gingerbread (Lebkuchen).
• Albrecht Dürer, one of Germany’s most important Renaissance artists, was born in Nuremberg. He is best known for his paintings, drawings, and printmaking.

The Christmas Market in Nuremberg

The Nuremberg Christmas Market, Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt, dates back to the mid-16th century and attracts roughly two million visitors annually.

Held in the Hauptmarkt, the main square of Nuremberg’s old town, the market features 180 wooden stalls with red and white awnings filled with traditional Christmas decorations and sweet treats. There is a special Children’s Christmas Market, called “Kinderweihnacht,” next to the main market, offering special children’s programs and rides.  

The Nuremberg Christkind, also known as the Christ Child, is depicted by a local woman dressed in white and gold with curly blond hair, serving as the official symbol of the Christmas Market. She kicks off the market on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent with a traditional prologue delivered from the balcony of Frauenkirche Church. The Christmas Market ends on Christmas Eve.

Let’s journey to Guatemala to learn about one of its most famous national dishes, Pepián. Pepián is a hearty, flavorful stew that beautifully combines the country’s Mayan and Spanish influences into a tasty dish. It typically includes roasted spices, seeds, and vegetables, and often features chicken, pork, or beef. 

Pepián dates back to the pre-Columbian era and is closely tied to the culinary heritage of the ancient Maya civilization. Over time, it has developed by combining native ingredients and cooking methods with those brought by Spanish colonizers. 

Pepián is commonly regarded as a symbol of Guatemalan identity. It holds a key place in significant celebrations such as weddings, birthdays, and festivals, acting as a centerpiece for community gatherings. In Guatemalan culture, sharing Pepián demonstrates hospitality and warmth. 

Let’s Cook

Guatemalan Pepián usually features chicken, beef, or pork, along with tomatoes, tomatillos, onions, garlic, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, dried chilies, cinnamon, and spices such as cloves, allspice, and coriander. Other ingredients might include cilantro, potatoes, carrots, green beans, and chayote.

Let’s Learn about Guatemala

Guatemala is in Central America and borders Mexico to the north and west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, Honduras to the southeast, and El Salvador to the south. It features mountainous terrain, with the Sierra Madre mountain range running through it. The climate is tropical, but it can differ significantly between regions because of its varied elevations. Coastal areas are typically hot and humid, while the highlands are cooler with a more temperate climate.

Guatemala is recognized as the heartland of the ancient Maya civilization. Cities like Tikal and Quiriguá are UNESCO World Heritage Sites that highlight the impressive architectural, astronomical, and artistic accomplishments of the Maya.

Spanish is Guatemala’s official language, but the country also has over 20 indigenous languages, such as K’iche’, Q’eqchi’, and Mam. Around 40% of people speak an indigenous language, reflecting Guatemala’s diverse cultural heritage.

The thumb piano, originating in Africa, is known for its captivating sound, distinctive design, and portability. This instrument exists in many varieties and is known by different names. It belongs to the lamellophone family, which produces sound through vibrating tines attached to a soundboard. Deeply embedded in African culture, it holds significant cultural and spiritual importance. The recognition of mbira music by UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage highlights its cultural significance.

History

The thumb piano can be traced back over 3,000 years and is found in various cultures across Africa, Europe, and beyond. It is a percussion instrument with metal tines (keys) mounted on a resonator, traditionally made from a hollowed-out piece of wood or a gourd. The instrument is played by plucking the tines with the thumbs, giving it its name. 

Also Known As

“Thumb piano” is an informal term commonly used in English, but the thumb piano is also known by a variety of names across Africa and in modern music. Each variation may differ in the number of keys and tuning style. They include:

Mbira: From the Shona language of Zimbabwe, Mbira is widely used and recognized as the original and culturally significant name for the instrument. It has a double row of keys and features a non-Western scale.

Kalimba: Popularized in the mid-20th century by Hugh Tracey, this smaller version often refers to a modern or Westernized version of the thumb piano.

Karimba: Played in Uganda and other parts of Central Africa, the Karimba has a double row of keys with 17 notes and is African-tuned. The term Karimba is often used to refer to a family of closely related instruments, including the Mbira Nyunga Nyunga, which has a double row of keys with 15 notes.

Sanza: This version is popular in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other regions.

Likembe or Likumbe: Both are common in the Congo and surrounding areas.

Kadongo and Akogo: These variants are found in Uganda.

Marimbula and Marimba: These variations are popular in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Other regional names include: finger harp, gourd piano, ikembe, kilembe, mbla, sansa, sansu, timbrh, and zanzu.

How To Play

The basic playing technique involves holding the instrument with both hands and using the thumbs to pluck the tines to produce sound. Music for this instrument is usually written in tablature format that shows which tines to play along with the sequence and rhythm, which makes it easy for beginners.

The thumb piano has gained global popularity due to its ease of use, unique sound, and presence on social media platforms. Additionally, the thumb piano has gained traction in contemporary music as it has been adapted and incorporated into various music genres beyond traditional music, including film scores, video game soundtracks, and more.
