Loki vs. Connor

I know it’s been a while since Marvel’s Thor movie, but I’ve been exponentially giddy over it’s success. Not only was it awesome, but — unlike countless other awesome things — a ton of other people agree. For a mod Odinite like myself, it’s a thrill to finally have a blockbuster generating good PR for my gods, especially Loki, who usually gets the fuzzy end of the lollipop when it comes to media analogues. Even the comics were bad for his rep.

But not so for the film! His character was written well, directed well, and it goes without saying Tom Hiddleston acted the shit out of his part. A whole new slew of fangirls are on deck, daring anybody to call Loki the god of evil. Take that popular misconception!

I really wish all of Loki’s sympathetic fans had been there for Connor.

Angel's son. Educate yourselves.

The two had so much in common — they both were taken from their real fathers and raised by an enemy, feeling they had to destroy their own kind to win their foster father’s love — but Connor’s real dad was Angel, the protagonist. The fandom was firmly on Angel’s side and treated Connor like he was Scrappy-Doo, pulling focus and in the way. I know, I tend to compulsively route for underdogs. Connor couldn’t catch a break, from life or from the fandom. Where was your nurturing and sensitivity then, fangirls?

As far as tragic back-stories go, Connor beats Loki by leaps and bounds. Loki was abandoned by his true father, the monstrous Laufey, and rescued by the benevolent Odin, whisked away to a gorgeous castle to be a prince, forever in the fond embrace of royalty, the truth kept from him out of love. Whereas Connor was stolen from his loving father by a crazy, vengeance-bent vampire hunter named Holtz, taken to the darkest of the dark worlds, where everything preyed on humans, and was raised to be a self-loathing weapon.

And because Holtz could never love Connor as much as he hated Angel, Connor had been plotting Angel’s destruction since he was a little boy. Think about that: Connor was convinced that the only way to be loved by his father, was to kill his father. He and Loki have a lot in common in that respect, but Connor definitely needed a cool-down hug a lot more.

So Connor wins the gold in Freudian Excuse and Daddy Issues, and in the Family Smackdown event, they’re pretty evenly matched. But when it comes to everything else they have in common, I must admit, Loki cleans up. World Destruction, Dejected Wailing, Pajama-Foot Kicking — Loki has it all over Connor. I thought they might tie for snarling, but then I remembered that thing Loki does with his voice when he’s angry. You know the thing. Like if The Mighty Monarch swallowed a scotch bonnet.

Also, nobody beats Hiddles at Extreme Bambi Eyes, not even Vincent Kartheiser.

"I'm going to use this every day."

Verdict: Loki, winner and still champion.

Dead-Men Comics!

For the past couple months, I’ve been making comics for Dead Men, a Pirates of the Caribbean fansite that I co-run with Faith. The comics are all PG (so fans of all ages can read), and generally just silly junk, and it’s been fun doing it. Here’s one to give you an idea:
