these tips and you will definitely have a much faster and more reliable PC! Most of the below tips works for windows XP.

1. Wallpapers: They slow your whole system down, so if you're willing to compromise, have a basic plain one instead!

2. Drivers: Update your hardware drivers as frequently as possible. New drivers tend to increase system speed especially in the case of graphics cards, their drivers are updated by the manufacturer very frequently!

3. Minimizing: If you want to use several programs at the same time then minimize those you are not using. This helps reduce the overload on RAM.

4. Boot Faster: The 'starting Windows 95/98' message on startup can delay your booting for a couple of seconds. To get rid of this message go to c:\ and find the file Msdos.sys. Remove the Read-Only option. Next, open it in Notepad or any other text editor. Finally, go to the text 'Options' within the file and make the following changes: Add BootDelay=0. To make your booting even faster, set add Logo=0 to remove the Windows logo at startup.

5.. Restart only Windows: When restarting your PC, hold down Shift to only restart Windows rather than the whole system which will only take a fraction of the time.

6. Turn Off Animations: Go to Display Settings from the Control Panel and switch to the Effects Tab. Now turn off Show Windows Content While Dragging and Smooth Edges on Screen Fonts. This tip is also helpful with Windows XP because of the various fade/scroll effects.

7. Faster Start-Menu Access: Go to the Start menu and select Run. Now type Regedit and hit Enter. The Registry Editor will appear on the screen. Now, open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_ USER\Control Panel\Desktop. You should see a MenuShowDelay value. If you don't then do the following: right click on a blank space in the right pane and select New\String. Change the name in the new value to MenuShowDelay. Now that we have the MenuShowDelay value, double click on it and enter 0 in the value data field. This sets the start menu delay to 0 milliseconds.

8. Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution. The lower it is, the faster your PC.

9. Turn off Active Desktop: Go to your Display Properties and switch to the Web tab. Uncheck View My Active Desktop As a Web Page. Since the Active Desktop option under Windows 98 uses a lot of system resources, this option can have a dramatic effect on the speed of the whole system.

10. Defragment Often: Windows 98's Defrag tool uses Application Acceleration from Intel which means that when you defragment your drive, data is physically arranged on the drive so that applications will load faster.

11. Take your PC to Bed: Using the Advanced Power Management feature under Windows 98 gives you the option to use the sleep command. That way, you can send your PC to sleep instead of shutting it down and then restarting it. It's as simple as pressing a button and then pressing the same button to wake it up. You can tell Windows after how many minutes/hours of inactivity to automatically sleep the machine in the Advanced Power Management section of the Control Panel.

12. Faster Internet Access: If you use the Internet for reference and the sites you visit are rarely updated then try the following. In IE (the same can be done in Netscape) go to Tools, Internet Options. Next, click on Settings... In the Temporary Internet Files section. Finally, select Never for the first option and double the amount of storage space to use, click OK!

13. Benchmarking: Benchmarking can be very useful when run frequently. It can tell you how your PC's components are performing and then compare them to other machines like yours. For example, when you overclock your PC, you want to know how much more speed you have and whether it is stable. All this and more can be discovered using benchmarking. An excellent piece of software for doing this job is SiSoft Sandra which can be found in the Downloads File Archive!

14. Refresh the Taskbar without restarting: If you in some way change the taskbar, either in Regedit or elsewhere, you can refresh the task bar without restarting. Hold down Ctrl Alt Del, and double click on Explorer. Say Yes to close Explorer, but no to closing Windows. This will refresh the Taskbar and system tray.

15. Quick CD Eject: Instead of pushing the button on your drive, right-click your CD drive letter in My Computer and click on Eject. This will also remove any icons that have become associated with the CD drive.

16. Start Up Programs: Windows can be slowed down when programs run on start up. To eliminate this, check your Start up folder. You can access it from the start menu: Start, Programs, Start Up. Another way to eliminate programs from loading even before Windows actually starts is by doing the following: Click on Start, then Run. Type msconfig. It will take quite a long time for this program to load, but when you finally see it on your screen, explore the different tabs. They all have to do with how quickly your PC boots, so select what you want, and uncheck what you don't want!

17. Fonts: When Windows starts, it loads every single font in the Fonts folder. Therefore, the more fonts you have, the slower the booting process. To get rid of unwanted fonts, simply go to the Fonts folder under c:\windows and remove whatever you don't want. Fonts that have a red letter 'A' as their icon are system fonts, so don't delete them.

18. Stretching Wallpapers: Don't "stretch" your wallpaper in Windows 98 since it actually slows Windows down when you drag icons around on the desktop.

19. RAM Matters: If you have less than 32MB then you should seriously think of upgrading it to at least 64MB. Windows runs much more smoothly with 64MB or higher and tends to use less hard disk space for virtual memory.

20. Partitioning: A very nice little thing you can do to boost system performance. By partitioning your hard drive, splitting one physical drive into several logical ones, you can gain several advantages. 1. If you get a virus or you accidentally format a drive, not all will be lost. 2. By placing the swap file (Win386.swp) on a separate drive, The swap file will be less fragmented and thus, faster. 3. Place Windows on a separate drive and whenever you need to reinstall it, you rest assured that your data is safe on a separate drive. Partitioning can be done using a few programs such as FDisk which comes with DOS. However, FDisk formats everything on the hard disk before partitioning. Alternatively, you can use Partition Magic from
Power Quest to partition your hard disk without losing your data.

Search Rapidshare with Rapidlibrary

For many years now, Rapidshare has been the file-hosting site of choice. Rapidshare’s popularity is primarily due to the fact that it is one of the first sites of its kind that ever appeared on the Internet.

Rapidshare is not without its disappointments, the major one being that there is no way for you to find a specific file that you are looking for. This is where all the Rapidshare file search engines come in. There are a variety of search engines that claim to be the best when it comes to searching for files on Rapidshare.

One of the better search engines I’ve seen is Rapidlibrary. Not only does it look good but it’s pretty effective as well. The initial interface of Rapidlibrary looks a lot like most of the torrent multi-search engines. You can type in your query and select if you you’re your search results in a specific category. The last 200 searches are also displayed on the site in case you’re just browsing around.

Search results can be sorted by size or in alphabetical order. Each result shows the full name of the file, the download link, search tags, and the size of the file. Files that have been deleted recently are also listed but they are grayed out so you don’t need to click on a file just to check if it’s still available for download.

I’m quite happy with Rapidlibrary. I liked the overall look and feel of the site and the search results were pretty impressive, even for some obscure files that I searched for. I don’t usually use Rapidshare but if I do, I’ll definitely use Rapidlibrary to search for my files.

How To Download Music From Esnips

Esnips is a popular file sharing and storing service that offers its members 5 Gigabytes of online storage space that can be used to host videos, pictures and audio files. The audio hosting comes with a music player that recently got updated having the result that Esnips music downloaders were not working anymore.

Esnips have added a referrer check to the music player which means that users can only download songs if they initiate the download with the correct referrer. The process of downloading files from Esnips is therefor extended by one step.

Most steps stay the same on the other hand. The user visits the Esnips website and opens a page that contains a music file that is played in the Esnips player or perform a search and copy the links pointing to the music files to the clipboard. The url of that page is copied into an Esnips download link generator which converts the encrypted download link to the unencrypted one. The step that has changed is the last one. Instead of downloading the music from Esnips directly or pasting it into a download manager the user has to paste the unencrypted url back into the web browser to be able to download it. That is an inconvenience but still better than not being able to download the music from Esnips at all.

Right-click a link and copy it to the clipboard or copy the link from the address bar

Step 3: Paste the link and convert it

Now visit a script that can convert Esnips links so that they point to the correct url that can be used to download the mp3 files from Esnips. One script that can do it is Zuhaib’s Esnips Link Generator.

Step 4: Download

Copy the Download Link and Paste it back into a browser tab. The download for the correct mp3 file should pop up immediately.

Package to convert Windows PC into TV recorder announced

TiVo Inc. and Nero AG of Germany announced Monday that they will be unveiling a package that turns a Windows PC into a TV recorder, identical to a TiVo set-top box.

According to media reports, the kit will cost $199 when it goes on sale Oct. 15, and includes a remote and a TV tuner that plugs into the PC. The interface on the computer screen looks just like the one on a TV equipped with a TiVo box.

The Associated Press reports that the Nero LiquidTV/TiVo PC will go on sale first in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

This article provides you with a very simple method to get orkut scraps delivered directly into your mobile phone as sms messages. The pages you may subscribe are scrapbook, community pages or even community messages. All the messages will be delivered free of cost. Following are the steps to get any orkut page as sms to mobile:

1. Register your mobile phone to MyToday. MyToday supports almost all networks in India.

2. Login to your orkut account and navigate to the page to which you wish to subscribe.

3. Copy the URL of the above page. It should be copied completely including http://. URL can be found in the address bar (where you enter www.orkut.com) of your browser.

4. In other window/ tab, open the orkutfeeds site and in the field provided, paste the above orkut URL and click on subscribe.

5. Now, copy the URL of subscription page as said above.

6. Open your MyToday account, and navigate to a page as seen in the snap in the following way:

a. Under My tab, click on feeds.

b. Under My Folders, click on Manage feeds.

c. Under Folders tab, click on SMS.

d. You will now get into a page as shown in the snap below.

7. Enter the name as you wish. Say, “My scraps” and at the URL field, paste the URL which you have copied from orkutfeeds subscription page, check Send SMS, click Create.

8. You’re done! Now, you can expect your scraps delivered into your mobile phone as and when your scrapbook updates.

The whole process should take 5 minutes at the most.

How to Create an invisible account in Windows XP

Go to the registry key:

HKLM\Software\ Microsoft\ W indowsNT\CurrentVer sion\W inlogon\SpecialAcco unts\U serList
Create a new DWORD, setting its name to the name of the account you wish to hide. Then set its value to 0 to hide it. However, this account isn't completely hidden because it is visible to administrators in Local User and Groups and also the profile is visible in the Documents and Settings. When you are at the welcome screen, and you want to login to this account, then press Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice and it will display the log-on promt style similar to Windows 2000, then type the username, and the password and hit enter.

Insert your name in the bottom right taskbar!

It's safe to say Palm is plunging ahead with the Centro's industrial design, but the stark (glossy?) black and white color scheme with the phone/end orbs make it slick, rather than kiddie cool. Unfortunately, the Palm OS (new or othewise) is nowhere in sight, just Windows Mobile. Here's a shot of the back, too:

I'm looking to their new unreleased Idealpad S10. it's a 10inch lcd screen Asus Eee 1000 size laptop but only $450 with xp and a 120gb drive. Eee 1000 is priced $700. I'm sure the price will go down. For the larger laptops, Lenovo just introduced a new laptop which is geared for us artsy photographers and the likes. The LCD monitor has better more accurate colors and a lot of cool new features not found on current laptops, it has a digitizer(yes tablet pcs already has) and dual drives in a RAID configuration. Your image is pretty safe on this new laptop. it's pretty big though, 17inch lcd size. not exactly a lite weight travel companion.

With commuter literacy as well as dependency rapidly disperses throughout our country, we have yet to see a laptop that will meet the requirements of a computer savvy, traveling, working class hero with a degree. The hardware offered in these currently available machines seems to only appeal to a select few newcomers to the tech world. To someone that knows there way around an operating system as well as possessing the ability to put the entirety of a computers hardware to use, I am not very impressed with our currently available, selection at hand. So, I have put together a list of the hardware requirements I would be very pleased to see in a machine. There should be no reason why in this day in age that we should have to settle for sub par configurations:

1. 13.3 inch LED display (for smaller battery consumption)

2. A quality graphics Card w/ HD support and DVI or equally as good HDMI out

3. >= 160GB 7200rpms Hard drive or

> 64GB Solid State Hard drive option

4. 3 or more USB ports

5. LED lit keyboard (For typing in the dark )

6. Web Cam

7. Support of >= 4GB of ram (although most OS can only read 4GB)

8. Bluetooth

9. Microphone

10. Wireless N networking card ( Broadband optional)

11. 9 cell battery (or some sort of equivalent high capacity battery)

12. MOST OF ALL IT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE WITH NO OS INSTALLED! (will save you $150+)

LG's 13.3-inch P300 arrives in Europe, Americans beg a little more

As expected, South Koreans got their hands around LG's stylish P300 a good while back, and while Americans just knew it was headed stateside in short order, it looks like Europe has received the nod for second dibs. The LED-backlit 13.3-incher reportedly packs an Intel T8300 processor (yeah, that's Penryn), 3GB of DDR2 RAM, an NVIDIA graphics set, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel camera, dual-layer DVD writer and a couple of USB 2.0 ports to boot. For those already head over heels for the design, you can lay down €1,599 ($2,350) right now to claim your own -- just don't rub it in too much, okay?

LG halts sale of Z1-AE007 laptop, suspects defective battery

It's not like LG hasn't had issues with its batteries before, and even after confirming that they were unquestionably safe just last week, the firm has suddenly removed its Z1-AE007 from the market after suspecting that faulty batteries may be included. Reportedly, one of said models "caught fire" in Seoul and presumably startled the graduate student who owned it, but a company spokesperson stopped short of proclaiming that a recall was in order. Furthermore, the individual noted that "the matter should be consulted with the battery maker," essentially shoving every ounce of blame as far as humanly possible away from LG.

Use your laptop as an Xbox/Xbox 360 "Wireless Adapter" on Windows XP/Vista, and Mac OSX

I hate how the Xbox 360's wireless adapter costs $100, so I looked online on how to use any adapter as one. I couldn't find an article on that, but found that you can use your laptop as a gateway, but many articles didn't work, the way they said to do it. I looked on Instructables to see if there were any how-to's about it, and there were none, so here is by second Instrucable.
I Edited this to show how to do it with Vista and Mac, so this will work for all 3. The one done by me is for Windows XP. Step 4 is Windows Vista. Step 5 is Mac OSX, both Leopard and Tiger

P.S.- This is new information. I just edited this on January 3, 2008. If you do this, you won't be able to connect to the internet through your Ethernet port anymore. Only providing internet will be possible. If you want to know how to fix this, scroll down to my comment about it.
