Dreaming of Ireland – Cliffs of Moher

I thought I’d revisit one of my favourite photos I’ve ever taken, even if it was taken with my old Digital Rebel and kit lens, re-edited tonight. Whenever I hear Irish music, I always think of the month I spent in Ireland last April. It makes me wish I could go back. I can’t even watch the movie Once because it makes me miss Dublin too much, even though it’s a beautiful movie with gorgeous music.

This photo was taken at the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland, which reminds me a lot of the west coast of Canada – rainy, windy, and cloudy, but beautiful. The beaches are similar to our rocky beaches on Vancouver Island, but the grass is much, much greener. I think my dream wedding would be at O’Brien’s Tower at the Cliffs of Moher, maybe an elopement with an awesome reception back home after. I would love to photograph a wedding in Ireland, especially at the Cliffs, but anywhere really.

Michon Family Portraits – Holland Point Park – Victoria, BC

Claude hired me from Winnipeg to take some family portraits in Victoria, when he came to visit his new grandchild. It’s always interesting to finally meet people at their portrait sessions when I hadn’t met them before. This whole family (and their dog) was very friendly and fun. They didn’t want traditional “gathering around a rock” family portraits and had a bunch of great ideas of their own. The sun was a bit harsh that day, but I tried to use it to my advantage. I’m actually a big fan of bright white skies and sun flare. And I love getting that sparkling ocean in my photos.

Amy and Rachel’s Wedding – Laurel Point Inn – Victoria, BC

On Wednesday, Amy and Rachel got married in the garden at the Laurel Point Inn. They travelled from Puyallup, Washington to have their wedding in Victoria, along with several members of their family and friends. I think they were the smiliest couple I’ve ever seen after a wedding ceremony. They headed back home and had a reception on Saturday, where I hear they were planning to share some of their photos. I hope everyone enjoyed them and felt like they were there. I loved being a part of such an intimate event.

Wedding Planning Resource: Blogs!

I’ve been meeting a lot of engaged couples lately who are into DIY or non-traditional weddings or even just saving a little bit of money here and there. I love to discuss these ideas with them and I try to point them to the best source of inspiration I know: wedding blogs. There are so many wonderful wedding blogs out there that provide unique ideas for free. They tend to have really beautiful photography too, which I love to look at.

Here’s a few of my favourite wedding blogs and a very brief summary of them.

Rock ‘n Roll Bride – I love Rock ‘n Roll Bride. I love Rock ‘n Roll brides, and grooms. Kat features gorgeous photography of people with amazing style and weddings a bit, or a lot, off the beaten path. I’m dying to get a wedding featured on there, so come on rock n rollers book me for your wedding.

Wedding Chicks – A bit more traditional, but full of more beautiful photos. The focus here is definitely on the details, many of which are DIY. The Chicks love vintage and romance.

Once Wed – More pretty photos of real weddings. You can even buy a used designer dress there.

Wholly Matrimony – A blog focusing on destination weddings. Victoria is a pretty popular destination itself. Check out this blog for advice from people who’ve gotten married away from home.

Style Me Pretty – Heavy on the details and style. Kind of like reading a fancy glossy magazine.

100 Layer Cake – More unique wedding ideas with style.

Eloped - A new blog for those tiny weddings, elopements, vow renewals, etc.

Those are just a few. There are so many great wedding blogs out there. Go out and explore – be inspired.

Cassie, Hayden, and Baby Kobe – Newborn Portraits – Victoria, BC

I had my first ever newborn shoot on Sunday with Cassie and her 1.5 week old baby Kobe. Her son Hayden also came along, but was a bit camera shy. I was pretty nervous to try this new genre of portrait photography, especially since I don’t have a lot of experience with babies in general. My friend Irene came along to help out and hold a reflector for me. It was great to have an extra pair of hands and set of eyes to make sure the baby didn’t roll into the river or anything.

The focus was supposed to be on baby shots, but I definitely have a weakness for mama and baby shots. I love photos where people are interacting with one another, especially when those people clearly love each other so much.

Jen and Mike’s Wedding – Merridale Cider, Cobble Hill, BC

I was the second photographer at Jen and Mike’s wedding for the amazing Karen McNeil a couple of weeks ago. It was at Merridale Cider, which is really pretty and totally worth the drive. It was my first time as a second shooter, and it was a great learning experience. I was assigned to shoot the guys getting ready. They kept asking me questions, like “are these pants high enough?” or “how do I do this pocket square?” and I replied, “I don’t know. I’m usually with the bride!” And I still don’t know how to put a boutenniere on.

Here are some of my favourite shots from the day. The guys started at the Oceanfront Grand Resort, which is set in an gorgeous location.

Thanks to Karen for inviting me to shoot with her, and thanks to everyone at the wedding for being so darn photogenic.

Chris and Noya’s Wedding – The English Inn, Esquimalt, BC

Two weeks ago, I photographed Chris and Noya’s wedding ceremony at The English Inn. I’d never been there before. Who knew such a beautiful place was hidden away in Esquimalt? Aside from the gorgeous setting, I think what I loved the most about this wedding was how cheerful everyone was. The bride and groom, family, friends, and even the officiant were full of genuine smiles throughout the wedding and portraits. They were all happy to get their photos taken too, so it was really easy to get great group portraits.

Here are a few of my favourite shots of the couple, their wedding party, and the lovely garden.

Things I Love Thursday v2.0

I think it’s about time I shared some joyful things on this blog again. I’ve been having a really good week, business-wise. And the non-business stuff isn’t too bad either.

Amazing Shows – I saw The Glitch Mob with Free the Robots and Deru at Element a couple of weeks ago. It was so awesome! My friend Irene and I went and got right in the middle of the dance floor for the openers, who were great. When Glitch Mob came on, we had to move to the outskirts. Short people like us get anxious in big crowds, and this crowd was going crazy! Glitch Mob really knows how to get and keep an audience going. We danced so long and hard, I could barely walk the next day. I’ve been a huge fan of edIT for a while now, so I was really excited to see him perform with Glitch Mob. I can’t wait to see another great show, which can be a rarity in Victoria. I hear Jeremy Fisher is coming back soon though.
2011 Weddings – I’m suddenly starting to hear from a lot more couples getting married in 2011, which is making me excited for the future. Still booking some last minute 2010 weddings , which I also love because they’re sort of unexpected. I especially love the 2011 brides and grooms who are really serious about photography. They’ve checked out a bunch of sites and finally contacted me because they really love my work. I think that’s my favourite thing ever: people really loving and getting what I do.

Sweet Animals – I love animals, as you can tell from my work with animal rescues (and my cool cat, Freddie). My friend Lynn went on vacation to Italy for a couple of weeks and I took in her two cats and foster cat. I think I’m addicted to the affectionate head-butts that her cat Millie does, though she did hurt my nose a couple of times. Above is a photo of Olivia, a foster cat from the Greater Victoria Animal Crusaders. She’s a sweet girl, but she’s been in foster care for quite a long time. I’d love to see her go to a wonderful home. She can be shy, but once she gets comfortable with you, she’ll come out for pets and snuggles. Babycakes – I’m trying out some vegan and gluten-free cooking and baking lately. I found this great baking book, Babycakes from a bakery in New York City. It has pictures of almost everything, which is my number one desire when choosing a cookbook. My friend Jon and I made some red velvet cupcakes, which came out a little too dense because we unsuccessfully substituted gluten-free flour for spelt flour, but some of my friends liked them anyway. Then I made some vanilla cupcakes with garbanzo-fava bean flour and they were super yummy. Dying to make the banana chocolate-chip bread next.
Meeting Other Photographers – I recently met a bunch of local wedding photographers and it’s so nice to talk to people who are in the same business as I am. The internet is a wonderful source of knowledge about the business and technique of wedding photography, but it’s really nice to get a local perspective sometimes. It’s also great to know that if there’s ever an emergency, I have a bunch of pros I can call to stand in for me. I also love looking at their blogs and seeing what kind of images they produce with the same locations and light as I’m working with. If you’re a local professional photographer, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.
Clue – Rediscovered my love for the movie Clue a few weeks ago. My friends and I have been fiendishly playing the board game recently. I got a 1970s version of it at the Salvation Army for about $2.50. It’s missing most of the character pieces, so we just use the funny game pieces from Cranium instead. Miss Scarlet always seems to win.
Summer sun; stunning mountain views while driving down highway 17; having drinks and fabulous food with the girls; working on a secret surprise for my website visitors; “Fools in Love” by Inara George; It Happened One Night; Jimmy Stewart reading a poem about his dog; pretty Etsy letterpress-printed notecards; former clients who leave me glowing Google reviews or write me touching Facebook messages or emails.
