These are the lyrics to "Cups", aka "When I'm Gone", performed by
Lulu and the Lampshades (also here) on their Cold Water album. I note them here because all the other sources on the internet are either incomplete or incorrect. Italicized phrases indicate areas where I have trouble understanding the lyrics.

I got my ticket for the long way 'round
two bottles of whiskey for the way
and I sure would like some sweet company
oh I'm leaving tomorrow what'd'ya say

When I'm gone (When I'm gone)
When I'm gone (When I'm gone)
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me by my hair
You're gonna miss me everywhere
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone

I got my ticket for the long way 'round
the one with the prettiest views
it's got mountains it's got rivers
it's got woods that'll give you shivers [see note]
but it sure would be prettier with you.

When I'm gone (When I'm gone)
When I'm gone (When I'm gone)
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me by my walk
You will miss me by my talk

You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
I got my ticket for the long way 'round
these feet weren't built to stay too long
and I've gone out on my own
but you'll miss me when you're home
it's for you, dear, that I sing this song.

When I'm gone (When I'm gone)
When I'm gone (When I'm gone)
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me by my hair
You're gonna miss me everywhere
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone

When I'm gone (When I'm gone)
When I'm gone (When I'm gone)
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me by my walk
You will miss me by my talk
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone

Note: On the album they sing "it's got woods that'll give you shivers", but at other times they sing, "it's got site's that'll give you shivers".

We've already
posted the video to Facebook (and yes, we both posted it, because we are
THAT EXCITED).

We were practicing with Max riding while I held on to the seat. I switched
to holding his shoulder, since that didn't require bending over and walking
like a duck, and noticed that I didn't really have to provide much in the
way of assistance. I took my hand off a few times, and when Max realized
he was able to bike on his own he started saying, "Don't hold on, Papa!
Let go!". It was awesome.

He still needs practice -- starting is of course a challenge -- but this
means that any day now we can put Max on his bike and Kira on the push bike
and have a little around-the-block adventure together.

Woohoo!

I have no idea where he picked that up.

Later that day, he wandered into the kitchen and said to Alix, "Considering

since we bought the house last year, but it suddenly became more urgent
after I managed to accidentally pull the spray head off. Oops.

The replacement faucet arrived earlier this week. It's a Kohler "Forte":

Not only is this a huge improvement on our previous faucet (for example,
while both the old and new faucet are technically "pullout spray" models,
only on the new one are we able to reliably pull out -- and put back in --
the spray head), but it was also surprisingly easy to install. I was
expecting all sorts of complication and really it was just pop it in place,
screw things together, and turn it on. Cool!

about our power consumption. The TED comprises two parts, a "Measuring
Transmitting Unit" (MTU), which connects via a pair of "Current
Transformer" (CT) clamps to the mains, and a gateway, which is a small
computer the size of a power brick that provides the web interface. The
MTU communicates with the gateway over the house power lines.

The web interface ("Footprints") provides current and historical data,
realtime graphs, and so forth. The gateway is also able to export data to
Google Powermeter, which provides a similar view onto the data but is
easier to access from outside the house. Powermeter generates graphs like
this for recent usage:

We've only been running the TED for a few days, so while it's fun to look
at the data it's not really useful yet. Eventually we hope it will help us
get a better handle on our electric bill and help us identify ways to save
money.

that we might want to go the library. "NO! No go Library!", said Kira.
"Why not?" I inquired. "No like library. Go 'seum!"

So, we went to the museum. I packed the Ergo in my backback along with
snacks and other necessities, and Kira hopped onto her push bike:

Kira road her bike from our house to the bus stop, and then from
Charles St. station to the Museum of Science. We passed by a few
groups of people who were all terribly impressed by Kira's bicycle riding!
Kira was fascinated by the Charles ("there's the Charles River!"), and we
saw a school of large fish basking just below the surface.

At the museum we visited the live animal exhibit (where we saw a ferret, a
meerkat, a rabbit, a glass lizard, and a duck) and the discovery room
(where we saw frog, played with the water, and Kira participated in an
experiment by trying to put together a puzzle).

Kira road her push-bike from the museum to Lechmere station, and we
caught the bus to pick up Max at preschool. After meeting up with Max,
Kira went into the Ergo on my front, my backpack went on my back, and Max
got on the push bike. A flaw in this plan: while Kira rides at a fast
walking pace, Max is a speed daemon, and it's very hard to jog with bags
fore and aft! So we made good time home.

Hopefully they're both tuckered out and will have a good long nap!

For various reasons we
ended up making one at the last minute late Friday night; it came out
surprisingly tasty.

The original recipe is from Cooks.com.

We frosted it with a simple cream-cheese frosting, to which we added a
little additional strawberry jam for color and flavor, and then topped it
with fresh strawberries.

Ingredients

2 c. sugar

1 c. shortening

3 egg yolks, beaten

1 c. strawberry jam

1 c. buttermilk

3 c. sifted flour

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. soda

1/2 tsp. salt

To prepare

Cream together shortening and sugar thoroughly. Add beaten egg yolks.
Combine well. Add strawberry jam and beat well. Sift flour, measure and add
cinnamon, soda and salt. Sift together. Add flour and 1 cup buttermilk
alternately, mixing well after each addition. Fold in 3 stiffly beaten egg
whites. Pour into three 9 inch greased cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees about
30 minutes and remove from pans. Frost when cool.

<col class="field-name" />
<col class="field-body" />

Tags:

recipe cake strawberry

twist-open can at the grocery store).

The kids weren't so fond of them (because the quiches had Green Things in
them, I think), but the grown-ups thought they were very tasty.

I used some of Alix's chicken sausage, which made them extra special.

Ingredients

1 pkg. refrigerator biscuits

1/2 lb. sausage

1 1/2 c. cottage cheese

3 eggs, beaten

1 tsp. dried basil

1/2 C chopped red pepper

1/2 c. Parmesan cheese

Some finely chopped scallions

Salt & pepper to taste

To prepare

Preheat oven to 375F.

Brown sausage and crumble.

Saute red pepper until soft.

Divide biscuits in half and mold in bottom of muffin tins.

Put sausage on biscuit half.

Combine pepper and remaining ingredients and pour on top of sausage.

Bake for 20 minutes until firm and brown at edges. Serves 10.

attention from his sister...but yesterday he decided maybe it was okay
after all.

Max giggled, so Kira happily gave him lots more kisses. Finally, Max gave
Kira a big hug, and said, "I loved her kisses so I gave her a hug!"

1 cup butter, softened

1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

2 eggs

2 tablespoons milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)

3 cups rolled oats

2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

1 cup shredded coconut

To prepare

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar and white sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the milk and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; stir into the sugar mixture until well blended. Stir in the oats, chocolate chips. walnuts and coconut until evenly distributed. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven for a chewy cookie or 14 minutes for a firmer cookie.

Cool for 1 minute on the cookie sheet and then remove to wire rack. Cool completely and then store in tightly sealed container.

quite an adventure. We put Kira in a stroller and wandered over to a
nearby field (apparently a former landfill). We first wanted to take a
look at a nearby pond, so we had to get Kira out of the stroller because
the path was to narrow. We wandered down the path a little bit but it soon
became too muddy, so we went back to the field where the stroller was
parked. Kira spotted the hills in front of us and immediately decided that
she had a mission -- she headed off into the hills, calling, "come! come!
climb!", so we followed after her.

Other than some low hills, the field was easy walking, which worked out
well for Kira -- she seemed to prefer the ability to wander arbitrarily
about the field over being constrained along a linear path. She
immediately spotted the first of two boggy areas and made a beeline towards
it; we had to dissuade her from trying to jump in it. She thought maybe we
didn't understand what she wanted to do, so she jumped up and down ("jump!
jump!") while pointing at the water.

Having been successfully diverted from the water, Kira spotted the next
hill some ways across the field, so we all went walking off for the next
climb. Upon reaching the summit, she said, "hill again!". Then she
spotted the mountains in the distance, and we thought maybe it was time to
start heading home :).

Here's our walk:

and we've been having tons of fun.

I

We had an open house at Max's coop Sunday morning. I'd signed us up for
the early (10:00am) shift (because the coffee and donuts are fresh, of
course), but when our time was up an hour later the kids and I ended up
staying -- we were all having so much fun! The weather was gorgeous,
several of Max's preschool friends were there, too, and the kids were
variously giving each other "bus rides" on the double trike and playing
hide-and-seek. Kira spent a lot of time in the playhouse on the
playground, making sand cupcakes and serving them to me.

The grownups were hanging out on the benches, drinking coffee, snacking,
and chatting away; the kids were occupied and happy -- it was great!

When I finally decided it was really time to go, I started gathering up
coats and things to put in the trailer. I let Max know we'd be leaving
soon, fully expecting a major fuss and manual extraction from the
playground car he was riding around in. Much to my surprise, he
immediately got out and said, "I'm getting out because I promised". Which
he had, earlier. Max, you are awesome!

II

We have a pair of books by Canadian author Robert Munch that have enjoyed
a brief run as favorite books for both Max and Kira. One of
the stories involves a girl who climbs to the top of a tree and sings,
"I'm the king of the castle! Papa's a dirty rascal!" (and a similar verse
for mom, too). Max is highly amused by this and likes to give us impromptu
renditions of it throughout the day.

This evening we were playing outside in the driveway. Max and Kira went to
explore the neighbors' bushes, and as Kira tried to climb up a particularly
sturdy bush I heard her start singing: "Papa <mumble> castle, papa
<mumble> castle".

III

At one of Max's Music Together classes (what seems like ages ago, now),
the teacher sang a lullaby that was very pretty, and I've been singing a
modified version of it to both kids ever since then:

Like a ship in the harbor

like a father and child

like a light in the darkness

I'll hold you awhile

We'll rock on the water

I'll cradle you deep

I'll hold you and softly

sing you to sleep

Kira often asks for this at bedtime ("boat song!"), and when I sang it
tonight she tried to sing it with me...with her cheek pressed up against
mine and she sang softly into my ear. As I put her to bed she was singing
happily "sing you to sleep".

back in January 2009. The album is produced by John Carter Cash (Johnny
Cash's son) and Snoop Dogg -- which ought to give you some idea where the
album is going.

I have an eccentric taste in music, and this album sounded like exactly my
cup of tea -- combining both my love of Johnny Cash with a fondness for
rhythm. The tracks are a mixed bag, but a few of them really deliver.

This is the track list:

Big River [Count de Money Remix]

Country Boy [Sonny J Remix]

I Walk the Line [QDT Muzic Remix]

Doin' My Time [The Heavy Remix]

Leave That Junk Alone [Alabama 3 Remix]

Port of Lonely Hearts [Midnight Juggernauts Remix]

Folsom Prison Blues [Pete Rock Remix]

Straigh A's in Love [Troublemaker Remix]

Sugartime [Kennedy Remix]

Rock Island Line [Wolf Remix]

Belshazzar [MacHine Drum Remix]

I Heard That Lonesome Whistle Blow [Apparat Remix]

Wide Open Road [Count de Money Remix]

Trail to Mexico [Mexican Institute of Sound Remix]

Hey Porter [Mocean Worker Remix]

Katy Too [DJ Enjay Remix] - Johnny Cash, Snoop Dogg

My Treasure [J. Scott G Remix]

I'm particularly fond of:

Sugartime

This is a fun, pop-y remix of the song. It's catchy -- some folks might
say it was pandering to the mass market, but I'm bopping away while
writing this and enjoying it immensely.

Country Boy

Cash's own delivery on this song is particularly suited to the
rap-influenced style of this remix. There's a banjo/mouth harp sample
that underlies much of the song, and it's an interesting counterpoint to
the driving, synth-heavy baseline.

Get Rhythm

This is another high-energy dance-hall-ish remix. It reminds me a lot of
the remix version of Elvis Presley's "A Little Less Conversation" from
ELV1S 30 #1 Hits.

Hey Porter

Takes the original version and adds a great drum line and a few other
enhancements making it hard to stop moving while listening to this one.

What's not to like? Ironically, Snoop Dogg's own version of "Walk the
Line" really isn't that interesting.

I don't know if this album will appeal to traditional Cash fans, but I
think Cash would approve, given his covers and collaborations over the
years. Some of the tracks are hit-or-miss, but on the whole I think it's a
fun listen.

In
addition to helping measure out ingredients and whisk the dry goods
together, Max helped me operate the Kitchenaid mixer for the first time.
Watching Max work in the kitchen is interesting...he pays very close
attention to instructions, and tries very hard to do the right thing. He's
gotten old enough that I can say, "fill this up with raisins twice and dump
them in the mixer", and then go do something else while he takes care of
the raisins.

2 tsp Double acting baking powder

1 tsp Baking soda

1/8 tsp Salt

2 tsp Ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp Ground nutmeg

8 Tbsp Unsalted butter (1 stick) softened

1/4 C Granulated sugar

1/2 C Packed light brown sugar

2 large Eggs (at room temperature)

1 C Sour cream

1 tsp Vanilla extract

3/4 C Sweetened shredded coconut

6 oz. Semisweet chocolate; finely chopped

2/3 C Raisins

Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350F. Line a
muffin tin with muffin cups. Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda,
salt, cinnamon and nutmeg into a medium bowl. Stir together with a wooden
spoon until thoroughly blended. In a 4 1/2-quart bowl of a heavy-duty
electric mixer, using the paddle attachment, beat the butter until creamy.
Gradually add the granulated sugar and brown sugar and beat for 3 to 4
minutes, until the mixture is light in texture. One at a time, beat in the
eggs, beating well after each addition. Beat in the sour cream and vanilla.
On low speed, one-third at a time, beat in the flour mixture. Stir in the
coconut, chocolate and raisins. Using two spoons, fill the muffin cups 3/4
full. Bake the muffins for 16 to 18 minutes, or until springy to the touch.
Cool the muffins in the pan, set on a rack. When cool, store the muffins
immediately in a plastic bag or airtight container.

We brought this
casserole with us. The recipe is from my mom's cookbook. It's very tasty,
definitely kid-friendly, and you can prepare it the night before and then
toss it in the oven for 45 minutes the next day.

Egg and sausage brunch casserole

Ingredients

6 eggs, beaten

6 slices bread, cubed

1 1/2 C shredded sharp cheese

1 tsp dry mustard

1 tsp salt

2 C half-and-half

1 lb bulk sausage, browned and drained

To prepare

Butter a 9in. by 13in. baking dish. Scatter the bread cubes and browned
sausage evenly in the dish. Scatter shredded sharp cheese on top. In
blender container, blend beaten eggs, mustard, salt, and half-and-half.
Pour mixture over contents in dish. Bake 45 min. at 350F. May need to
bake longer if refrigerated ahead of time.

Alix and Max were playing out in the drive this afternoon when a hawk
swooped in over Alix's shoulder and landed on the fence between our house
and the house next door. A nearby squirrel yelled at it for a while. The
hawk hopped over to our neighbor's play structure, then flew up into a
nearby tree.

had been singing and otherwise chattering away while I was reading to Max.
As soon as I walked into the room, Kira started doing her best sleep
impression: she lay down with her blankets on top of her, closed her eyes,
and started "snoring".

"Snrrrrrrr...ssssssssss"

"Snrrrrrrr...ssssssssss"

etc...

She keps this up as long as I was in the room. As soon as I closed the
door I heard a squeal of glee (and we ultimately had to move Kira to the
guest room [again] because the kids were having so much fun).

to our house. I got Kira in her coat and boots and turned my attention to
Max. I turned around and Kira was out of her boots and in the sneakers of
our five year old neighbor.

Off with the sneakers, on with the boots.

I gather up my hat and gloves, turn around...and find her once again in the
sneakers.

Off with the sneakers, on with the boots.

I finally have everything together and we're ready to head out the door and
KIRA WOULD YOU STOP PUTTING ON THOSE SNEAKERS! Seriously, you're like some
sort of pseudo-Houdini whose only trick is escaping from boots in the blink
of an eye. No, look, stop that; please stop trying to take off one boot
while I'm putting the other one on.

We did finally make it home.

The plan

With Valentine's Day almost upon us, and at the urging of our au pair, we
decided it was time for us to have a dinner together sans kids. We spent
some time earlier today looking up restaurants in Belmont, since we've
only been here a few months and haven't really had the chance to explore
the local restaurant scene. We ended up with two top contenders:

Il Casale in Belmont Center, and

Kitchen on Common in Cushing Square.

Il Casale was having a special fixed-price dinner ($59 for four courses),
and everything on the menu looked tasty. Unfortunately, Il Casale is
apparently a very popular dining destination because they were all booked
up.

Our final plan was to walk over to Kitchen on Common and either eat there
or, if they were too crowded or something, walk on up Common St. to Belmont
Center where there are a number of other restaurants.

Leaving the house

Leaving the house was surprisingly easy. In the past, every time we've
gone out in the evening Max has had a complete meltdown ("Nooooooo, dont'
go, I don't want you to go!" etc.), so we were bracing for the worst. For
whatever reason (possibly the excitement of having our au pair's friend in
the house) Max and Kira were both in incredibly good moods. Max even opened
the door for us when we left! As we wandered down the sidewalk we looked
at eachother in amazement. I hope this is the beginning of a new trend!

At the restaurant

Kitchen on Common is a small place, but we were able to walk in and get
tables immediately. They focus on preparing meals using local foods, and
they have a small menu that changes frequently.

The food was delicious. For an appetizer, I had a potato, leak, and sausage
soup; the sausage was made at the restaurant. The soup was a welcome
beginning to the meal; it had a light broth and a peppery kick that left
the back of my throat tingling. Alix had a polenta with mushrooms and
herbs, accompanied by a small salad with arugula and other greens.

For our main course, I had a grilled pork chop with fingerling potatoes and
a side of maple roasted carrots. The pork chop was juicy and tasty, the
fingerling tomatoes were yummy, and the maple roasted carrots were
wonderful. I think the carrots, or some semblance thereof, may be making
an appearance at our dinner table one of these days.

We finished up with two Chocolate Pots de Creme. That's French for "tasty
chocolate pudding".

Altogether a yummy evening.

the morning. While sometimes this can be complicated and stress-inducing,
today was super easy.

Max woke up around 7am, and Max and I managed to have breakfast while Kira
was still sleeping. When Kira woke up, Max and I went upstairs and I was
able to get both kids dressed and changed. Back downstairs, Max quietly
read books to himself while Kira had breakfast (and I kept her company at
the table).

After breakfast, Kira came upstairs with me and read books on our bed while
I took a shower and got dressed, and Max came upstairs when I called for
him and happily brushed his teeth while I brushed Kira's.

Max and I got out the door a little later than I had hoped, but he did some
excellent walking and we got to the bus stop just in time to catch the
[very crowded] bus.

Thanks, Max and Kira!
