The 2026 heliski season is officially in the books, but truth be told, winter’s still hanging on up here. We could easily still be skiing.

The week of March 30 felt more like February than April with Bell 2 guides hunting cold, sheltered-north powder and racking up 41,200m of vertical. Ripley Creek opened the door to bluebird classics and new terrain on a 428cm deep treeline base.

The season finale offered up a little bit of everything at Bell 2, from storm days in the trees to sunshine and a deep powder sendoff on the final day. Ripley skied every single day of the tour and capped it all off with a trek to the stunning Frank Mackie Icefield.

He spent years at the edge of what mountain bikes and snowboards could physically handle, pushing into lines that didn’t exist until he and his crew made them. These days he describes his approach as “freeride light,” which still means considerably more than most people will attempt on their best day.

We sat down with Brett after his trip to hear about his time at Last Frontier Heliskiing, and he didn’t hold back. “It’s truly one of those bucket list things you have to do,” he told us. “It’s the best. There’s nothing better.”

Tippie is Métis, a Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee, and a fixture in BC’s action sports world for the past three decades. He calls North Vancouver home now, splitting his time between announcing races, coaching riders, and still finding the odd cliff worth dropping. He knows what a great line feels like. He knows what real snow feels like. And by the time he headed north to Bell 2 Lodge this past winter, he’d been without powder for too long.

Southern BC had been warm. Rain pushed to the mountain tops. He was grinding groomers just to stay sharp.

“My internal snow addiction was needing it.”

Bell 2 Lodge sits off the Cassiar Highway in Northern BC, closer to the Alaska border than to any significant city. The mountains up there are genuinely big, the kind of big that takes a moment to register, and Last Frontier’s tenure covers 10,100 km². That’s the largest single heli skiing area in the world, and when Tippie saw it mapped out before the first flight, it stopped him.

“I saw all the mountains, the runs, the valleys, the drainages, and just how much terrain they can access. It blew me away.” He pauses. “I believe it’s the largest tenure of any single operation out there.”

What Brett didn’t expect was how much the lodge felt like it belonged there. Thirty years of history on the walls, timber and warmth throughout, a horseshoe of cabins tucked into the property. “Fancier and nicer, but still raw,” he says. It’s the kind of luxury ski trip that doesn’t announce itself — it just feels right.

The first helicopter flight is the moment everything Brett knew about powder changed scale. They flew up the valley, turned left, the door opened, and he stepped out.

“Poof. Right up to my knees in powder. I’m like, this is happening, this is really happening.”

The first couple of days managed some weather carefully, with the guides keeping the group in the subalpine and trees until visibility and snow conditions were right. Then the sky opened and they flew to the summit. The actual top, not partway up, not a good vantage point, but the summit. Skiing 360 degrees in any direction, runs that ran up to 6,000 vertical feet of untracked powder skiing in every direction.

For someone who has spent years chasing individual powder turns on bike trails or picked-over resort faces, the volume shift is hard to process.

“You go to a ski hill and maybe you get one or two powder runs,” he says. “Up at Last Frontier, you’re going to get untracked powder runs every single run, 10 to 14 runs a day. You’re just pounding laps. It’s extravagant. It’s the dream.”

Last Frontier runs four guests per guide, using A-Star helicopters rather than the larger 12-passenger machines common at bigger operations. Tippie has experienced both and he’s direct about what changes — fewer people means the mountain stays fresh longer, a good run stays good, and the energy of the whole day shifts from a managed group experience to something closer to a backcountry skiing experience with your own crew.

“It’s more like an adventure with your little crew than a full assault with a dozen people.”

His crew included a couple from Italy who were strong skiers, and one other guest who was operating in full stealth, on a business trip his wife had no knowledge of. When Brett climbed on the bus at the end of the day with his camera rolling and started working down the aisle giving fist bumps, the guy’s cover nearly cracked. They were good friends by the end of the week.

Off the mountain, the Bell 2 Lodge routine is straightforward and immediately welcome. Into the dry room, boots on the blower racks, then straight to appetisers from the kitchen, a drink at the bar, and everyone swapping stories about the day. Family-style dinner brings the whole lodge together at seven. As Brett put it, when everyone in the room has just had the kind of day on snow that most people only see in films, the energy takes care of itself.

He names his guides before signing off: Dave Stimson, Johnny Smoke, Split Gypsy. He gets the cooks in there too.

For the skier or snowboarder sitting on the fence about whether heli skiing in British Columbia is actually worth it, his answer is the same as it is for everything he believes in.

“Do it. Obviously. It is the dream.”

There’s no fake snow up there. No tracked-out runs by lunch. No fighting for what’s left. Just a helicopter, four of you, a guide who knows every feature of the terrain, and mountains that don’t end. It opened with an all-out storm siege — Bell 2 guides dubbed it “the best Groundhog Day ever” as guests woke up to fresh snow day after day, while Ripley Creek buried the tape measure under 73cm in the first week alone. When the storms briefly parted mid-month, they only revealed even more to love: cold smoke powder in the alpine, bottomless tree skiing, and legendary runs like Boom Town, Eclipse, and The Burn finally getting their moment in the spotlight. Long-time guests were calling these the best ski days of their lives, and then week after week, it kept getting better. The month is closing on a perfect note: bluebird skies, cold temps, and epic powder from ridgetop to valley bottom, with Bell 2 crews exploring all the way to the top of Delta Peak and Ripley guides navigating chest-deep trees under wicked visibility. As of March 23rd, Bell 2 has logged over 193,000 metres of vertical and 162cm of new snow, while Ripley Creek stacked 248cm of fresh and built a snowpack touching 457cm at 1,000 metres.

By day four, they were finishing each other’s sentences at dinner. By departure, they’d exchanged numbers and booked the following year together.

“The next thing you know, they’re booking their trips together for the next two or three years,” says Cliff Umpleby, Director of Operations at Last Frontier Heliskiing. He’s watched this happen dozens of times across his 26 years with the operation. People arrive as strangers. They leave planning reunions.

This is what “skiing like a local” actually means at Last Frontier. It’s not about memorizing run names or learning the terrain. It’s about becoming part of something.

FOur People, One Helicopter

At Last Frontier Heliskiing, groups are capped at four guests per guide — and that’s non-negotiable. Twelve people share a helicopter for the week. No rotating groups, no strangers cycling through. The same faces at breakfast, on the mountain, at dinner.

“By the end of the week, almost everyone’s really good friends,” says Mike Mills, a guest who visited for Heligrass, an event combining heli skiing in British Columbia with intimate acoustic music performances. “There’s a closeness that develops when you’re sharing something like this together.”

Four people can have a real conversation in a helicopter. Four people learn each other’s skiing styles, preferences, and fears. Four people become a unit that moves together and celebrates together at the bottom of a run. Scale that up to ten or twelve, and you’re just skiing near strangers.

It’s one of the defining differences between a small group heli ski lodge in BC and the larger operations. The intimacy isn’t incidental — it’s the whole point.

 

The Lodge After Dark

Bell 2 Lodge heli skiing delivers something most people don’t expect: a social experience as memorable as the skiing itself. Guests stay in satellite cabins scattered around the main building of this remote ski lodge in Canada’s Northern BC wilderness. In heavy snow years, they walk through corridors carved into the snowpack, lit by Christmas lights, sometimes taller than a person. Stars or Northern Lights overhead.

Dinner is family-style. Long tables, shared plates, the day’s stories spilling out over food and wine. The German couple describes a run to the Australians. Someone from Texas jumps in with their own version. The guide adds the detail everyone missed. By dessert, the story belongs to all of them.

The bar stays open as long as people want to talk. Either way, the same faces will be at breakfast, loading into the same helicopter, heading back into the same mountains.

When Strangers Become Regulars

Last summer, Cliff mountain biked in Moab with a couple he first guided 14 years ago. The relationship started in a helicopter over Northern BC. It became something else entirely.

“I’ve seen guests come back for 10, 15, even 20 years,” he says. “They’ve formed friendships with other guests they see annually. They’re not visitors anymore. They’re part of this.”

Some return guests coordinate their bookings to overlap with people they met years earlier. The guest list becomes its own community, connected by a heli ski lodge in Northern BC that most of them only visit once a year — but never stop thinking about.

The Music in the Mountains

Heligrass takes the lodge atmosphere and amplifies it. Jamgrass musicians perform intimate acoustic sets at Bell 2 Lodge while guests spend their days heli skiing in British Columbia’s coastal mountains. The combination sounds improbable until you experience it.

“It’s almost surreal,” Mills recalls. “Less than four feet away from Chris Pandolfi’s fingers flying on the banjo. Then you’re back on the mountain the next morning, and the people you watched that show with are in your helicopter group.”

The shared experience layers. The run you skied becomes the story you tell over dinner becomes the memory you share while listening to music becomes the bond you carry home.

 

What “Local” Actually Means

By midweek, something shifts. The guide stops explaining terrain choices. He knows you prefer trees when the light goes flat. He knows the Australian in your group charges harder after lunch. The group develops its own rhythm, its own shorthand, its own way of moving through the day.

“The more you get to know the guests, the more you trust them, and the more they trust you,” Cliff explains. “By the end of the week, you’re skiing with people and it just feels natural.”

That’s what skiing like a local means at a remote ski lodge in Canada’s Last Frontier. Not knowing the mountain. Knowing the people you’re on it with. Having inside jokes from day two that still land on day six. Walking into dinner and knowing exactly where you’ll sit.

Early in the month, we had to navigate above-seasonal temps and stubborn valley fog, but our tree skiing came to the rescue to keep the laps coming. As we transitioned into the second week, winter returned with a vengeance – the temperatures dropped, and the snow kept piling up. That deep chill held strong through mid-February, rewarding us with some outstanding skiing – as good as it gets.. Late February delivered too with groups smashing through almost 48,000 vertical meters on a five-day tour. As we round out the month, the snowpack is solid with 240cm of new snow since late January. Whether you’re up high in the alpine or charging through the glades, the skiing is awesome right now.

After receiving upwards of 2 meters of snow in early January, the weather made an abrupt u-turn in mid-January. Clear skies and above seasonal temps have delivered almost spring-like conditions this week. Under clear skies we have been able to stretch out to the far reaches of our tenure and ski big lines that often don’t come into play until late-season. The current high pressure system is expected to break down by Sunday and we are looking forward to a healthy snow reset.

The numbers are in, and the snowpack is shaping up to be one of the strongest in recent memory. Following a precip-heavy November, a cold and snowy start to December has pushed our snow depths to levels usually reserved for late January.

The Numbers (as of Dec 10, 2025):

  • Ripley Creek Treeline Base: 238cm [94″] @ 1,028m in elevation [3,372′].
  • Bell 2 Treeline Base: 189cm [74″] @ 1,065m in elevation [3,494′].
  • Storm Totals (Dec 3–10): We saw 152cm [60″] of new snow land west of Stewart and 75cm [30″] near Bell 2 in just seven days.

With our first groups arriving January 9, the stage is set for a deep start to the 2026 season.

Winter has arrived in Northern British Columbia. Ahead of our 2026 heliski season, which starts up in early January, Last Frontier Heliskiing is excited to report:

  • Alpine Snow Base: We have an alpine base that exceeds 150 cm (59 inches) at 1,372 meters (approximately 4,500 feet) of elevation, with larger accumulation higher up in the mountains.
  • Valley Floor Coverage: Snow is currently holding down to the valley bottom at Bell 2 Lodge, which sits at an elevation of 550 meters (approximately 1,804 feet).
  • The Forecast: The current forecast suggests cooler temperatures and additional snowfall. This is ideal for consolidating the base we have and building towards a snowbase that will allow us to ski runs into our valley bottoms.

The journey to our heli ski lodges is simple and pointed north. All guests fly into Vancouver, BC (YVR). From there, you’ll take a 1.5-hour flight to Terrace, BC – your gateway to Bell 2 Lodge and Ripley Creek.

Our team greets you in Terrace, where the journey begins. Your included ground transfer is a four-hour drive that leaves the everyday behind, pushing deep into the heart of the Coast and Skeena Mountains. You’ll feel like you’ve arrived at the edge of the map—and that’s precisely the point.

Bell 2 Lodge: The Purpose-Built Heli Village

Bell 2 Lodge offers direct access to some of the best alpine heliskiing terrain in British Columbia. Located in the heart of the Skeena Mountains, this self-contained heliski village is a top destination for heliskiing in Northern BC.
