Depuis quelque temps j'ai envie de faire un petit voyage à pied, direction les pays basques. Mais ce que compte n'est pas le but, mais le voyage en lui même.
Donc je vais sérieusement commencer à me préparer, le printemps va arriver et je vais me remettre au footing et la marche forcée afin d'être en forme pour ce petit voyage.

L'idée n'est pas seulement de me changer les idée, mais aussi de vivre une petite expérience un peu hors du commun (au moins pour moi), une petite aventure en pleine nature, équipé qu'avec le nécessaire.

Un aperçu de mon plan :

Un grand sac-à-dos, un bon sac de couchage, un appareil photo, de quoi écrire dans un carnet de voyage, des vêtements de rechange et de quoi manger (ce sera le plus intéressant à rechercher).

Je verrais bien jusqu'où je peux y aller...

For a while now I have the wish to go on a trip by foot, direction the Basque country. But what counts is not the destination - it's the journey by itself.
So I'll start to prepare myself seriously, spring is coming and I'll start again with my footing and marching programm to get ready for that little journey.

The idea is not only to clear my mind, but to live a little experience out of the ordinary (at least for myself), a small adventure in the nature, equiped only with the necessary.

An insight of my plan:

A big backpack, a good sleepingbag, a camera, something to write into a travel log, change of clothes and food (that would be the most interesting to figure out).

I'll see how far I'll go...

Fluxbox on Archlinux [EN]

I went back to my first love when I did my first steps on Linux: Fluxbox.

How comes?

I'm spoiled by Unity, I really like it a lot, but getting it working on Archlinux is - pardon my french - a pain in the ars. I tried multiple times (with or without helper scripts) but the result was far from what I wanted.
Razor-Qt looks promising, but is not there yet. Xfwm looks light-weight, but feels not quite right for me (don't ask, I can't explain it).
Only the Cinnamon installation was going well and I used it almost since my Archlinux installation. But why using a heavy DE which needs ages to load after a bootup of a couple of seconds?
I tried OpenBox, but the whole panel-thing wasn't satisfying (tint2, ADW, Docky, name it!). Then I remembered when I started seriously on Linux, I used Fluxbox on my Slackware installation with great satisfaction.

What's the actual state?

The install itself is as fast as typing pacman -S fluxbox. Now to get it to be as I wish for is another task entirely, but as always: Google is your friend; and when you look closely on the results, the most of them point always back to the Archlinux wiki (way to go, Archlinux community!).

To setup my Fluxbox, first thing I did after the installation was to install and execute arandr for my dual screen layout and copied the resulting shell script content into the Fluxbox startup. After that I let menumaker (mmaker -f Fluxbox) run as well and to update the Fluxbox menu. Furthermore I replaced fbrun (Alt-F2) with gmrun and installed and added to the startup file the gnome notification daemon (I like on-screen messages).

For my media keys on my keyboard - and for pulseaudio - I found a handy ruby script here: https://gist.github.com/1791270 and so I added it to my keys file as well - now I just need to work something out to show the volume level in an on-screen message...

For a clean and lean visual I kept Adwaita from Cinnamon and added the Intuition theme for Fluxbox.

Arch Linux [EN]

OK, after so many years of eyeing on +Arch Linux I finally did it, I installed it on my workstation!

Preparation

While still running on Ubuntu, I run some installations of Arch Linux in VirtualBox, just to familiarize myself with the process, and I can affirm what everybody else says, the Arch Linux Wiki is a goldmine of information!

And at the same time I thought about how I prepare my machine for it, what filesystem, bootloader and partition table I want to use as the base for the installation. I searched for articles comparing each and everything until I got all information I needed to make a decision.

Unfortunately one can't (at least to my humble knowledge) simulate a RAID 0 setup in VirtualBox, so this was one unknown factor for the installation process. I had to jump in the cold water :-).

After spending a night with backing up my data locally on an external HDD, I was ready.

Installation

My choices were: GPT, Syslinux and EXT4. Alone to get my workstation to boot into my installation, it took me one day. Because I tried to partition my RAID 0 with the GParted Live CD. I should have done it directly with the Arch Install CD! The installation itself worked like a charm. Thanks again to the wiki!

It was a satisfying moment when my workstation booted finally into Arch Linux.

Customization

Next step was to check everything related to my hardware, all options I can use to speed up my workstation. I fine-tuned the nouveau settings, installed the Cinnamon DE and all necessary software for my work (java, skype, chromium, firefox, etc). Needs a while to get used to Cinnamon though, after so long with Unity.

It is so much fun to install software with Arch Linux; I still need to get used to do the daily upgrades.

What's next?

Now I need to learn more about the internal working of my system, maybe switch my DE to OpenBox in the near future. The installation was just the first step, the real exploration starts now :-).

Install CyanogenMod 7 on HTC Wildfire (buzz - HBOOT 1.01.0002) with Linux [EN]

You have a HTC Wildfire with HBOOT 1.01.0002?
You want to get the latest CyanogenMod 7 (CM7) on your phone?
You're using Linux and don't have any Windows installation?

Then let's get started!

Disclaimer: First things first; you're about to void your warranty with those next steps; even though many have succeeded in installing CM7, there's still a possibility that you may brick your phone. I'm simply providing the information about how I did it, so you can do it on your own responsibility!

Those steps were done on Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 1, and only the USB cable for the HTC Wildfire (as I don't have an adapter for the micro sd-card).

Downloading some needed stuff

Now some links for downloading the software which is needed to S-OFF the phone (done through downgrading the ROM to HTC Froyo WWE), installing the recovery ROM and finally flashing CM7:

Open up a Terminal and keep it open, you'll need it for a while.

Install the Android SDK with the instructions on the website. Once installed, you should - for simpleness sake - do the following in the Terminal:
PATH=$PATH:/home/your_user_name/sdk_install_folder/platform-tools/

This allows you to execute the adb without having to indicate the full path.

And while on it, decompress the buzzdowngrade.tar.gz to a folder of your choice.

Before we go any further, plug your phone to your PC and save the content of your sd-card, when you didn't use your Google account to save your contacts - well, then find a way to save your contacts otherwise. You can always use paper and a pen ;-).

Create a GoldCard

To get the rest working, this part is important as it will decide if you have the right sd-card or not. For my HTC Wildfire I tried the one I already had in it and failed, but I still had my other sd-card from my HTC Tattoo, and it worked once more.

In the Terminal create a file so your phone gets detected by your system:
$ sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules

with the following content:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"

Save the file and attribute the correct rights on it:
$ sudo chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules

Put your HTC Wildfire into USB Debugging mode in "Menu > Settings > Applications > Development" and change your USB connection type to charge only.

Let us see if everything is right until now in the Terminal:
$ adb start-server
$ adb devices

If you get an output something similar to this:
List of devices attached
HTxAxLGxxxxx device
then you're ready to proceed!

Downgrading the ROM

Back into the Terminal, go into your buzzdowngrade folder and do the following steps:
$ adb push dmisc.img /data/local/
$ adb push flash_image /data/local/
$ adb push psneuter /data/local/

$ adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/psneuter
$ adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/flash_image

$ adb shell /data/local/psneuter

That will reboot your HTC Wildfire. Now we downgrade MISC:
$ adb start-server
$ adb shell /data/local/flash_image misc /data/local/dmisc.img

We need now the CID of the sd-card:
$ adb shell "cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid"

The output should look like 532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402, copy that code, open a new browser-tab and go to Soaa's HEX Reverser, paste your code and hit submit. Again, copy the resulting code and open another tab (or in the same) and go to RevSkills free HTC goldcard generator, paste the hexcode you just copied and download your goldcard.img.

Get the sd-card from your phone and put it in your card reader:
$ sudo dd bs=512 if=/path_to/goldcard.img of=/dev/sdx1
(I did set my phone in "Mass Storage" mode, mounted it and did it over the USB cable)

You can check the dmesg output or df to find out where your sd-card is mounted. Once done, put the sd-card back into the HTC Wildfire and start it up.

When started, let us continue:
$ adb start-server
$ adb shell sync
$ adb reboot bootloader

Your phone will reboot now, just wait until your in the bootloader still in your buzzdowngrade folder:
$ ./fastboot erase cache
$ ./fastboot oem rebootRUU

Your phone's screen will show now the HTC logo, now we will downgrade it:
$ ./fastboot flash zip rom.zip

Now if you get a "Customer ID" error while doing this, your goldcard is not working, get another sd-card (another manufacturer) and go back where you retrieved the CID for the first one and repeat the steps once more.

Else you'll see many lines in the Terminal, and a status bar on your phone.

When finished, do:
$ ./fastboot reboot-bootloader

Now check on your phone if your HBOOT version is 1.01.0001 (on top of the screen), if so, we're ready for the next step. Shut down your phone for now.

S-OFF your phone

Open a browser-tab and go to Revolutionary's website scroll down and click on the Linux download link - now this is important: clicking the link will open a form which will allow you to generate a beta key which you'll need to proceed!

The form will ask you for the serial number of your HTC Wildfire, so open it, remove the battery and look inside for S/N :HTXXETDXXXXX. Fill in the form and generate your key.

Start up your phone (mine took almost 5 minutes to start, so don't be scared if it takes a while), skip the "First Run" installation routine wherever possible - as you won't keep it long enough on this ROM.
Put your phone again into USB Debugging mode (like shown above).

Go to the folder where you just stored the downloaded file and extract it, go into it and then execute it:
$ ./revolutionary

When asked, copy & paste your beta key you've got from the Revolutionary's website, and when it asks if it should download and install ClockworkMods Recovery ROM, confirm it!

Update your phone to CM7

Reboot your phone. And in the meantime let's go to CyanogenMod's website and get the latest stable CM7; you should as well get the Google Apps ROM.

Transfer the two files to your phone sd-card root folder - in the Terminal:
$ adb start-server
$ adb push cm-7.2.0-buzz.zip /mnt/sdcard/
$ adb push gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip /mnt/sdcard/

When finished, we'll reboot it into the recovery mode:
$ adb reboot recovery

Once in the recovery mode, select the option Wipe data/factory reset. Then select the option Wipe cache partition. Select now Install zip from sdcard and on the following screen Choose zip from sdcard. Find the cm-7.2.0-buzz.zip and confirm. Repeat the last two steps for gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip.

Select now Go Back and reboot your phone. You're done!

Have fun with your HTC Wildfire running Android Gingerbread!

Être charmant, plein de fraîcheur et de finesse, le Bouc de Terre n'en est pas moins un personnage à problèmes. Pour atteindre le bonheur, il lui faudra surmonter un certain nombre d'obstacles inhérents à sa nature.
Ce Bouc est timide, et sa timidité débilitante lui joue souvent des tours. Il ne se sent à l'aise que dans le cercle restreint de sa famille et de ses meilleurs amis. Une fois hors de ce cercle, il est comme un poisson hors de l'eau. Sa parole est difficile, ses gestes indécis et gauches. Intelligent, il peut avoir des idées géniales, des répliques brillantes; mais tout ne se fait que dans son fort intérieur ou vient trop tard pour produire d'heureux effets et, par conséquent, ce Bouc ne sait pas se faire apprécier à sa juste valeur. Il est donc inapte aux métiers de représentant de commerce ou de diplomate, et en général à tous les métiers où l'aisance est de rigueur. Combien de chances et d'occasions il a pu rater à cause de sa timidité (tellement vrai!)! Publilius Syrus avait raison d'affirmer que "la timidité n'a jamais mené au premier rang". Sur le plan sentimental, la timidité est aussi un désavantage sinon un défaut. "La timidité est la prison du cœur", dit un proverbe espagnol. Pour se guérir de son infirmité - car la timidité est une infirmité -, le natif a intérêt à mobiliser toutes ses énergies et à utiliser tous les moyens à sa disposition. Il doit surtout "foncer dans le tas", c'est-à-dire faire exactement ce qu'il a peur de faire. Il doit, par exemple, aller voir la personne qui lui inspire le plus de crainte, prendre la parole aux réunions qui jusque-là le paralysent, et surtout entretenir des contacts avec des personnes de l'autre sexe. Le Bouc de Terre a tendance à se faire entretenir par les autres, les exploitant avec plus ou moins de scrupule et de délicatesse. Poli et plein de charme, il y arrive sans peine, et les gens sont heureux de l'obliger. Le danger réside dans le fait qu'il risque de s'installer à la longue dans la paresse et le parasitisme (heu...). Or, lorsqu'une personne n'apporte plus sa contribution et devient inutile à la société, son bonheur est compromis, car la société ne tolère pas les parasites. Le mot français "idiot" vient du grec idiotes qui désigne toute personne non productive et donc indésirable pour la collectivité (oh, ça va!).
D'autre part, le natif court le risque de se faire exploiter par des gens sans scrupule. Gentil et naïf, il se laisse facilement aller à des largesses injustifiées et injustifiables. Il doit surtout limiter au strict nécessaire ces généreuses réceptions qu'il aime donner même à ses plus lointaines connaissances au grand détriment de son budget. Il ne doit pas non plus utiliser le moindre prétexte pour offrir une tournée à tout le monde dans un bar (je croix que j'arrive déjà à éviter cela).
Ce qui rend le Bouc de Terre touchant, ce sont ses qualités de cœur. Il en a plus que tous ses frères du signe. C'est pourquoi il connaît rarement la tristesse et supporte bien ses malheurs. Lao-Tseu n'a-t-il pas dit: "Quand le ciel veut sauver un homme, Il lui donne l'affection pour le protéger"? En d'autres termes à celui qui est doué d'affection comme ce Bouc, le Ciel procure l'appui et la protection de tous. C'est le cœur du Bouc de Terre qui fait sa richesse et le comble de joie. Il doit faire tout son possible pour empêcher son cœur de jamais se dessécher; la tâche ne sera pas très facile, mais elle est indispensable au bonheur du natif.

Ça fait plaisir d'avoir des demandes d'intervention des sociétés non-connu de notre part afin de régler des soucis avec leur installation Concrete 5. On peut vraiment dire que nous nous sommes distingué comme des experts dans les installations de Concrete 5 et de la création d'extensions de ce dernier.

Concrete 5 est vraiment un CMS qui évolue dans la bonne direction (même si je changerait plusieurs choses à leur place), et ça fait vraiment plaisir de travailler avec, de construire au-dessus la base et de l'étendre à nos besoins et les besoins de nos clients.

Bon, afin d'être lisible par la plupart de mes amis, j'essai désormais de publier en 3 langues, avec le français en premier et suivi par l'anglais et l'allemand.

Ok, in order to be readable by most of my friends I will try to post from now on in 3 languages, with french as the first and followed by english and german.

Found after 17 years!

Back in '95, a buddy of mine copied a tape for me with a great rave mix, but as it is with copied tapes, the quality was rather bad. Nevertheless I was struck by a part of the mix I heard over and over.

Now how could I get a better quality of it?

Since I had access to the Internet I was looking for that mix, I even asked on several websites like last.fm some years ago (with a poorly recorded digital copy from that tape put online).

But today I finally found it!

All began with Digitally Imported radio a couple days ago when they played a track from that same time (Steve Baltes - Naked Brunch, a track I was also looking for). Over at discogs.com I found the compilation CD I had at that time with that track and so I searched on youtube.com for the other tracks from that compilation. And there is another track (Angel Heart - Far far away) I instantly remembered to be just before my favorite part of the mix I was looking for.

Thanks again to discogs.com I was able to find the mix after 17 years:

Back to the "roots"

And back again to Ubuntu. I don't know why, but I always come back to Ubuntu.

After 3 months on openSUSE I got once more a confirmation that RPM based distributions aren't for me. I just don't like them - or I'm way too spoiled with DEB based distributions.

So I switched to LMDE and fulfilled a long-time wish to install a rolling release Debian Testing. But unfortunately the testing has sometimes bugs, and it gave me from time to time the impression, that even if I love to live on the edge with my PC, I should stick with something more ... proven ... stable ... familiar.

So this time I chose PinguyOS, build on top of Linux Mint and Ubuntu with a heavy load of PPAs and much software pre-installed.

First thing I had to do was to deactivate some PPAs, de-install some Thunderbird plug-ins and ready I was.

I'm always coming back to Ubuntu, no matter how many other distributions I try out, nothing gives me as much satisfaction as an Ubuntu based one.

It's only too bad that the ElementaryOS release I'm waiting for will be based on the next LTS (12.04) release of Ubuntu. Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea to release a stable version, but the waiting sucks...

Until then I hope I will be wise enough to be patient and wait.

Installer Android 2.2 sur HTC Tattoo Orange (fr) sous Linux

Préface

HTC a promis debut 2010 une mise à jour pour Android 2.1 pour le HTC Tattoo, mais de plus en plus il y a des messages dans les forums divers, que HTC ne compte pas à faire une mise à jour de Android 1.6 (version actuel sur les derniers Tattoos). Mécontent de cet attitude envers les proprietaires d'un HTC Tattoo, j'ai décidé d'installer un micrologiciel customisé (basé sur Android 2.2) sur mon Tattoo.

Après plusieurs heures de recherches (surtout sur le forum de xda-developers.com) et plusieurs tentatives, voici les démarches à faire.

Attention : vous faites des modifications importantes sur votre mobile, je ne suis pas responsable si vous cassez votre mobile (normalement tout est réparable).

Ceci a été effectué sous openSUSE 11.3.

Installer le Android SDK et connecter le Tattoo

D'abord il faut se procurer du SDK pour Android ici : http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html.

Ensuite extraire l'archive téléchargé dans un dossier facile à atteindre (/home/marc-andre/Android-SDK dans mon cas) et pour faciliter les tâches suivantes, mettre à jour les chemins :

PATH=$PATH:/home/marc-andre/Android-SDK/tools

Mettez votre Tattoo en mode débogage USB : Paramètres -> Applications -> Développement -> Débogage USB et connectez votre Tattoo avec le câble USB à l'ordinateur.

Maintenant taper les commandes suivantes :

adb start-server
adb devices

Si vous-avez un résultat comme ceci :

vous êtes bon pour la suite.

Créer la GoldCard

Pour forcer le Tattoo à accepter nos actions, il faut créer une goldcard, donc une carte MicroSD modifié. Une GoldCard permet de simuler un CID d'un HTC nu.

Tapez la commade suivante :

adb shell "cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid"

(Attention : avec les guillemets !)

Copiez le code hexadécimal affiché (ça ressemble à ça : 532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402) et allez sur http://hexrev.soaa.me/, coller le code dans le champs et soumettez le.

Copiez ensuite le nouveau code et allez ici : http://psas.revskills.de/?q=goldcard.

Remplissez le formulaire avec votre adresse mail valide (vous recevez la GoldCard sur cette adresse mail) et collez le code copié précédemment, passer le test anti-spam et envoyez le formulaire.

Faites une sauvegarde de votre MicroSD sur votre ordianteur (il faut imperativement brancher la carte sur votre ordinateur - avec un lecteur de carte par example). Puis formatez la carte en VFAT (FAT32).

Si vous avez reçu votre GoldCard par mail, on peut continuer par la commande suivante (Attention, indiquez les bons chemins vers goldcard.img et votre carte SD !) :

sudo dd bs=512 if=~/goldcard.img of=/dev/sdc1 #dans mon cas

Remettez la carte dans votre Tattoo puis démarrez le.

Forcer le root sur Tattoo

Pour pouvoir continuer, il nous faut l'accès du superutilisateur. Hélas, sous le micrologiciel de HTC, on peut pas avoir par défaut accès en root. Il faut qu'on utilise une faille dans le noyau fourni par HTC (et depuis la connaissance de cette faille, celle-ci n'a pas été corrigé - tant mieux pour nous).

Téléchargez mon archive http://www.mediafire.com/?md0icohcexd5zv8 et décompressez-le dans un dossier facile a retenir (/home/marc-andre/assets dans mon cas).

Maintenant on va copier un petit logiciel sur le Tattoo pour exploiter cette faille et qui nous permet d'avoir l'accès en mode superutilisateur, pour cela faites :

adb shell "mkdir /data/local/bin" #s'il y a une message d'erreur que le dossier existe, c'est bon
adb push /home/marc-andre/assets/exploit-m7/m7 /data/local/bin/m7 #comme toujours mon cas
adb push /home/marc-andre/assets/flash_image /data/local/bin/flash_image
adb push /home/marc-andre/assets/su /data/local/bin/su
adb push /home/marc-andre/assets/tattoo-hack/tattoo-hack.ko /data/local/bin/tattoo-hack.ko
adb push /home/marc-andre/assets/boot.img /data/local/bin/boot.img

Et maintenant il faut aller dans la console et exécuter m7 :

Il y a certainement plusieurs lignes qui défilent, c'est tout a fait normale, et à la fin vous avez un '#' (il se peut qu'il faut d'abord appuyer sur Entrée pour faire un saut à la ligne). Nous avons accès en mode superutilisateur ! Pour vérifier si c'est le cas, tapez :

# export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/system/lib
# export PATH=/system/bin
# id

Si vous-avez l'affiche suivante :

uid=0(root) gid=1000(shell) groups=1003(graphics),1004(input),1007(log),1011(adb),1015(sdcard_rw),3001(net_bt_admin),3002(net_bt),3003(inet)

ça veut dire que c'est bon (notez le 'root').

Pour que ça reste comme ça (et encore plus), il faut passer à l'étape suivante.

Installation de 'su' et nouveau bootloader

Toujours dans la console du Tattoo tapez :

# chown root.root /data/local/bin/su
# chmod 4755 /data/local/bin/su
# insmod /data/local/bin/tattoo-hack.ko
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock5 /data
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# mv /data/local/bin/su /system/bin/su

(Si vous recevez un erreur pour le tattoo-hack.ko, essayez l'autre dans le dossier tattoo-hack-g6561203)

Ouvrez maintenant une autre console Linux, et essayez si 'su' vous donne accès en mode superutilisateur :

adb shell
$ /data/local/bin/su

Si vous avez un '#', c'est bon.

Et avant tout, on installe le nouveau bootloader :

# chown root.root /data/local/bin/flash_image
# /data/local/bin/flash_image boot /data/local/bin/boot.img

Une fois achève, redémarrez votre Tattoo avec :

# reboot

Remplacer le mode recovery

Une fois votre Tattoo est redémarré, retournez dans la console du Tattoo, et normalement vous êtes déjà superutilisateur :

adb shell
# /data/local/bin/flash_image recovery /data/local/bin/recovery-tattoo.bin

puis

# reboot recovery

Dès que votre Tattoo est en mode recovery, par la console faites :

adb shell
# /sbin/bart -a -b -c --norecovery

pour faire une sauvegarde de votre installation et redemarrez votre Tattoo :

# reboot

Flasher le nouveau ROM sur le Tattoo

Après la sauvegarde, il nous reste que de choisir le ROM à installer. Moi pour ma part, j'ai choisi "fyodor FroYo AOSP Tattoo v0.7.2c" (faites un tour sur http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=544 pour regarder les pour et contres de tous les ROMs).

Copiez d'abord le fichier update.zip (ou le ROM de votre choix renommé en update.zip) sur la carte SD :

adb push /home/marc-andre/assets/update.zip /sdcard/update.zip
adb shell reboot recovery

Quand votre Tattoo est de nouveau dans le recovery, videz d'abord le cache Dalvik et Data. Et ensuite choisissez Flash update.zip. L'installation du nouveau ROM est en route.

Après l'installation, redémarrez votre Tattoo et voilà, vous êtes partie sous Android 2.2 !

Par contre il manque les Google Apps, vous les trouvez ici : http://goo.gl/oetkQ.

Dans la console :

adb push gapps-mdoi-20101020-signed.zip /sdcard/gapps.zip
adb shell reboot recovery

et dans le mode recovery juste flasher le ZIP de la carte SD.

Épilogue

Pour passer mon Tattoo sous Android 2.2 il m'as fallu 2 jours. J'ai écrit ce tutoriel de mémoire et avec l'historique de mon navigateur pour retrouver mon chemin. En plus je ne suis pas trop doué pour écrire des tutoriaux, vous m'excusez.

Je ne suis pas sur s'il faut passer vraiment par toutes les étapes ci-dessus, mais ça peut pas faire de mal.

Mais si jamais vous rencontrez un problème, n'hésitez pas de laisser un commentaire pour que je peut mettre à jour mon tutoriel avec la partie manquant / fausse.

Kubuntu 10.10 ditched in favor of openSUSE 11.3

Enough is enough...

After a change to Ubuntu 10.04 in begin of June, I switched back to Kubuntu 10.04 in September due to a buggy Gnome (for example this long-known bug with copy & past not working after you close the software of origin) and other reasons. But Kubuntu didn't look nice either, and felt as well unstable and slow. I nevertheless waited for 10.10 to come out and to do an upgrade, but it just got worse. The software I need for my work didn't function as expected (take Skype for example).

Research

I did some research about opinions from others for a stable workstation Linux. The main contestants were Red Hat or SLED. Fedora, the offspring of Red Hat is cutting etch and therefor object to possible breaks in software. Nothing I can use. So I installed openSUSE in VirtualBox and gave it a tryout. The first impression was more then good, the difference between Kubuntu and it are big.

It's done...

So I ditched this week my Kubuntu 10.10 installation for openSUSE 11.3.
But what i missed straight away was dash (the bash replacement under Ubuntu), it will take some time, but I will get used to it.
What else struggled me was the RPM package management system. It is far from as smooth as the Debian packaging system; mostly I had problems with dependency resolution - or I just do not know yet how to use it correctly. And when talking about the packaging system, I was (and am) quiet confused with the repositories under openSUSE. So what I appreciated much, the first moment I knew about it, is the package search on software.opensuse.org, so no need to search a long time for a certain package in some lost repository (or a PPA for Ubuntu).

It feels good

For now I can feel more stability and cohesion in openSUSE then I felt in Kubuntu for a long time. My Skype worked straight out the box, I got Sun/Oracle Java and VirtualBox installed and can code right away without having the impression that my workstation is an old 486.

Just on my servers I will hold on to Ubuntu, I cannot afford it to have downtime on them just because I messed something up as long as I am not familiar to zypper...

PS: My favorite game OpenTTD did install completely with the necessary content and works great !

My *NIX history

1995 - 1996
First time I got in touch with *NIX was with FreeBSD back in 1995, when it was featured in a PC magazine (I do not remember which one it was). Back then I was young and just attracted by the idea of a different OS, other then Windows 3.11/DOS. But you can imagine that - as a Windows 3.11 user - it was something I couldn't possibly understand nor use.

1997 - 1999
In 1997 I got in touch with Corel Linux, tried it on my PC but still didn't got the idea about incompatibility between Microsoft products and Linux, so I dumped it fast as I couldn't do anything with it. And while in my civil service, a student showed me SuSE Linux on his PC; but my previous experience with Corel Linux kept me on distance.

2000 - 2003
Back in 1999 I got an old IBM laptop and had already 2 PCs with Windows installed. And I had a RedHat Distribution on hand, so I gave Linux another try.
I liked it, and - as I wasn't depending on my laptop as my sole PC - kept it installed. I got in touch with other Linux users on IRC and at this time (like it is still the case today), working in the console was cool.
After some weeks I replaced RedHat with Slackware, because I wanted something "hard" to work with. I managed to get wireless and sound working on my old laptop. The console was my home for a long time, with ncurses there were so many applications perfectly running in it. The same time, when I worked with a fellow webdesigner, we used a SuSE Linux server. I liked very much Yast to keep control over the system.
To keep trying something different, in 2002 I replaced on one of my PCs Windows with BeOS (not quiet a *NIX). It was a nice OS, but unfortunately without a future.

2005 - present
As my life got a bit turbulent in 2004, I did not have any PC until 2005 when I bought a Toshiba Laptop. And at first I started with Fedora. And as usual, I couldn't stay with it and wanted again something different, and so I found Ubuntu.
It should be the beginning of a long relation as my favourite Linux distribution.

Over the last couple of years I tried other OS as well, like MirOS and other BSD derivatives, Solaris, Darwin and countless Linux distributions (thank you dual-boot and VirtualBox).

On the server-side I used for about a year Gentoo, but changed afterwards to Ubuntu Server, because that way I have the same tool-set as on my workstation (~~call me lazy~~).

Since I work as a developer for Sudimage (4 years now), I only used the KDE-based Kubuntu, but recently i switched to Ubuntu with Gnome.

Future
Now I keep a closer look on the Elementary OS as my future OS.

PrestaShop vs. Magento CE

After a half year with PrestaShop as our proposed solution for e-commerce websites, and another half year with Magento CE as our 'new' solution, here is a small review from our experience :

PrestaShop

+ Pro :

Easy installation
Easy to modify (making changes to the behaviour without affecting the core files)
Good template system (Smarty)
Fast response-time from the community

- Contra :

Buggy (core AND modules)
Limited for extended needs
Toy-like interface
Rare updates and almost no bug-fixes

Our first impression was, that PrestaShop could fast and easily replace our in-house solution for e-commerce. With the small core and the logical framework of PrestaShop, it was easy to install our customers websites.
But already after a short while we got more and more costumers dissatisfied with the look and feel of the back-office, and we got more and more bug reports as well. The only answers to those bugs were workarounds with other modules to circumvent the problems. This is unacceptable for our clients and puts us into a bad light.

So we were looking for an alternative.

Magento CE

+ Pro :

Stable core (based on Zend Framework)
Very broad base of functions included, almost no limits for extensions
Professional looking Front and Back-office
Many extensions available with an easy upgrade function (Magento Connect)

- Contra :

Installation can be tricky, moving an installation is very hard
Modifications are difficulty to realise for newcomers
Templates are not easily to maintain, you need to know the way how Magento CE works to know where you have to modify what .phtml file
The responsiveness of the community forum is almost inexistant

After our switch to Magento CE I can confirm, that modifying a base installation of it is time consuming when you are new to it. At first sight all those XML configuration scripts may be scaring, but after a while you get to know where you will find the file you need to figure something out or to modify it.
As with PrestaShop, modifications are not done on the core files, but as extended classes to the MVC, or in creating a cascading folder tree to rewrite template files.

What did we learn

PrestaShop may be great for DIY users, but for us it is not something we can install for our clients. It is fast deployed and easily adapted to the design you wish for it. But the limitations you have - even if you could extend it - are a no-go. Someone who has the time to extend it to his needs, that is great, but in our business : time is money. That applies as well on the bug-hunting in PrestaShop installations, and more on the waiting for bug-fixes from the project.
Magento CE is a hard one at first, but after 3 - 4 installations and modifications of the base system, you get to know it. A negative side is, that you have to search a long time if you have questions, but when you find what you are looking for, you can be sure it is well documented. Just be sure to look for the right version of Magento.

Magento CE is for us the way to go !

PS : If I need to write a non-common extension to Magento CE, I will try to write a how-to. Maybe one of you can use it later.

After 4 years on KDE, back to Gnome

First a little introduction :

I am a proud long-time Linux user. First I started with Slackware (back in '99) on my IBM Laptop and I succeeded to accomplish many things, like getting my wireless working. But I was a purist on Linux; since I had 3 other PCs with Windows installed. After a long break on PCs, in 2004 I got my hands on a Toshiba Laptop and installed Fedora on it but had some issues and so I switched to Ubuntu. The Gnome DE was something "new" and exiting for me. But then came another break on PCs until fall 2005, where I build a shiny new PC just for me.

I gave Kubuntu a try. It was great, finally a DE where I could go on my servers with Konqueror, as if they where folders on my PC. And the all in all working great together of the applications was refreshing. I changed to Gentoo, Sabayon, Mint - always with KDE - but came always back to Kubuntu.

But with the release of KDE 4, the great deception overcome me as well as so many others. Because I am someone who likes his habits and does not like to change, I wanted to give KDE 4 a try, even if I could have stayed with 3.5 (but it is in all cases a dead end in favour of the new release).
Before the release I had many expectations on KDE 4; I wanted to have the same working horse, just with a new blanket. The first release was buggy, of course - there is no problem with it, they start something new from scratch, I waited for the 4.1. Lesser bugs, but also lesser similarities to the old version I was used to. True, they did go a big step to push forward new techniques, but I never got used to Dolphin as the filemanager, to take an example. And the change back to Konqueror in KDE 4 was not the same anymore. I could feel it in my daily use (and believe me, I use the filemanager quiet often), that they "ditched" Konqueror in favour of Dolphin.

Many may say that I can do many things in the configuration, etc. But I just do not have the time (else I would go back to Slackware or Gentoo). What I love most today is the fact, that - thanks to the big distributions - Linux got mainstream. Ease of use is the key.

So I had less and lesser pleasure working on KDE, and more and more details came to my attention. Some minor glitches in the design of the task-bar, the whole DE was sluggish and "heavy". I do not know how to put it in words.
The fact is, I installed the Beta of Ubuntu 10.04 in VirtualBox to see how Gnome looks like this days. What caught my eyes first was the integration of social networks and IM into Gnome. That was something I did not know I wanted.
And I took also a sneak-peak on Gnome 3 - what seems very promising - to see what the future looks like. Still on my old workstation I changed via tasksel to the Gnome DE and had straight the impression I expected from the VirtualBox experience.

So I took my decision to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my next PC (which arrived last Monday, a Dell Precision T1500).

I have to admit, I still need time to get used to Gnome, but I do not regret the switch to it. I will nevertheless keep an eye on KDE, to see how it will evolve in the near future.

Concrete 5 : Ajouter un logo du type de ficher au "Bloc Images" [TinyHowTo]

Un petit tutoriel pour ajouter un sélecteur CSS au bloc d'images de l'installation de base de Concrete 5.4 :

Le but est celle-ci :

D'abord il faut créer le dossier 'file' dans le dossier /blocks à la racine de Concrete5. Ensuite copier les fichiers 'view.php' et 'controller.php' dans ce nouveau dossier.

Ouvre le fichier 'controller.php' et ajout la fonction suivant à la fin de la classe :

Concrete 5 : Add a filetype-logo to the "File-Block" [TinyHowTo]

A small how-to add a CSS selector to the File-block in the Concrete 5.4 base install :

The Goal

When linking to a file for download, a nice way to brush up the presentation of the link is to display the file-type icon alongside it. This gives the site visitor an idea as to what they are downloading, and makes the link stand out a bit more within the page:

By default, concrete5's file block simply displays a link to the file, without any icon. But adding this icon can be easily done with some quick modifications to the file block's view.php and controller.php files.

Override the File Block's View Template and Controller

First you have to create the folder 'file' in the blocks folder in your concrete5 root. Then copy the files 'view.php' and 'controller.php' from the /concrete/blocks/file/ folder in your newly created one. This will allow you to make changes to these two templates without affecting the core files.

Modify the Controller

Open the controller.php and add the following function to the end of the class :

Modify the View

Now open the view.php and change the line 7 (the HTML link) to :

Sudimage goes Open Source

A month ago we decided to step away from our own proprietory software to Open Source.

Logitoo gave us an inside into the needs of an working production infrastructure which we didn't had. As the sole developper at Sudimage, i couldn't head up with the demands from our clients and the updates to Logitoo.
We looked into some open CMS systems and which could be used to replace our unstable workinghorse, so we took Concrete5 as the CMS system and Prestashop as the e-commerce system.

Now we build on those 2 systems and contribute to the community with feedback and modules we build for our demands.

Upgrade of infrastructure | Mise à niveau de l'infrastructure

Our server infrastructure is updated. We needed to extend our server cluster with another server and in the upgrade I learned that i need to upgrade our database system as well.
So I installed a database cluster as well.

Next step is to upgrade the database cluster with another server and to activate the mail server cluster as well.

Notre infrastructure Internet est désormais à jour. Nous avons rajouté un serveur supplémentaire dans la grappe de serveurs pour mieux gérer les demandes, et dans le processus je me suis aperçu qu'il faut aussi mettre à jour notre système des bases des données. Donc j'ai installé une grappe de serveurs pour les bases des données.

La prochaine étape sera de mettre à jour la grappe de serveurs de bases des données en rajoutant un serveur supplémentaire et puis mettre en place une grappe de serveurs email.

Back in business

After a short vacation the development on Logitoo continues.
With all those new demands on functions for our software, it becomes more and more a software with a stable future.

The e-commerce part of Logitoo becomes more shape and the CMS part is now in a phase of development where I can be proud to say that it is on a way to become a powerful tool for our clients.

The version now is Logitoo 2.6 13032009beta, still on the road to success.

More and more pressure

Being the father of Logitoo 2 fills me with pride, but it is an demanding child though. The hardest part is to keep up with the demand for scaling and centralizing of so many new features to be included in it.

Time is something rather non-existent in our situation.

But with the forthcoming version 2.6 my initial goals becoming more and more shape. That's a good sign.

Ces dernières heures...

Notre serveur de production commence a montrer qu'il ne peut plus gérer se qu'on lui demande. Il y a déjà 2 mois, j'ai installé deux nouveaux serveurs email, quels sont presque prêts de prendre le relais. Je me suis régalé de optimiser celles-ci pour gérer mieux les spams et de nous faciliter la gestion des comptes email.

J'ai passé ces derniers jours avec l'installation de notre cluster web. Pas facile si on prend en considération, qu'il n'y a pas beaucoup de documentation sur le sujet Csync2, un logiciel libre permettant de synchroniser les données sur les serveurs.
Puis il y a le serveur MySQL qui agis comme maître pour les bdd installé dans le cluster.

Donc très bientôt, notre serveur de production "Sovereign", va aller en retraite...
