Most Anticipated Films Coming Up In 2012

As much as I would like to hope that most of these films will be released in Australia in 2012, I’m fairly certain that we will only be seeing perhaps half of them be distributed with the other half either filtering through festivals, to limited release or a DVD grave in 2013 (see Kelly Reichardt’s magnificent Meek’s Cutoff). However, that does not cease the anticipation that most of these films instil. Or at the very least a general curiosity. Therefore, the following list will be triple tiered and will include the illustrious highly anticipated (“Hook it to my veins!”), the films of generally positive promise (“I liked that dude’s last film”) and the films of fleeting intrigue (“Tightass Tuesdays”). If you have any films you are looking forward to in 2012, please don’t hesitate to comment and perhaps we may talk about them on the show (whoa). Here we go:

“Hook it to my veins!”

Looper (Dir. Rian Johnson)

From the director of Brick (a film I loved) and The Brothers Bloom (a film I wanted to see but never did), comes this sci-fi thriller set in a future where time travel exists but is illegal. The plot seems complex but in actual fact is quite straightforward, and I will basically just let the trailer do the talking. Will Joseph Gordon Levitt be a good Bruce Willis? What? Watch the trailer and get excited.

The Master (Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson)

Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood was the best film of 2007, and it has been that long since we have had to wait for the next instalment of this man’s so far flawless filmography. Not many directors working today tackle the larger sociological and cultural issues PTA manages to and always with energy, creativity and flair. The Master looks to be no different as he sets to address what seems to be the rise of Scientology (or secular cults in general) with Philip Seymour Hoffman and the return of Joaquin Phoenix. No trailer yet.

Prometheus (Dir. Ridley Scott)

As much as Ridley Scott has been churning out turds one after the other lately, one cannot help but get excited by the promise of the prequel to Alien, one of Scott’s masterpieces. Especially when it has such a stellar cast and is co-wrote by Lost writer Damon Lindelof. Plus, that trailer is incredibly well designed and the marketing campaign would have any sceptic reconsidering.

Cabin in the Woods (Dir. Drew Goddard)

Penned by Buffy/Angel/Firefly creator/nerd magnet Joss Whedon, this new horror film is getting plenty of buzz on the interwebs, particularly for its immense ability to be easily spoiled. Whedon excels at deconstructing genre, and the word is that Cabin in the Woods does just that and more.

Killing Them Softly (Dir. Andrew Dominik)

Australian director Andrew Dominik showed incredible stride after following up his gritty crime film Chopper with the highly underrated The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and now 5 years later I hope that he will continue down this path of refinement and improvement. Originally titled “Coogan’s Trade”, the film follows an enforcer that investigates a poker game heist. Not much info, but so much anticipation.

Django Unchained (Dir. Quentin Tarantino)

A new Quentin film is always an event, and one about a freed slave and his owner running around the south hunting plantation owners seems to fit the general mould. I wasn’t sure about Jamie Foxxxxx at first, but I’m sure he wouldn’t be cast if he wasn’t suited as one thing Tarantino usually gets right is askew casting choices. No trailer yet, but this poster is badass with a great Saul Bass minimalist flair to it.

Not Fade Away (Dir. David Chase)

Not too much info out there about this one yet, but Sopranos creator David Chase is making his debut feature about a group of Italian youths in the 1960s starting a band. Set in Jersey and re-teaming up with Sopranos star James Gandolfini, on the back of Chase’s work on the Sopranos, this one is one to look forward to.

The Dark Knight Rises (Dir. Christopher Nolan)

I don’t even really need to write anything here. If you weren’t a fan of The Dark Knight then you should check for a pulse. The recruitment of Tom Hardy as Bane and Joseph Gordon Levitt isn’t hurting anyone. The only skepticism comes from Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, but apart from that (and the hype) this is going to be an IMAX opening night kind of deal.

Lawless (Dir. John Hillcoat)

Whilst The Road was dreary, harrowing and ultimately slightly disappointing, I still have hope for Australian director John Hillcoat and his new film which has Tom Hardy dabbling in depression era bootlegging. No trailer or poster yet.

Cosmopolis (Dir. David Cronenberg)

Perhaps a return to the psychosexual body horror stuff Cronenberg produced before the fantastic A History of Violence, the trailer to Cosmopolis offers a glimpse at what may very well be just that. Staring the unlikely heart throb Robert Pattinson and based on the novel by Don DeLillo, this one harkens back to a sleazier, seedier side of Cronenberg, which as much as we deny it we all kind of want.

The Burial (Dir. Terrence Malick)

As if this wasn’t going to be on there. New film from Terrence Malick. Making up for his years in exile teaching philosophy or whatever the selfish bastard was doing, he is now set to release 3 new films in the next 2 years or so. This one will be first (or will it be his documentary Voyage of Time?), and it looks to be a simple romantic drama staring Ben Affleck, Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams. It probably won’t even be called The Burial and will most likely be anything but simple.

The Grandmasters (Dir. Wong Kar-Wai)

Ma man Wong Kar-Wai taking on the Ip Man story with my man crush Tony Leung? Mmmm. Imma need this ASAP. No English trailer yet, but man does that look pretty.

So those be the cream of the crop. Next comes the crop. I’m not going to include any lengthy explanations, but I’ll give brief descriptions and link to the trailers/IMDB so you can do your own research.

“I Liked That Dude’s Last Film”

God Bless America (Dir. Bobcat Goldthwait)

World’s Greatest Dad was one of the best and most overlooked comedies of the 2000s, and this looks to be in a similar if not more satirical fortune.

Moonrise Kingdom (Dir. Wes Anderson)

I like Wes Anderson’s stuff in varying degrees. I love Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox and merely like the others, but this looks to be a familiar yet different enough spin on the Wes Anderson formula.

Brave (Dir.Mark Andrews & Brenda Chapman)

A new Pixar film is always something to behold and although the premise doesn’t really grab me and Billy Connelly sounds really irritating, I’m still up for anything that company puts out.

Gravity (Dir. Alfonso Cuarón)

Yeah. He has made some fantastic films and the best Harry Potter film, but this thing has been in the ether for so long that I just can’t help but worry about it. Still very intriguing though.

How could you not be excited?

Like Someone In Love (Dir. Abbas Kiarostami)

Certified Copy was one of my favourite films of last year and I am very keen to see what Kiarostami does with a new environment: that of Japan. I really need to check out more of his works.

Rust and Bone (Dir. Jacques Audiard)

Perhaps the most obscure title on the list. Anyone that saw the breathtaking masterpiece that was A Prophet from 2009 will definitely be excited for this one. There isn’t a subtitled trailer out yet, but Marion Cotillard speaking her native tongue is anything but bad.

Stoker (Dir. Park Chan-Wook)

Although Thirst was perhaps his weakest effort, and even though it is an English language film (those never really translate that well, pun intended), I’m still curious as always. Especially since the thing was penned by Wentworth Miller who used Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt as a springboard. Horror movie + psychological drama. Yep.

The Five Year Engagement (Dir. Nicholas Stoller)

I liked Forgetting Sarah Marshall to a degree, and since this looks very similar I guess it’s worth checking out. Right?

Bernie (Dir. Richard Linklater)

Linklater has been putting out some serious duds of late. Or at least uneventful cinematic masses. And while this certainly looks as though it would sit right at home in that mass, I can’t help but be somewhat charmed by Jack Black.

The Dictator (Dir. Larry Charles)

That trailer is horrible. I like Larry Charles and Sacha Baron Cohen, and I’m assuming that they left all the actually funny parts out of the trailer in an effort to skew marketing in a particular direction. I hope so anyway.

To Rome With Love (Dir. Woody Allen)

Isn’t there a formula for Allen’s later films whereby one bad one good? Midnight in Paris was exceptional, this trailer looks anything but. Let’s not cast judgement yet shall we…

The Campaign (Dir. Jay Roach)

I just really want to see these two in a film about politics. Ferrell’s George Bush Jr. is consistently funny, and I guess after seeing them in Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie I just want to see a bit more.

50/50 (2011)

Possibly the best film about cancer I’ve ever seen.

As the film began, I found myself furrowing my brow at the somewhat frustrating series of events were unfolding before me. Not that anything seemed bad per se, but rather that the film seemed to be hitting all of the standard beats of a comedy of these sorts. See the Judd Apatow school of comedy that has been infecting our screens of late. The hip musical cues, the standard bromance, the elegantly designed shots and cranes that seem really shallow upon retrospection: you know the kind. As all of this unfolded, I continued to ask myself whether I was going to allow myself to become invested in this film, or rather would the film allow me to take that crucial leap? I continuously saw Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen as their personalities rather than characters, and the familiarity of the situation and composition didn’t really help.

And then he gets the cancer. To preface, 50/50 is based upon the real life event of writer Will Reisner’s own battle with cancer at a very young age. Substituting himself is Adam (played by Gordon-Levitt), a man of his mid twenties who discovers he has a unique case of back cancer (of which he can’t even enunciate). His best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen), mother Diane (Anjelica Huston), girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) and therapist Katherine (Anna Kendrick) all become entangled in the confusing and frightening turn of events that becomes Adam’s struggle to beat the rare disease.

Now I’m not adverse to the particulars of the economic driven styles of Hollywood cinema, but when a film begins to use the formula as a crutch and advertises its form to myself, I begin to switch off. It is only until an element of the story or a unique character development comes along that I tune back in and go along for the ride. 50/50 achieves this quite incredibly and against all seeming odds. The cancer comedy.

As someone who has never had cancer, or even particularly known anybody that closely to have suffered from the crippling disease, I cannot deem myself fit to comment on the absolute accuracy of the situation presented in 50/50. However, I can use that fickle imagination of mine to come to the conclusion that this is perhaps the most accurate presentation that has ever graced our cinema screens. Sure, cancer is a debilitating disease, one that causes its sufferer to stare death directly in the face and inflicts much pain and suffering on not only the individual but also the people around them. However, it can’t all be that bad. Life is not one grim and sorrow moment one after the other (for most). There are moments of happiness (as slight as they may seem) and there are moments of awkward tension and release. People contribute, they show their best sides, they smile when they feel like crying. Even with cancer, one cannot be upset all the time.

That is what 50/50 gets right. When one of Adam’s chemotherapy friends dies suddenly, we become witness to the shocking spontaneity of death. When he faces up to his potential demise we see the very real death anxiety that is thrust upon him. However, we also see Adam getting high on medicinal marijuana with his chemo buddies in their backyard. We see him go out with his friend Kyle in an effort to use cancer as his pick up line. The film manages to capture the extreme ups and downs, the uncertainty and the joy that such a rush of potential death (and life) can only inflict. It also manages to hone in on the subtler moments in which one is traditionally meant to display sadness or fear or relief and rather than display them as rigid moments of emotion, it displays them as fluid, lucid and ultimately, real.

And this is where the Apatow comedy comes in to play and absolutely works. By nature the Apatow style is free-flowing, spontaneous and unpredictable. Wedge this story into that framework and what you are left with is a realistic and poignant depiction of what it truly must be like to suffer from any form of life-threatening illness. It may be confronting, it may induce your own death drive (it certainly did for me), but it avoids the cliché, it avoids the heart string manipulation and leaves you with what I can only attempt to deem as the closest to the truth as we can really get. An incredible achievement considering the taboo that surrounds the subject matter methinks.
