2011-2012 INTERNAL COMPTON INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION, USA

ICGC-Compton International Fellowships provide research support to graduate students from sub-
Saharan Africa or Latin America whose studies and research will address issues of peace, human
security, and conflict resolution in these regions,
especially in relation to population and environmental concerns. The fellowships also aim to build and sustain a community of Fellows over time that can help link peace and security to population and/or environmental issues. Fellowship recipients must be committed to returning to the region to apply their skills and education. These guidelines are for students currently enrolled in doctoral programs at the University of Minnesota in relevant fields of study (please see eligibility guidelines, below).

ELIGIBILITY FOR A FELLOWSHIP
To be considered for an ICGC-Compton International Fellowship, applicants must:

(1) be enrolled in a doctoral program in the Colleges of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resource
Sciences; Biological Sciences; Liberal Arts; Education and Human Development; or the School of
Public Health;

(2) have research interests that address the interdisciplinary study of issues of peace, human security,
and conflict resolution in Africa or Latin America, and ideally look to interdisciplinary connections
among environment, population and peace; and

(3) receive nomination for these fellowships from the department or college in which they are enrolled. Receipt of the award is contingent upon the applicant’s department providing assistantship support during the year they are participating in our workshops and tuition and health insurance benefits for the fellowship year. Students should be at least one year away from dissertation fieldwork at the time of application (this enables them to participate in ICGC’s doctoral research workshop for the year prior to their research year).

In reviewing nominees ICGC gives priority to demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to the issues of the global south and disadvantaged communities.

AWARDS
Compton Peace Fellows will receive up to a $20,000 fellowship to support their dissertation fieldwork in their research year following successful completion of preliminary examinations and submission of an acceptable research proposal. They are required to participate in the DSSC interdisciplinary workshop on doctoral research in the year prior to dissertation fieldwork. Awards will be announced in March 2010.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Applications and supporting documents are due by January 28, 2011, at the latest. A complete
application will include the following documents.

(1) Statement of purpose, not exceeding two pages, clearly stating the applicant’s research program and showing its relationship to issues of the Compton International Fellowship Program

(2) Description of any past fieldwork and relevant language training and skills of one page or less

(3) Two letters of reference (one from the advisor, one from another faculty member) that address the ways in which the candidate’s dissertation and scholarly interests are related to the issues of the
Compton Program and ICGC

(4) Current transcript of the candidate’s graduate work

The National Research Foundation (NRF) is a Nominating Agency for South African citizens seeking to apply for 2011 Commonwealth Split-Site Doctoral Scholarships.

Key features of the Commonwealth Split-Site Scholarships:
· The scholarships support attendance at a United Kingdom (UK) university or institution for one (1) year, under the joint supervision of the South African-based and UK supervisors.
· Applicants should be registered for a doctoral degree at a South African Higher Education Institution (HEI). The final qualification obtained will be from the South African HEI and not the UK university.
· The twelve (12) months in the UK can be taken at any stage of the doctoral study period providing this is justified in the study plan. Note that the time spent in the UK can be divided into two periods.

The scholarships cover:
· Full tuition fees for one (1) year at the UK host university;
· Stipend for up to one year (1) in the UK;
· Return Airfare; and
· Other allowances.

JCR 2011 International Scholarships

The Japan College of Rheumatology (JCR) will provide a grant to attend the 55th Annual General Assembly and Scientific Meeting of the Japan College of Rheumatology (JCR2011) and the 20th international Rheumatology Symposium in Tokyo on April 24-27 2011. The purpose of the JCR2011 international scholarship is to encourage young scientists and medical doctors under 40 years old other than Japanese to refine their knowledge of rheumatology and send their original scientific message to the world through the JCR annual meeting.

I. The offer is valid only for:
1.   Scientists or medical doctors under 40 years old at the last day of the Congress (27th of April 2011)
2.   Those who do not reside in Japan (except Japanese citizenship)
* Those who have ever received the JCR scholarship award are also eligible to apply, as long as requirements above are satisfied.

II. Scholarship grant

Maximum ¥150,000 (one hundred fifty thousand Japanese yen) / person + complimentary registration and hotel accommodation during the meeting
- From an Asian country: ¥100,000 (one hundred thousand Japanese yen)

GENERAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
Minimum entry qualification into first degree programmes is five credit passes in relevant subjects as indicated in the Faculty/Departmental requirements above and in the current JAMB Brochure, obtained in not more than two sittings in any of the following examinations: SSCE WAEC, SSCE NECO, GCE WAEC, GCE NECO, NABTEB or their equivalents.
DIRECT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the general admissions requirements stated above, a minimum of two relevant subjects passed at GCE Advanced level or NCE (3 merits) or Diploma in relevant field not below credit level is required. It is mandatory for all applicants (full-time and part-time) to register for 2010 JAMB DE or pass 2010 JAMB UME (as applicable)to qualify for admission into the University.

Following the completion and selection of candidates from the First Choice Post-UTME Screening Exercise, we make this announcement for the benefit of all candidates who have chosen University of Calabar as their Second Choice in their application for admission into the University for the 2010/2011 Academic Session. Eligibility

All candidates who meet the cut-off point scores as indicated against each academic programme in the relevant column are eligible to participate in the post-UTME screening exercise as shown below:

PROCEDURE FOR ON-LINE REGISTRATION

Step I

:Proceed to any of the banks on the e-transact network and request to pay for uncial Post-UTME application form via e-transact. You will be required to pay the Post-UTME screening fee of N1,000.00 (One thousand Naira only) and portal/bank processing charges of N550.00 (Five hundred and fifty Naira) only. Step 2

Log on to http://www.unical.edu.ng or http://www.unicaledu.com. Click on 2010 Post-UTME REGISTRATION on the home page. The next page will require you to enter your JAMB Registration number and your e-transact receipt number against the fields provided. Click on log on and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the form.

THE SCRATCH CARD OPTION

Post-UTME scratch cards are available for those who may have difficulties or delay in obtaining the e-transact receipt. Locations and selected cities to obtain the scratch cards are:

Click on log on and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the form.

FINAL STEP

Confirm your entry before clicking on ‘submission’. After clicking on ‘submission’, print the form as evidence of your registration and bring along to the screening venue.

DEADLINE

How to get admission into Master’s Programme in Sweden

Sweden is one of the few countries that offer free education from graduate to doctorate level. Sweden offers more than 400 master’s programmes taught in English. I have chosen to talk about how to get admission into master’s programmes in Sweden because of the increasing number of applications sent in every year.

I have browsed Sweden's central application website several times and this is what I discover, there is always something for everyone, I mean a programme related to your field of study at the undergraduate level. If you doubt me, here is the link www.studera.nu.

You can see for yourself that how to get admission into one of the Sweden’s higher institutions is quite straightforward. Just like everyone else, my first time on the site after clicking several links and going through several pages, I want to apply immediately. Hold on a minute and read the next lines.

Never rush to submit an application. Call it the Golden rule. Have a little patience. Don’t forget that you can only have one user identity at a time so you have to be careful what you do with it. Have you asked yourself how well you understood the requirement? I bet you they mean every detail of the requirement. Sweden receives a lot of application, more than enough they use little mistakes to disqualify candidates.

When you are applying through Studera, make sure you click the link to the specific requirements for the programme you are applying which is always found on the university's website offering the programme.

Studera gives you the overview or general requirement that must be met for all master programmes but more than that is the specific requirement for each programme. If you submit only the requirements listed on Studera but don’t take a second time to see if you meet the specific requirement for the master’s programme which you are applying for, your chances to get selected for the programmes are slim.

These are some of the important things to note when you are applying for a master programme in Sweden’s higher education institutions. Do not ignore them.

1. Remember to get your documents stamped and signed. Original documents are often signed by the institution issuing it. But you are not submitting the originals but photocopies. Take the photocopies back to the institution where they were issued and request that the photocopies be stamped and signed. It cost little or nothing to do this with most Nigerian higher institution I know of.

2. Send in your cover sheet separate from your transcript. Don't mail your transcript and cover sheet together. If possible let your institution where you obtain your first degree be the one to forward your transcript.

3. Take the proof of English language test. Either TOEFL or IELTS. Although some Nigerian higher institutions are allowed to submit English proficiency letter in place of TOEFL/IELTS, I advise you still take either of the tests to fulfil all righteousness. Don’t forget they have more than enough applications coming.

4. Submit your application very early. Plan ahead, have your documents ready and once Studera requests for application be the first to submit. Some master’s programmes are treated on first-come-first-serve basis with limited seat.
