Shaw gained national attention because she was elected to the school board this past attention and pitched the "parent notification policy," which essentially outs students who are gender non-confirming or transgender. Judge Thomas Garza recently granted the state's request for a temporary restraining order. A hearing is scheduled Oct. 13 to continue litigating whether Chino Valley's policy violates state civil rights and privacy laws when it comes to students and gender identity. San Bernardino County Superior Court judge on Wednesday ruled the Chino Valley Unified School District must hold off on enforcing its new policy requiring that schools notify parents if students indicate they identify as transgender or gender-nonconforming.
Pacific Palisades, CA - Aug. 15, 2026: Crowds attend the grand reopening of Rick Caruso's Palisades Village in Pacific Palisades on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026. The luxury shopping and dining hub officially reopened following an extensive, 19-month, more than $100 million restoration and environmental remediation after the devastating January 2025 Palisades Fire. The community's recovery continues, with surrounding homes and businesses also being rebuilt nearly two years after the destructive fire. The reopening represents a major step forward for the Pacific Palisades district, though it highlights a stark contrast with the slow pace of rebuilding across the rest of the fire-damaged neighborhood. "Don't desert us. People down here need it," Gaines said about the post office where he would pick up his Social Security check and mail money for his ailing mother in New Orleans. He now has to travel to downtown business district to get his mail and send money home. Los Angeles was abruptly closed after repeated break-ins, and employees' property getting vandalized. Since then, the community around and in Skid Row has to trek out a mile, and local businesses and community centers have felt the loss. (Genaro Molina/Los Angeles Tiimes)
