I’m been meaning to post about this for sometime now but with traveling and work on different project I’ve been slow getting to this. I last posted about the passing of the master photographer Irving Penn, well I’m happy to post that you can see a great exhibit of his work at the Getty running until Jan 10th 2010. If you get a chance go take a look at these images, I’ll be going soon myself.

Working in Paris, London, and New York in the early 1950s, photographer Irving Penn (American, 1917–2009) created masterful representations of skilled tradespeople dressed in work clothes and carrying the tools of their occupations. A neutral backdrop and natural light provided the stage on which his subjects could present themselves with dignity and pride. Penn revisited his Small Trades series over many decades, producing evermore-exacting prints, including platinum/palladium enlargements. Read more…

When I was just learning to be a photographer (a million years ago) one of my teachers saw the kind of work I was doing (black and white images of my friends around my hometown) and told me I should check out Robert Frank’s “The Americans”. I went to the school library and found the book he was talking about and sat in the stacks just absorbing the amazing images that made up “The Americans”. The work changed how I composed images and showed me I could explore different angles when making photos. I still use thing that I found in that book to this day.

As I was stuck in traffic one day last week I heard that MOCA has oped up their archive of the artists images. The show runs until 10/19/09 (I have no idea why I didn’t hear about this earlier) so get yourselves to downtown LA asap.

Visual Acoustics is a new film by Eric Bricker and narrated by actor Dustin Hoffman. The film has some great interviews with the photographer and explores what other artist and architects thought of Shulman. It seems to insights that I haven’t seen in other pieces about him You can check out the trailer here. Visual Acoustics opens in theaters October 9, 2009 so check you local art house or movieplex to see if it’s playing near you.
