For example, Rayman Origins, its a fantastic game yes, but it has many heavily recycled visuals and gameplay elements, so it is fairly repeatitive, at least it appears that way as its level design is far from it. OMG-Z at 2.49 strikes me personally as very expensive, ludicrous huh? but there is a reason, a sense of achievement is paramount to me, a trophy-less game without any real drive doesn't interest me, its why I avoid mobile/minis altogether but I totally get why some love those quick-fire games. What about God of War Ascension? being developed by the insanely talented Sony Santa Monica Studio with a ludicrously high budget. massive development team with a decade of experience, both a single and multiplayer component and yet, its expected to fit the 40 pound mold of every retail release, even though you could make a case for it costing 5 times that... even more, but with so many cheaper games, who would buy it? Hell what about Ghostlight, there collectors editions are 40 pound (and very late :P) with all that bonus content, but Agarest 2 won't exactly sell 2 million copies because it has more content (both physically and in-game) than 99% of other retail releases, because its to niche (awesome) to appeal to the masses. Instal base is another issue, there are one billion mobile phones in the world and if you can get just 0.001% of those phone owners to try you're game you can make mega-bucks for 70p per person, whereas the 2.5 million Playstation Vitas poses a new problem, if you appealed to just 0.001% of them, the price would obviously have to escalate. I mean Resistance burning skies is 30 quid, Resistance 3 is 15, Resistance 1 and 2 are 10, however 1-3 are on Playstation 3 with its much bigger instal base (ofcourse Vita version is newer) Anyway sorry for the wall (massive multi page document) of text, just my thoughts I guess :)

Pepsi_Biofusion commented on Information – How much is too much?

I have a very simple rule on this matter, the better the game the more punishment I'll take but I think any game that is punishing should have multiple ways to tackle its problems like Deus Ex:Human Revolution so if you fail you don't have to rip you're hair out doing it all over again, plus in Deus Ex:Human Revolution you literally save every split second if you want to. Ofcourse linear games can't get away with this, so to put it plainly their core mechanic must be damn good so failure is you're own doing not some cheap AI, which Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 largely succeeds at, Lost Planet 2 does not. This is actually the reason I hate most puzzle games, they often are more brutal than fun and have no world to invest in, Cubixx HD and Arkedo 2 Swap are as good as it gets and (as my Cubixx HD trophies show) I haven't made a substantial time investment, heres hoping Mystery game X is just that bit more forgiving :)

[LJ] Ross commented on Information – How much is too much?

@Nick Marshall I love the Paradox games but the amount of time it takes me to get started on them is crazy. In my opinion information should be kept to a minimum unless the player is not succeeding or is missing out on mechanics that enhance the gameplay. Some players will go through a game and experiment and have fun and will not even read the manual or tutorial. Others may get frustrated either because they're losing or because they're finding the game repetitive. The latter is a design problem, but the former is easy to solve. You offer the player advice either in context - from an NPC ally, or straight up tell them - for instance in Call of Duty if a car explodes and you die, the game reminds you that exploding cars can kill you. Here's an interesting thought. Two games at opposite ends of the spectrum. Paradox strategy games (Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, etc) work almost entirely on verbal and text feedback. LEGO games (Star Wars, Harry Potter) use just visual feedback and minimal text/voice. These kinds of games prove difficult for fans used to one or the other. As a gamer who plays hardcore strategy titles I find the LEGO games surprisingly frustrating as information is presented in a medium I'm not used to and the same applies vice versa. In short - you need to meet this halfway. Show don't tell, and if it turns out the player is an idiot then you spell it out.

flamez commented on Information – How much is too much?

As long as the controls are similar to other games within the genre then the player shouldn't need too much guidance. Perhaps a couple tutorial levels and that's it. Does all kind of depend on the game itself though, RPG is going to be very different to a Racer compared to a platformer. If the game is designed well and the controls work as expected then the player should be fine. On a side note your captcha box thing is very hard to read and I have to refresh many times.

Pepsi_Biofusion commented on 1 MILLION DOWNLOADS! Part of it may be the lack of reliable internet in european countries as well as what the guys above said. Every console offers demos, you get a taste of the game and if you like it you buy it, no ads and no hidden costs, you know exactly how much you're spending and what you will get. When a game or and app has ads then I tend to stay clear of them, not even bothering to try them out, you hear too often of ads draining the battery. Games that use the energy system tend to be grinding games which never appeal to me in mobile game, and usually you know it will only allow you to get so far before you will be forced to pay in order to play more.

JeremyR commented on Free to Read

I miss the old shareware model. The method of payment should not be that of a unlock method, it should work the same as Draw something, you can play the game for free and enjoy the experience whilest you are over encumbered with adverts which benefit the creaters of the game in payment, and then if you are bored of staring at ASDA's deals you can purchase the game for a reasonable price, £1-£3,then your adverts are removed, you can access to leaderboards and recieve some form of bonus for becoming a member of the paying community ( different looks for the giraffe or an extra level maybe )

[LJ] Ross commented on On PlayStation Minis

@mrandrev It's possible.
